If Jason Momoa potentially signing on for a Minecraft movie wasn't already enough for one day, we've now got news Sega's classic beat 'em up series Streets of Rage is reportedly be getting a movie adaptation.
According to an exclusive on Deadline, the script is being handled by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. Sonic the Hedgehog producer 'dj2 Entertainment' and 'Escape Artists' (known for The Equalizer) will produce the adaptation.
Streets of Rage made its debut on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis in 1991 and most recently got a fourth game, which was released across multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch in April 2020.
Streets of Rage 4 has shifted 2.5 million copies to date. If you're not familiar with the more classic entries in this side scroller series that have you cleaning up the streets as a group of crime fighters, you can check out the second game Streets of Rage 2 on Switch Online's Sega Genesis / Mega Drive service.
How would you feel about a Streets of Rage movie adaptation by the John Wick creator? Drop a comment down below.

Wow! This is great news. Excited to see where they take it and what actors play the roles.
Ah... do I smell SEGA cashing in on the cinematic universe trend? Not complaining, I want a ridiculously bonkers goofy and unrealistic Yakuza movie series so it works
...I’m listening.
Now this is interesting
I would love an '80s-inspired Streets of Rage film.
As for Yakuza and Shenmue, they would probably work better as JDrama series, hopefully ones that are very high budget and co-produced by Hollywood, similar to Netflix KDramas like Squid Game.
Honestly, this IP as an Escape From New York/The Warriors inspired movie would be brilliant. We don’t really have that many Van Damme/Lundgren/Seagal type actors these days though, dunno who would work. Alexander Skarsgård is the obvious pick for Axel and I guess they could go for an actual wrestler as Max like Dave Bautista or John Cena.
Just remembered an interview with Kolstad where he said he would want to make a Bendy and the ink machine movie, so fingers crossed for that🤞
Who would play Blaze? or Estel?
Would go to the theatre for this.
I'm in, though Golden Axe is the franchise I really want to see make a return
Ok, ok, my interest in peaked, don’t disappoint.
I would be completely sold if they enlist Yuzo Koshiro as the composer.
What could possibly be appealing about it for movie adaptation? Nothing really stands out from the plot or characters
Who’s gonna play Roo? That’s the big question here.
Meh we already got a better Streets of Rage movie, it just wasn't called Streets of Rage.
the rock is going to play all the tough guys himself
It better uses the same filter as Kung Fury, or it'll be worthless.
They should just slap the title on Samurai Cop.
Why must everything become a movie, a theme park and toilet paper ?
it's only true to canon if they eat food off the floor for extra health
I don't even care if this sucks as long as the costume design is accurate to the games and doesn't try to go the realistic route.
@Daniel36 my thoughts exactly. A silly 80s throwback is the only way I can see this movie shine.
Please don't cast The Rock...
@Daniel36 Even better. Don't use a filter at all, shoot it in actual 35mm film or even 16mm film for a grungy retro look.
There are still some recent films being shot on 16mm film such as First Man (partially, since the Moon landing climax was shot in IMAX 70mm) and mother!.
Marvel Studios' Eternals was also partially shot in 16mm but most of the film was shot digitally (with some scenes being shot in IMAX Digital).
@Jacoby If they'd made it in the mid-'90s they could easily have had Diane Youdale as Blaze
Kind of funny because Streets of Rage was obviously massively inspired by the actual '80s movie Streets of Fire.
@Andee looked her up. She’s hot and got that Blaze look. Good pick!
I love all 4 Streets of Rage games, it's easily a top 10 favorite series of mine all-time but I'm not sure it's best suited to be a movie. Yakuza or Judgment seem like much better candidates.
@Andee
Good call. She would've been perfect.
Could be interesting. It should retain the colourful over the top 90s charm of the games, but I have a feeling it's going to be drab and washed out and take itself way too seriously, like that Legend of Chun li movie.
@nessisonett Kenta Kobashi would be perfect to portray Max.
Uh... I don't think this is such a good idea.
@OldManHermit I personally thought the Legend of Chun Li was boring.
@AndyC_MK111 Well, they already tried it with Double Dragon. I can't remember if it was good or not.
@Tibob I'm with you on that.
@AndyC_MK111 I keep telling myself I'm going to refresh my memory and watch it. I keep not. Though I do have vaguely fond memories of the cartoon. But yeah, I agree with you that beat em ups don't make compelling movie fodder. Why don't they try and adapt story heavy RPGs and adventure games more often?
This could be good. The John Wick movies are pretty rad in a turn-your-brain-off kinda way. That seems fitting for SoR.
This is a great idea. A Wickified Streets of Rage would be SICK! I'd be in the theater on day one!
Next, someone should do a Final Fight movie, and then.... a crossover where all the characters duke it out before teaming up against the bad guys!
If it's not being made in an eighties kung-fury VHS grain style, I don't want it.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Seen it. I prefer both Police Story 3: Super Cop and The Foreigner
A movie like Streets of Rage really needs to be in the hands of whoever directed The Last Dragon.
@gavinh props for being the only one in the comments to give credit to Streets of Fire. People in the NLife comment section act like such experts on everything, and this common knowledge seems to escape them all. Streets of Fire is such an underrated movie that inspired game devs of the late 80s for good reason. That movie kicks ass.
As long as there's an elevator fight.
The Streets of Rage games actually have some batsh*t crazy sci-fi elements beneath the surface. That's something that should make it into this movie if they really want it to feel like Streets of Rage.
(and also the music, but almost all video game adaptations seem to be allergic to including music from the games, so I won't be holding my breath on that one 😔)
Love the series. But games to movies are barely good
