We've got a slight update on Freedom Planet 2! According to developer GalaxyTrail, the game finally has a release date.
The PC (Steam) version has been narrowed down from "Spring 2022" to 13th September this year, and the current aim is to launch it on "multiple" other platforms alongside this release. These other platforms have not been revealed yet and still apparently require "more time" to go through testing and certification.
An update will be provided as soon as there is new information to share. Here's the message in full (via Twitter):
"At long last, after many years of hard work, the finish line is in sight! We are pleased to announce that Freedom Planet 2 will be officially released on Tuesday, September 13th this year!
We have previously stated that we would have a spring release date - however, we had to push this back due to a few unforeseen circumstances. We are eager to launch on multiple platforms at the same time alongside the PC version, and these additional ports will need more time to go through testing and certification than we anticipated. We cannot say anything more specific at this time, but we will let you know as soon as we have more information to share. Additionally, our lead developer unfortunately suffered a hand injury last week, so this release date will provide extra time for physical therapy while other team members take care of her duties.
We once again thank all of our fans for their continued patience, and we wish Sabrina a speedy recovery! Now that the core game is complete, expect more frequent updates from us as we approach September. We're almost there!! - The GalaxyTrail Team"
So, there you go - we've got a release date for Freedom Planet 2. Fingers crossed a Nintendo Switch release is part of the plans, as we rather enjoyed the original outing.

Well by releasing it near the fall, it would definitely be competing against Sonic Frontier by two or three months early.
@Specter_of-the_OLED More against Sonic Origins, a collection of the best Sonic 2D games ever.
Although Sonic Origins will have infinite legs and will be infinitely better.
The first Freedom Planet was the best Sonic game in ages.
Will be buying the 2nd one, no doubt.
@Banjo- Hopefully that collection comes out sooner. It's suppose to be release around Q1 or Q2 of 2022.
Loved the first game and been eagerly anticipating the sequel, which looks to be even better in every way, so bring it on!
Definetly will get me a physical copy for this one ^_^
Well, that took a looooooong time! Lets hope its good!
Oh wow. I'd forgotten about Freedom Planet! It was very good so fingers crossed for the sequel.
i cant help myself:
QUOTE-

thats a "push back" or "delay," not a "narrow down."
anyway, this looks great! I want to go back and play FP1 now, somehow i missed it.
it looks very Treasure to me, but the review and everyone in comments says its a sonic like game, so i guess its more sonic than treasure. either way its hard to go wrong for me ☺️
First game was totally ruined by the terrible in-game physics. No sense of momentum to movement at all.
I genuinely thought this came out years ago, lol.
Awesome! I absolutely loved the original, so hopefully this will be great too!
Super excited for this. I loved the original Freedom Planet so I can't wait for how the gameplay feels and how the story unfolds
Ooooooo, I’ve been wondering where this had disappeared to… and it releases on breakaway day!
Almost forgot about this, but I’m glad to hear about it. I did enjoy the 1st game.
Loved the first game so can't wait for this one. No interest in anymore Sonic games as my faith in the franchise has gone altogether and I don't think this game has anything to worry about in that regard.
I mean the new Sonic game could be good who's to say? but after so many games being such a disaster before I'm not exactly that enthusiastic for it put it that way.
Well it's about damn time! I was starting to think the game got cancelled. The first one was fantastic! It was a little too much of a Sonic copycat though. Not that that's a bad thing. I was just hoping for something more original. Maybe the sequel delivers on that.
The best Sonic that isn't Sonic that I've played. By the way, Sonic Origins should absolutely be out much sooner than that. Very odd it's not been slated for release around the time the movie hits cinemas. Strangely quiet since it was announced...
@Truegamer79 That's cause it did started out as a Sonic fan game at one point. This and Spark the Electric Jester both started as Sonic fan games before Sega came after them to cease and desist. This was back when Sega held Sonic to the same level as Mario in that they won't let the fans touch the IP unlike today where Sonic has fallen so low that Sega is finding it difficult to bring Sonic back to glory again. Nowadays you could make a Sonic fan game and Sega would be okay with it as long as you don't profit from it. Not wanting their work to go to waste these indies then turn their fan games into actual original games with similarity to Sonic instead.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Yeah i heard something about that. Speaking of Sonic fan games that Sonic mania was excellent! It's the Sonic 4 we should have got back when they tried to do it on Wiiware and PSN. That didn't work out so well.
I like the visual upgrade this one got. Looks much smoother and nicer than the first game.
One of these days I've gotta play the first one O_o
Awesome! The original was one of my favorite game ever.
This game took so long that lilac ended up going crazy and went rouge and entered another universe and changed her name to twizzly gummy cookie. If anyone sees her please tell her that FP2 is finally getting a release date so she can come home. Thank you.
(If anyone gets that then you deserve a cookie 😉)
@Liam_Doolan The first game's soundtrack is a good contender for the OST articles your team is putting out!
the final boss in the first one was extremely hard to beat.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Wasnt the change due to the developers own choice because they wanted to create their own IP (mentioned in a blog from the developer "because I was ultimately creaing something in the shadow of an established franchise and that it would never truly be my own work. So, I set out to try and design a main character that would pay homage to my main source of inspiration while still being unique enough to stand out on her own.")
likewise the spark creator already had some sonic fangames under their name before deciding to work on their own IP and iirc was more a case of being based on their previously released fangames (from a powerup) than starting life as one.
Wondering where you heared they were made due to C&Ds from sega since theres generally been a fan scene for years, the Sage expo has been around for over 20 years and there have been some quite prominent fan creations that are still getting updates like robo blast 2
Eight years and I think, four delays at this point. Its a wonder anyone even remembers this game.
Now lets see if it gets delayed again.
The original Freedom Planet is one of my favorite games sitting on my WiiU. Great art, level design, and story. If you like Sonic games you need these games in your life.
Finally. Jeez man. I've been waiting for this like forever.
I heard good things about this game series. I'm not surprised that it is called the better "Sonic".
Loved the first game, so I'll get the sequel for Switch.
A few years ago, I bought the first game on the Switch, Physically. If they announce a physical version, I might consider buying that.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I don't think anything was stated by SEGA for a Q1/Q2 release for Sonic Origins. All we got was a 2022 release year.
Love the first one, should be great.
I'd like to see some tighter level design next time around. Some of the few opening stages were fun but then the game seems to turn into quite a slog.
I didn't know a sequel was coming, what a lovely surprise! Enjoyed Freedom Planet on Wii U, need to revisit it and play as the other characters.
@RiasGremory It is on the harder difficulty levels, but it's not that hard on Easy (nor are the rest of the bosses) if you just use stall tactics to take advantage of the limited automatic health recovery you get on the Easy difficulty level.
