The next pair of Mythical Pokemon are ready to make their appearance in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl!
The Pokémon Company has announced that the Pitch-Back Pokémon Darkrai and the Alpha Pokémon Arceus will be available to catch from later today, 15th March, when software update 1.3.0 hits.
These two extremely powerful and intimidating pocket monsters (that doesn't feel appropriate to the incarnation of darkness and, well, Poké God, does it?) have their own unique methods of acquiring. If Pokémon trainers ever played the original Diamond and Pearl, then a lot of this will probably sound familiar!
To catch the centaur-like Arceus, you'll need a Pokémon Legends: Arceus save file on your Switch and must have completed all main missions. You'll also need to have entered the Hall of Fame and be the proud owner of the National Dex in Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl. Then return to your bedroom, where you can get the Azure Flute. Take this flute to the top of Mount Coronet and play it at Spear Pillar, where Arceus will appear and be ready to do battle. Bring lots of Poké Balls.
While Arceus' catch method adds the Pokémon Legends requirement, the dream-eating Darkrai is identical to its DS counterpart. You need to obtain the member Card, which you can get between the new moons, via the Mystery Gift feature. And, like Arceus, you'll need to have beaten the Elite Four and the Champion of Sinnoh to enter the Hall of Fame and own that sweet, sweet expanded Pokédex.
You'll be able to download the update at 1:00 am UTC / 9:00 pm EST / 6:00 pm PST, so you've got time to fill your bag with Full Restores and Poké Balls, and prepare your team.
Don't forget, you've still got a couple of weeks to catch the shrubbery hedgehog Shaymin in-game, so make sure you pick up Oak's Letter soon!
Will you be catching Darkrai and Arceus? And are you still playing Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl? Let us know!

You need to believe in a thing called love to catch Darkrai...
Looks like they got bored halfway through the design and said "oh well it's +1".
Lol a whole direct bit about Shaymin and they're just like "Oh yeah and Arceus"
Great, now just give me deoxys and celebi and i can finish the dex.
That's a really high requirement to get Arceus in Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl, you have to complete TWO games!
I don't see the point to getting these Pokèmon when they're completely useless post game. If I could use them in the Battle Tower they would be worthwhile but you can't so I'm not going to waste my time catching something you can't do anything with.
@RupeeClock Yes and he's as good as useless so why bother?
@Primarina Yes! The mystery gift for Oak's Letter ends on the 27th, but you don't need to beat the league to recieve the gift.
@RupeeClock It is because God is testing you. Seriously though, that is a pretty steep ask for some. Not for me, though. The 100 hour Legends: Arceus bender I went on was aweome. I'm still holding out hope for an expansion before Gen 9 gets here.
@eaglebob345
I agree, it's really rewarding to complete the Pokédex in Legends Arceus, and I'm going the extra mile to perfect the Pokédex too.
You need to BEAT LEGEND ARCEUS to get him in game?? Seeiously? Screw you, Pokémon
Actually the azure flute obtainment method is all new, it was going to be distributed via mystery gift but was canned.
@Kieroni
Let me tell you about The Sea's Legend.
@RupeeClock ?? I'm not seeing anything that says you need to beat BDSP to get a Manaphy in LA
@Kieroni
The point is the quest is accessible in Legend's Arceus, but impossible to solve without either finding the information in-game or looking it up externally.
You can only get Oak's Letter until the 27th, but one thing I didn't understand is, can I get Shaymin after the 27th if I got the letter? The way people are talking it sounds like the letter will disappear?
Arceus is only centaur-like if those four little white stubs on its neck count as arms...
Arceus is more like a godly giraffe
Judgement day is upon us.

@Bobb : The Mystery Gift even ends on the 27th. If you’ve already obtained Oak’s Letter, that won’t disappear.
Ok I love that the arceus event is not only now doable, but it doesn’t depend on a timed distribution anymore! That’s great!
@Silly_G @DomGC thank you very much for the information
@Neoicelord for shaymin and darkrai, yes rush, for arceus, nah rush.
Ugh...HARD PASS on Arceus. I'm not that desperate for it. Besides, I've yet to finish Legends...which I'll do when I'm motivated to do so. Still...kinda steep and scummy really.
But Darkrai I'll do.
@Kieroni
SPOILER WARNING
and you have to catch ALL of the Pokémon in the game to get him. I stopped playing at that point lol
So I gotta beat one game to 100% another one.
Kinda dumb but it works ig.
Won't be getting Arceus as I wanted to wait a while before playing another Pokemon game after recently finishing Brilliant Diamond. Maybe we'll get another chance at some point.
@RubyCarbuncle the three mythical pokemon being distributed are NOT SHINY LOCKED, witch means that they are extremely welcome additions. Competitive stuff is something few care anyway but shiny pokemon is something everybody loves.
Wait I need to beat him in legends? What the heck?
@Gofixmeaplate Holy crud that's stupid. Arceus is one of the 15 or so Pokemon I'm missing from my living dex, but if it's just going to be like this, I'd rather have a hacked one
@abdias That is true but honestly to me wasting so much of your time relentlessly pursuing a different colour is just bizarre. Yes I'm guilty of this too or at least I was but the older I get the more I realise I can be spending my time doing better things instead of resetting the game over and over which for all intense and purposes is going to be one big waste of time anyway.
What a brilliant (and shining lol) idea!
The only way to get Arceus is to already have Arceus!
@Screen yup, but on BDSP it can be shiny, and that's matter a lot for many people
Surprised that nobody's mentioned yet that this is something of a historic righting of wrongs for Pokemon, as the Azure Flute and associated event was coded waaaay back in the original D/P/P games, but never released. This will be the first (legitimate) time that Arceus and his kinda-bonkers unique musical accompaniment is actually able to be encountered in the orginally-intended context, over fifteen years after the fact.
That's pretty darn cool.
I'm hoping that like with the Shaymin event, only the Member Card is required to access Darkrai.
@Fath And at least he is there to stay I guess, still kinda sucks you need to beat two pokemon games (And we still have gen 9 coming later this year) in order to get him.
According to Serebii Dakrai isn't available until April 1

What does it mean, between new moons?
@Alpha008 it means that the event will begin with the upcoming new moon, and end with the one after it.
So, basically it’ll be available the whole month of April.
Hard pass for me i guess. Ive been looking forward to finally getting my hands on an Arceus, but Legends Arceus doesnt interest me and even if it did I dont have the time to finish that game to the neccessary point to complete a different game I already have.
What a stupid pre-requisite. At least make it obtainable using requirements from the same game (see Shaymin and Darkrai).
@wazlon @metroid02
You're both clearly Pokemon fans, I don't understand how you wouldn't be interested or want to get and play PLA, it's an incredible game, an in a lot of ways what many fans always dreamed of for the series.
It's such a breath of fresh air, an it's differences make it seem more like your playing BOTW then a typical Pokemon game.
While the requirements are perhaps unnecessarily high, I can't exactly malign it because I think it's a nice little gift for the fans who have done both.
@Rosona
Well for one it has an entirely unappealing aesthetic to me. And as much as gameplay matter, visuals do also matter to me. Also, I have a very wide range of games I want to play and have been meaning to get started on that I am not interested in playing another Pokemon game (especially of the same gen as the most recent releases) anytime soon.
It just annoys me that they could just create "unlock criteria" within BD/SP without the need to buy a separate game. Its not like the mew/jirachi unlocks, pokemon that have been regularly thrown at players, Arceus is much rarer.
Did you grab diamond or pearl for the remakes?
@Rosona I don't want to get LA just yet because I've only recently finished Brilliant Diamond and fancy a break from monster catching. Have moved to playing my Wii U for now. Will probably get Legends Arceus later in the year but for now I'm all Pokemoned out.
You can get both Arceus and Darkai in Pokemon Legends: Arceus and since this game will be added to Pokemon Home later this year.
Same with Shaymin.
I don't see the need for panicking really.
@RupeeClock well God, soooooo should be.
