Taito's vertically-scrolling shmup RayForce – known as Layer Section in Japan and Galactic Attack / Gunlock in the west – is coming to Switch, according to a new rating via the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee.
Released in 1994, the arcade original was created using Taito's F3 arcade hardware and was subsequently ported to the Sega Saturn in 1995. A PC version followed in 1997, and the game came to iOS in 2012 and Android in 2017.
RayForce would get two sequels. RayStorm / Layer Section II in 1996 and RayCrisis in 1999, with the latter game acting as a prequel. While RayStorm got ports to the Saturn and PlayStation, RayCrisis was only ported to Sony's machine. RayStorm also got a high-def remake for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2010.
According to the rating, Layer Section & Galactic Attack S-Tribute is being published by City Connection and is also coming to Xbox One and PS4.
Here's a trailer for the 2012 iOS release of the game:

Nice. absolute classic. Think this was a PS1 launch title in Japan. about time this was ported over.
More shmups on Switch you say?
Pretty dope.
I wish such games weren't strictly 1-CC oriented. Console versions of several shmups, like Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun, had a small share of continues available to the player for a challenging (yet fair) ride.
Fingers crossed for a decent port that's not limited to the basic arcade emulation.
@smithyo It was on the Saturn, not PS1.
Yes! Fabulous game. Can we get the sequels too please?
@Damo Indeed, i am confusing with RayStorm which is the game i had in mind but havent played for years
Superb. It shall be mine the day it releases.
Taito, please give me Lufia and Lufia II.
Please!
Yoooooo Galactic Attack on Saturn is so good. I'd consider double dipping, and maybe selling my Saturn copy
That trailer looks pretty cool indeed. Another shmup I haven't played, so bring it.
Rayforce! Love it. If only there were a horizontal mode for TV...
"…published by City Connection"
I bought quite a few games from them and every single one was really, really disappointing (some more, some less). I'm not supporting them anymore.
XB1? I thought that console only carried Neo Geo games.
@smithyo Philosoma, perhaps?
Can't wait, dancing to the first stage music already. "This is the control tower, make a left turn" doo do dooo
@PosterBoy Yea, concerned about the City Connection thing too. They just don't even try to offer acceptable input lag, which is a big disappointment as they seem to release so many classic shmups.
Oh, I wanted RayForce and other Ray series games on Nintendo Switch! I played RayForce before, on my Android smartphone. Game is available on Android in Google Play Store/Play Market.
@rushiosan At least the iOS ports of the Ray games have “unlimited” continues. You lose your lives, you get the continue countdown and you can continue again.
Day one download. It’s been far too long.
@PosterBoy They messed up Psikyo and Cotton. What else am I missing?
@RudeAnimat0r I wouldn’t, the dev really, really borked up cotton and considering that once again that it’s Saturn ports, they can and will Bork it up again, not unless they tool around with the zebra engine, or just not even use it
@farrgazer That's kinda alright but still kills the point of having some sort of challenge. I loved the first Metal Slug port on PS1 because it actually wanted you to finish the game with a maximum of 3 coins IIRC. The replay value gets pretty high.
Great games have all three, Rayforce on Saturn. Raystorm, Ray crisis on PS1. Nice to see on Switch.
My favourite ever 32 bit shooter.
Sounds like this has the arcade soundtrack(which is great), but not as good as the Saturn release. Option to have both would be amazing.
Icing on the cake would be the completed Level 1 of the unreleased sequel, R-Gear.
Day one buy for me.
@rushiosan I recall Ikaruga giving you extra credits proportionate to the amount of play time you rack up - something like one extra credit for every hour.
Absolutely on this day one. They never brought the 360 version to BC so excellent!
City Connection… good tastes, but they need to get their lag in line with Retroarch benchmarks
YES!!!! I mean, if I wasn't lazy I could play this on my Saturn, but it's really hard to take that on the train. This is one of the few Shmurps from my youth that I loved to the point of actually going for high schools (as opposed just trying to finish the game, which was usually the case). I wonder if I'll feel that way about it the second time around.
If this is true, then this would be awesome. I love Rayforce on mobile, but having a full modern console would definitely make it the best way to play it
I want the HD Raystorm version re-released, it's a crying shame that's stuck on the 360.
I have been dying to play Galactic Attack on Switch. I haven’t played it since the Saturn days. I do hope City Connection doesn’t bodge this one.
Oh Lord. This one is brilliant. SOLD!
