Remember: This list is dynamic and based on the User Ratings of each game in the Nintendo Life game database — as such, it is subject to fluctuation even now. If you haven't rated your favourite Final Fantasies previously, feel free to scroll through, assign a score, and assert your influence on the order below. Enjoy!
With three decades' worth of titles to its name, this long-running and celebrated RPG franchise has a title to get Simpsons lawyer Lionel Hutz hot under the collar. The Final Fantasy series has 15 mainline entries to its name (with number XVI in the works, of course), plus a bewildering host of spin-offs, side stories, sequels, crossovers, remakes, and more that form one of gaming's biggest juggernaut franchises. Nope, there's no 'finale' in sight at all with this one.
We asked Nintendo Life readers for their help in rating all the mainline games that have appeared on Nintendo consoles. It's no small task, that's for sure, with 12 of the 15 mainline games currently available to play on Nintendo consoles (okay, 11-and-a-half; the Pocket Edition of Final Fantasy XV isn't really the Full Monty and its position in the list below comes as no surprise).
The influx of Switch ports for the later 3D games means that Nintendo gamers can now enjoy the majority of the series, with only XIII, MMORPGs XI and XIV, and XV (in its full form) absent from the mainline lineup. We discuss in the list below the various versions of each title — they can be pricey to pick up these days, but who can put a price on this incredible series?
Remember that the order below is updated in real-time according to each game's corresponding User Rating. Therefore, it's entirely possible to influence the ranking even as you read this. Simply click on the 'star' game you wish to rate and assign a score.
It is time. Brace yourselves for confusing regional numbering in our reader-ranked list of the best (mainline) Final Fantasy games on Nintendo systems...
12. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD (Switch eShop)

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD isn't a bad game, but it feels superfluous — it's hard to imagine the audience being served here. While it captures the spirit of the full game well enough, it's an undeniably inferior version of a series entry that wasn't the most celebrated to begin with. It has its fans, of course, but hardened Final Fantasy enthusiasts won't be satisfied playing through this lighter mobile version as a substitute for the 'proper' experience, there's little reason to dive in if you've already played the original, and there are better options for curious casuals looking to dip their toe into the Final Fantasy pool.
11. Final Fantasy II (NES)
This is very much not the Final Fantasy II the West received on Super NES. While work on a translation of this Famicom game was apparently started, Square eventually decided to skip it and jump to the 16-bit Final Fantasy IV on the SNES instead (which was labelled as 'Final Fantasy II' overseas).
Final Fantasy II — the proper 8-bit one — was a Japan-only release until 2004 when Nintendo gamers around the world were able to play it as one half of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls on GBA. That version added a bonus section after you'd completed the game, and remains arguably the best way for Nintendo gamers to play officially, although there are ways and means to play the game elsewhere, too, including ports on PlayStation and PSP.
10. Final Fantasy (NES)

Where it all began. The name of Square's original Final Fantasy from 1987 came partly from the team's belief that this was their last-ditch attempt to make a successful game. They may have hoped for it, but few could have predicted quite how successful the series would become.
Going back, you might not guess so, either; by modern standards, this is a very bare-bones vintage RPG. The kernel is there, though, so although new players will definitely need to wash this down with a strong glass of historical context, series fans will find it worth investigating or revisiting. It's available in various forms, and is one of the titles on the NES Classic Mini.
9. Final Fantasy III (DS)
The remade DS version of this one was the first we'd seen of it in the West — the RPG which came out as Final Fantasy III here was number 6 in Japan. A missing piece of the puzzle for overseas fans for so long, Final Fantasy III is certainly a solid entry, although probably not one that casual players or those curious about the series should begin with. Its a tough cookie difficulty-wise, but this is still very a enjoyable (not-so-Final) Fantasy.
8. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered (Switch eShop)
Final Fantasy VIII tended to divide opinion when it released over two decades ago. Some new ideas hit the spot while others fell flat, and the story is certainly a love-it-or-hate-it affair. The HD presentation and helpful quality of life updates featured in the Remastered version on Switch makes it more attractive than ever but, if you pushed us, we'd say it's probably the most 'skippable' of the mainline Final Fantasy games on Switch. Still, it's availability to Nintendo gamers is cause for celebration, and there are those who count this as their series favourite. Different strokes, folks!
7. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)

The remastered Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age on Switch is a great version of a great game; the Gambit-focused combat system is still a triumph and although the visuals are showing their age a little these days and the story doesn't knock it out of the park like some other series entries, this remains a Fine-al Fantasy in our book.
See what we did there? It's a very fine Final Fantasy, so we combin— hello?

Can we at least all agree on 12th place..?
Sad to see the original FF so far at the bottom of the list, but its a mess of a game, so I'm just glad its not last place. Other than maybe bumping VIII up a liiiittle bit, I couldn't agree more with this list.
Nice job NL community. If VII were in top spot, it would make us all look like filthy casuals.
So far I've only played VII (plus remake), IX, X and XV. Obviously need to play more but FF is becoming one of my favourite franchises!
Best Final Fantasy game is Final Fantasy IX.He/She who claims otherwise is ignorant and not even worth taking seriously.
Why is FF Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers not no.1??
Very pleasantly surprised V is so high. I still think it's the most "fun" FF.
6 I can understand but 9 and 5 rounding out the top 3? 9 has aged arguably worse than any other from the PS1 era. 5 was easily the worst of the SNES era. All that said, my view of the series certainly would not match mainstream rankings as I actually like 8 and enjoyed 2, but I'm still scratching my head a bit that 5 beat some of the best games ever.
I'm so proud of the fanboys on this site! Ff VI is the very best FF ever and this site gave it what it deserved. Thanks, nintendolife fanboys!
@Anti-Matter What's your favorite?
@JokerCK no. Ff ix is second place. Stop talking nonsense.
The number one game is well-deserved. Greatest RPG of all time!
While I'd put FF2/4 above FFIX, IX does a lot of stuff very well. Its first four characters are all very well-drawn and strongly developed. In fact, I'd probably put that quartet above the entire casts of many other FF games. Shame the second half of the game loses focus and gets dungeon heavy, and the other four characters are much weaker in comparison. Still a good time though.
@MichaelHarvey no. I prefer it then NES FFs
You can see how many haters of FFVII there are out there when you see FFV over it, lol.
People, play the game and stop scoring it with 0 like trolls.
If it´s considered by most people as one of the best videogames ever created, even the best game ever, also the remake most people wanted and asked for, etc., is for something. But... haters gonna hate. A shame
I've only been adding Switch games to my collection so I was only able to rate the one that I've played on the Switch. So I guess in a way my best by default is Final Fantasy XII with a solid score of 4/10.
@FredsBodyDouble if you're looking for a super serious story, I can see why someone wouldn't love V, and same goes if you're not an RPG vet as it's one of the tougher ones. But the job system, boss battles (especially the secret ones), and more light-hearted tone make it the most fun to replay to me. I won't say it has the best narrative (it's fine) but as a game, I definitely think the placement is deserved.
I'm the oddball who feels that XIII is the best, the paradigm system is my favorite in the whole series. I appreciate most of the rest about the same, although I've never played V or XV. My least favorite would be III.
FF10 only on 5? are you guys drunk?
@the_beaver it's not just trolls. I'd rate VII a 7 or 8 and V a 9 or 10. I like both but genuinely believe V is better when you consider game design and actual fun factor.
Lack of XIV is a bit of a shame. The Shadow Bringer story has been killing it.
I'd put VIII a bit higher personally
FF10 was my first Final Fantasy. I remember being amazed by the graphics and thinking, "this is the future of video games." Because I have played through it several times, I have been putting off getting it for Switch. It will probably be the next JRPG I play though after finishing Dragon Quest XI.
Also, Final Fantasy Tactics on the GBA was great. Played it through multiple times and way past end game content. I remember spending hours planning out what classes I wanted characters to become while looking at player's guides (can't remember if they were in Nintendo Power).
@tsdenizen If you play both and you think that way, it´s ok. But I bet a whole lot of people haven´t even played it, and they hate it because... well, probably because it´s so famous, so many people love it, and at the time it was released, there was always the rivalry between FFVII and OoT as the best game ever created.
But both games are great, there´s no need to hate any of them for the sake of it... Oh well. Fanboys are like that.
This really shouldn’t be called the best FF games of all-time when it only includes entries on Nintendo platforms.
The only ranking that caught me off guard was FFV. I like the game, but the story is very bland and it could be a bit more challenging. I can still see its merits, it's just not one of my favorites.
I know it was divisive but surprised to see 8 so low. I loved 9 when it first came out but downloaded it on switch and I don’t think it’s aged as well as 7 or 8, a lot of the characters are actually really dull and it really runs out of pace towards the end
@khululy My issues with VIII are the Junction System breaks the balance of the game. You could say the same about VII once you get mime or knights of the round materia, but they were near the end of the game. From what I remember you could break VIII once you got siren, the limit break system was also really abuseable.
@Leon_Kennedy The thing I noticed about IX is the frame rate dies when you're on the world map. Also not a fan of how limit breaks work in the game. Also VIII's card game was way better.
I like the art style, story and soundtrack though.
Good list with a lot of fair assessments. Glad to see FFVII isn't just given a free pass to #1.
@JokerCK Best Final Fantasy game is Final Fantasy IX.He/She who claims otherwise is ignorant and not even worth taking seriously.
The battle system is very slow.
The Limit system is terrible.
The ability learning system is terrible, I don't want to keep weaker equipment equipped just to learn an ability. Previous games did it much better.
The card game is a downgrade from the one in Final Fantasy 8.
I still find it funny that the PS Vita got all the NES/SNES era FF games before Switch lol
Nevertheless FFX and FFXII are games I never hesitate to replay. I bought the HD remaster of X/X-2 at launch on Vita and double dipped almost immediately on Switch after beating FFVII and FFIX. I understand that the sphere grid system in X could be a bit cumbersome but honestly as far as accessibilty to newcomers goes, I'd totally say X is one of the best starting points by far
Damn straight 6 is the best!
To me Final Fantasy VI for SNES is still the best of all of them.
@TheFrenchiestFry I still find it funny that the PS Vita got all the NES/SNES era FF games before Switch lol
You find it funny that a system that came out 5 years before the Switch got PS1 games before the Switch?
You do know that the NES era games were remade for the PS1 and the SNES era games were ported to the PS1, right? Do you also find it funny that the PS1 got these games before the Switch?
@Crono1973 Literally just found it funny considering the Switch still got VII, IX, X, X-2 and XII in addition to Chronicles as well as the Game Boy entries before the NES and SNES games
also you seem to love quoting people a lot based on your other comments and taking great offense to it
6, 7, 4, 9, 8, 10, 3, 5, 1, 2, then it's any combination of 12-whichever one they're up to now, 11
But Chrono Trigger beats all
@bigpale Chrono and FFVI are pretty close imo. I love the stories and casts of both
@TheFrenchiestFry also you seem to love quoting people a lot based on your other comments and taking great offense to it
Well, when people say things that make no sense, I can either roll my eyes and move on or respond. I usually do the former but sometimes I do the latter.
In this case,' finding it funny/strange that a last gen handheld got any game before a current gen handheld' makes no sense. Of course the last gen handheld got games first. Who could release anything on the Switch in 2013?
@Crono1973 Again you're taking a rhetoric observation way too seriously.
Don’t understand the versions here. Final Fantasy VI for SNES is clearly better than, say XV Pocket? Why is the DS version of VI on top?
throw away that garbage called Final Fantasy VIII Remastered and bring here Final Fantasy VIII (PSX) and put it on the first place.
@Wargoose I haven’t played either, but there’s always been many who say VII was a technical masterpiece at the time, but not a great RPG. All I know is the «updated» version currently available on Switch, PS4 etc. looks terrible, with updated sprites and blurry background. What where they thinking?
@Retro_Player_77 doesn't the SNES original have slightly off translation? I know the ps1 ports had naff emulation. Wasn't the GBA version considered the best western release
I wish Square would release VI and V on Switch. But thinking about that horrible non-optional(!) filter that Chrono Trigger on IOS and Dragon Quest 1-3 on SW got, I might reconsider.
@Yanina I wish they would just release all the first nine games in a collection with no «update» whatsoever.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Agree. Chrono gets the nod solely because of the smaller roster and tighter story. I love (adore) FFVI, but it sometimes feels like it's a bit too big for its own good.
Not how I'd order them, but not TOO far off. I'd put FFVIII higher, XII lower, FFVII on top and a few other changes
@Arehexes It's a shame they remade Crystal Chronicles instead of porting XIV to Switch.
And if anyone doubts that Switch can run it my six year old laptop can run it. And that one struggles with Borderlands 2, Civilization VI, Witcher 3 and Skyrim.
I dare say FFXIV is pretty well optimized to a mobile chipset so it should be possible.
@bigpale I think Chrono Trigger was so far ahead of its time, it's crazy. I can understand people's love for it. For me I played it too late, same goes for earthbound. The characters and story just didn't grab me.
@the_beaver FF VII is a mess of a game in that if not for being the first big PS1 jRPG most played it would be largely forgotten. It really improved nothing but the length of summoning cutscenes.
FF V improved the job system and while intentionally story light, has a replayability that is amazing. You can master everything, take the four job challenge, or anything in between. It’s that freedom that makes it so great, as your decide the difficulty of it.
However Final Fantasy IV will always be my favorite, VI is the best one so far.
I mostly agree with this. While not mad about IX, I appreciate what it did right. My top 3 would be VII, then either VI or X. XII was way better than I thought it would be too.
Not a bad order.
Out of all the mainline games my top three are IV (I feel like Cecil is still the best protagonist the series has ever seen to this day, IMO), VII (Tifa is my favorite FF character and not because of her physical attributes; her characterization is the personification of my ideal woman), and XII (best battle system in the series, IMO even though I agree that the story and cast of characters are weak).
My favorite game in the FF series overall though is a spin off. Final Fantasy Tactics.
I only agree with the 1st (masterpiece) and 12th. IX in ninth place is a very very bad joke.
FFXV: Pocket Edition holds a very special place in my heart. I hope they release a GOTY Pocket Edition.
These lists always have some contentious choices, however this one I feel like there are vslid arguments for each positioning, aside from ff ix being where its at. Ive beaten ever ff game to date, (even the crappy mobile ones released in japan in the 2006-2010 time frame) and i just dont get the live for ix.
That said, its amazing this series has so much to offer. I wish you would include spinoffs. I loved the 3ds music ff game for example.
@BlackenedHalo As someone not in the know, what's wrong with the remaster?
VI is not better than the PS1 era or X.
Sorry.
Not the worst list I've seen by a longshot even though there's a lot here that I don't agree with.
My personal (mainline) FF best to worst list would be:
1. FF5
2. FF4
3. FF12
4. FF7
5. FF6
6. FF9
7. FF3
8. FF1
9. FF10
10. FF8
11. FF2
12. FF13
I enjoy everything up till 10 and I can still tolerate 8 as well (mostly because 8 does have the benefit of having one of the best soundtracks in any game ever). 2 and 13 are garbage though.
@Crono1973 I was just about to reply to him and say the same thing but you beat me to it!
@e-love
Overall I’d say it’s tied with IX.
I think it’s a better game than VII with a far more compelling antagonist.
I resent the DS remake of IV for making me realize I've been pronouncing Cecil's name incorrectly my whole life. Otherwise I agree with its place on the list. Honestly though, I would have ranked XII higher. It felt so unique for the franchise and the world was lived in and established.
Number 2 is right where it should be and so is number 6😁
@HollowSpectre THIS SATISFIES ME.
@Crono1973 OK
This comment section reminds me so much of secondary school lunch times where one of the most common topics was FFVII vs Ocarina of time. Twenty years later I'm still talking about the same stuff
Lots of love for Vi here but I would certainly have to say that I prefer the SNES version over the GBA version because of the controls (more buttons) and the music quality.
Very happy with the Top 2.
VI and IX are my two favorites as well, with XII being my number 3.
I feel like FF8 and FF9 are games that were underrated for so long that people have now rediscovered them and are massively overcorrecting for them. I see a lot of hipster-like flexing like "you've probably never played it but FF8/9 is my favourite FF" People are biased towards a need to be obscure and feel special while hating on the popular ones.
As a side note: the Final Fantasy I remakes fixes a lot of the glitches and technical problems of the original and it's actually a really good game. It doesn't have the story and characters we've come to expect from FF but it's a nice grueling dungeon crawler. It deserves credit (though I understand not on this list because it's limited to Nintendo releases.... seriously Square Enix just rerelease all of them already)
@Wargoose "I think there's a bit of nintendo fan bias in the poll." Well of course, this is only ranking FF games that have appeared on Nintendo systems. I'm not sure what you're complaining about, as VII ranked 3rd and V ranked 7th? Did you mean VIII? If so I think the difference between their placement is only a matter of personal preference rather than one being strictly better than the other. I'd be happy with them in either order. I think NL's assessment of VII is spot on though. The game was revolutionary in its time, but if you don't have nostalgia for it it doesn't hold up well at all. I'm satisfied with the list's top 3.
@bigpale
We are almost in complete agreement, I would just switch 10 with 8 and 5 with 3.
VI is best on the SNES or PSX (Anthology) in my opinion. The GBA version has a better translation & additional content at the end, but they butchered the music. The SNES version is a masterpiece. The PSX version has slower load times into battles, but makes up for it with some great CGI movies. All that said, VI is my greatest game of all time regardless of the platform.
@NoxAeturnus ignore me completely i somehow managed to read the order completely wrong.
Apologies to all, my bad. Really don't know what I was thinking
@Wargoose I'm sure lunch rooms now are warring on Breath of the wild vs Horizon Zero Dawn.
@Wargoose You're good, it could happen to anyone!
The only Final Fantasy game I've ever played was III on the DS. I liked it, but not really enough to sell me on the franchise. To be fair, it is only #9 on this list. But later on the DS, I discovered SMT and have been obsessed with those games ever since.
@FredsBodyDouble
IX hasn't aged too poorly, I recently played it and it is still a wonderful game. And V gets points for the job/class system alone, but the game itself is super fun to this day
oh man this list.... reeks
I don't want to get nitpicky about which one belongs in which order, I'm just glad that a version of my favorite game took first place. Definitely surrounded by people of fine taste here.
However...I personally don't get all the love for FFIX. It was a good game and definitely worthy of the Final Fantasy name, but it was low on my list of preferred entries. Battles felt like they dragged, the character designs were just not great--not a single badass among them except for Beatrix and she wasn't a permanent party member...admittedly, I didn't finish it but I got to disc 3 on PSOne before I gave up on it. It's just okay to me, not the series highlight by any stretch. But that's just my opinion...
Top 3 are correct! Huzzah!
@bigpale
Chrono Trigger is way better than any FF game.
The more interesting question is which FF games is Chrono Cross better than.
My personal top 3 would of been
Final fantasy 10
Final fantasy 13 (don't hurt me)
Final fantasy 7/7 remake
I am shocked! I had no idea so many people felt the same way about this game!
IX is barely #2, I can accept. It has the hallmarks of a Final Fantasy game where VII only lightly-awkwardly fuses those medieval fantasy concepts with modern-esque settings.
But VI is #1?! Heck no! VI is LESS coherent than V AND doesn't do as well as any of the above-mentioned games in player direction! V struck a balance, VII suffered minor pacing issues on a blind run, and IX just gets a bit boring and aimless later on — all nowhere near VI's directional trainwreck (both in terms of guidance and storytelling). "VI set the tone for VII." That just means it's a trailblazer, not objectively better automatically.
Also, very glad I took the time to click the link to the Simpsons clip. Nicely done
Switch owners aren't missing anything with the full FFXV. It sucks.
Chrono Trigger remains the best final fantasy. It's so good it was disqualified and will always be the unofficial #0, way above the best final fantasy.
Also not a single FF can hold a candle to XC1, even Chrono Trigger isn't as incredible.
Anyone who disagrees with my comment is a Pony and shouldn't be allowed to comment on this website.
VI got number 1?! Amazing, shocking, and all that. That one happens to be my favorite, too, so yay!
@Rhaoulos 100% agreed about FF15, that was a waste of time and money. Glad I bought it used, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to exchange it.
Chrono Trigger is great, but not the best Final Fantasy. Fight me.
What's XC1?
@RushDawg Chrono Trigger is better than FF 1 through 20 (I can see the future with 150% accuracy)
@playstation_king Amazingly, I got super hyped for FF7 Remake, downloaded the free demo, and haven't even booted it up. I dunno, I think I may just pass on it.
@TG16_IS_BAE XC1 = Xenoblade Chronicles 1. Or Monado Story as I like to call it. The best RPG of all time.
I got FF15 royal edition for £15 and it was a waste of money and time.
@Rhaoulos Ah, never tried Xenoblade Chronicles, didn't look like my cup of tea. Mario is the best Final Fantasy.
Fun fact: 10/12 of those are available on PS Vita right now.
Slight disagreements on the list. But fun to argue about anyway.
@Wargoose yeah the card game is terrible, especially compared to 8. Chocobo hot and Cold is a slog as well
Now Square have got around to releasing the entire story, FFXV actually holds up really well. The battle system is a lot more fun than pressing menu buttons and the central 4 characters are some of the best Square has ever put in a game.
The best thing about it is the way around the game is built: normally FF titles open up as you play them and then all sense of urgency goes out the window as you gear up for the final boss but decide to spent the next 3 months hunting for treasure instead of saving the world.
FFXV flips this on its head and makes the game narrower as you go along meaning you can waste time with side quests whilst the story is unimportant but concentrate on taking down the final boss once things kick up a gear.
I appreciate it’s not for everyone. The fact that you need to watch a 2-hour movie as the prologue doesn’t help but now everything is in place it flows really well: Watch Kingsglaive, Play Episode Ardyn, play through the main game and the DLC episodes at the right time, watch Brotherhood just before you go into the final level and then read Dawn of the Future to see what the story was going to end up as with the cancelled DLC.
FFVII forever.
@HobbitGamer
Well...
1. FF 8
2. FF 9
3. FF 10
4. FF 3 NDS
5. FF 12 TZA
6. FF 10-2
7. FF Tactics
8. FF 4 NDS
I'm glad to see the FF community still has some sense. I agree with most of this list. Knock X way out of the top 5 and replace it with FF8 and we have a deal.
You forgot Bravely Default.
@RadioHedgeFund
Agreed entirely. FF15 gets ragged on a lot, but the main problem is with its storytelling. It's unfortunate that you either have to look the story up online, or go through all the different hoops to get it (Kingslave, episodes, etc..). The director messed up what should have been a special game, and it is special in almost every way except main story delivery. I would rate it as my #3 FF if the storytelling wasn't so messed up within the game itself.
I only played X. I missed VII-IX due to choosing the N64 over PS1 back in the day (funded by a newspaper round, so having two consoles was not an option). X came along at the right time in my life where I had sufficient free time to play through a game of that size to 100%. Not played any since as I just don't have the free time to commit to massive RPGs any more. So for me, my favourite is X.
Hmm... Glad FFIX got second, but I dunno if I'd describe the story as wacky... 🤔
I think most people will agree the top 3 maybe in a different order.
But X, X-2 and XII are trash.
@Wargoose True but VIII was one of the first games I had for my very first pc when I was a teen struggling to get along with myself and the world, thus the story resonated with me.
FF VI Is just a great game but I could never really get into VII and never touched IX
@TG16_IS_BAE tbh I only put the remake there next to 7 as its the same story, the original final fantasy 7 was better and had more of an impact
@TG16_IS_BAE Ah, never tried Xenoblade Chronicles, didn't look like my cup of tea. Mario is the best Final Fantasy.
Do you like Single Player MMO's? Then you should play it but there is a Single Player MMO Final Fantasy game too, Final Fantasy 12 so I am not sure why XC was brought up in a Final Fantasy thread.
I want a remake of FFV so bad... Please give it the FFVII remake treatment...
This headline is a trick question
For me the pinnacle of the FF series was the job system. I've had way more fun experimenting with the different jobs then I've ever had with any of the pre-build characters.
So V and III (and tactics if it were on this list) are way at the top for me.
I've missed all the PS games since I've only really owned nintendo consoles and playing them now they aged pretty poorly. I couldn't really get into VII and now I'm playing IX and I have mixed feelings about it (running into a soflock didn't really help and why did they have to make Steiner this annoying?).
@Crono1973 12 is awful, couldn’t get into that either. I’m good though, I don’t like forcing myself to play things I dislike. The other guy I was talking to brought up Xc1, and I didn’t know what he meant.
@playstation_king The PlayStation original blew my mind as a child. Growing up from the NES onward and being able to grow with the transitioning technology was truly a once in a lifetime experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Actually marathoning this series right now funny enough. I just finished ff4 today (had never played 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, or 12). I agree more or less with the ranking of those ones, and 6 has always been my favorite.
Did Cloud start the trend of over sized swords in video games? I'm sure they got bigger after 7 lol.
Anyhoo, 6 wins for the opening music alone. Those 3 mechs trunching in snow...so epic.
@mariomaster96 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H47ow4_Cmk0
Original FFVII over FFXII: ZA? Yeah, I don’t think so. People have such poor taste in games.
@Crono1973 Someone finally said it, I have no nostalgia for FF IX, played it for the first time last year, after taking 6 months to play 30 hours I don't feel any urge to complete it, such a slog to play, the story is fine, same as the characters, but I feel nothing playing that game.
FF VII never played as well until last year, that on the other hand, being even a hater before, was a phenomenal game, it looks ugly, but plays great, sounds even better and has a, albeit convoluted, interesting and well done story, FF VII is not the greatest game of all time, but it should be second.
Also FF VI is undeniably the best, is not my favorite, VIII is for gameplay, soundtrack and the locations so unique and inspiring, but VI deserves being called the best.
@Rhaoulos
You've clearly played Chrono Trigger, so I'm completely baffled as to why you'd say Xenoblade Chronicles is the best JRPG of all-time. At best, it's a Top 10 JRPG, at best.
Final Fantasy 9 is number 2 what the hell?
It's got such a wishy washy group of characters and a boring story about planets eating planets...to each his own I suppose but still
Glad to see FF9 ranking high on this list. It's probably my favorite and I got the feeling that most people didn't like it.
VI. Besides my affinity for anything on the SNES (my second favorite console of all time, after the Switch and before PS2), everything about this game is fantastic. Amazing characters, a truly enigmatic villain, multiple paths you can take, a ton of variety, a huge world, and perhaps the greatest soundtrack in a video game I've ever heard. It still gives me chills. Everyone thinks Chrono Trigger is the greatest RPG on the SNES, and I love Chrono Trigger, but nothing tops FFVI.
Most overrated? Either VII or X. I like them both, but they get more praise than they deserve.
I can't argue with the (current) top 4 (X, VII, IX, VI). That's exactly how I would rank them.
FFVI is perfection! Beautiful pixel art, best soundtrack in the series IMO, a cast of protagonists you care about, great villains, an epic and emotional plot that strikes the perfect balance beteween lighthearted goofiness and more darker themes, superb gameplay. A true masterpiece!
A solid ranking. My faith in the Nintendolife community is validated.
The OG FF belongs at the bottom for me. I can certainly appreciate the significance of that game, but it has aged extraordinarily poorly.
Final fantasy III(VI) and chrono trigger are both great, in their own rights. From story to art to battle systems. You can love pizza and tacos, and choose one over the other, on any given day. Then ffxiii, x, vii, ix, ii.
What's perhaps more surprising is that only VI has a score of 9 or above, and even then, only barely. Makes me wonder whether Final Fantasy games have gone down in gamer's minds over the years or perhaps are simply growing staler as time goes by?
I always thought bravely default is like sort of like an extension of 5 with the job system arrangement.....which isn't a bad thing.
@Dramlin
Yea agree it was going so well until the second half....i almost stopped the game entirely.
Interesting feature article.
I agree that VI Advance is the best one. I would personally put XII ZA and X as the remaining of my top 3. IX is a bit too high for me.
FF9 on PC running the Moguri mod is the way to go. The background renders have all been upscalled in a far better way than Square managed to do, and the FMV movies have been frame interpolated to 30fps (the originals were 15fps). It's still an old game, but it looks much less pixelated this way,
Moguri comparison - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uMcim5KEi8
Finally the argument has been settled.
Final Fantasy 6 is better than Final Fantasy 7.
Kidding, kidding, don't worry. No flame war intended. We love you, FF7 fans, despite your shortcomings.
Jokes aside, I have so much love for FF6.
Here's hoping I-VI make their way to Switch, preferably in a "Collection of Final Fantasy" that gets a physical release (unlike SaGa...). It would also be nice if FFXI and the FFXIII trilogy made their way to modern consoles as well (I think a Switch port of XI is possible, but XIV, I wouldn't hold my breath).
I also hope Final Fantasy IX gets a physical release in the future. Probably won't, but I can dream.
@NoxAeturnus with FFVII it doesnt help that the modern ports of the game end up looking worse than the original largely thanks to the higher res character models clashing with the original resolution backdrops. The original PC version iirc is the base of these versions which had its own set of issues though the midi music of that version was patched there are still some graphical quirks such as the shadows during battle. not sure if square has the source code for the original psone versions of the games though.
not saying the original version was some graphical masterpiece, but like a lot of other games from that era its graphical flaws become more apparent when played at a higher resolution
@WhiteTrashGuy with FFV i would love to see it get some form of definitive version though i would say i would preffer a visual remake over a re-imagining like FFVIIR.
V was definitely one of my all time favorite FF games, i loved the gameplay and enjoyed the smaller cast of characters, with FFVI i felt the cast was maybe a bit too big with a lot of characters getting forgotten about for most of the game,.
if FFV and VI did get remakes it would be nice to see the locations get a touch up to add some more variety since they had to work with limited tilesets originally
I've been playing through Final Fantasy X on the Switch for the first time. I'm not sure where I would rate it but I'm not as into it as I was some of the others. I am enjoying it and as I am getting closer to the end I am starting to enjoy it more but I think FF VI will always be my favorite.
@Mgalens Oh certainly I agree with what you're saying, but graphics aren't the only thing that doesn't hold up well.
I'm happy to see that my top 2 Final Fantasy games are the same as this list. VI and IX are just so timeless!
@NoxAeturnus i remember the translation being very rough by modern standards. i think it was done in house, in terms of the actual plot i enjoyed the base game but arent a fan of the compilation stuff, i felt going back to a smaller cast allowed each party member to get more screen time (outside of maybe vincent)
Gameplay wise i would say FFV is by far my favorite while VII is alongside FFVI though i did find that the psone games had more varied worlds.
V, VII and IX are my favorites of the series though i would put FFVI a close second to them and FFXII Zodiac age 3rd (the zodiac version fixed a major complaint i had with the original)
Id say a good thing about the FF series is theres something for everyone which is why i feel theres no "best" game.
@Mgalens
I have such fond memories of playing V on the PS1 collection withy buddy. The music is top notch and the classic fantasy setting is perfect.
Wait, did I miss Final Fantasy IV: The After Years?
II, III, I, XIII, XV, IX, VIII, X, V, VII, IV, XII, VI
Very unpopular order but it's mine. I think 12 gets way too much hate!
Chrono better than all of these
@Desrever Well, there are a number of video game series where the first game is the worst one among the mainline titles due to all the improvements that the sequels will inevitably make to the formula: "Metroid," "Pokémon Red/Green/Blue," "Fire Emblem," "Kid Icarus," "Street Fighter," "Streets of Rage," "Super Smash Bros.," etc.
Although, there are also a few series like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Earthworm Jim" where the first game is far from the worst even among just the mainline titles.
@Dramlin I'll easily take an inferior soundtrack in order to get an improved translation and extra content. That stuff matters much more to me to improve the actual game experience rather than something that merely affects the presentation. Even if it's ear-gratingly bad music, you can always just mute the game, anyway.
@Crono1973 I agree that "Xenoblade Chronicles" is the best RPG ever made to date, but it's not an MMO, as it is not massively (or have any) multiplayer, nor does it have any online capabilities. A single player MMO is a blatant oxymoron in the first place by the very expansion of its acronym (Alphabetically Concise Representation of Ordered, Numerous Yammerings by their Monograms).
My list from worst to best in my opinion would be.
15 VI
14 XV
13 II
12 III
11I
10 XIV
9 XII
8 XIII
7 IV
6 X
5 XI
4 IX
3 VIII
2 V
1 VII
8 is the best. Fight me.
Only one complaint. In my eyes FFX is a turd on the bottom of FFXII's ugly shoes.
I always fight over which is my fav between X, IX and VII
Top 5 for me
1. Final. Fantasy 10
2. Final Fantasy 7Remake
3. Final Fantasy 12
4. World of a final fantasy
5. Final fantasy 13
@Jey887 8 is the best but the original one, not this ***** remaster which remasters absolutely nothing except few characters of which one is totally butchered (I am talking about Squall which face and hair were changed without a reason at all)..the remaster has awful graphics and terrible framerate
@Broosh Nay
TOP5 for me
1. Final Fantasy VII / Final Fantasy VIII (PS1 versions)
2. Final Fantasy IX (PS1 version)
3. Final Fantasy X (PS2 version)
4. Final Fantasy Origins (PS1 version)
5. Final Fantasy XII (PC version)
@BulbasaurusRex oh really the best? So what´s your favorite role for Rex? Wizard or Paladin? Oh, really? You cannot choose classes nor play it like a class-free RPG? Then ...then it is NOT an RPG!!!!!!!!!
I think to this day, IX has aged better than nearly any of the games that came before it. VI was great at the time but it just never could hold my attention after all these years. IX is still my go to
@BlackenedHalo But...but your profile picture! 9 is not your #1? And 8 ranked even higher?! 😮
@Broosh well, I love Vivi!
@BlackenedHalo As we all do, my child 😌👍
VI, followed by IX and VII, sounds perfectly right!
Still have my GBA copy of VI and it is fantastic!
Edit: Oh, is this an old bumped up article? Sigh... You can bet I've already commented on this one before.
Can't argue with the top 3! Would have liked to see XII a little higher, but I must be in the minority of those that actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The world of Ivalice and the races inhabiting it is one of the most interesting the series has had so far. It's just too bad that Vaan is probably one of the worst FF protagonists ever, so bland! I seem to remember reading once in the past that the main protagonist was going to be a bit more like Basch or Balthier instead of a younger guy. That would have been way more interesting.
6 through 10 are the golden years. They told good stories, had huge casts of cool characters, and all had some variation of the almost perfect ATB system (besides perhaps 10, but close enough). Everything prior feels primitive and everything after feels like they lost their understanding of why we love FF. While 12 was solid, I really just can't recommend 13 or 15. I do think 11 was fantastic and I understand 14 has evolved into something quite good as well.
@BlackenedHalo 8 needs a legit HD remaster with full 3d graphics, and not in the VII-remake kinda way, but a true remake with the gameplay intact.
Is 6 really as good as everyone says? I've never played it.
But why the GBA version of VI? SNES version is better, especially sound quality.

I'm in a strange position that I only got into this series really really late. I've only played Crystal Chronicles, FFVIII, FFIV and FFIV The After Years to completion. I played most of X too and about half of VII.
I'm very eager to play the rest of the series too but it all takes so much time.
Top 5
FF 7
FF 4
FF 5
FF 9
FF 12
I like all of them except for 8.
@tsdenizen
I feel Bravely Default made it obsolete
Personal top 5:
VI, IV, IX, VII, X
4th ff7
3rd ff6
2nd ff9
1st ff10.
That is all.
For nintendo titles i'd say
1-FFX
2-FFXII
3-FFIX
4-FFVII
5-FFVI
Also where the fck is crystal chronicles
Happy 20th anniversary to Final Fantasy X
VI may be my favorite main entry but X is a close second, mostly because of sentimental value due to it being my first exposure to the franchise through playing it on a friend's PS2 since I didn't have one growing up. I've bought this game at least 5 times between PS3, PS Vita, PS4, PC and Switch
The voice acting is atrociously bad but it weirdly doesn't stop the story from being extremely engaging largely due to the character writing and gorgeous presentation. This game has not aged a day for a launch window PS2 game
@Wargoose My issues with VIII are the Junction System breaks the balance of the game. You could say the same about VII once you get mime or knights of the round materia, but they were near the end of the game. From what I remember you could break VIII once you got siren, the limit break system was also really abuseable.
You don't have to abuse it. You know, most JRPG's allow you to grind to set your own difficulty and that's all this is. You don't want to draw/refine magic to abuse the junctions system, then don't.
I'm happy to see final fantasy vi(iii) as number 1. That game is everything. But final fantasy iv(ii) was the one that got me started on rpgs. Still cant get over the sacrifices in that game...especially the twins, palom and porom
But this is also a stark reminder that final fantasy tactics not on the switch, is a travesty
A perfect list to me. First time I can say I agree with this platform.
Works for me. A bad port of my favorite game of all time is still a version of my favorite game of all time, so I'm happy to see what took 1st place.
For me, I’d go: VII, I, IV, IX, X, VI…big gap….XIII, XII
Beyond that, I’ve never played the rest of the series, though I always seem to hear that V is really good

VIII skippable? My heart hurts by reading that sentence.
Vi, VII, VIII and IX are the “golden era” IMO
X is fine but overrated as hell (And it starts the decline of the series)
To me VIII will always be number one because it was my first FF and nostalgia is a powerful thing (but I do understand that IX and VI are the better games, and totally agree with them being on the top of the list)
Both SNES games, Dawn of Souls, and FF IV Advance are missing! They are separate releases with different user scores!
@RushDawg just curious to know if there is a final fantasy that isn't available on Nintendo hardware that you'd consider to be in the top 5 spots?
this is a Nintendo website, so i imagine ratings are influenced by that.
FFVII is the PS1 flagship game, while FFVI was one of the best games on the SNES.
I take the list with a grain of salt. My personal favorites are VII and IX <3
X felt incredible at the time of release with the PS2, but replaying it shows its flaws.
VIII is very underrated, the junction system holds it back a bit, but I loved the story & characters when it all started to make sense in the end. Also best soundtrack of any FF game!
@EriXz The original FF Tactics is my favorite Final Fantasy game in general and that's only ever been on PlayStation, PSP and Mobile despite the fact the sequels were exclusive to GBA and DS
I stopped playing FF X HD after realizing there's a win button in the game, giving you max money, level, etc.
Shame on me for automatically assuming VII would be number 1.
@moodycat
Oh Moody B Jones, you silly goose. IX is a gem of a game, top notch
Fun fact: you don't have to use settings or exploit mechanics that make a game easier.
I like all that I’ve played but FF XIII and it’s sequels are still my favourites. Would love to play em again on Switch.
Also, FF Tactics A2 is one of the best games ever made!
Final Fantasy VI is SO overrated... Chrono Trigger and Terranigma in the SNES are much better games, in my opinion.
Final Fantasy VII is definitely the best in the series, one the finest games ever made (with one of the best stories ever created, in general), but I understand that in this site it doesn't have that good reputation, as it hasn't been to a Nintendo console until very recently. Nintendo fans can't appreciate it now the way it was by then, specially with that remake they're doing.
I believe FF IX has, by far, the best writing in the entire franchise. Witty and funny like no other
@LXP8 Probably because no spin-off games are on the list.
Ehmmm... strongly missing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance!
@EriXz
Great question!
I know this article’s list doesn’t count spin-offs, but I personally don’t care and consider the original Final Fantasy Tactics to be a Top 5 FF game.
Also, I’ve never played it personally, but FF14 is hugely popular. Any list of the top FF games is totally incomplete without it.
FF is a really strange series for me. I own all of the (non MMO) mainline games and most of the spinoffs, but haven't played all of them. I won't play them out of order, and with how time consuming they tend to be, I sometimes get stuck for a few years before picking the series up again. I have 9 FF games including spinoffs in my backlog out of 82 total games. I just bought FF XII for the third time on Switch (after PS2 and PS4 copies) despite never playing it beyond the first couple hours. Hopefully a portable copy gives me the impetus to get beyond this one.
I like reading articles like this but it's clearly just opinion, and everyone's got their own favorite, so maybe the title should be "Our Favorite FF Games"? Seems as silly as writing an article called "The Top 10 Foods of All Time".
Also sticking up for FF9 because it's my favorite.
Final Fantasy II "While work on a translation of this Famicom game was apparently started,"
Game seems to have been actually closed to finished when they canceled it. It was fully playable, Square just canceled it before it could be given the last text rewrites it needed (fixing some poorly written lines), deciding to focus on the other three games (which at the time was a lot for their tiny American division) they had planned for 1991.
Currently playing Final Fantasy III, both the Famicom and DS versions.
So far it's looking like the DS version has been mostly easier than the original version. It's feeling like they reduced the size of enemy encounters, for one thing.
If we count only the main games, this is what my top 10 Final Fantasy games would look like:
1. Final Fantasy VI (Super NES, GBA)
2. Final Fantasy IX (Switch)
3. Final Fantasy IV (Super NES, GBA, Nintendo DS)
4. Final Fantasy V (Super NES, GBA)
5. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)
6. Final Fantasy VII (Switch)
7. Final Fantasy X/X-2 (Switch)
8. Final Fantasy III (Famicom, Nintendo DS)
9. Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls (GBA)
10. Final Fantasy VIII (Switch)
@RushDawg yeah, and it seems tactics it's quite popular among fans so I guess you need to be able to select all games across all platforms to truly understand what fans consider to be the very best
15 isn’t that bad. It may not be great, but deserves better than 12th, imho.
Not to really suspect people, X should be near the bottom…I don’t understand the love the game gets, except maybe being some people’s first FF game. The battle system is great….but ooof, that story is horrible.
Also-Final Fantasy 8 and 6 are the best ones
VI Advance was one of my fav games of all time and my fav FF game. My rankings now go as follows:
1. VI Advance
2. XII
3. X
4. IV
5. VII
6. V Advance
7. III
8. IX
9. VIII
10. XV Pocket
(admittedly never "completed" 8 and 9 though, so may be being unfair).
Removed - unconstructive
@MichaelHarvey No..only because it should have been 13 out of 12 haha. That fact that it even exists is horrific.
Oh there's a lot of great ones!
4,5,6,7,9,10 I've played and loved.
8 I've seen being played at a friend's house (along with kingdom hearts, loved those 2 too!)
Recently picked up 12, and after 20 hours decided that it wasn't for me. Not the battle system or dungeon design which are great. But the utter lack of great characters and story (up to that point.)
1 is a fun time of you're patient, and get the gba version! 😂
My favourite is 6, love 9 and was amazed how, just mesmerizing, 7 still was when I first played it this year!
@FredsBodyDouble Another reason was that there were things that Square cannot get past Nintendo's censors at the time.
There are tons of plotline character deaths and the endgame is the heroes venturing to Hell to defeat the Emperor who has overthrown Satan to become the new ruler of Hell.
FFVII is 25 years old? Old enough to have served the life sentence it received for murdering Nintendo during the 5th console generation.
While I love ff 6 I’d still recommend the snes version over the gba. Really hoping the pixel remaster does the game justice.
Yay Final Fantasy IX on the second spot
It's criminal that Final Fantasy 1-6 plus Tactics, Tactics Advance, Tactics A-2, Tactics Ogre, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, Mystic Quest, and Chrono Trigger are all not on Switch yet. Square Enix really need to stop with their mobile obsession.
Final Fantasy VII is a lot better than IX, they are not even remotely in the same league.
My vote is FFXII reworked into a legitimate MMO, which would be perfect for the Switch, with FFTA's music mixed in for good measure.
My opinion.
Best : VIII, IX, X, Tactics
Okay : X-2, XII, III NDS, IV NDS
Blah : XIII, VII
In my experience:
1. FFIV Advance
2. FFIV DS
3. FFVI Advance
4. FFCC Ring of Fates
5. FFTA
6. FFCC The Crystal Bearers
7. The Last Story
8. Lost Odyssey
9. FFIV The After Years
10. FFCC Echoes of Time
11. I guess FFVII
12. Kingdom Hearts I
Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Rydia... these names speak to me on a different level.
im still on team V, VII,IX (though FFXIV is amazing)
really i feel like theres an FF game for every move.
i just wish it was easier to play anything before VII on console nowadays.
when I didn't see 13 on the first page I was like "psshh"
but when I didn't see it on the second page I was like "yeah!"
wait you can't really have ix over vii VETO (jk)
but I like the vi pick
@playthedangame Awesome to hear!
FF VI is gonna rock your world. 🙂
@AlienX palom and porom, their sacrifice. So young, so brave.
FFVI being #1 is a pleasant surprise! It's easily my favorite of the bunch and one of my all-time favorites. I've only played the SNES version and can't say I'm really interested in the GBA version personally, but as long as the game itself is #1, I'm happy. I'd probably rank my top 5 from what I've played so far as follows:
1. FFVI
2. FFIV
3. FFVII
4. FFIX
5. FFXIV (Haven't even finished the base campaign, but I really love what I have played!)
About the first game:
"...new players will definitely need to wash this down with a strong glass of historical context."
That's a great line.
My all-time favorite game is FFVI and my second favorite Final Fantasy game is The Last Story
@RushDawg The sub title makes it clear that the list only features games that appear on Nintendo systems, so with that context clearly given the title is fine as it is.
They got it right! 6 is indeed the best!
My ranking:
1) FF6
2) FF7
3) FF4
4) FF8
5) FF9
6) FF12
7) FF10
8) FF5
9) FF3
10) FF1
11) FF13
12) FF2
MMO's don't count.
@foodmetaphors Last Story had one of the best soundtracks!
@ShadowofTwilight22 You had to be there.
@winter0912319 Better than everyone says.
@FredsBodyDouble I agree, except 4 was also a masterwork.
@Quarth Agreed!
Xii should be higher
I'm glad that Pocket Edition exists so that there is a version of FFXV for Switch/smartphone.
But yeah, probably better to play it on PS4/PS5/Xbox/PC if you are at home and near one of those devices.
Rankings (note these are user rankings on this site, not Nintendolife editorial rankings) notwithstanding, the Switch is a great Final Fantasy handheld (and the heir in this respect to the PSVita/PSP, which could play FF1-9; sadly the PSP's excellent Crisis Core seems to have been lost to the sands of time...)
My biggest gripe with FFVIII (probably my favorite FF game having played all of them except 3 and 5 - though I have to say XIV is an outstanding FF game and MMO) is that the remastered version ripped out the analog movement control of the original. ;-(
@Grail_Quest I can definitely recommend FFXIV as an excellent Final Fantasy game that absolutely deserves its position as a numbered entry in the series. The Heavensward and Shadowbringers expansions in particular are exceptional (and Heavensward is included in the free trial.)
While I agree FFVI is great, this simply a terrible list, which really is to be expected here.
I mean, FFXII is so much better than most of those above on this list.
The best one will remain the Final Fantasy XV, which was my first Final Fantasy game since I started playing this game with my friends at MMORPG. We were selling some stuff on online marketplaces like https://igitems.com/finalfantasy14-currency to get some additional cash, improve our computers, and help our parents, it was a really wonderful time, and I still have nostalgia about these times. Too bad that they closed servers last year, so the only way to play this game now is to emulate your own FF XV server.
Wow! Is FFVI truly the best one? I might have to play it. And FFIX as well. I have only played I, II VII and VIII remastered.
@Grail_Quest VII is still my favorite.
My favorite is 9, but I think that’s because it was also the first Final Fantasy game I played.
Despite my profile picture my favorite is 10, it was my first one.
I'm glad 6 came out on top. It's a masterpiece. Terra's theme is simply one of the most beautiful compositions ever created on or off silicon.
FFVII >>>>> FFIX > FFVI > FFX > FFIV > FFVIII >>> The rest (I haven't played XII yet, though).
I know it might sound mainstream and whatever, but FFVII is still the best game ever created, even better than the marvelous Zelda BotW.
If you think otherwise is most likely because you didn't play it when it was released.
FFVIII and XII too low.
FFVI too high.
The end.
i played IX, X, XII and XV pocket. i hated all of them. well....i played X for only 5 minutes because i can't play a jrpg without japanese voices. final fantasy isn't for me.
Been playing FFX on my phone at 4x resolution, actually still a really pretty game like that. If I can power through beating it again I'll try X2 finally.
Still amazes me they haven't done something with the second best FF, Tactics.
Man i loved final Fantasy X maybe i will revisit
10 is the one I liked the most when I was younger, so yeah probably 10 for me.
Final Fantasy Adventure....which is really just the first of the Mana games. So, does not count. The only other one I have played is Crystal Chronicles! Sometimes I would like to try a main line one, but there are so many to choose!
Hoo boy, treading into this minefield, aren't we, Nintendo Life?
I'll just sit back with my popcorn and watch the flame war commence.
My personal list:
1 Final Fantasy VIII (best protagonist arc, best music, best love story, best card game a very deep chapter)
2 Final Fantasy X (innovative story and gameplay)
3 Final Fantasy IV (I love Cecil's character progression, very well written fo the 90's)
4 Final Fantasy VI (great game, I love all the aspects)
5 Final Fantasy IX (great art style, some flaws in the second half of the story)
6 Final Fantasy VII (a very good game, all the useless and bad-written spinoffs and the new fanbase starts to ruin my memories of this gem)
7 Final Fantasy V (fun gameplay, the story is flat)
8 Final Fantasy I (a classic but for me the main feature for a jrpg is the story, and this one obviously lack)
9 Final Fantasy XII ( the protagonist is bad, the story is boring, too much grinding)
Never played FFII, FFIII, FFXIII and FFXV.
IX is so far ahead of the rest for me it's silly. I wanted to like XII, and I've tried many times...but it has that detached combat that the Xenoblade series and MMOs have. I'm not saying it's bad, I just can' t make it click. Anyway after IX it would be VI and then IV, in the mainline series. Tactics is my actual answer...
Also shout out to 4 Heroes of Light. Not the best all around but an amazing score and I love the look.
It's nice to see what I have been saying for years, that FFVI is the best FF game ever made. After that the series just went downhill.
X is the best for me. I loved all the characters, music, and I made sure to beat down Seymour for trying to forcefully marry Yuna.
IX is the best of them all.
I haven’t played all of them, but my favorite so far is Final Fantasy X
VII and X are my #1 and #2. I haven't played them all, but man those 2 have my favorite battle systems and summons.
I love these lists and reading all the opinions. I won't lie, I get why ffxii wasn't the most popular, but I was addicted to it, loved the music and gambit system, etc. But VI is absolutely the best in my view.
I still have a bunch to play as I've only played through FF 7 and 9 so far. I'm currently playing through crisis core, and I own FF8, X and XII. I did get about 8-10 hrs into X but then dropped it for something else a few years back. I guess I should try it out again after seeing some of these comments.
Now for my opinion, I equally loved 9 just a hair more than 7. Only because the ending is probably one of the best endings in any video game I've played. That's just me though 😁
IMO.. FFX is my favourite for nostalgia reasons. FFVI is objectively the best overall. FFVII is second. FFIV to round out the Top 3. FFIX has the best story. FFXII has the worst story. FFXIII is the most overhated & underrated. FFXV is the strangest because while still also fun, it was more sidequest & exploration than main story to me.
All in all, I love the Final Fantasy series. It's been with since I was kid and probably why JRPG's are without a doubt my favourite genre. Cheers to more years!
... Wun can only hope.
1. ix
2. vi
3. vii
4. xiv
5. x
I've always felt that VII and IX were close because they were both excellent games - to me VII had a better storyline. I enjoyed IV on the DS too so good to see that up there. I haven't played FF in a long time because of time commitments...once you start one it never seems to stop...
It would be impossible for me to agree on any list or make a list myself, because every time I sit down and try to rank these games I seem to value each pro and con differently. I guess it's based on my mood really.
However, my personal favourite has been IX for the longest time. I prefer that one over VI.
And I would place X over VII, I just think it's a better game that holds up very well even to this day. And I actually like the turn based combat system in X better. I love the way it allows you to take your time to strategise.
The story is on par with VII in my opinion. The growth system is in my opinion better as well in that it gives you complete freedom to shape any character however you like.
But I get it, VII is very iconic and was very impressive for the time.
It also has some of the most iconic characters in the entire video game industry.
VII is still my favourite, and even favourite single player story game ever. I think it's because of the music mainly and the locations and characters, and especially how they all fit together. I have never seen any game even approach the same level of character. I tried IX on Switch, and those things didn't appeal as much there, though it seems like a fine game, mechanics wise.
Wrong, FFXII is the best mainline FF game on Nintendo consoles.
FFVI for me too, then FFV. I mean - FFVI gave us Ultros (and his sidekick Mr. Typhoon!).
Then I'd probably say VIII for me, sure it has its faults but I guess it has special place for me because it was first "modern" FF I played. Then it's all mesh with VII, IX and X. All had good things and lack some. I never got the superhype with VII - tho I do like the story itself.
After VIII I'd probably go with IV.
I have not played never games after X
Are we surprised 6 is the highest rated one. That game is still the best final fantasy game even today. Thats the first final fantasy game I ever played and I only played it cause of an accident. My sister wanted Kingdom Hearts and I accidentally bought 6, so when I started playing it I immediately loved it. I've gone on to play every single final fantasy game except the MMO ones and loved them all.
Final fantasy 7 really, really surprised me. Having no nostalgia for it and absolutely loving it to pieces 2 years ago!
My all time favorite can change any given day between 10 and 6. Both were so great story wise, but also added fun twists to their battle mechanics that really made these addictive!
I like a lot about FF9, but my most recent playthrough (on the Switch) made me realize how tedious it actually is. 4 5 6 & 7 for life.
This is one of those series that up to a certain point could do no wrong and then it all went really downhill. I haven't played XII yet, but to me, the moment they decided to pursue more realistic proportions for their characters, something was lost in the process. As such FF7 is the pinnacle of the series for me. 9 was a nice nod to the prior style, 6 was the best 2D one by a mile, and Chrono Trigger is the best FF not called FF.
