It's taken quite some time, but Square Enix recently confirmed the localised release of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, a mobile-only prequel to the rather excellent Octopath Traveler.
It's due out this Summer, but you can now sign up for the game's beta on Android in 'certain regions'. To have a chance to try it out ahead of time you need to go to this Google Play product page and pre-register, giving you a chance to take part.
We're certainly curious to see how this prequel shapes up, even if there's still lingering disappointment that it remains a mobile-only release.
HD-2D for smartphones – 3D CG screen effects added to pixelized graphics create a magical world on smartphones.
Eight-character party command-based battles – Form a party of up to eight characters to fight in evolved command-based battles. Smooth gameplay with swipe controls.
Choice of story between three reigning champions – The setting is the Orsterra continent. The protagonist is a “Chosen One” who will fight against a great evil that has achieved fortune, power, and fame.
Field commands – Take various actions towards characters on the field. Try out all sorts of things, such as “Listen” for information, “Steal” an item, “Hire” an ally, and more.
Are you going to try and register for the beta, or perhaps wait to pick up the full release? Let us know, as always, in the comments.

Cool that its a prequel and all but why can't it head to consoles??
@Dragwhite If it's free2play, then that's fine, let it be on mobiles only...
64 characters at launch. This sounds like another gachawoth ads and microtransactions. That would explain why it's mobile only.
Thanks for the heads up!!
Edit: not compatible
Nice, registered.
There are some really good f2p mobile games out there if you sift through the junk. Let's hope this is one of them.
Looks pretty cool. I'll sign up for it when it's available for iPhone. I really need to finish Octopath Traveler on the Switch.
Sorry what's on garbage is still garbage. Those fake HD 2D won't work with me Square Enix. Port it to console or you won't see a dime from me.
I’m hoping someone will do a let’s play.
It is possible to play a lot a spend little in a well-designed mobile game. Unfortunately, Squenix is infamously greedy and does NOT design its mobile games well at all. I say this as a former KH Cross addict. In my experience, the only mobile games that ARE designed well are made by small teams or even solo devs. Big companies are nearly incapable of resisting the siren song of anti-consumer monetization.
Well, I guess I'm just going to have to watch this on youtube like I did NieR Reincarnation, since I hate mobile games and gacha games.
It's been out for nearly 2 years and I played it on my youtube channel (Heisicx). The mobile factor does hurt it a lot
The story is good but darker than the OG. The music is insane!
I'd say wait for the soundtrack, it's the best thing about it
The wife got me a nice new phone and I've been looking for decent mobile games along the likes of Genshin. Unfortunately it's not that many. Seems like this one is gonna be good but we'll find out. Another mobile title from Square I'm interested in is FFVII Ever Crisis which I hope gets some news soon as its still set to release this year.
Never really been a mobile gamer myself; I prefer to do my heavy gaming on consoles… but I do understand the same is not the case in Japan where heavy mobile gaming is more the norm.
As such I hope this Octopath prequel is a quality experience that eventually comes to the Switch (along with other full JRPG mobile releases like Fantasian, Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, FF: Pixel Remasters, Echoes of Mana, etc.).
But of course what I really want is Octopath Traveler 2 on Switch asap!
... Wun can only hope.
