One of the many surprise announcements of last week's Nintendo Direct was the news that the Mario Strikers series would be making a return.
The next entry - Mario Strikers: Battle League, will take to the pitch on 10th June and supports both online and local multiplayer. If you're planning on going the digital route with this one, you might be interested to know just how big this game will be. According to an early listing on Nintendo's website and eShop game page, this latest entry will require around 3GB of free space.
The latest entry follows on from the Wii game Mario Strikers Charged, and the original GameCube entry - Super Mario Strikers. Pre-orders for Battle League are available now from Nintendo's website and the Switch eShop for $59.99 / £49.99 or your regional equivalent.

So looking forward to this. Physical please. Liked the GC title a lot and I felt the Wii game was a big improvement, and to this day Mario Strikers Charged is still my favorite Mario Sports title.
I know Nintendo are compression wizards but still, seems a little small? Hope that doesn't mean we are getting a small roster and/or small list of course options
The devs at Nintendo are absolute compression gods.
For reference, fifa 21 was around 40-50 GB depending on the platform, and the legacy version on the switch was 13.5 gb.
I’ve been really impressed with Mario Golf on switch, so I think I’ll get this one digital as well. I have too many cartridges as is to want another one to switch out
I've started getting all my multiplayer games digitally so this is good news that it's not too large (but also expected).
I get it's a spinoff game and all but how?
3GB?!? That’s a pretty small size.
It makes me think about going digital here. It's way more convenient to have it stored in the memory, to have it on me just in case, as it's a multiplayer fun.
Who sold their soul at Nintendo in order to do these compression techniques?
Cannot wait to have my physical copy next to the Gamecube and Wii games.
Where is My Boy, Dry Bones!!!?
Wow that is a very small file size. I have never played any of the Mario Strikers games before, looking forward to maybe being able to play a demo. I like some of the Mario Sport games so hopefully this one will be good too.
Had a blast with previous games, this one is a day 1 for me.
@Whalehome Is it really that good? It's been on my list for a while.
@JeanPaul it’s an 8/10 for me. I think it has good courses, especially with the updates they did to add more for free. I think the campaign and multiplayer is better than Mario Tennis which I played when it was free for a week.
Doesn't it also seem a little early to be revealing the file size? Like, is the game even finished? I don't recall if file sizes are always revealed this early but it seems a little too early to me.
Also yes that sounds really small and it does admittedly concern me a little bit.
Everyone is praising Nintendo for being good at compression. But I think the file size is still concerning. Probably a small roster with little content. Basically unfinished product waiting for DLC
My searchengine tells me that the gamecube game is 1.8 GB and the Wii game 2.0 GB.
The whole series seems to take only little space.
Im really happy this got announced as I know a lot of people wanted it for a while, and it gives new hope to other dormant franchises. I always felt the Wii Strikers was light on content and got repetitive though. I really hope this is better, but 3GB doesn't fill me with confidence!
@Axecon Super Mario 3D World is only 1.5 GB or something.
File size literally says nothing about the content. In games the most storage goes to audio (voice acting, non-midi music), video (pre-rendered) and textures.
People here are looking too deep into file size and think that represent gameplay content quantity.
MK8D is only 6.9 GB and a giant game like Smash Ultimate is 17 GB.
You save space easy if you don’t bloat it with unnecessary audio and other crap. Not to mention Nintendo would know how to compress for their own system.
Maybe wait until more gameplay trailers drop before the doom and gloom just from a file size reveal yeah?
Either Next level are using some amazing compression techniques, or this game is gonna start out like aces and super rush did at launch. I'm hoping for the former.
I love all the Mario Sports titles...Mario Tennis Aces was amazing, I thought-and I still play it regularly. So much fun and really quite tricky if you get the hang of it.
I always found Mario strikers too difficult to master to be good at...but I'll definitely give this a go. Physical just in case I don't like it.
Not looking forward to seeing my boy Toad get buffed about though!!
@fishbujin yeah but also remember that those were on SD consoles so assets would naturally be smaller. For reference, Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii was around 6GB-6.5GB while DE is 13.6GB (albeit with some extra content - maybe around 9GB-10GB) for the main game
WOW Mario Strikers Battle League only ocupy 3GB of space in our Switch, i hope this do not mean the game is light in content.
To be fair, I'm not surprised given the content of the first two games. There wasn't a lot going on in Strikers Charged outside of the few main game cups and the online mode. Assuming a similar pattern, I still won't be disappointed. Even with its "limited" content, Strikers Charged was one of my favorite games of all time because (like all Mario sports games) it was best played with others - either local or online. They're not meant to be a FIFA or MLB career campaign game.
I think MK8DX was something north of 6GB? This seems like it will require much less detail than the sprawling tracks of a racing game, and as others have mentioned, Nintendo are compression wizards.
Regardless, I'll be buying a physical edition on day one.
Day 1 purchase. One of my favorite Wii games, been waiting for a sequel since then. Thanks Nintendo.
I don't think compression is the reason. It's the cartoony textures and limited FMV and speech. In some games the characters never stop talking. With multiple language options it is no surprise that near 100GB is becoming quite common.
@Ventilator 3D World + Bowser's Fury is 2.9GB.
Hm, the eshop says 2.9GB for Mario Strikers.
I really need a demo of the game to make any decision on it. I liked Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, but I don’t know if I or my family will want another MP Mario sports title with nary a plot in the campaign unless it’s truly addictive fun.
Consider almost all Mario games outside of Paper Mario are using the same base models they may just be getting better in terms of rendering for maximum quality but lowest possible file size.
I hope there will be more playable characters in this game like Daisy, Birdo, Diddy Kong, Toadette, Bowser Jr., Kamek, Pom Pom, Dry Bowser, King Boo, Petey Piranha, & King Bob-Omb.
Love how it has a different name in Europe and potentially else where (Mario strikers battle league football) yet everybody is reporting on the game with the US and Canada tittle. Interesting that they felt the need to change the name in Europe to add football and didn't add soccer to the North American title.
3GB? I hope this is true because I'm really short on space right now. Also yes I've decided I will be buying this. I was on the fence about it but after booting up Mario Strikers on the Wii again I realised just how much I like it.
@Arkay Wow. That's amazing. As a collector,. i'll be going physical, but still
@BTB20 I were thinking of Wii U version. Just checked. 1.7.GB.
@GingerNinja
The biggest culprit in most games is texture quality. Most Switch games use very low resolution textures, so size isn’t really an issue for most of them.
By comparison, PS5 games like Forbidden West use extremely high quality texture assets. I’m actually surprised the game is only 90 gigs. It has better texture work than Cyberpunk on PC.
For Nintendo’s first party line-up, they often use highly stylized art that combines elements of cel shading and traditional shading techniques. In those circumstances, since realism isn’t the goal, they can get away with running low resolution texture assets since it isn’t very noticeable.
By comparison, if you changed Forbidden West’s texture resolutions to match what Nintendo uses, it would look absolutely awful.
It’s basically a design choice.
Another size eater is actually poor optimization practices. This isn’t common with 1st part studios (Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft all have stellar optimization teams on their games) but it is an issue with developers who prioritize multiplatform development. When you build a game for multiple systems, you want to reuse as much as you can and avoid changing what you don’t have to change. So optimization for each platform is a secondary concern for those publishers and studios, although many do go the extra mile (Dying Light 2 is a good example; it’s only 25 gigs on PS5 and Series Xboxes thanks to optimizing those versions for ultra fast SSDs; previous generation and PC are twice as large since they duplicate assets to reduce HDD seek times).
@InkIdols I'll be getting it physically as well, just good to know that it's a small filesize just in case.
That's not that big
