As fans of portable play on Switch many in the Nintendo Life team are big advocates of the Hori Split Pad Pro, which is simple (lacking wireless support and rumble) but brilliant for gaming. In recent times Hori has been bolstering the range too, confirming that a Grip is on the way alongside Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Mega Man versions that are due this month.
As you can see in the image above, in late December Hori also revealed a Sonic version; we were busy doing festive things and missed it at the time. Seemingly arriving on 31st January, it makes this a bumper month of options with these controllers.

It's probably sensible to stick with our original Black and Red versions but, well, they're all tempting. This scribe would argue that the Sonic ones are on another level, but there's some bias in favour of the Blue Blur, admittedly...
Are you tempted to pick these up?

I’m still waiting on any news for the release of the wired controller convert! This is my favorite controller because the D pad is excellent, especially for Tetris for whatever reason I never accidentally miss-drop unlike with the pro controller. Anyone have any more info on when the convert is being released?
Man I bought this split pad pro and It was kinda more comfortable however, it made my switch so damn wide and awkward feeling. Went back to the joycons and they felt way better.
Still my favorite alternative joy-con for the Switch.
But I'm not spending an extra $20 for some Sonic graphics.
No rumble = no thanks for me. I'm glad if others get enjoyment out of this product though.
I bought the Pacman version for yellow Thumbsticks, and preordered Mega Man version for being the best looking one yet.
I am not fan of this sonic design
@mezoomozaa Yeah Megaman looks way better than Sonic if you want some blue ones.
The Megaman design is just too good but this one's fine too. Just a heads up, this thing ain't immune to drifting as mine has developed a slight issue on the right stick. But thats after many hundreds of hours playing intense shooters and it still works fine by realigning the stick to center if you get what I mean.
@cylemmulo same
But when I went back to joy-cons, the way how uncomfortable that plays for me immediately came back.
I guess the extra width is a fine trade off for me.
@Rayquaza2510 haha to each their own I guess.
@Nintendaholic Your Tetris issues are probably because there's no central pivot in the pro controller's d-pad. It is the only thing I can't stand about it. I went and got an 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ just because of how much I hated the pro controller's d-pad.
@mezoomozaa It would look better if they went with his sprite instead of an anime art style, I think.
I’m buying this. It’s sonic. I don’t care
Got the Split Pad Pro along with an OLED Switch late last year and it was a hell of an upgrade for portable playing. Very happy with my purchase!
Nearly bought one of these controllers. But got a deal on joy cons for the same price. Might get one eventually
If only it were wireless...
I love the Split Pad Pro but ever since I purchased the BinBok joy con controllers from Amazon, I haven't used the Split Pad Pro since. The BinBok are more comfortable, can be used wirelessly, have gyro support and rumble. I cannot comment on durability yet since I've only had them for a month or so, but so far so good. I never remove them from my ACNH Switch or Switch OLED...
Really nice design. I’ve been eyeing these Hiri controls for a while now. Might cave and buy the Arceus version along with the Switch case.
cool too bad Hori products are known to break easily
I would love these if they had motion controls.
Otherwise, no thanks.
Greatest accessory for the Switch and is even better than using the pro controller. I have the plain black and red one and will hope they do a Metroid version before buying another set.
The Hori Split Pad Pro is a great set of cons for those that prefer the D-pad style of handheld gaming and bigger, less drift prone joysticks. I’ve owned the red pair for over a year and so far it has not disappointed this Gen X retro player!
Basically a must have for anybody that doesn't have kid sized hands. After using the split pad pro since just a few months after launch a vanilla switch with joycons is cripplingly uncomfortable
