After having to delay its "must-watch" livestream earlier this month, PlatinumGames has now finally aired its "release date forum" - locking in a release date for its anticipated shmup, Sol Cresta.
Hideki Kamiya has confirmed it will land on the Switch eShop next month on 22nd February for €39.99 / $39.99 / 3,980 yen. In addition to this, the team shared the final artwork for the game, which you can see above.
This news follows on from the game experiencing a last-minute delay towards the end of 2021 - with Kamiya announcing back then a December 9th launch would no longer be possible, as the team needed more development time.
Will you be checking out Sol Cresta when it launches on Switch next month? Tell us below.

Watching the reveal announcement right now. Here's hoping for a physical release down the road!
Wonderful 101's sequel looks great!
for the right price, perhaps I will buy this
$40 is a bit... aggressive.
Saw the release date announced live. The super computer used to announce the date was interesting.
That price is quite frankly insane but it does look decent.
@nessisonett huh, 40 dollar price? Yeah that is pretty insane. And it is a shump
Love these guy’s, but that looks like a $15 game. $20 tops.
40buxx seems steep when you consider the powerhouse of other shooters on the switch that typically are $20.
What is it in CAD? $60? Maybe for Black Friday sale 2022 in that case..
If this game is like an hour long and doesn't have anything interesting to unlock it's gonna be hard for me to spend $40. Feb/March is when games releases start ramping up.
This absolutely looks like my jam
Quite possibly the game I am looking forward to the most, this year. Love the artwork. Hope we see a physical edition.
Oh man! It's coming out on my birthday!
It's on my "To Get" list but that asking price is too steep, honestly. Shmups just aren't a genre known for length, and one of my personal ways of setting the value for a game is hours played per dollar spent. I'll wait until it goes on sale...preferably at a 50% or higher discount.
no way this should cost $40.
prices for new shoot'em ups these days are so inflated, it's unbelievable.
Not complaining, but I wish it looked like a 2021 game. It would justify the $40.
LOL, this is a retro style bullet hell game, no one will pay this much for it. I won't even play it if it's free.
@AtlanteanMan But shmups are more than just games you complete. Unless it doesn't have a high score table lol.
Will 100% buy a physical, but €40 etc for a digital game is not gonna happen for me.
@JJtheTexan I'll buy the physical copy, hopefully they don't sell it through Kickstarter like the nightmare launch of Wonderful 101 Remastered
I can see myself having fun with this neo-classic shooter - I like the combining getter machine and formation action, trust Kamiya-san for a geeky fun story, and you can’t go wrong with music by Koshiro-san (has he done music for a shooting game before?) - but like others I’m only willing to pay $40 if it’s on a cartridge.
I’ll wait patiently for more details on this one.
@anoyonmus absolutely too expensive, it will drop to $14.99 after a few months then $9.99 after half year.
I sure hope there is a physical. Retail or limited release is fine by me.
I don't mind them charging a premium price, but I think they're going to find it hard to get traction at $40. Different genre, but Streets of Rage 4 was $25 at launch. In hindsight that was an absolute bargain.
I think the game looks rad personally, but I haven't bought a shmup in ages. I'll check reviews and likely wait for a discount too.
I'll wait until it's £5.
I don't understand how this kind of game took this long and costs this much coming from a developer who can rip out AAA masterpieces...
I have no issue with the price provided it's a top tier shmup. Cotton Rock n Roll costs the same, as do the M2 Shottriggers series. SHMUPS are a niche genre so sales for a brand new one will always be limited, hence the premium price.
I'm into this, but that price makes it a "wait for reviews" rather than an instabuy. There are shmups that are definitely worth $40 or more, but I have no evidence this is one of them.
Platinum, this is not a $40 game. You didn’t make the next Ikaruga, and that masterpiece is only $15.
@SepticLemon Hopefully it doesn’t leave you sour
Wow. This looks like an extremely creative contribution to the genre!!
@ArmoredGoomba
An hour long SHMUP is like an 800 hr long Super Mario game.
40 dollars for a new game is a bargain, ya whippersnappers.
now, sit on your old pa's knee while i tell you about 60.00 snes games.
...and you could only buy the ones they stocked on the shelves...
why, back in my day...
(this game looks fantastic. its made by veteran artists and masters of craft, not some start up hopeful indie just trying to get in the door. these people gotta get paid.
BUT, i never pay more than 15 bucks for a game lol so I'll be waiting for a sale 😆)
@robr Not if I play it once and then never again because it wasn't fun or interesting. If the game is quality and has replay value it will be worth it.
If not then I'll wait for a sale.
I'd pay that for a physical copy, no questions asked.
Digitally, needs a hefty discount for me unfortunately.
@BloodNinja Why would it make me sour?
Plus, when Ikaruga came out in Japan, I'm pretty sure it was at the typical new release game price, somewhere around the 4000-5000 yen mark.
Besides, this isn't a bullet hell, it's closer to something like Xevious, Star Force, Star Soldier, Xenon, 1941, Strikers 1945 and Truxton rather than the bullet spilling games you get now, and TBH, I want more shmups like this, I'm getting tired of bullet hells. To see the Cresta series brought back is great news, I still need to download Lunar Cresta and Terra Cresta on my Switch, even though I already have them on my PS4.
@aznable Covid 19. It's happened to a lot of development companies too. Not to mention that Japan didn't adapt to work at home very well compared to the rest of the world.
I'm very interested in this one since the first day I've heard about it. I love Moon/Terra Cresta games since the 80's and I always want more quality shmups, especially non bullet-hell ones. But now I'll be waiting for a sale, I guess. It's too much. For this price I could buy two of those Cave shooters I still don't have.
@BloodNinja I'm pretty sure I paid 50 Euro for Ikaruga back in 2003. I remember buying it from this German supermarket in the Netherlands, on the strength of the Treasure name as I didn't know anything about it. I actually regretted it at the time as I couldn't get into it. It wasn't till years later I recognised its greatness.
It's always ridiculous people throwing around their subjective ideas for game value, as if there was a universal scale to calculate a game's correct price based on length, genre, visual fidelity, production values, etc. It's all arbitrary, and the same nonsense was thrown around with Metroid Dread. If you like the game and want to support the creator, buy the game. Otherwise vote no with your wallet, and I'm sure they'll listen and prices will adjust on all shmups next year. All this gnashing over the supposed correct price of the game is so preciously futile.
@OorWullie Understandable!
@SepticLemon Because your name is Lemon
@BloodNinja lol!
Now I feel stupid for not noticing the joke!
@SepticLemon <3
Oh yeah I always wanted my favorite action game developers to make a game which is 2 thirds of borders.
@Coalescence Thank you for saying it that! I went through the comments and most everyone was complaining about the price. I'd love to know how everyone got their hands on an early copy and can tell me the extent of the content of the game.
@sirmrguitardude ...because it's a vertical shooter where they turn the monitor to the side? A lot of arcade shmups do this, not to mention that they've already shown off the tate (vertical) mode in the game.

For $40 it needs to have a decent training mode and unlocks/achievements.
@SepticLemon
Ooo tate mode while docked - I love that feature! Thank you for verifying that for me.
Now I just need the all-important (for me) physical release, and I’m sold 😁
Umm $40 is pretty steep. About $15-$20 would be about right. Looks very good, but I'll wait to see if there's a physical release.
Vapourware for $40? Jeez.
@JJtheTexan Meh to physical copies. Been there and done that in the 90s. I don't have the space for large game libraries anymore. In addition some of my older games have degraded to becoming unplayable.
To everyone commenting on the price, 4000 yen is nearer to 25 euros than 30 so it definately seems... off?
This should be the greatest thing on the planet, but it just doesn't look like it is. I absolutely want to be wrong, but the price is also a little expectant.
@Gwynbleidd
"A story driven game for 40$? We have to thank those who'd buy anything at any price."
Do you see what you sound like? Every have it's market share and YOU ARE NOT this one as i am not the market share for games with a 5 hours story without replayability. Some people can have fun, and will have fun, with titles like shmups. And Sol Cresta definitely looks a top tier shmup. You don't like the asking price? Okay, don't buy it. But don't go on a "i am superior being because my taste is better than those who pay his asking price for this game". You know what? I really hope they never drop the price for this game. Then none of the likes of you will ever play it and taste the great fun games like this can give you
Yeah, 40$ is pricey. But i prefer 40$ in a very polished niche game than 70$ in a somewhat lenghty but not so polished but highly marketable game.
let me kon if it gets below 5. No way this game worth 40.
@ArmoredGoomba If it’s an hour long, that’s really long for a shmup. That said, I agree, should be closer to 20 dollars. I’m sure we can get it on sale before too long though. Also, a note on length… shmups really are about completing once and moving on like maybe other action/story games. More about trying to 1 CC or high score chasing. I’d like to get a little more into the scene, but personally I do like shmups that make you start at the beginning of a level with a certain amount of lives and maybe continues… rather than just letting you add credits and blast through the game. Feels more rewarding to beat when the game doesn’t let you cheat… otherwise you’re sorta forced into making your own rules, and I like beating the games rules better… rant finished. (I’m happy to clarify, just typing in a hurry.)
@GrailUK Even more than Pocky & Rocky Reshrined? Both look great! 😊
@BlubberWhale Fair point, Blubs. Looking forward to that too! 2022 is going to be awesome (as soon as everyone gets their first pay check after Christmas lol.)
@SepticLemon I'm aware of the genre, It's just that I bought a new double pack of bayonetta 1 and 2 for Wii U on launch day for$60 AUD and that's what this game will cost in AUD. I actually like retro shooters but skip them due to borders, newer games without the borders are so much better for me.
@GrailUK Heck yes it is! 😃 Yeah!
(Even if Kirby is the only somewhat interesting first party title for the year, which I doubt.)
Looks cool sounds nice, but not worth $40 imo. Maybe $15 max
I feel like there are too many superior or comparable games on the Switch for $5-$15 (and a few on NSO for no added cost) for me to want to ever spend $40 on this.
