Good news, everybody! Sometimes complaining about things is good. (Sometimes, we said. Most of the time it's just stressful and/or annoying.)
But folks who've been complaining about the size of one particular text box in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic have succeeded in their mission to make it, perhaps, a less-big text box. Hooray!
Need context? We don't blame you. KOTOR's recent re-release on the Nintendo Switch was a thrilling time, but players quickly noted that there was a massive text box on-screen whenever you are engaged in battle:
"The combat text box is intended behaviour," said developer Aspyr on Discord, "but we are always happy to hear player feedback!" And player feedback did they receive, as people flocked to the r/KOTOR subreddit to ask for, at the very least, an option to make it smaller.
Aspyr finally confirmed today that the Big Box would be patched in "the next few weeks", in an upcoming update that's currently in review. We don't know if that means it'll be still there, but smaller, or if we can turn it off completely, but at least it will change in some way rather than blocking almost a third of the screen in handheld mode. We love a happy ending.
Can you do a better pun than that tagline? Go on then. Prove it in the comments.

BUT HOW WILL I KNOW IF COMBAT MODE IS ENGAGED
Sweet only took 2 months to change the size of a text box. Aspyr's commitment to support is staggering. 🤪
Thank all that is holy in heaven! I loved the performance and despised the stupid box. Took me right out of immersion every time I went into combat. Now how's about fixing the missing mid-combat quips!?
I was having a great time with this until I hit this certain section and now I can't progress. I have to put on a guards outfit and go through a door to enter a new part of the city but when I do, I'm immediately set upon by 3 gang members and have zero chance of escaping. From reading a guide, what happens to me is not supposed to happen. I'm supposed to be met with a cut scene.
It's fairly early on but still far enough into the game that I really don't want to start over, especially if I encounter the same problem again. Annoying.
I'm wondering if this patch will be included in the Limited Run Games physical version 🤔

@Gwynbleidd this is the second time we've mentioned it ever, I think
Well I, for one, am happy they are addressing that fan-dumped menace
Sounds more like a Fontom Menace…
I’ve been really enjoying the game, hopefully this patch will fix a few of other things too.
My joycons don't seem to have a disengage button. Just the standard ABXY stuff...
A "fix" on par with eShop game icons, so it better be their own post factum decision rather than giving in to yet another piece of substance we fans insist on calling "criticisms" and "feedback".
Sometimes complaining about things is good. (Sometimes, we said. Most of the time it's just stressful and/or annoying.)
@KateGray Complaining is mostly stressful? Didn't you used to write for the Guardian and Kotaku? 🤣
I thought I knew what a dry sense of humour was until I met certain Australians and English folk. I also seem to remember a catty remark in a recent article by a certain staff writer about a key piece of furniture being too macho, or something. Personally, neither "macho" nor "girly" work for me, and I don't like to attack either human sex, but I'm just a furball. What do I know? As for puns... you're allowed to discuss "bums" and "pants" in yours, so it's not a fair competition, Kate.
Beat the game last week with this "feature". I thought it would be more annoying based on the screenshots and comments I've seen, but it was fine. Other than the game crashing pretty often (mitigated by save anywhere), it is a really solid port and I enjoyed my time with it. Looking forward to the sequel one day!
Things that should have been fixed before release.
@Gwynbleidd i believe this is the second time you have complained about them complaining
/s
But can we just stop fr tho
@NCRunner like on both sides
Figures this comes along a couple weeks after I finish the game... it wasn't a huge deal, but it was something that got a bit distracting in battles. Good to hear they're finally fixing it at least, hopefully it'll be included on LRG's physical release.
@Gwynbleidd lmao
Every time a writer tries to engage, people start arguing.
As a graphic designer, I give that subtitle a 10/10
I'm glad. It's not a huge deal, but it was kind of annoying if I'm being honest.
I wasn't entirely confident they would bother listening to the feedback. But, they did. That's awesome.
I made might get it. But to be honest the remake would be much better
@CharlieGirl Yeah, it would apply to all versions and regions, whether physical or digital. It's all the same game after all.
Been playing this a lot alongside my original 2003 Xbox copy on the XSX (light-side run on Xbox, dark-side run on Switch) and the combat text box has never been a particular issue for me. Honestly the biggest issue I have had outside of glitches from the original like warping to the sewers in the undercity when I haven't even left the camp yet and loading a save that plays the intro cutscene again, is the fact that the sound design is awful. The crowd sounds drop out during the arena duels on Taris leaving you with an awkward silent fight most of the time and as stated before by @Krysus the mid-battle quips and "what?" "I'm here" "Hmm?" as you switch characters is completely missing, not to mention the flavor dialogue of "Got it. It's open" and "Too easy" from unlocking doors and lockers.
Fix that. Please.
@OorWullie Are you talking about where you have to put on the Sith armor to get to the lower city on Taris? Yeah a cutscene should happen of the two rival gangs fighting, but after that you would still have to fight the three gang members. You should be able to fight them even with the sith armor on.
I’ve been looking forward to playing this game for a while but the text box looked horrendous so I decided to wait until they patched it. My backlog is choc full of AAA titles and I don’t see the purpose in playing games where there are easy and obvious improvements to make - and that one really seemed to be an immersion killer.
@OorWullie I’ve never played the game before so this advice could be rubbish, but I have hit similar issues in games before where I’ve glitches into areas where I was not the right level and kept being killed. I find that sometimes scaling the difficulty level down in those moments is an approach that can get you out of a jam
Attack of the comic-sans
@CANOEberry I'm not sure what my past employers have to do with complaining, because I mostly just wrote about things I liked.
And yes, gamer accessories named after guns and military concepts is what I would consider "macho" — and that's not an insult to men, it's an insult to a specific kind of bro-ey masculinity that's pervasive in video games. The fact that you consider that "catty" is pretty insulting to me, though.
@SSGodLink Oh yes, their support is the best isn't it?

@Gwynbleidd I'm no math whiz, but if this is indeed the second time they mentioned it...you're a little off base. You clearly entered this article with the already held belief that this point had been brought up too much here, hurting the game. Yet, prior to this article, Nintendo Life wasn't really hammering some detrimental narrative. It didn't even come up in their review. They just reported on two statements FROM ASPYR regarding the matter.
@KateGray For the record, I didn't mean to rile you or insult you with the word "catty", although I plainly did, which I regret. For that I will apologize.
As for your past gigs, I don't blame any writers for getting work where they can, and I'm not saying any of you set policy for those publications. I would be remiss if I didn't point out that those other outlets have a certain "protest" (I'd even say "outrage") orientation. The writers on NL itself aren't shy about making complaints, which I don't think are bad, abnormal, or anything other than part of the universal experience of being a fan. I was and remain baffled by that remark.
On the whole, I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you here.
To be honest I didn't even notice the large text box until it was in an article. Then it became the worst thing that has ever happened to me.
Thank goodness!
