Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone recently said that he wasn't sure if there would be any more Stardew Valley updates, saying that he was working on the "next game" — which we now know to be Haunted Chocolatier. Here's what he said during a Twitch stream for the Stardew Valley championships:
"There’s isn’t currently a Stardew Valley 2; after 1.5, I’ll decide what the next step for Stardew Valley is. But I would say there will probably be another step for Stardew Valley."
Stardew Valley 1.5 was a massive update released almost a year ago, on the 21st December 2020, adding local co-op, new characters, new items, new secrets, and new music. Since then, 1.5 has been receiving patches and updates, and the latest — 1.5.5 — was released on Tuesday, 30th November.
Most of the patch notes concern bug fixes and additional features to make the game easier to mod, as well as a few "Quality of life" changes:
- Holding the CTRL key in addition to shift now lets you purchase/craft stacks of 25 items at a time.
- When starting a new save, many settings now default to what they were the last time you played the game. Some settings like zoom level, gamepad mode, and multiplayer server privacy aren't copied over.
- You can now build or move farm buildings onto artifact spots. This destroys the artifact spots.
- You can now nudge pets out of the way while building/moving a building by clicking on them.
- You can now buy back items accidentally sold in the same shopping session.
- The in-game time is now shown on the upper-right hand corner of the screen when playing Journey of the Prairie King in multiplayer.
- Grass placed using Grass Starter during Winter no longer disappears when the game is reloaded (but it still won't grow or spread).
But in a small note at the end, ConcernedApe hinted at what 1.5.6 might contain:
"There may be some new content in 1.5.6, too, but it's not going to be anything huge like 1.5."
So, don't go expecting a cavalcade of exciting new features, but do keep your eyes peeled. Maybe we'll get geese. Our farm isn't nearly honk-y enough.

Once again, making every other game developer look lazy.
What an amazing investment this game has been.
I'm hoping we'll see the mobile version of 1.5 come out before 2022
I for one need to get back to this game.
This game has consistently getting free updates and meanwhile smash just released its final patch...
I sunk a good 60 hrs in to this at the start of COVID. Then work started kicking my ass when a bunch of staff left/shielded and I had to drop it, haven't played it much. I'd probably have to start a new game to get back in to it, forgotten most of the systems. Incredibly immersive game, all things considered.
Game already has tons of content as it is, I don't feel short changed in the slightest, I won't turn down a little more though.
One of the most delightful games I've ever played. Every bit of its success is well-deserved.
Terraria crossover confirmed? :0
I wish I paid more for this game.
I so need to get back to this game.
