Nintendo's Switch OLED Dock Can Now Be Purchased Separately

At first I thought it was kind of strange that you have to buy the back cover separately...

@CactusMan You can also just get a USB ethernet adapter for like $10-$15 and use that instead. It's what I've been doing for a few years with mine (still using my day one model), it works perfectly fine and it's way cheaper than buying the OLED dock just for the ethernet port. Of course, it is a nice bonus for anyone looking to get a second dock.

that price WITH a power adapter and cable....and then maybe. I kind of want a dock for a different room, but yeeesh. Not that much.

@Kilamanjaro Just the screen? What are you going to do with just a screen? It won't fit in an original Switch (since it's larger)

I'm sure that you could always buy the oled docks separately in the UK?

Loads of brand new white OLED docks on eBay being sold for around £75 as so many people play exclusively handheld ( myself included )

@HamatoYoshi Yeah, my Switch OLED didn't even come with a dock but I didn't mind because I only do handheld anyways.

I ordered my separate white dock from Nintendo UK all the way back when the OLED system launched in October.
Admittedly it only arrived last week, but yeah, it's been available (for UK people at least) for quite a while now.

The dock itself is very nice! Build quality much better than the original and feels more premium. Looks good next to my PS5. Just need the white joycons.

The new dock looks so awesome in white, would be buying one for my Switch, if I did not already own the OLED version.

Not sure what you would do with an OLED Switch screen on it's own, it won't fit in the original Switch models, just curious that's all.

They should sell the oled also seperate.

Thought he was talking about a replacement screen, but pretty sure the main console part is the most expensive bit, but I guess an option would be nice.

I love the White dock, it looks great next to my PS5! Unfortunately I don't use it because I mostly play handheld. Sometimes I play on my monitor, but i only have to use a USB C cable for it, so the dock still isn't needed.
But it's there if myself or a friend/family member needs or wants to use it, that plus the 2 other ACNH docks I own...

I’m kind of annoyed that when I leave my dock with its network cable plugged in, the switch is always warm. How is this still a problem 5 years later?

@Friendly not yet from Nintendo. Some custom joy con places like game trader zero have custom white controllers.

I honestly don’t even use the dock. I just have the cable for charging unplugged. Whenever friends come over we just use my old wii u and laugh about smash 4.

The OLED Switch can be used with the standard dock, correct? Kind of partial to my Smash Bros. and Dragon Quest docks.

@johnvboy I would slap my joycons on that bad boy and play on my couch. The model loses it's OLED benefit the moment it's docked anyway, if that makes sense

@sanderev same comment, would play it on my couch with my existing joycons and benefit from the OLED screen. Docked it doesn't provide any enhancement to m existing Switch.

i came here to complain that it only comes in white, but there's a black option! nice.

so, ill instead complain that the only reason id get this is to have a dock set up in another room, but it doesn't come with a power supply or hdmi cable so i still wont be doing that, haha. oh well.

it really, REALLY seems like having multiple docks set up in a home would be officially part of the appeal of switch but Nintendo seems to be actively against the idea.

Was interested as could set one up at my parents’ during visits. But the adaptor and HDMI is not included so price is likely to reach near £100. I don’t think so.

Does the dock work with the normal switch too?

I grabbed one for my TV as my Switch is currently connected to a PC Monitor where it looks much better since the games are lower resolution. However, I do enjoy playing on the TV sometimes, Mario Kart and BOTW mostly, so this is nice we can get a second dock. It is a great feature of the Switch that I hope Nintendo carries forward on future consoles.

The whole point of buying a whole other dock is so that you can play it on another HDMI device. Without HDMI or Thunderbolt, how in the world does it ever make sense to actually buy this? Should've gone with one whole set at a higher price.

But, I suppose part of the cost comes from this dock being somewhat 4k-ready and not, plus having software updates

@Burning_Spear Yes, the Switch OLED can be used with the older docks and the original Switch can be used with the new docks. The new dock is a bit wider, so if you dock a Switch with a Hori Split Pad Pro attached, it will be kind of a tight fit. That's about the only difference I have noticed...

$70 for the OLED dock is much better than $90-100 for the OG Switch dock, which didn't even have ethernet (although, those came with power supply too, right?). Either way, I have an extra power supply and a whole box of HDMI cables.

I may buy a black one, for downstairs tv.

Beyond what's mentioned in the article, are there any other benefits to having switch 1.0/non-OLED and pairing it with the OLED dock? I had been wanting a second dock for a few months and luckily saw that the Nintendo site had restocked them over the weekend but I don't think the OLED was available at that time (Saturday morning I believe) or if it was I didn't see it. I ended up grabbing a refurb dock and ac adaptor but maybe I should have grabbed one of these?

If I wasn't already swimming in USB ethernets, i'd consider this.
Its good for the average person but for the people who actually have been with nintendo every generation, we're used to having to get a USB ethernet for nearly a decade and even a little more than that.

Does it say anywhere what type of port the Ethernet port is? I'd guess 100 but knowing Nintendo they could have cheeped out and gone w/ 10. Gigabit would probably be overkill but would help future proof it for Switch 2 if it fits in the same dock. How they can sell a dock w/ an ethernet port in it for $70 and can't even be bothered to say "Fast" (that's 100 FYI) is just wrong.

Thanks for the heads up. Been watching and waiting to get my hands on the OLED Dock. It'll be nice to actually have 2 docks set up in my house. ^^

@sanderev I upgraded and the OLED definitely fits into the OG dock.

@akamu Ofcourse a screen would fit in the dock. The entire Switch OLED fits in the original dock. But the Switch OLED screen doesn't fit in the original Switch.

@sanderev I think you misunderstood the original comment. OP wanted the OLED screen with no joycon since they presumably already own some. I thought you were saying the OLED won't fit in the old dock.

@JaxonH agree i was lucky i got an original dock on lcearance half price. even then It was over priced. but its nice to have two docks. but at the retail price its a con

@akamu No you misunderstood my reply. A Switch, even without Joy-Con is more than just a "screen". It's actually more like a tablet. Becaus it also has a battery, a motherboard, an SD card reader, a Switch card reader, 2 speakers and a kickstand.

@sanderev lol I don't even know what you're talking about anymore. Handheld it's OLED & works with existing joycons. Docked offers zero benefit to the OLED screen the system comes with. I own an existing Switch, don't need another dock and don't need more joycons, hope that makes sense

However, to that note you could do it the way I did. I sold my "old" Switch and with the money I got from that I bought the Switch OLED with a big discount. (I paid €150 for the Switch OLED)

@sanderev lol that's the way I said it the first time but at least we resolved it! I'll keep the launch model I have because it can still be modded in the future unlike newer models, so I'm sure it will have more value overtime

Got my new Dock. Looks nicer and having the built in Ethernet port is nice. To confirm, the built in Ethernet port does run at gigabyte speeds. My Switch is finally hitting the download/upload that I pay for. : P
