The latest tale in Circle Entertainment's Mercenaries Saga is about to arrive on Switch in the west, with the publisher confirming an 11th November release date for Europe and North America.
Mercenaries Rebirth: Call Of The Wild Lynx, which launched in Japan last month, is a tactical RPG set in a fantasy world. The tactical battles you'll be taking part in are set on "quarter-view" maps which feature different height levels; you'll need to take note of your surroundings and position your party correctly to win each fight.
Here's a closer look at what to expect:
・Smooth Character Animations: Animations play a more active role now. During battles, smooth animations were made by animating parts of the characters’ pixel art. Both human characters and monsters move a lot more vividly than ever compared to previous titles in the series!
・Battle Maps Transformed Into 3D: 3D models produce battle maps, and the camera angles can rotate during the Player’s Turn. Hidden items, etc., can be found by rotating the camera !?
・Full Options Setting: Options settings include turning the Grid Display ON/OFF on the 3D Battle Maps, “Skill Easy Play,” and “Faster Movement Play,” etc., which are more suitable for repeat play value.
The last game in the series we reviewed was 2020's Mercenaries Blaze: Dawn of the Twin Dragons, which we described as a rather 'by the numbers' RPG, for better or worse. Here's hoping for just a little more pizazz this time around.
Will you be checking out Mercenaries Rebirth when it launches later this week? You'll be able to grab it from the eShop for $19.99 / €17.99.

I've yet to try any of these games, but I hear the stories are a bit lacklustre. Is that true? And what game should you start playing? I think there's a bundle featuring the first 3 entries of the series. I love Fire Emblem and FF Tactics, so this looks like a game for me, but I'm just not really sure.
I tried the trilogy and it’s well worth checking out . If you like final fantasy tactics there’s much to like but the thing about the trilogy is that once you had played one of the games the other 2 just felt like the same game. Not played the more recent ones so unsure how they compare
@Pillowpants If you want a tactics game without the fluff and meandering exposition, Mercenaries is actually not bad. especially for a budget price. it's almost like a pickup and play SRPG.
@CharlieGirl thank you for the reply. I'll just put them on my wishlist then and will pick them up at some point or another
If I am not mistaken, none of these games take place in the same world, so to speak. If that is the case, it would be a downright shame, as I love storylines that cross over from one game to the next. If I AM mistaken, and these games are all part of the same world, then I might finally get the first collection and go from there. I actually quite like rather generic RPGs.
Yeah they are very Final Fantasy Tactics lite. They scratch an itch but always leave me feeling a bit meh. Will defo give the new one a go if it's an improvement (and it's cheap).
I played one entry in the series and it seemed enjoyable enough. Nothing amazing, but no real problems or flaws with the story or gameplay. Very safe, inoffensive tactics gameplay that can fill your time between bigger games.
I wouldn't pay more than $10-15 for it.
If the attacks were flashier I'd be all over it.
Wow, this has isometric pixel art AND actually uses character portraits for story cutscenes! Triangle Strategy doesn't have that!
...Anyway that was my initial thought, until I saw the sprites move and got big flash game vibes. Pixel art really needs to be animated with traditional frames, not smoothly tilted and puppeted like this.
This might be the first one I buy. I’ve wanted to dive in even on 3DS but always heard the times outside battle are a bit mediocre. That’s fine with me in itself because for me 9 times out of 10 the story doesn’t even click for me in games. But I’ve been aching so bad for a Stella Glow-like game now and this definitely seems to be a contender. They had to have perfected the formula by how right??
A good tactical series but this feels like more of the same as the ones before. I may check it out once I finished through Disgaea 6.
@Daniel36 The three Mercenaries Saga games take place in the same world, iirc. I don't remember characters crossing over between games, but I remember characters mentioning events/groups from the previous game/s.
They aren't so bad. They're never going to blow bigger-budget tactical RPGs out of the water, but they're relatively inexpensive and easy to pick up and play. Some of them have different endings and there's more difficulties and super-weapons/armor to unlock on subsequent playthroughs, so that's always a good time.
Looks pretty much like more of Mercenaries Blaze. Not more, not less. Which seems ok for me. I liked Blaze so I will most likely like this one.
Fire Emblem for me is more of a kindergarten simulator then a tactics game. Day 1 with Season Pass and didn't play it more then 5 hours.
Mercenaries is pretty much very basic but I like it much more.
I'm waiting for a good price and then dive in.
I can’t beat these fast enough to keep up with them.
Just bought this game, and if you're a fan of FF Tactics, or Fire Emblem, I'm sure you'll appreciate this game. It's the best so far in the franchise for sure. Storyline is okay I suppose, but that's what I've come to expect for the series. If you need an idea on how this game plays, I'd say get one of the older titles and play one of them, basically it's the same gameplay copy and pasted for each one, with minor tweaks and changes.
I stumbled upon Dawn of the Twin Dragons by accident and actually quite enjoyed it. It's the closest we get to Final Fantasy Tactics right now (at least till Triangle Strategy) and they are actually quite good. If you're a fan of FF:T or the old school Fire Emblems, don't sleep on this hidden gem.
