The Switch eShop has a decent range of sports games, including varied options for NFL / American Football enthusiasts. Another that is targeting a release in Q1 2022 is Retro Bowl from New Star Games, which will be looking to continue the outstanding momentum it's achieved on mobile for both iOS and Android platforms.
At the time of writing it's the number one free-to-play game on iOS in the US, for example, achieving viral success with young players and on TikTok in particular. It takes inspiration from Tecmo Bowl and mixes in a surprising amount of management depth alongside matches; you both try to build up your franchise as a GM / coach and play the games.

Retro Bowl is the perfect game for the armchair quarterback to finally prove a point. Presented in a glorious retro style, the game has simple roster management, including hiring, firing and training players, press duties and the handling of fragile egos, while on the field you get to call the shots and take direct control over the players in key attacking moments in the game. The player takes over a team and has the ultimate aim of winning the "Retro Bowl" and the satisfaction of shaping a world beating team.
New Star Games has confirmed that it'll be a 'premium' title on Switch and feels that Nintendo's system will be an ideal platform. Simon Read, the game's creator and owner of the studio, has shared the following comments with us.
We are very excited to see a Switch version of Retro Bowl. The NES was of course home of the legendary Tecmo Bowl, from which Retro Bowl was inspired, so the Switch would be the perfect platform for our game to make its console debut.
Of course if you want to see what the game is all about in the meantime you can give it a whirl on mobile, or you can try out the official browser version on Poki.
Let us know what you think of Retro Bowl in the comments; do you think it'll be a good fit for Switch?

I LOVE RETRO BOWL! I play it every few days, really excited to see this!^^
I got Retro Bowl on my phone, good fun!
Hoping they add defensive plays before this release.
at this point I’ll welcome any NFL/Football I can get for the Switch (I really wish EA would bring Madden back to Nintendo systems)
Finally, the Switch gets its own Madden😂😂😂
I just tried it and I'm not into the auto-defense thing. Everything else is really cool though.
glad the oldies get a comeback now and then.. great gameplay never dies
looks okay. some of the team management stuff looks like superfluous fluff, and I hope it's optional.
Not a huge sports fan…but I do enjoy a game of Mutant League Football every now and then. Maybe I’ll try this.
I've run a Tecmo Super Bowl tournament with my friends every year since 2002. This has almost nothing to do with the article; I just wanted to brag about that. ^_^
@Chocobo_Shepherd Worth bragging about!
This game is crap tried to play it on my phone and the touch controls just make the game horrible to play. Passing is a complete joke. Instead of bringing this junk to Switch just bringing the current ROM hack of Tecmo Bowl where it has the current roster and such.
American football? World football? Football is football.
All I wanted was for EA to release the NHL 94 add on which came in the current gen consoles last year. Being a sports fan on switch really isn’t great.
Cool, but I'd really love a current gen NFL/College football game on the Switch. It's a complete farce that EA still won't put Madden on the console even though it's closing in on 100 million units sold.
One of the best sports games ever created, after countless hours of gameplay on my iPad I’m still excited to replay it on Switch!
For someone who hates gaming on my phone, I somehow managed to play this for a few months non-stop. Definitely picking this up for Switch.
I love New Star - I'll definitely give this a try (I've looked at it on mobile - but w/o a controller I lose interest quickly).
Football Heroes Turbo is a great Arcade-y Football game if you're looking for one on Switch. I've put many an hour into it.
@idork99
Yeah they could even give us a retro one with updated rosters (like Madden '97 style or something). Especially seeing how popular this game here is.
I hardly plan games on my phone, line rarely ever BUT this game I do play. It’s simple but a lot of fun. Offers enough challenge & customization to keep you coming back. Definitely a great little retro-style football game. I’ll get this on Switch for sure.
Looks cool, I didn't know about this game. I would have loved a madden game on switch, but this might just scratch that itch. Will be checking reviews.
It appears to have the actual NFL License and not the “back door” create a team that Tecmo Bowl Kickoff had.
This + 2020 super baseball on switch just need a NHL game.
Price will be a factor but I’m intrigued regardless!
NASCAR and Now this….. also had a boxing game with The Rocky one… lovely a few library holes being filled
@PokemonDMG agreed I’d rather have a fully fledged NFL game or NCAA even CFL to go with it but NHL 100% needed and as much as the Rocky game scratched an itch for boxing but a licensed one would be nice too.
Hilarious this is how Switch gets American Football game
@JGruns football is soccer to everyone in the world. Americans call football, soccer. The rest of the world calls our version of football, American football.
Oh, well I'm sure football fans will have fun.
@ecco6t9 it doesn’t have the license - team names are just cities and can be edited to say whatever you want. Same with the uniforms and color schemes. The rosters are all random generated names. It works really well though
@braincandy101 have you tried Football Heroes Turbo? Theres some crazy rubberband AI cheapness going on there but its a fun game
this is the nintendo's answer to madden lol
Sometimes retro is just as good. Just wished they did a Physical cart for it.
The Switch eShop actually has a lame range of sports games. Let's hope this one much improves it!
@Nintendo4Sonic Shame that it's the original one though.
Does anyone know if you can customize this and make current rosters and teams and such? I’m assuming this is all made up teams but idk
@badmotorfinger74 Came here to say the same thing. I HATE mobile games...aside from this game
Looks fun. Would rather have Madden (or something like it not made by EA, if such a thing exists) though. Mutant League has been my only football experience on Switch.
