Earlier this year during the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary live stream, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest X Offline - an "offline" version of the MMO Dragon Quest X for Nintendo Switch.
At this year's Tokyo Game Show, the company has now locked in some platforms and a release date - revealing the title will launch in Japan next year on 26th February for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4 & 5.

Unfortunately, there's still no word about a possible localisation, but if we hear anything - we'll let you know. Would you be interested in playing an offline version of Dragon Quest X on your Nintendo Switch? Drop a comment down below.

Oooo gimme gimme gimme!
If only Final Fantasy XI also got same treatment as DQ X Offline...
I'm sure the SquareEnix team can make FF XI Offline with some changes, at least keep the graphic like FF XII style.
Offline MMO? That is interesting. This might interest me to play Dragon Quest.
I know a lot of gamers prefer single player RPG's, but I still am so desperate for Dragon Quest X proper or even Final Fantasy XI to be released on Switch in the West!
My other dream is FFXII being made into a proper MMO. Same old-school assets, but with redesigned maps to be larger and seamless (mostly). Its clan system is perfect for an MMO. Even the combat system would fit perfectly as is. You could even take NPC party members into multiplayer similarly to Dragalia Lost raids.
Looks like a game made for the DS
This HAS to be localised for the West. Please! And once you've done that, give us an offline version of Final Fantasy XI as well.
Needs a western release
Also Square need to do this with FFXI too
And yet Dragon Quest heroes 1&2 for the west has not come to Switch even though a localisation has been done for the game. It's obvious Square-Enix hates westerners.
If no localization will be provided, it's a safe bet to say the release will have English support.
I’ll wait a year after release. After that I’m buying it no matter what.
There is one dragonquest i really want on the switch. Dragon quest Joker (sequel) that game was ap addictive. I love some monster catching rpg.
I bet they won’t localise as they don’t want X to come to the west.
@Zuljaras Dragon Quest XI is a fine enough starting point. It's the second game I played in the series after Dragon Warrior I on GBC (best version, if you're not against emulating it), but as far as the main story is concerned, you don't need to know anything from previous titles in order to enjoy that game. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition does have missions tied to all 10 previous numbered entries in the series, but they are all optional, and will only affect the post game. If you need to get a feel for the game, I would highly encourage playing the demo, as it is pretty dang long for a demo from what I've heard.
@SwitchplayerJohn
I have Dragon Quest Heroes 1 Asia English version on PS4, bought used condition with very cheap price. (and still haven't finished yet)
That was the only option to get English version.
I'd be surprised and annoyed if it wasn't localised given how well XI did. As well as it's critical acclaim. I really want it myself.
@Ulysses You're actually kinda describing FFXIV Online, which pretty much exactly uses FFXII's battle system. If they ever did an expansion that brought you to Ivalice (and why not, dimension-hopping is obviously a thing since there are Rathaloses and Palicoes from Monster Hunter in the game) it would basically be exactly that haha
I hope they translate this into English, as it's considered an awesome game by those who played it back on the Wii.
An internet connection will no longer be required to play.
This is the best news...and if EN text that's even better...
It's the DQ game I'm interested the least XD, but I'd still play it, if it ever comes to the West.
Anyway, where's that DQ3 remake???
The graphics look a bit like a mobile game, but I'm always happy about a new Dragon Quest.
I hope they bring it over here. I really doubt we'll ever see the online version.
I would definitely buy this, fingers crossed we get it in the west.
Well thats just sad
@liam_doolan doesn’t the trailer say the 26th of Feb, not the 22nd?
So Squeenix is releasing DQ X Offline. Hooray! But so far it’s only been announced as available for the people who could already play DQ X Online? WTF?
Playing an MMO without interacting with other people. They found a way to remove the worst part of an MMO! Now give us ff14 offline!
It could have been done years ago and it would have arrived to the West like all previous main entries, though.
How many versions of this oldass game does the Japanese had already that it kept not coming to the rest of the world? C'mon Square Enix all we ask is just one version of this game, doesn't matter if it's offline just localize it already. You're throwing away good money here.
Looks good, but I still got so many JRPGs in my backlog and I still need to buy DQ XI first.
hope they gave us more info on dragon quest 12.
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.
This is turning into an absurd joke. That game's been a thing for years. Literal years. And there have been more than a few versions of it already. But not a single one has been localised.
Not. A. Single. One.
I really hope this gets released in the west! The 90’s belonged to FF, but since the 2000’s Dragon Quest has been the top!
I foresee no western localization. I want to be wrong.
I also predict DQXII to be PS5 exclusive. Would also love to be wrong.
@Nameless_Shame I doubt it would exclusive to PS5. Switch's audience is too huge to dismiss. Especially seeing the other games are already on Switch.
Might be, depends,
@WhoaManWtF 3DS maybe, but no way this would ever run on a DS.
Surely one of the main reasons this version exists would be to release it globally? I get not wanting to fully localise and support the MMO version, DQ isn’t a juggernaut outside of Japan and it’d be a costly mistake if it ended up flopping but this wouldn’t carry anywhere near the same expense and at least gets DQX into Western fans hands in some form. Be baffling if this version ends up locked to Japan as well.
As for this version itself though…it’s better than nothing at all I guess. Really just not a fan of that chibi style in anything, not sure why they didn’t make it look closer to the original version.
can all the publishers pls stop releasing games until i've finished my backlog kthx
Not having played this at all, how well does it work as an offline single player game?
I've played quite a few MMO's and they were built for parties and well...massive amounts of people. They'd be empty, barren and boring without the other people. Does DQX already have a solid single player campaign?
@Nameless_Shame That would be a good guess but remember a main Dragon Quest game always comes to the platform that sell better in Japan. Leaving the game away from the Switch means Square Enix would be losing a big chunk of their Dragon Quest audience as Japan mostly play the series in their best selling platform and right now Switch is leading the chart in Japan. The Dragon Quest series was never about powers either so even if the Switch is less powerful, as long as the audience is there the game will come.
Don't think these will be released outside of Japan. The series goes back to the Wii and maybe WiiU but never made it out of Japan so I'm not expecting this to but I'd love to be proven wrong.
This is brilliant! This the perfect example that every big game company with MMO and other games that cannot be played without online connection (SEGA, Capcom, Nintendo, Konami, etc.) needs to be learning from. Hopefully they are working on an offline HD remaster of Final Fantasy XI cause we definitely need that one too, please.
Would be cool if there was local multiplayer still.
It’s the game we got instead of the remake of IX.
To everyone saying that it look rather mediocre visual wise, remember that this was first a Wii and 3DS game that got ported to a lot of other systems
For those mentioning FF11, they had been working on a mobile version for years, and I believe that that version was supposed to be offline (although I'm not entirely sure), but it eventually got canned because the project wasn't living up to expectations, so it probably isn't going to be happening soon. They have said that an offline version is still a possibility, though, seen here. https://www.destructoid.com/square-enix-addresses-possibility-of-offline-version-of-final-fantasy-xi/
Um, wow. I was hyped by the headline, but I can't really handle that chibi art style.
So how much actual storyline will this have? I'd definitely be excited if this comes to the west if it has a full-fledged story with interesting characters.
Aren't we getting close to 10 years since the original versions released? I think it's about time we get at least one of the re-releases
This is the only mainline game we haven’t had in the West and this offline version is perfect for us, if it doesn’t come over here I’m gonna rage
@Ulysses Final Fantasy 11 did come out in the west for PS2. I bought a Network adapter to play it but my PS2 died before it released and I had migrated to the GameCube. Were there expansions that we missed?
Less worried about localization and more hoping that a remake of IX is inbound. X (what little bit of it I played years ago) felt like an extension of IX which I feel is why they chose this artstyle.
I never understood these regional releases. Surely DQ is big enough to come west, no?
I wanted this game for so long localized online , but clearly I’ll never get it:( Like old Xbox mmo I wanted as well ……….
@Rafie @Specter_of-the_OLED I 100% hope you’re both right, and while mainline DQs do always go to the most profitable current gen machine, something just rubs me the wrong way about XII’s initial teaser; like it’s going to change up the format so much in a still unspecified way just screams “graphical fidelity” to me. I’ve got a lot of respect for the things S-E does right (Actraiser Renaissance, Heroes and Sephy in Smash, Trials of Mana, DQIII remake) but way more disdain for what they do wrong (literally almost 70% of everything else they’ve done in the past five years) and from the way my S-E senses are tingling, I’m banking on disappointment so that at least I can only be pleasantly surprised if wrong.
@Shadowthrone This isn't merely an offline version of the same game. They took the story from the mmo and put it into this new game. Graphics are totally different too.
@TeslaChippie If you aren't aware of raids introduced in Stormblood... maybe a good time to get back into 14.
Ah but will the Japanese release support English?
@Darknyht Oh, I meant releasing those things on the Switch! I must have assumed that would be clear since we're posting on NintendoLife.
Chibi rpgs are a no for me.
I'll take more real DQ wherever I can get it, especially with XII sounding....questionable. Hopefully this will get localized!
If this ain't a Monkey's Paw situation, IDK what is. At least, on the worst case, it SHOULD be easier for translators to make a patch for an offline Switch game than an online Wii U game...
I'm sorry, guys. The chances of this getting a localization after 9 years of expansions and stuff is absurdly low. This game is bigger than 8, 9, & 11 combined.
Will be keeping an eye on this on play Asia for English subs until I hear about a localization. Now they need to localize the other 6, numbers 4-9. I bought the play Asia 1-3 pack and have died so I need all the others for switch.
@Ulysses Square probably isn't going to release their last MMO on a platform when they are pushing their new Final Fantasy MMO.
@NintendoByNature DQ has an insane amount of text in general, and they do more than just translate, names of spells and creatures are changed as well. And this game is bigger than a normal DQ so if the West does get it..it will be at least 2 years down the road if not 3.
@Ryu_Niiyama I suppose that makes sense. Just hoping we get it sooner, rather than later
I'm fairly certain we won't see it I'm the West. I read some Japanese and played a not inconsiderable bit of DQX a couple years ago.
The game is bigger and contains so much more text than people realize.
It's a Mother 3 type situation. If it hasn't happened by now, it won't.
Cool, now we just need one for FF11.
An offline MMO? That's my kind of MMO.
Hori did an interview years back where he said he’d be interested in doing an offline 10 for western audiences. I wouldn’t be surprised if this game exists mainly for the west in the first place. It will get announced eventually.
Great. MMO without the MO?
SE please don't make me import.
If this game is offline, how do you guys get so much info about it?
Not a fan of the super deformed style they used here and the seemingly locked isometric view.
I might still get this though but I look forward to a DQ IX remaster with local multiplayer in tact.
