This week's arcade archives release from Hamster Corporation is the 1980 Namco "maze chase" classic, Rally-X. Here's some PR and screens:
“RALLY-X” is an action game released by NAMCO in 1980. Players control a car and dodge pursuing red cars while collecting flags. Stall the red cars using a smokescreen when they get too close."
Here's a look, courtesy of the YouTube channel Old Classic Retro Gaming:
One fact about Rally-X is that it's the game Namco's "Special Flag" - otherwise known as the "S-Flag" - made its debut in. The same flag features in the Super Smash Bros. series and adds an extra KO or stock in battle.
This game is available for $7.99 USD or your regional equivalent. Will you be adding this title to your Switch? Tell us below.

This is a fab game. Proper Pac-Man beater.
Very nice! I don’t think this is in the Namco Arcade Switch collection. The price is still a little high, but nostalgia may win the day.
I prefer buying collections in bulk rather than premium prices for a single digital title.
Even at full price, the Namco Arcade Collection is less than $3 per game.
This is nice, but I'm hoping for some of the weirder stuff. Everybody with any kind of major experience in gaming probably owns at least one copy of this one somewhere or another, so it would be nice to see a game that doesn't get re-released as often. I also do wonder how much of Bamco's arcade library Hamster got the rights to, because, while we've only seen the really old games, it's still completely possible that we could end up seeing Tekken or SoulCalibur come to ACA, and I'd buy those in a heartbeat.
I'll wait for new rally X, the music on that version makes it 99% better.
Ahh this takes me back, I remember this in arcades…
@alexybubble I wouldnt count on Tekken etc appearing but anything by Namco before then could be released.
@Tandy255 If you have a 360, New Rally X is about £3, no idea if it's backwards compatible.
@TheIronChimp Kinda hoping, since it came out in 93, that maybe they could do Ridge Racer arcade.
I know it's a 3D game but it's a very early one as far as the 90s go.
Nice, this game isn't included in all Namco Collections. In fact, it's been a decade since last time.
I'm glad they've released, as of now, 3 Namco games (out of 4) that weren't already on the Switch in their arcade version. Pac-man has been the exception, but it's totally understandable.
Hamster continuing to do great work in bringing back all the gems from yesterday.
as a lover of arcade games, there are still a certain few games I’m hoping they bring back (Kung-Fu Master)
Here's hoping for Galaxian, Bosconian, Pole Position and Mappy
And you can't talk about the golden age of arcade games without Ms. Pac-Man. I understand there are rights issues, but it's available on other systems.
@Dethmunk the Sega Ages series is over.
there will be no more Sega Ages on Switch.

Any chance they do a version of Nintendo Hockey? I know it's on the NSO service, but I'd rather not pay a monthly fee for the service.
Final lap 1 , 2, 3
This is a game I haven't played before, I might get it. It gets my attention whenever I see it. Here's hoping they eventually include Pole Position, too.
Also a thing to note: With the exception of Pac-Man, every Namco Arcade Archives released so far (including the upcoming release of Mappy) is not available in the Switch version of Namco Museum.
Just load up ridge racer on the PSP and it’s free!
@Angelic_Lapras_King New Rally-X is backwards compatible
@MontyCircus There's a new Arcade1up machine coming this year that includes Ms. Pac-Man so I wouldn't count it out for Arcade Archives.
Best announce ever! The game was dissappear since 10 years from any console. The last to support it was the Xbox 360. Can't wait to play it again.
I would love for them to be able to relaunch several Midway games (such as Tapper), the 1942 version of Join Strike (great game), Cruising USA, and Outrun 2 (Sega).
ITT: people pretend they didn't first hear of Rally-X from a Tim Rogers video
I love Namco arcade games but why charge 8 bucks. If you can, get Namco Museum for PS1 or something or even a plug and play. I'm glad Rally-X is getting some attention but still.
I want Defender and Centipede !!
Nice!!! Such a fun game & a true arcade classic! Glad Hamster is putting out Namco stuff!! 👍👍
@Dethmunk yea only it’s too bad those corporate idiots at Sega pulled the plug on the Ages line. For why I still don’t know! When Virtua Racing hit I had high hopes for Daytona and Sega Rally Championship! But Noooo! Lol 🤷♂️ Can’t make any sense of the decision to end it.
@MetalPhoenix83 a Centipede remake just hit Switch a few weeks ago but what I’m not sure of is if the original was tossed in there. However FYI, you CAN get Centipede & many other perfect Atari Arcade games on the Atari Flashback collection! Probably $30 area if you’re interested. Physical definitely not sure if still in the eshop.
For those of you (like me) that are looking to see the Midway/Atari Games Arcade classics and there’s a ton of them people, it’s never gonna happen unless Warner Bros Games does something about it. It’s the largest hole in the switch classic library, but can you imagine?
Defender
Joust
Defender II
Robotron 2084
Smash TV
Satan’s Hollow
Sinistar
Paperboy
Hydro Thunder
Marble Madness
Gauntlet I&II
Tapper
Spy Hunter
Gorf
Wizard of War
Timber
Bubbles
San Francisco Rush
Vindicators
Rampage
Xenophobe
I can go on and on here lol 😂
@TheIronChimp Tekken was released in 1994. Hamster has put games from up to 2002 on ACA. I don't see any reason not to include it, unless either Namco specifically doesn't want their popular 3D arcade games on ACA, which would be a huge double standard considering that the majority of their major 2D games seem to be coming over, or if Hamster has some unwritten rule that they don't do 3D games, which could theoretically exist, but we don't know, mainly because most of the companies that Hamster has worked with stopped making arcade games before 3D. I honestly think its somewhat likely.
@alexybubble Tbh that is more what i was meaning to say with regards to the time period I mentiined. Pretty much all games that have been done so far have been 2D games which I would imagine is a lot easier to emulate than some of the exotic hardware used in early 3D arcade machines.
Genuine Namco classic, wonderful to finally be able to carry this around and play anywhere. What’s really nice is Hamster have included an option to turn-on the start-up screen (Game Settings / Preference settings / Show Boot Screen). Not sure when they started adding that, Pac-Man and Xevious (very pretty start-up display, a “glitch art” classic) also have it, so maybe only Namco games. Would be nice if they updated their older releases with that option, I always feel coin-op emulations aren’t complete without it. Now, how about adding Pac-Land...
I like Rally-X but I would've preferred New Rally-X. What I would REALLY like to have are games that haven't/rarely appeared in compilations. Games like Galaga Arrangement, Cosmo Gang: The Video (which is like Galaga), Pac-Land and Mappy.
