Stop right there - if you haven't already picked up a copy of Quake from the Switch eShop, you might want to hold out for the physical copy instead.
Following on from the big announcement earlier on, Limited Run Games has revealed it'll be opening pre-orders next week on 27th August for a standard, deluxe and ultimate edition hard copy of the game.
The standard edition will set you back $29.99 USD, the deluxe edition is priced at $79.99 USD and the ultimate edition will be $174.99 USD. Here's a closer look at everything you'll get in the more expensive versions of this physical release:
Will you be adding a hard copy of Quake to your Nintendo Switch collection? Leave a comment down below.

Fair enough, given LRG's recent involvement with Bethesda can't say I'm surprised.
Now here come the complaints about it not being a standard retail release.
Seems mighty predatory when their DOOM release came with three games on a single cart.
I would have hoped for a compilation release of Quakes I to IV (Quake IV runs on the DOOM 3 engine) which should all fit snugly in a 16GB cart.
My God, $175 (plus hella expensive shipping) for only the first Quake game in a fancy box? They're obviously expecting diehard fans with more money than sense to cough up well over $700 on special editions for the rest of the series, no doubt.
I'm happy for these companies to be issuing physical releases to us physical fans, but this is absolutely ridiculous. Even the standard edition is grossly overpriced for what it is. :/
And there it is, the coveted Infinite Boxes Edition!
I'll be honest, I'm kind of tempted by the standard edition because of nostalgia, but will likely end up just buying on the e-shop. It's really hard to talk myself into justifying a $30-something purchase for a $10 game.
Whelp, I was going to need more than one copy to play with my son online, anyway, so yah.
It's just £1 for the steam code on Indiegala rn which gives the newer version on steam.
I'm playing it just now, it's superb. Just noticed it even has in-game voice chat.
I have a feeling as soon as I pre-order this, someone will release a quake compilation for the same price. I'm looking at you DOOM! 😤
@Silly_G Their Doom release was an exception to their standard practic, honestly. LRG's almost always done single standalone releases of games in a series as opposed to compilations. Blaster Master Zero 1-3 is a perfect example; each individual game got a separate release even though they could have been bundled together on one cartridge (Which they did in Asia). I kind of figured LRG wouldn't bother doing just standalone Quake at all, honestly. We don't know if the others are coming yet, either, although I hope they do. I might end up caving and grabbing 2 and 4 on Steam while they're all on sale, though...
@RupeeClock Given LRG is sending Doom 64 physical copies to Best Buy, I don't see why Quake can't see a Best Buy release in the future.
Well it looks like this game doesn't support local wireless play 😒. So I suppose I'll take a copy for PS4 & Switch. Standard edition is fine for me.
@TheDragonDAFan
I'd anticipate Best Buy copies too, though I've no idea for how available those are or how many copies get made.
Definitely not paying $175 for it, but the rotating Quad damage thing looks pretty cool to me.
I'll stick with the $10 digital version, thanks.
Nice but this one I may wait for Best Buy. Still too busy with Doom Eternal atm.
So as much as I like what Limited Run does... releases like this just feel like they've strayed so far from their original purpose, or at least what I presumed to be their purpose: to put games on physical media that would otherwise have had no chance. Quake is made by id, which is owned by Bethesda, which is now owned by Microsoft. I think Microsoft can afford to print their own physical copies, in however large a print run as they want.
I will get the standard edition for sure!
@RudeAnimat0r This has kind of been the case for a while honestly. The same thing happened with the Doom and Star Wars releases. I think No More Heroes I+II and maybe WayForward's games (at least the Shantaes) could've gotten standard retail releases as well given how notable those are. It is a bit annoying seeing big publishers go with LRG instead of handling physical releases themselves, but at least it generally guarantees a quality release for those games.
Yay, another physical release of a great game ruined by LRG
I literally just bought the digital version. If I had just waited a bit I’d maybe have went for the physical version. Oh well…
@dojmin In what way? If it weren't for the likes of LRG, Super Rare etc, the games they release would only ever be available as digital purchases. Granted, LRG did cock up big time with Streets of Rage 4, but at least they acknowledged this blunder, owned it and did apologise.
They're vultures.
It'll come to Best Buy just like the Doom releases. Don't pick this up and wait for that.
@RupeeClock so you don’t think complaints about LRG releases are worthy?
You don’t think a single tiny game on a cart with limited effort is a bit grubby at their prices? You don’t think having to order and wait six months or more is a bit rubbish? You don’t think microsoft can afford to print their own run of games and have much much better customer service and international delivery??
But yeah… tsk at the snowflakes that don’t like LRG…..
£45 quid to get this delivered is a bit steep…. And that’s just basic standard edition.
Also the fact that these days we have no idea if LRG is actually limited or not doesn’t help. Grubby little company
...and will be with you in 18 months no doubt. I love the idea of these physical releases, but the lead times (or even updates on them) and prices are ridiculous. I understand why, but it has turned me off completely. The only time I have bought into this and gone against my instinct and better judgement proved me right; I'm still waiting months and months after the digital release for any sort of news of a release date, let alone an actual delivery date.
Regular edition for me since I must go through LRG. Sigh... 😔
@RupeeClock
It should be a standard release. This practice is only getting more egregious with time.
Alternatively pay £7.99 for the digital version which is available right now! Limited Run aren’t likely to ship this for another 12-18 months but I guess they know how to target consumers who are obsessed with material possessions whatever the ( ridiculously high ) price.
Look at games like Streets Of Rage 4, Power Rangers etc. the LRG versions of these are basically redundant now, yet people initially paid through the nose for them.
Wish they’d invest their own money in the physical releases so that they’d be ready simultaneously with the digital version……but no, their business model is based entirely on pre-order so there’s zero risk for them yet they sit on the customers money for huge lengths of time.
@RudeAnimat0r Exactly right. It was supposed to be for small, independent developers, to get their games on a store shelf. Not for big, billion dollar publishers like Ubisoft, Konami, Bethesda, Disney, etc... to release "special" physical prints of super-famous franchises.
😡
Is it more than the digital? yeah, funny that when cartridges need to be made, inserts printed, assembled and shipped games cost more, who would have known?
I get that to be one of the cool kids you have to hate limited run and put up arguments about how it takes forever to ship, very few titles take over 3-4 months, there are exceptions but very few, Celeste, Panzer dragoon (which were delayed due to waiting for DLC and patches and tiny metal due to a dispute with the dev's)
It seems like they can't win, they did limited quantities people complained and said low runs enable scalping, they moved most games to open preorders/print run sizes made to demand and people still complain.
That said, their collectors editions are just awful these days, the amount of cheap garbage included makes them an instant pass, non functioning cartridges, standees, key rings etc.
@JasmineDragon ehhh the game is 10 but the packaging etc, I’ll pay the extra 20’for it. I would do that for most games just to be able to have a physical. Digital should always be cheaper honestly and that is where I find a huge issue with the digital game scene.
Profiting on nostalgic suckers. Digital it is
I can't help feeling there'll be a Quake collection available someday. I'll wait for that.
I love the Box art for that, very cool design, would look great on my shelf.
Thanks Limited Run! Your unabashed selfishness is certainly swaying many of us away from you!
I'm Australian, so that price for the Ultimate edition would be nearly $200 in Australian dollars. It is a ridiculous price for a Physical edition of a Switch game, I paid $14.95 Australian for Quake from the eshop, that is reasonable, paying nearly $200 Australian for a physical ultimate edition of a 25 year old game is not.
Love Quake. Already downloaded it. Unfortunately, it's without the superb NIN Soundtrack!
@Pavil I don't get your comment. How are they selfish? (honest question)
@GrailUK their price for the ultimate edition Charging $174.99 USD for a physical ultimate edition of a 25 year old game is pretty selfish.
@doom64_abit They aren't a charity lol. It's too steep for me, but I don't see that as selfish. Greedy maybe.
@GrailUK It is very greedy, No physical ultimate edition of a 25 year old game should have a price tag of 174.99USD. Being a limited physical copy shouldn't make any difference.
If Nintendo released a limited physical copy HD remaster of Ocarina of time the original 64 game, not the 3DS remake and Charged $60 USD. Fans of that game would complain big time.
@doom64_abit See I can see your point here. (Was struggling with selfish hee hee)
I'll be grabbing a standard edition, myself.
