As you are no doubt aware, today brought the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Though the event is troubled, there's still plenty of attention and celebratory tie-ins, with Google Doodle being perhaps the most impressive.
For the next week, when you visit the Google search homepage you'll see the icon to play Doodle Champion Island Games; it runs in your browser like other Google Doodles, and it's surprisingly in depth. It is inspired by Japanese mythology, blending that with seven quirky versions of Olympic Sports to beat. It's structured like an RPG, with various NPCs to chat to and even sidequests to tackle; we found a Kappa contemplating the meaning of life, for example...
Controls are simple (arrow keys + space), and there are some fun takes on popular sports, this scribe's favourite being a rhythm music challenge. We reckon it has GBA-era vibes.
It's certainly worth a look - let us know what you think!

That's actually really cool.
You know what else would be really cool?
If Google would stop spying on us.
@HotGoomba was going to make that joke but you beat me too it, ah well.
Played this for a while today. For a Doodle, it's quite a production. It's more-or-less a fully-fledged game, complete with anime-style cutscenes. Very impressive for a Doodle. I wonder if Google has been sitting on this Doodle since 2020.
It's a surprisingly robust game. There's a story, characters, dialogue, sidequests. It probably lasts as much as some indie games. Two to four hours, I assume. (More, if you chase scores.) The mechanics are fairly simple, as they have to be considering the casual audience. It's not Minit or A Short Hike — but it definitely hits some of the same notes. I'll likely finish it. (Spent an hour on it during breakfast.)
I really love the intro cutscene, super well animated
Clearly a better Olympics game than either of the Izzy games.
Google is very creative, yes.
If only.... they would stop spying.
A download option would be nice. And controller support. I simply HATE keyboard controls for anything other than FPS or RTS games.
@HotGoomba Now you've angered the Google God.
@HotGoomba Damn. The one thing I had to say and you took it straight out of my mouth!
@Poodlestargenerica True, but if the game is really as good as some on here describe, then it would be a shame for it to be gone forever at some point, no?
@HotGoomba but they need to know when we take a dump on the toilet to better serve us
Started playing this earlier today and it managed to get its kawaii little hooks into me enough that I played the whole thing. Very clever game design, much though I loathe to praise the internet's foremost mass surveillance company.
I'll just wait for the physical realease. 😃
@ThanosReXXX All google doodles are accessible from the google doodle archive
https://www.google.com/doodles#archive
https://www.google.com/doodles/doodle-champion-island-games-begin The website also includes behind the scenes information.
@Awesomebird25 My original point, although meant as slightly sarcastic, was that none of the games they make are ever available offline, and the Google Doodle site also isn't a very good alternative in that regard either.
And I was already familiar with that option, but thanks anyway.
@HotGoomba damn, thought you were gonna say a billion dollars
It's an incredible little game. Finished all the sports only to find there's like 30 quests to finish!
This is exactly how Google should enter the video games industry. Not showcase ambition with only moderate results, but to start off small and successful.
GBA? This absolutely feels like classic mobile Java game.
@grayghost668
And then why did you join in this website ?
@ThanosReXXX the game has an option for controller support. who cares if it's a doodle. both of your arguments were invalid lol
@Poodlestargenerica Ah, I see. Gorrilaz Jeep game, huh? Didn't know about that one, so I may have to look that up. Thanks for the tip.
@5yearsofmylifegone Oh, great: another smart@ss newbie.
Here you go:
You might want to read up on the community rules, before you make any more stupid comments and get yourself banned.
@ThanosReXXX none of my comment was an insult. i just pointed out that if you paid attention to the thing you were criticizing, you would realize, that the exact point you made is invalid. i hope that you aren't offended by being told that you're view about this vastly inconsequential topic is incorrect. that's a massive flag for you to check your own ego. and even still, none of what i'm saying here is an insult. learn, adapt. be human, explore things. that's what video games were supposed to teach you. i don't care what you think about me. i'm living my life. don't let something like this affect you so vastly.
i took like 20 minutes from my life to dispense this information to you. i hope that you read it. good day.
@5yearsofmylifegone I have no ego problem and I did read it, but regardless, you're still new here, I've been here since 2012. You might want to take the time to get to know the community a bit. You may not have meant to insult, but when I see someone using the rather immature acronym "lol", then it sure comes across as such.
I just made a quick, semi-serious comment, that in hindsight, had I taken the time, could have been a bit more informed, but still it didn't warrant someone ridiculing me for "getting it all wrong".
If you don't have anything constructive to say, even if it is criticism, then just don't comment at all, next time.
