This week's major Nintendo Switch release is Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. It's the follow-up to the 2016 3DS original.
As planned, Capcom has rolled out its day-one update for the game. While you can play the game as it is on release, this update coming in at around 500 MB, includes some changes and minor bug fixes.
Here are the full patch notes for Version 1.0.3, courtesy of the official Monster Hunter website:
Day 1 Patch: Ver.1.0.3
Important
- In order to use DLC and play online, you need to update Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin to the latest version.
- - You can check which version you are currently using by navigating to the Stories 2 icon on the HOME Menu of your Nintendo Switch and pressing the + Button.
- - Online gameplay requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- If you do not have access to the Internet, you can play local multiplayer, as long as every player uses the same version of the software.
About 0.5 GB (500 MB)
- - If you purchased the digital version, the total amount of required space adds up to about 14.5 GB.
- - Please make sure you have enough empty space before you download the update.
Main Additions / Changes
- Access to the content from the Deluxe Kit, as well as the add-on content such as the pre-order bonus.
Bug Fixes / Miscellaneous

Can't wait for when they release a patch to fix the framerate!
@VoidofLight yep. Game looks absolutely fun but the framerate kinda bugs me. Hope it gets fixed
Cool, now let’s get that performance update rolled out please.
@Dnj4 The gameplay's good, and the graphics are on par with the PC release, it's just the fact that they haven't capped the frame rate.. which is irritating honestly.
I feel like we got cheated out of 13GB w/ that 500mb.😉
I installed Sackboys Big Adventure today on my PS4. Disc box says 34GB install, the download to version 1.08 was 22GB. I don't think they want us buying discs anymore. Carts are still fine though.
Download required. No, wait, that's not true. Oh, wait.... lol
Figure this was coming....
@rjejr
22 GB for updates ?! 🤪
And for cartoonish graphic game ??
Sony was too lazy to compress their games unlike Nintendo.
@SwitchForce I mean, yeah. Day one patches are a thing in all of gaming. Can't really escape them in the modern world. At least we don't have to install the entire game onto the system via the game card.
@VoidofLight Unless one buys the Digital version of it.
@VoidofLight I wish carts were able to written to after the fact however I realize that would cause issues with hacking and piracy. But I feel like if cartridges had a little bit of extra space reserved on them for updates to save directly to the cart that could solve the whole issue of not having the "full" game years from now when servers eventually go down but that's just some wishful thinking.
I live in Japan and it bugs me to no end that Campcom decided to call the monsters "monsties" in the west as a lame attempt to cuteify them. They're called monsters in the original Japanese. Not everything has to be sanitized for the west.
@Daniel36 Well it's not required for you to to play and finish the game, it's just a regular update...
@Hck It’s less sanitized, and more just terrible localization in an attempt to appeal to little kids.
@mariomaster96 That is true. My bad.
the major issue with MH Stories 2 is the frame rate, its uncapped and doesn't come close to hitting 60FPS it hovers between 20 and 30 which doesn't feel good, in battle its not really ab issue because its a turn base RPG but in the overworld it doesn't feel good
@Anti-Matter I guess you’re too lazy to read correctly . He said 22gb in total for the game after the patch bringing it to version 1.08. It’s astounding how dense you are with your comments . A ps5/Xbox is using much higher textures/resolutions which all take up more storage space and regardless of compression will always equal out to more data than a switch game .
@Hck Thanks, I was wondering what they chose in Japan, and that makes me even more confused why they did that to this game. It's the dumbest sounding name I've ever heard, and between that and the cat's VA, the whole thing is presented a lot like Yokai Watch's localization (which.....crashed and burned harder than WiiU, and Level 5 is basically bankrupt...) I will forever denigrate it as "Monstie Hunter" vs Monster Hunter.
The original didn't call them "Monsties." It makes no sense at all. I can't imagine who in localization decided that was a good idea and who in management approved it. Someone was banking for a kids animation series or something.
@Hck The name of the game is already monster hunter, we all will call the monsters of monster hunter, even the kids.
@Anti-Matter "And for cartoonish graphic game ??"
Yeah that was my first thought too. 😂
Turns out, Sony released the game on PS4 same day as the PS5 launch, and it clearly wasn't finished. Part of that large update was the online multi-player that was supposed to be there when it released. I don't think it was really even an update so much as they just replaced most of the game. I haven't turned my PS4 on since to see how big it is now installed. Hopefully closer to the 34GB on the box than 32+22=54GB. I only had 80GB free when I started.
Buying a 34GB game ON DISC then having to wait an hour for a 22GB update really sux though. 😝 Do you have good broadband internet? I have 300GB now, which I need w/ a PS4. Switch is easy in that regard. I know you've been gaming a lot on PS4 of late but haven't seen you mention if you are mostly disc or digital.
@rjejr
I'm dinosaur so my PS4 games are all physical (with some DLC for The Sims 4).
But so far all my PS4 games didn't need huge updates or patches (except The Sims 4) since i played mostly cartoonish games. Last time i got LEGO Jurassic PS4 but the game made me sleepy during playing for relentless mission after mission (gimme some break like LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER)
Did Capcom undership this game? It's sold out everywhere online and Amazon seems to have it discounted to make up for the pitiful release day shipment numbers
Still runs better than Ys IX....
@PanFriedSoup Sad but true. Ys is more a Falcom screwup than Switch being underpowered. The thing allegedly runs bad on a PS5. Reminds me of Yakuza Like a Dragon....it's stuttery at full quality and ugly in performance mode (and still can't hold 60fps despite PS3 level geometry and draw distance) on a Series X.
heck even if they delayed a little just to add to cart and no loss in PreOrders I can live with that. And then later do more updates would be fine.
Oddly enough my cartridge seems to have been already patched. I was extremely confused this morning when I expected to download a patch and it didn't need one. I can also confirm that for whatever reason they're shipping this game in very small numbers, at least in the US. My local store only had 4 copies on release day. The store hadn't even brought the copies out yet until I showed up to buy one.
They should have started with that frame rate first
Now playing and finding Golden Monster Den and grinding them to higher levels before I leave the island. Still trying to get the Shark and Monkey or something to climb the vines. Did anyone find any of these on the current island?
@Hck I live in Japan and it bugs me to no end that Campcom decided to call the monsters "monsties" in the west as a lame attempt to cuteify them. They're called monsters in the original Japanese. Not everything has to be sanitized for the west.
This is the issues anything "en" or "en" grammar changes screws up anything good about a game all the time not just MHS2. For some reason the "en" finds anything found in Japanese txt as bogeyman. Take example "Lolita" in NISA YII translation(if I got the name right). But if you watch JPN anime they use the world "Lolita" as is but for some reason Western can do violent language but don't change those. So it's really a DoubeStandard going on here. What's worse is watching JPN anime and listening to the JPN voice and reading the en translation and you can clearly tell from voice emphasis they don't match the words or language or character body at all. Some fansubs do far better service for those translations.
