In case you missed it, Twitter has a verified account to talk about video games. Yesterday, it asked users of the platform what character they would invite to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if they could pick anyone.
While it's hard not to chuckle at the requests for Goku, Shrek and Spider-Man, some users took it a little more seriously, with suggestions such as Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Crash and Spyro and the ace attorney Phoenix Wright. One reply that stood out from the rest, though, came from the official Halo account. No words were needed:
We're not sure how the Smash Bros. team would go about adding a character such as Master Chief to the roster, but a number of other gun-wielding protagonists have made the cut before, so why not? Would you like to see Microsoft's video game mascot dominate the competition? Or would you rather see Steve from Minecraft or Banjo-Kazooie added to the all-star cast?
Tell us down in the comments.
Adding Master Chief should be easy. Edit: There was a Spartan character in Dead or Alive 4 for the Xbox 360 already.
Also, all characters in Smash have Japanese origin. Edit: They all come from Japanese franchises. I have difficulties seeing Crash, Spyro and Master Chief being added for this reason, but Master Chief would be my best bet.
@Bomberman64 Master Chief wasn't in DoA4. Team Ninja had made brand new Spartan and it was a female Spartan-458 called "Nicole".
@Chrno-x Yeah I didn't look much into it, but I figured that might be the case.
Still it goes to show that Master Chief in a fighting game does work.
OK, my joke wasn't allowed, seeing as my comment got deleted. Then add Bowsette or whatever instead.
@Bomberman64 Diddy and K. Rool were created by Rare (UK), Dark Samus was created by Retro Studios (US), if we're not including assist trophies like Shovel Knight.
Steve and Alex would be better
All based on franchises created in Japan
@Sabrewing Thanks, I didn't know. I only checked Fox since I knew Argonaut was involved in development of Star Fox but I found Nintendo made the Characters. Figured they did the same with DKC but I was wrong. Still no western franchises. Assist trophies don't really count in my opinion since they are so many. I'm sure there's more than Shovel Knight, though?
If Master Chief was in the DLC, this tweet would never have happened. Strict NDA’s and all that. It’s more important to look at who dodges these sort of questions in interviews and the such, that’s a far more telling sign.
I would be totally down for that. The Chief rocks!
I mean, we got a "Sony" rep with Cloud. Why not Banjo-Kazooie?
...no? Not getting away with sneaking that in? Darn, I tried.
Why not Master Chief? Would be a good replacement for Snake if that character becomes unavailable in the future (as Piranha Plant would do for the Belmonts).
Love Day was yesterday moron.
I'd love to see a Marvel character in there. No reason why that couldn't happen considering we have Ultimate Alliance on the way.
There's a green-armoured space warrior that deserves this spot more.
Microsoft just give us Banjo and be done with it
Gotta start the fight first big guy. Give us Anniversary on Switch!
for that very reason. We already have too many. hes too boring of a character for smash.
Shrek or Master Chief? Tough choice. Fiona could be an alternative skin for Shrek. And maybe Noble Six could be a skin for Chief?
It's such an outrageous idea; Halo on a non-Microsoft platform.
But my god do I want it, oh so badly. My body is truly ready.
I want to see an Octopath Traveller character. 😝
Master chief is an icon, I approve.
Why do people want Shrek in Smash?! Might as well throw in Tintin, Dennis the Menace & the Teletubbies in the mix. Sora is the only viable option that fits (Phoenix Wright would make a good assist trophy I guess)
I thought they already announced Halo in Smash during the Xbox direct? When it launches exclusively on PS4.
No thanks. We already have Samus for our space-suit adorned fix. If we had to have another, I would rather have Doomguy any day of the week.
@SmaggTheSmug : Hell yes.
@sikthvash It's a meme. Look up "Shrek super slam"
Defence Minister Mishkin is the only character that must be added to Smash 😁
Would be awesome with Master Chief in Smash, AND Master Chief Collection on Switch, with cross-plattform multiplayer...
@Bunkerneath Perhaps they are waiting for E3 to reveal them.
@KingBowser86 sure, but now ff7 isn't a Sony exclusive and the ff series started on the NES
Would much much much rather have Banjo + Kazooie.
Sure, give us the Halo 1-3 and Reach on Switch, and we can put him in Smash too. I'd be totally cool for with that.
Hey- I got an idea, how about no?
@justin233 and Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini, Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Donkey Kong 64.
Add Master Chief and Kratos to Smash Bros and I will be very happy.
@Bomberman64 It's a matter of time to see a character from a Western franchise getting into Smash.
Rayman, Crash, Spyro, Banjo, Steve, Doomguy, Dovakhiin, Shantae, Shovel Knight, Cuphead, all of those are great contenders.
@Sabrewing These characters were created outside Japan, but are still owned by Nintendo.
But soon, we will get a third-party character who is not owned by a japanese company.
@sikthvash People asking for Shrek in Smash are not serious, they are only saying that as a joke.
However, people asking for Goku are not joking, they are serious.
Banjo Kazooie!! Master chief second. F Steve
I'd rather see Banjo and Joanna Dark first, but Master Chief would be cool as hell.
Halo CE is an absolute classic in gaming history and Master Chief would always be welcome in my roster.
My fingers are crossed. As are my Gamecube controller leads.
@electrogeist the JFG crew would be neat as hell, but obscure.
When I was about 14 or so I had a friend, and we would go on to argue over who would win in a fight between Samus and the Master Chief for the better part of five years. This question was never answered definitively as they are both so god damn awesome. So for the good of my fourteen year old self, GIVE ME THE CHIEF.
Master Chief would be so cool. The most epic character reveal in Smash history.
If Game Pass/Xcloud comes to the Switch, then I 100% support Master Chief in Smash, if it doesn't then I say limit the Microsoft fighter to Banjo or Steve, with my preference being on Banjo, but with an understanding as to why they might instead choose Steve.
@MH4 Honestly I don't think any reveal will ever top that of Sonic's initial reveal, though Cloud gets close. Sure we knew third party fighters were possible thanks to Snake, but for everything that Sonic had represented up to that point made his inclusion in Smash so much more shocking than Snake.
I'm going to regret this.
Why Banjo? Why do people want Banjo so much? They did one mediocre game. And nuts and bolts was hot rubbish.
@duffmmann I get that! See, I grew up playing Smash Brawl and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, so Mario and Sonic being all buddy-buddy is nothing shocking to me. But I’ve done my homework, and I get why it’s such a shocking thing to those before me.
I think that, for my generation, a Microsoft character would kind of represent what Sonic did for y’all: old rivals becoming friends.
@victordamazio what's a Goku? (Sorry, King Cold DBZ joke).
If Master Chief gets revealed at the E3 Microsoft conference, Sakurai better come on stage with boxes of pizza afterwards
Think about it: Xbox Live is already coming to the Switch and many people think that means games like Halo will be playable on the Switch. While I do think Cuphead would be a first choice - I question whether or not Nintendo would take on an indie game for Smash. Master Chief seems like a likely choice because of how iconic he is. I could imagine the Arbiter as a skin varient.
There's plenty of reasons that won't happen.
The quality of the game doesn't determine the chances for a character to get in smash.
@The_Keywork in today's gaming world? Who'd have thought that Nintendo and Microsoft would be collaborating this time last year? Nothing is beyond the realms of possibility
Including Marvel characters into smash Bros is beyond the realm of possibility.
@The_Keywork HatosBlack isn't asking about the chances of Banjo getting in but why anyone wants him to be there at all, quality is absolutely the issue in his post.
@KingBowser86 FF7 was on other platforms around the time it first released in the late 90s and went to more in early-mid 2010s.
I doubt any series wouldn't mind having a character in Smash because of it's popularity. I don't think we'll see Master Chief, however it also wouldn't shock me.
Forget Master Chief! I want Rusty from Rusty's Real Deal Baseball!
Quality is subjective. People want him because they like his games.
My first thought on how he would work made me chuckle. He would be a sword version of snake since he can use the beam swords! Hahaha!
Please Nintendo... don't.
With the way this Microsoft relationship, Nintendo has, is going; I almost wouldn't be surprised to see a Trilogy of the first 3 Halo games release on the Switch. I think it would sell well and go over alot better than some people might think it would.
Though it would be interesting, nope Master Chief had no chance for Smash Ultimate. For Super Smash Bros. 7 he might though.
Xbox Avatar or no buy.
@Bomberman64 anything is possible If Done right Master Chief could be in a Fighting game, people ignore the fact that Snake is in Smash bros, Snake isn't really a fighting game Character in the first place, I have also heard people saying but Master Chief uses Guns mostly how would that work out in Smash Bros? well let me ask you all this Snake is from Metal Gear, (Guns, and Bombs)
@sikthvash It's a meme.
WE DON'T NEED THE CHILDREN FLOCKING TO THIS GAME NONONO
@The_Keywork quality is subjective? Banjo Kazooie had two games. One of them was ok, if not Donkey Kong 64-2, and one of them was not.
Name one character in Smash that isn't from a popular or quality series.
Don't suppose we could also get Cuphead as an assist trophy?
Welp. The series has been opened up to non-japanese franchises already. And Sakurai did say to expect te unexpected.
Now we just need Ricky Bobby.
I'm not trying to downplay your feelings towards Banjo and Kazooie, it's just that the quality of a character's series isn't considered when picking the roster for Smash because what one person finds as mediocre, another will find as the best thing ever.
Humbug! This is outrages! This impecably impossible. Obserd! Horrendous!
something something heresy
something something console wars
something something mixe- OH SHADDUP THIS'D BE NEAT
@KingBowser86 Not sure how Cloud could even slightly be considered a Sony character. Sony didn't make the game or own it.
@TJSpyke @Marakuto @k4therin3 Are you joking? FF7 was lorded around all kinds of "the brand new PlayStation" commercials back in the day.
@Marakuto Don't act like it hit anything other than PC in 1998. Took a long while for it to hit anything afterwards.
But hey, let's ignore the "mother-loving quotation marks" I put around "Sony" pick, seeing as that's how numerous fandoms and magazines phrased that battle against Nintendo and/or Link back at release.
Such a interesting character to put in Smash, almost as interesting as Doomguy /s.
Really hope that these characters that people cherry pick because they think their favorite character NEEDS to be in Smash Bros somehow get creative movesets because almost all of them I've heard of dont. Some people dont pick these characters if they would play differently, they pick them because of the shock value of a generic space soldier that can do pretty much what Samus does but rated M.
Cool if you like these characters but I personally feel like it would make Smash look more like a M.U.G.E.N roster with the sole purpose of shocking you with characters than offering different characters with something unique to offer that would make you want the character without being a mega fan.
I always saw Master Chief as just a generic soldier with no distinguishable features. Boring character from the start, IMHO.
@Mrillustrates That'd be pretty cool too.
@KingBowser86 joking? About what? Its ff7 is on the xbox and switch, its no longer a playstation exclusive. And the first ff games were on Nintendo consoles
@Ryan_Again I didn’t know I needed this until you said it. That would be so awesome! And if each character had a sub job...
@k4therin3 To start with. Then again, I don't know what y'all's ages are, so, heck, you may not even remember the release. Maybe you do.
🤓 Dorkus Mode activated: Just so everyone is aware, the main (and most important) stipulation for a character to be invited to a Smash Bros installment is that they had to have had a game or at least appeared on a Nintendo console in the past. This isn't about Japanese or Western franchises. This is clearly stated in the Nintendo Directs. Happy smashing! 😋
@Jacob1092 Look up Haloid on YouTube. You're welcome.
I heard from rumoured leaks that Master Chief is (RUMORED) indeed coming but not in the way we would expect, on Banjo-Kazooie first. Like Rayman In BRAWHALLA, Yooka-Laylee is in BRAWLOUT. Asking for Banjo-Kazooie is like asking for The Rabbidz. Although thier isn’t ANY assist trophie Of then but can sum1 Answer it their is any Spirits?! (but their is Rabbidz) also Yooka-Laylee is in SAME continuity (CANON) as Banjo-Kazooie and RARE is putting their eyes towards those other two (or Yooka-Laylee could be an instrument reincarnation of Banjo-Kazooie/Adventure Time Reference their) where would they leave Banjo-Kazooie? With a BAD last game, or to fight Challengers of what we call SUPER SMASH BROS. THE ULTIMATE OF THEM ALL! We've seen Mario & Luigi costumes in Rayman Legends and lets "not" forget Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. JUST DANCE 4 SMASH insert Meriho dancin moves
FR we could get a two-one character with Banjo-Kazooie, with Microsoft actually agreeing for them to be put in we just need Nintendo to make a Spot for 4 other 'LUCKY' challengers while Yooka-Laylee already secured their spots in another game. Here’s the problem..Microsoft want multiple characters to come to Smash Ultimate but with 4 spots left it would be too obvious to do a PS character then 4 Microsoft characters already suggested publicly. With the Joker surprise at the Game Awards 2018, why would Microsoft just throw a character out their to be put in when we Hell for Sure know Sakurai already has his 4 characters picked and now creating their renders in-game⁉️ Here’s where the leak comes into place..we have three characters we're discussing here..but ONLY one of these is making it into the game (LEAKED) Ah Hell its the one I haven’t talked bout yet! STEVE FROM MINECRAFT? Well that was obvs seeing why they ONLY added Mario characters to Minecraft but NOT Nintendo. Just to sum it up fast cuz my Phone gonna Die Master Chief is going to be a Costume skin so NONE OF HIS MOVES PPL. Also another hint to the Leak since it’s a lil gift in return for not having the link is DOOM• Also they could make Banjo-Kazooie a skin 4 Steve..Nuff Said
@AcidCatfish Cuphead could be a Minecraft Skin 4 Steve aswell
@calcetto I had totally forgotten about that!! Alas, neither Samus nor the Master Chick defeats the other, so the question remains! Great video though, makes me all nostalgic
@KingBowser86 i'm old enough to know that final fantasy 1 released in 1987 (jp) and 1990 (usa) on the NES/Famicom, and didnt see a a port to a sony console till the 2002 (jp) and 2003 (us) releases
@k4therin3 Not Cloud. Don't try to move the goalposts.
If Cloud is the goalpost, he's been on Nintendo since like 2004. Theatrhythm and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories had him years before Smash 4.
He was also in many mobile games and VII's PC port near the PS1 game's launch. Cloud probably resembles a "Sony" character to you because of lucrative North American and European marketing/publishing deals (which occurred after Square already self-published in Japan in 1997 IIRC), but perception is not reality.
I hope this does happen let’s not forget that Microsoft and Nintendo have a very good relationship right now. It is definitely possible. Also if not DoomSlayer or Chief then they could do Cuphead. His moveset is already there
@Bomberman64 King K Rool is of British origin, Rare is British. Arguably, you could also consider Starfox to be British, but the developers lived in Japan during its development.
@Ark Then we need to talk about a lot of irrelevant characters' qualifications if you're going to look after the times that they launched.
FF7 was the first major FF to not be on Nintendo hardware. It wasn't on Sega. And it was supposed to be on the N64 but didn't get there. At the time he was ******** released, FF THEN felt like it was then a squarely Sony franchise which was only reinforced by the exclusiveness of 8, 9, 10, and so on. That's why the art for Cloud's Sm4sh DLC homages the "Link vs. Cloud, OoT vs. FF7" of that time. You also cannot go backwards and say that FF as a series is "Nintendo" and then dismiss Cloud in the same breath because that, too, is a look-back and the same logic. So don't give me that "perception/reality" garbage when you're the one dismissing or ignoring inconvenient facts.
Why the bloody hell are you people fighting so ******** hard and performing so many mental gymnastics on "Sony" in quotations? What the **** do you have to gain?
And I want to know why me.
Master Chief in smash was a predictable choice. It could be a situation what Snake, Cloud and Joker got in Smash.
@KingBowser86 ff7 was released on windows in 1998, therefore making him not a PS exclusive character as of that release. And you mention 9 &10, which aren't ps exclusives anymore, so can you stop throwing around "Sony exclusives" cuz only 8 is now cuz nobody liked it
@k4therin3 FF7 was Sony exclusive on release. Period. The other games don't relate to FF7 or Cloud, but showing where FF was then seen as a "Sony" franchise from that point on. All the fandoms, all the magazines, etc.
@KingBowser86 on release it was a Playstation exclusive yes, but the second it got the Microsoft Windows release, it no longer was. Games 1-6 were released on Nintendo consoles, most with ports to playstation years later. 7, 8 were PS exclusive for a year then got a windows release. 9 stayed exclusive for ps2 for 16 years, but now has a release on all current platforms. 10 had its launch on ps2, but in 2016 got ported to windows. 11 got a windows release the same year, with a port to the xbox360 in 2006. 12 is now out on xbone, switch and windows. 13 got a 360 release a year after its initial launch. 14 launched on ps3 and windows. 15 launched on the ps4 and xbone. Calling the series a "sony exclusive" is irrelevant, it never has been since most of the older games got released on Windows.
@k4therin3 Not reading that. Cloud was considered a Sony character at the game's launch and that's that.
@Ark this guy is the best, doesnt care that cloud isnt a sony excusive character anynore, and hasnt been since the ff7 release on pc
Can’t speak for others but I found your original assertion baffling. You kept responding with the same stance in the face of criticism so it became a discussion.
“You also cannot go backwards and say that FF as a series is "Nintendo" and then dismiss Cloud in the same breath because that, too, is a look-back and the same logic.”
If you read my post, you’ll see I said Cloud was on Nintendo 15 years ago, not that Final Fantasy is a “Nintendo” series.
You’ll also find my post said Cloud, like Final Fantasy, has always been “Square Enix” above any particular console manufacturer. He, like the series, is open to appearing on countless platforms (be that PC, Nintendo, Sony, or Mobile). I provided evidence for that claim. You did not address it beyond rhetoric or misinterpretation. Like I said, you’re likely viewing this through the lens of regional (NA/EU) marketing.
@Mattman1156 yeah and I liked your post cus you're right about K.Rool which the same is valid for Diddy Kong. However, I looked up Starfox, and Argonaut (the UK devs) made the 3D stuff, Nintendo did the character designs. Still K.Rool and Diddy Kong are the most Western characters we have. Whether you consider it as adequate or not to say that Smash has Western characters because of this, is up to you. I feel it isn't truely Western since Donkey Kong is Nintendo.
@calcetto About the Nintendo directs. Could you ever imagine Nintendo straight up come out and say "We're not adding Western characters because we are cautious about it. That's why we add Piranha plant instead. Next up Goomba and then maybe we'll consider a Western Character." I don't either.
Of course they are gonna say that it is because it has to have been on one of their consoles, even if that is kind of weak as an argument. Many western characters have been on their consoles several times, even more so than ones they have added (like Cloud). Easy examples are Rayman, Banjo-Kazooie, Steve, Spyro, Crash, Assassin's Creed guy etc..
Also, I realized Halo and Xbox is not that popular in Japan so I see it quite difficult that MC gets added. Erdrick/Roto is a good example why popularity of a character in Japan matters more than the opposite for third party franchises.
@k4therin3 I'd never thought about FF8 only being on PS1, thanks. However, characters from it have shown up in other games on different consoles. Kingdom Hearts is the first to come to mind for me. Though, I don't know if Squall etc. shows up in any of the releases on non-Sony consoles, but I would be surprised if he didn't.
@Ark I've already gone through plenty of facts that you and everyone else don't want to hear - I had to resort to complicated surrounding material to try and respond to everyone else's mental gymnastics. And I refuse to discuss this any further.
@Bomberman64 ff8 was also on Micorosft Windows in 2000, a year after its initial ps1 release though, making no FF game a PS exclusive
@k4therin3 Thanks. So I checked what games actually are exclusive and only spin-offs/side stories come up. If we ignore android/ios as a platform Nintendo has most exclusives, not to add any fuel to the fire. Basically Nintendo currently has:
FF Mystic Quest
FFCC Ring of Fates
FFCC Echoes of Time
FFCC Crystal Bearers
FFCC My Life as a King/Darklord
FF 4 Heroes of Light
FF Tactics Advance
FF Tactics A2
FFXII Revenant Wings
Many of them being in the Crystal Chronicles sub-series. Hopefully they'll get ported like the first one is being now, so that we can get an update in the graphics and accessibility. Sony on the other hand has:
Dirge of Cerberus FFVII
Crisis Core FFVII
@Bomberman64 yeah the firsr cc is coming to switch and ps4 with online connectivity
Ring of fates will likely not get a port as a DS game
Echoes of time could see a port as it was also on the wii, same with crystal bearers
My life as a darklord is iffy since it was a WiiWare title, and not many of those left the wiishop
4 heroes is another ds title, so a port is iffy
Tactics Advance/2 is a GBA game, so likely no port
Revenant wings is another DS title
Ff explorers is on the 3ds, it could get a port, it wouldnt be the first 3DS game to get ported to other consoles (i.e. RE Revalations)
The PSP titles probably will remain on ps consoles maybe with ports to the ps4 later on, or the next ps system
@k4therin3 Yeah, good points, but why would DS ports be so difficult? I mean Ff3 and FFIV both got ports and remasters so I totally see a port of 4 Heroes of Light as possible since it's from the same team and probably uses the same engine as those two.
For the Crystal Chronicles, I don't know. It would be nice to have a collection of them. I don't know much about wiiware ports that have been made other than.... Hmm... World of Goo, some TellTales games, LostWinds 2, and Swords & Soldiers. None of them from Square Enix anyways.
@Bomberman64 well they were for the original ds, and not many of those get ports to other platforms. If they did get a port it would probably be to the 3ds, but they would have to recode them for use on a non touchscreen game like re revelations, cuz i know some of them used the touch screen in game. And the wiiware one wasnt a port, it was a wiiware original. World of goo also released on windows along with the wiiware version, and it got ports later on, like on the switch in 2017. But if SQE cares about My Life as a Darklord cuz the wiishop is offline now so they could port it
That would be cool
Shure, it would be cool to have master chief, but goku... that would be epic
@SmaggTheSmug The Doomslayer would be way better in mortal kombat becuase smash is pg12
@merti Smash already has a few characters from M rated games, like Bayonetta or Snake. And it's the juxtaposition that's hilarious. Doomguy chasing Luigi with a chainsaw would be funny.
