Many readers of a certain age may recall arcades full of fighting game cabinets, in which players sweated out hand-to-hand combat in a scene of rapidly rotating joysticks and frantic button presses. Of course, classics of that 2D pixel-art fighter era are now available in various forms on systems like the Switch, but there's a new title aiming to freshen up the genre in 2022.
Published by Aksys Games and developed by RareBreed Makes Games, Blazing Strike is due in 2022 and aims to blend nostalgia for classics with new gameplay mechanics. Mark Chung, founder of RareBreed Makes Games, is quoted as follows.
I was always fond of classic fighting games and I wanted to make a fun fighting game with an emphasis on mobility. Our goal is to create an homage to the classic pixel art-based 2D fighters, but with updated game mechanics that not only will bring nostalgia to 90’s arcade kids but will offer something new and entertaining to all gamers, regardless of whether they have played fighting games before.
The following description from the press release gives an idea of some of the mechanics that are being developed.
Blazing Strike features a 4-button system with six normal attacks: light, medium and heavy punches and kicks, as well as three defense moves: block, guard and parry. A Rush Trigger enables fighters to execute fast-paced attacks and movements, but using it will slowly drain the Rush Meter, sending the character into a temporary groggy state. This allows players to execute exciting combos while having to manage the Rush Meter. The game will include three play modes: Story Mode, Arcade Mode and VS Mode, with training, sparring and online match via Persona AI, and online play powered by GGPO.
It's still a way off but it is confirmed for Nintendo Switch; we'll be sure to keep an eye out for more details in the coming months.

Looks great, with the death of Tekken, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear, Virtua Fighter, DOA, and Street Fighter on Switch, it's nice to have a new fresh blood of fighters on the horizon. Would definitely check it out.
I'm not really a fan of retro-wannabes. This one isn't for me. Hope that the people who like this sort if thing enjoy it though.
Looks absolutely class! Reminds me of Streets of Rage 4
It’s no Dangerous Streets.
Looks like a good throwback. I’ll keep an eye out for sure.
@nessisonett lol, I just looked up that game. Man that looks awful. 😂
Mmmm, looking forward to it, maybe it's better than the usual 3D fighting games they all make nowadays...
@nessisonett
That is some serious side boob action going on there. This whole image, it's just mesmerizing...
@OldManHermit 🤣🤣🤣
@shonenjump86 There were so many Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter wannabes. People definitely forget how derivative the industry used to be.
@Heavyarms55 Considering this game is from Aksys Games which are known for games like Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Arcana Hearts, and Under Night In-Birth Exe, I believe this game will play similar in style to those games storywise and visually while adding elements from some of the older Capcom and SNK fighting games to the mix.
@OldManHermit didnt even see the side boob. I was too transfixed on the cheese wire up her a$$. Good spot 😂
@Ghost_of_Hasashi i was going to say that ARCsys is the one that makes guilty gear but then i looked it up and found out aksys works on the series too. thats a funny coincidence
This seems to have the ambition of Fantasy Strike. I wonder how the two will stack up?
@nessisonett I didn't know they put Fonzie in a fighting game lol
@nessisonett Lord what is that suits she's wearing??? (LOL)
I honestly love to see more traditional fighting games on Switch. The system doesn't have enough of them. Really interested in checking this one out
As always, curious about any new fighting games. Will see how this pans out.
I’m confused by the control setup. Blurb says it’s a 4-button system, with 6 attacks (as per SF2) and 3 defensive moves. Also what’s the difference between Block and Guard?
@gaga64
Presumably it could mean one of two things.
Instant guarding stops chip damage/Garou style (basically a less risk less reward parry)
Or probably most likely a stronger defence (no chip damage, faster recovery etc) at the cost of meter (maybe rush meter)
Kinda like blazblue barrier guards.
The other thing just sound like a typo.
Personally I love fighting games and dabble with all the lesser know titles, so Im looking forward to the game.
I hope the rush meter is more than making characters act faster during the duration.....but at the same time I dont really want a custom combo style meter.
I dont kniw what I want it to be lol......surprize me!!
@gaga64 I was wrong.
I looked at the original failed kickstart.
There seems to be auto block on normals provided your standing or crouching (ala Tekken)
But guard is your tradition hold back .
Kick start didnt highlight the benefits of either.
Other interesting things to note.
Initially it was a planned rosta of 6 characters with 4 more added for free.
But the most recent images (non kickstart) there is an image with 14 characters)
It looks like some movement options are tied to the rush meter (an enhanced? back dash/forward dash)
But to me it looks like its expended on EX style attacks (but just look like the regular special but with better recover so that you can link to another special)
But the animation is looking kinda janky at the moment.
I personally like the look of this. I think I have purchased most of the 2D fighters on the Switch, so the chances of me downloading this are high!
