Tetris 99 has been updated to Version 2.2.0 on Nintendo Switch, and this little update has given us something that players have been asking for for some time.
Yes, thanks to the new patch, players can now use up some of their in-game tickets to buy event themes that they might have missed the first time around. By handing over 30 tickets, you can pick up any of the first ten themes that were released (later themes don't seem to allow for ticket exchange at the time of writing).
Nintendo's official patch notes for this update can be found below. It's worth noting that the patch notes have been worded strangely, however, suggesting that you can sell your themes for tickets – trust us, we've checked, you definitely buy themes with tickets, not the other way around.
Ver. 2.2.0 (Released April 20, 2021)
- Feature
- You can now exchange some of your previously downloaded event themes (Special Themes) for game tickets using the Customize menu. Each event theme is worth 30 tickets.
- Overview
- The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few additional bugs.
Here's what you'll see when trying to buy a theme you missed. As long as you have the required 30 tickets (obtained through completing daily challenges) you'll be able to exchange them for your chosen theme:
Are you happy to see this option be added to the game? Will you be tracking down any themes you missed? Tell us below.

A good move anyway, the 30 ticket price for missed themes will encourage players to check in each day, or maybe buy DLC that will help expedite that process.
Either way it's a healthy thing for the game for either maintaining active players or bringing in some revenue, and it reduces FOMO.
My favourite theme is still the Super Kirby Clash theme, it has excellent visual and sound design and great music. Last 10 players remaining music is spot-on.
I already have all themes. I do hope they keep adding more.
The option to exchange tickets for missed special event themes has been available for some time. This update is adding the reverse: you can now exchange your special event themes for tickets, according to the Feature section of the release notes.
I've been lucky enough to get them all during their events. I love switching them around to freshen things up. I sure hope they keep releasing new themes. I'm hoping for a Astral Chain theme cause that soundtrack and sound design would be killer for a theme especially as it gets tense.
really been wanting the origami king theme but i missed its original run in july, so thank goodness for this
@Gamer_Griff I thought the same (although maybe not all the themes could be bought?), but I don't see any option to sell themes for tickets. Not that I would want to.
I get why they did this but I feel like it cheapens the value of the themes as a limited time release. I was proud to have earned every single one up to this point and now that achievement doesn’t mean anything anymore. Oh, well.
@thesilverbrick The real achievement was the themes we made along the way
@SwitchVogel This guy understands.
I'm very confused by this article. The ability to purchase event themes for 30 tickets has been in the game for about a year now. I know because I played a ton of Tetris 99 last year, earning enough tickets to purchase the Kirby and Fire Emblem event themes I had missed out on previously.
@RupeeClock The Animal Crossing theme is really relaxed. When I want to play Tetris but want to keep my heart rate nice and low.
@InvisiBulbasaur I don't think you could purchase the newer ones though (like Mario 3D World). Not completely sure.
@thesilverbrick as someone who only got a Switch recently, it's a nice option to have since I've missed a whole bunch of these. And they do stay limited for quite a while, so there is that going for it.
@stinky_t Like the gameboy one especially. That's a day 1 purchase.
Hopefully we'll be getting a New Pokemon Snap theme soon. 😃
@TryToBeHopeful yup, that's the most recent one I purchased.
@TryToBeHopeful
That's my problem with the theme, it's too relaxed.
The sound design is really important to high level play, you get feedback from every action and reaction that reinforces effective play, as long as the feedback is palpable.
This was definitely already a thing
@RupeeClock Not for me. I've got a feeling one of my wins came via that theme. And it being a Sunday morning...
Good for the people who've missed out, but I kind of feel duped for having played every one of the challenges.
As others have said, this was already possible for some event themes but not all, so I guess this update adds some more of them to the shop.
And for those saying it's a letdown if you've already earned all the event themes, it's worth remembering that they cost quite a lot of tickets in the shop, so you've saved yourself some time by getting the themes already instead of having to earn lots of tickets to buy them.
At last..!! Though I really, really want that Bowser’s Fury theme.
@RupeeClock Yep, that’s one of the reasons I bought the DLC. Theme’s and offline Marathon Mode!
@Dogorilla Yeah, I’ve picked up the Splatoon and original Tetris theme’s. They’re awesome!
I have them all. Wish we had an NES theme. Or other past Nintendo Tetris themes besides the GameBoy one.
@Gamer_Griff @rio_j @InvisiBulbasaur this is the ability to buy ALL themes. Several were missing. They’ve added this missing themes so you can have the complete collection.
The first batch had been available for quite a while.
@Burning_Spear 30 tickets is MUCH harder to earn that it is in the actual event. Event is still number 1 way to get these themes
We still need the option to select random themes. The same goes for Pacman 99
@TryToBeHopeful weirdly enough I do miles better on the animal crossing theme
Wish they'd do stuff like this in other games. Mario Tennis Aces in particular is one I'd like to see this kind of thing implemented, as we've only had it since Christmas 2019 in our house but still missing more than half the costumes, as there have been a lot of repeats in the monthly tournaments.
I am so sad that i missed the last event... now i am missing the Cat Mario theme 😭
@Stocksy @Dogorilla @rio_j @TryToBeHopeful @InvisiBulbasaur
For those of us in Europe we didnt have any option to purchase them at all. It seemed to have only been available for the US market.
I can't believe the Gameboy one is the same price. That was the only theme that required a win for us in europe. The others relied on points.
@LavaTwilight What? I'm in Europe and the option to buy some event themes using tickets was definitely available here already. And I earned the Game Boy theme during the event without winning a game.
This article is missing the point about being able to exchange THEMES for 30 TICKETS to use to buy another theme.
I missed the last theme they put out (just forgot to play that weekend). So I’ll pick it up to be a completionist.
@LavaTwilight I’m in Europe and I’ve bought them before. I missed the first few as I didn’t know events were running and I bought them ages ago. I’m In the not so Great Britain
@Stocksy @Dogorilla No, the Gameboy was definitely a win only because I almost didnt make it. I'm in Ireland. Perhaps some were available for purchase since some people are saying only some of them were available. I had all of them except Luigi's Mansion and one of the Pokemon ones and they weren't up for sale.
@LavaTwilight This article suggests otherwise: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/05/reminder_you_can_unlock_a_game_boy_theme_in_tetris_99_now
@Dogorilla oooh you know what I'm thinking of, I'm thinking of the first 'cup' where you didnt get a theme but a chance to win Gold points to spend on the eshop, every win was one entry and, and then the next cup was every 100points was one entry... then they introduced themes...
...my bad. Curse this faulty memory.
@LavaTwilight Ah yeah, that sounds right.
Nice, I missed a few themes I've
I really wanted to get.
This is one of the best (most positive) arguments I've ever seen in an NL thread. And yes, I would never have got the gameboy theme if I'd had to win (UK, here).
30 tickets!!! That seems expensive. I’m missing theme 12, but only have 8 tickets
@Dang69 That's exactly what I was trying to point out. It was the third comment.
@popey1980 Contrary to what the article says, the release notes say you can get 30 tickets to "sell" a theme you have. I believe it costs 15 tickets to acquire a theme.
So I could sell one I have for 30 ... then buy it back and the one I’m missing for the same price?!
@DropDash Yes, this. Very much this.
