It's almost the dictionary definition of a first world problem, I know, but I've been having an awful time lately trying to make my Switch cute. Sure, there are a ton of Joy-Con colourways that I could drop at least 70 quid on, but the issue is that they aren't cute.
Forgive me for being the kind of gal who wants lovely pastels in my life, but Nintendo's neon offerings just don't do it for me, and the heavy branding of the Fortnite and Skyward Sword Joy-Con is really not my jam. And sure, there's the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch, which is quite beautiful, but I don't want an entire Switch! I have one already, even though it's got more battle scars than a tank.

So, as with many things, I turn to the wider internet to find what I want. I scour Etsy and peruse Amazon, the havens of third-party sellers doing questionable things with copyrights and warranties. I find a few options that intrigue me - ExtremeRate's popular translucent shells, and various listings on Etsy with suspiciously weird titles like "Joy-Con Nintendo Shell Replacement Cute Pink Custom Console Kawaii Shell Wrap Set Perfect Lovely Cute".
The fine print catches me up a few times. It's hard, especially with titles this long, to figure out if something is a shell – an actual plastic replacement – or merely a case, or, even worse, a vinyl skin, which is basically just a sticker that will come off in a matter of weeks with heavy play. Many of the ones that are bonafide plastic shell replacements look really rough, like the seller found them at the back of a charity shop, or they come in weirdly specific colour options like "the soft green of a moss carpet in a forest at sunrise" and "baby puke".

Some of the kits come with tools, like all the tiny screws and miniature screwdrivers that you'll need, as well as video instructions of varying quality. Some of them arrive in a ziplock bag, stuffed into an envelope like the kind of thing you'd struggle to get through airport security.
They often come weeks after you ordered them, the parcel itself looking so battered that you wonder if someone's been using it for football practice. The contents themselves are usually of such low quality that you realise there's a horrible factory somewhere churning these adorable things out, and it wasn't just a sweet little old lady handcrafting Joy-Con shells in her living room. You probably could have guessed that, though.

I would love to find a reputable source of Joy-Con and Switch mods that didn't make me feel icky, but it's been hard. The vast majority of people who've hopped on the Switch mod bandwagon have been companies with creepy vibes and Etsy resellers, and finding that one trustworthy artisan Joy-Con shell craftsman has been like trying to find an ice cube in a swimming pool. There is eXtremeRate on Amazon, but the one item I ordered from them never arrived, and Colorware's incredible range of Joy-Con colours is tempting, but pretty pricey for a website with no reviews on it. I am adrift in a sea of confusing options.
This isn't an issue limited to Switch mods, of course. Trying to find a computer case or a keyboard that isn't all Gamer Bro is a nightmare. I don't need my keyboard to glow a threatening red; I really don't want my computer to load up with a message that proclaims that I'm a member of the "Republic of Gamers" (ew), and please don't tell me that my motherboard is called a BAZOOKA. That's honestly pretty embarrassing for me, like having to tell curious strangers that your dog is named "Duke Poopypants".

It would be lovely to have more – for the want of a better word – feminine options on the market, without having to shell out hundreds of pounds on small-batch keyboards and cases. My own custom keyboard setup is a combination of a 65% base with Cherry MX Blue switches and a completely blank blue/red gradient set of keycaps, and it's gorgeous. I'm looking for a similar customisation level for all of my electronics, but I know it doesn't come cheap.
The wealth of unsettlingly sweatshoppy businesses on Amazon and Etsy is hardly new, either. Although both have reputable sellers, they also have a pretty low bar for quality, since it doesn't really suit their business to be picky. Both are markets which have a huge "BUYER BEWARE" stamp on them – if you order something and it turns out to be a terrible fake, well, you should have done more research and realised that you can't get a good quality product for the suspiciously-low price of £6.72, even though the (often stolen) images looked pretty good.

It's all pretty exhausting. I just want adorable Joy-Con, and to fix my awful, cracked backplate without having to get a new, boring, grey one. Pardon the moment of "back in my day", but back in my day, it was super easy to renovate your mobile phone – the case would just pop off, and you could buy new ones in just about any phone shop (of which there were many in the early 2000s). I had a Winnie the Pooh one, because I was a child, and my literally brick-sized phone was mostly used for playing Snake and telling my mum that I was in the car park after school.
Slowly, companies realised that having their electronics be easily moddable and mendable would make people keep them for longer, and therefore not buy new ones; thus, we got the all-in-one, take-it-to-a-specialist-repair-shop-if-it-breaks kind of phones. It's anti-consumer, I tells ya!
But alongside this move away from consumer-friendly practices, those same consumers got savvy. With an hour of my time, a lot of patience, some tiny tweezers and a YouTube tutorial, I can mod things myself – in theory, anyway. People jailbreak phones, homebrew consoles, and generally mess around with Raspberry Pis to make whatever they need. Every hurdle that a company puts in their way will just slow these folks down. So why do it?

Well, imagine if Nintendo sold little DIY Joy-Con shell kits – and imagine the backlash they'd get when people inevitably break the inner workings of the tiny controllers and try to get their money back. Imagine that Nintendo's tacit approval of the modding process would be claimed by lawyers as an encouragement to void warranties, and the legal cases that would ensue. It just doesn't make sense. The Joy-Con are built to be clever little things in a solid case, not to be fiddled with by idiots like me.
Nonetheless, I do wish that consumer electronics had more customisation options than a bunch of pre-decided colours. At the very least, it would be pretty bloody awesome if Nintendo had a "Choose Your Own Joy-Con Colours" option, even if they were a little more pricey than the bundled ones. It wasn't even that long ago that the New Nintendo 3DS had customisable cover plates, after all.
But what do all of you think? Is there a gap in the market for more colours, or are you perfectly satisfied with Nintendo's existing options? Have you modded your Switch in some way? Don't worry, we won't report you to the authorities. We're mostly just envious of your technological skill.
And yes, I know – the minute I finally drop a bunch of money on Switch mods is going to be the EXACT moment that Nintendo announces the Switch Pro. Such is the way of things. Sigh.

All I want is a switch that looks like Pizza.
The short answer is, yes.
The long answer is, yes.

I'm reading this because it is written by Kate. Please keep Kate
I'd rather keep my consoles clean and simple. I'm not going to turn something expensive into a DIY project.
....but that keyboard is amazing, can't go wrong with a blue/pink gradient 👌
I'm always a fan of customization. Especially when systems have easily removeable parts, like the faceplates on New 3DS and PS5.
I'll never be the sort to crack open the casing and get into the guts of my controller/system, though.
Another great article. Although I don't want super flashy joycons, my current setup is a grey pair and I'm fairly happy with those, but the irony is, I want a black pair which they don't sell and probably was dev-only. I'd rather have the drift go away of my old neon red-blue pair and the gray ones never catching that virus, but probably not happening.
PS: your keyboard looks absolutely great, not that I'd use the same colour scheme, but I'd definitely use a spiritual brother version of it with grey and darker grey. And high five on "Republic of Gamers eugh"!
I usually have a silicone case on my Lite anyway so customisation isn't that big an issue- you wouldn't see it.
I just wish Kontrolfreek had more options for the Switch. I have the Edge on my Xbox and Inferno on the PS4 and they make such a difference for longer gaming sessions.
Hey, that White Joy Cons looks exactly like mine ! 😀
I had an absolute nightmare trying to change shells. I buggered the RH Joycon, there was a very small ‘door’ like tab that needs to be closed to keep a wire connected. This has broken off, so I can’t ensure that the wire stays connected
That’s such a cute keyboard! I wouldn’t mind if the article was only written to show that off <3
Luckily I don’t work for NintendoLife so I didn’t need to get a Switch as soon as it came out but I have resolved that I absolutely cannot buy grey joy-cons. I’ve been waiting for a joy-con pair with colours I really like but at the moment I wouldn’t mind I think it was the orange & purple set so I could have some extra compatability with my Switch Lite. Being the fickle person I am I also bought another Switch Lite because I decided I didn’t want a teal one, I actually wanted a yellow one! Decisions, decisions. (I’m dumb)
I am really pleased that my white 3DS has the multicoloured buttons I just love colours so much! That was such a great idea. I am wondering however if or when themes will make a comeback for Switch as if you can’t make your hardware completely aesthetically pleasing you should have a chance at least to make your software visually appealing. Oh gosh this comment is too long now I’m finished rambling. ^.^
@Snatcher you're a genius. i would love to see a switch like a pizza (no jokes!)
now on to the main topic.
i loved watching these things or seeing people trying to be creative of their joy-cons or the console itself.
I am surprised that Nintendo haven't sold themed docks by themselves, I think that would have a lot of potential and is obviously much cheaper than buying a new Switch
I cosign every word here. I would kill a person for some pastel Joy-Cons. The AC Switch looks amazing, but I don't need a new Switch.
I've actually opened my Switch up to do some necessary internal maintenance, but that was before I started going blind, and even then it was scary working with those tiny screws. It feels good to say nonchalantly, "yes, of course I've replaced the thermal paste" like a hardcore PC gamer, but I'd rather not do it again, and definitely not just so I can have a prettier Switch. I only did it in the first place because my Switch was having major overheating problems (which my new thermal paste didn't fix, by the way).
I will happily.jump on that old-person train and say yes, it was much better when we could replace parts of our phones ourselves, and the same goes for just about every kind of consumer electronics. Cosmetic mods aside, I DETEST the fact that you can't even switch the battery on most modern electronics.
I'm fine with the way it is now. I broke a left joycon changing the dpad. Then I ordered another one, and finally managed to change the dpad, now I have very good dpad. But my new project now is to put a PS4 dpad on my switch.
I have the purple/blue duo chrome joy con shells and switch back plate sealed as I'm too scared to do it myself, I thought it was a simple job but after watching a YouTube video boy was I wrong, I don't know if i should either sell them on ebay or try and send them away for £50 to be done for me. OR just pre order the skyward sword joy con's
Was it the Xbox Elite controller that you could customize online with the colour, buttons, etc. online before ordering? I don't recall the name, but that concept for Nintendo would be brilliant! Of course, like many here have said... fix the drift issue first before making more expensive joy-con options.
I hate tri-wing screws. I changed the screws with Philips screw.
Hardest thing of changing shells on a joycon is taking them tri wing screws off. They strip so easily.
How about producing Joy-Cons without drift first!?
I definitely wish it was easier to customise the Switch, mostly because the whole exhaust fan grille has fallen out on mine.
I’d be quite comfortable replacing joycon cases and the Switch’s back case but frustratingly the exhaust grille is part of the front case and from what I can tell that not only requires the entire Switch to be dismantled but also requires using a heat gun to loosen the glue holding the screen to the case.
If only Nintendo would hurry up with the Switch Pro.
The SNES buttons are all well and good, until you "horizontal mode" the joycons, and then the colours are all in the wrong place.
Love modding retro stuff. Have sprayed up a couple of themed gamecubes in my time and sold a black and gold console with triforce jewel disk in the lid, controller and memory card for considerably more than i paid for it. I have another 2 sitting under my bed waiting to be sprayed up.
@Tott yes. You can create your xbox controller and have it made to order. Shell, triggers, buttons the lot.
@Jayenkai good point!
I Modded my left joycon to have an actual dpad 😎
Then changed my grey lite to have all black analogues and black buttons. Looks Incredible!
I Never understood why the grey lite had white buttons etc in the first place
I think what you really want is a gaming PC or a car.
That keyboard looks hard to use
I was gonna tackle the joycons reshelling but with drift affecting most of my joycon I really didn't see much goddamn point. So got a set of third party ones from geotech and never looked back. Gba reshells on the other hand... Now that was a fun project.
The fact is, manufacturers are under no obligation to make their products easy to modify, and frankly, it's in their best interest if they don't, because ease of modification would imply to the consumer that it's something they are allowed to do, and can you imagine the customer service nightmare that would ensue when ham-handed consumers break their toys?
As one of many people who have customized their joy-con and who generally knows what their doing on the inside of one, HELL yes, like it's not as annoying as it was the first few times doing it, but yeah making it simpler would be great. Is Nintendo ever going to do it? No. But I feel like at least replacing the outer set of screws with standard screws instead of the y screws would remove a little bit of the barrier of entry for customization. Because, I could very well be wrong, but I would imagine the only reason anyone owns a tri-wing screwdriver is because they've had to own a Nintendo product. Also I just kind of find odd that the Pro Controller doesn't even have a single Y screw in it and yet the joy-con do, even though they have a more common and annoying problem.
Modded mine for D-Pad on the left Joycon and SNES style coloured ABXY buttons on the right + clear JoyCon shells for that 90s retro goodness...
... and now I want a Hori Split Pad Pro cause I can't stand the tiny joysticks on the JoyCon anyway.
Only thing I'm customizing is music in Smash Ultimate. >.<
Would be nice to have some joycons that work before worrying about what colour things are.
@Medic_Alert Fair enough. The main reason I went third party was for comfort mainly.
Sadly customization isn't profitable and unsustainable, and if it is it's very cheaply made like the shells currently available and decals / skins.
I've swapped out the face plates on my Pro Controller to translucent blue. I have a replacement Joystick sitting around here to replace one of my joycon with bad drifting, so I might just swap out the colors while I'm there. But I already like the default grey as it is, so we'll see.
I still want joycons that have the D-Pad parallel to the action buttons.
@Jayenkai
As a Solution, the Colour comes from LEDS, if the Joycon is handled differently the LEDs shift in Colour ;P
I love Extremerate. I have 2 custom switches, 3 docks, 3 pro controllers and 18 pairs of joycons all made exclusively with Extremerate's products. Only issue I've had is the paint starting to rub off from the scarlet red buttons on one of my joycons. Other than that, I've been extremely happy.
Bless your heart, trying to solve the first world problems.
What's that sound? Oh it's consoles crying to be played with 😐
I don't think it's that hard. I've swapped the shells on two of my joycon sets. You don't even need any special skills. Just follow the directions.
If I can do it, I feel like anyone can.
@KateGray
I’m with you on the look, although Science Girl offers the note that red-lit keys have limited use for dark work environments/ glowing fans are useful only at keeping Science Girl away though lol.
So ... with 3D printing, etsy, etc. it’s easier than ever to mod and if it’s too hard
Decal-erm. “ ‘ sticker-lady ’ “ type places offer fully user-customized stick-on sheets.
Thanks for writing! ~~~and if I get a switch I can buy an AC version and trade w/u the colored bits
I modded my switch early on. Clear shells, new buttons, mini dock and some stick-on stuff to make it all nice, but the best mode was to make a hole right above the fan.
When my joy-con a were drifting, I decided to swap out the entire Switch shell. I was surprised by the large selection on Amazon by BASSTIO AND eXtremeRate. But of course, I only had one real option, nostalgia being what it is, I had to go with the atomic purple shell. Since that was the color of my Game boy Color back in the day.
Personally I didn't find the swap to be that difficult, but then again I am familiar with taking apart electronics. Swapping the plate on the back of the Switch itself is very easy. It only requires removing a few screws, and there is a metal sheet covering up the electronics underneath that plastic backing. The joycons themselves were a bit more difficult but weren't bad to replace.
