Last week saw the arrival of three brand new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo. For many, the highlight of the lot was the release of Banjo-Kazooie - you know, the Microsoft-owned character.
While we think the overall design of this particular amiibo is already fantastic, Banjo's creator, Rare, has now gone one step further, with a side-by-side comparison of Banjo's Totaku. Totaku, in case you're wondering, are a series of collectible figurines covering Rare games, Sonic the Hedgehog and more.
"Totaku, meet amiibo. amiibo, Totaku. Play nice now."
It went one step further with a controller holder Banjo-Kazooie...
"Totaku, amiibo, meet Cable Guy. He is large."
What do you think of the amiibo version of Banjo-Kazooie? Did he live up to your own expectations? Tell us down below.

People, nintendo made this, damn why won't nintendo buy the IP.
I like the amibo better it looks better imo
@Snatcher They made 2.4 billion dollars in 2020. Why would they ever need this IP?
@backup368 Bc Microsoft is doing nothing with it, nintendo could do so much more with this guy.
@backup368 not enough.
The amiibo has more character thanks to the Jiggie platform but they both look really solid
Kind of trippy seeing Banjo and Kazooie amongst a slew of other Totaku figures that are based almost completely on Sony stuff
Expletive those are hideous.
@Snatcher Considering how bad Nintendo are at treating franchises that aren't their flagships, or RPG-related like Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, Banjo's chances of getting new games won't increase that much more if they were still with Nintendo
Banjo-Kazooie could've just as easily gotten the F-Zero treatment where they had a major presence to a point and then just became a non-entity after one more console generation, being relegated to an obligatory Smash fighter
@Snatcher Microsoft gave you the chance, and not even after selling 80 million XBOX 360s could they sell a new Banjo game priced at a generous $40.
@TheFrenchiestFry Still waiting on Fire Emblem to become a flagship series according to good ol' honest Sakurai. I did math and Three Houses only sold 420,000 copies in 2020 after selling over 2.5 million in the first 6 months of release.
@backup368 how is that an excuse??
@backup368 Fire Emblem isn't flagship yet but it definitely got a major boost in popularity thanks to the 3DS entries, FE Heroes and especially Three Houses
Three Houses basically did for Fire Emblem what Persona 4 did for its series in bringing a ton of people into it
@TheFrenchiestFry Well I think We would get a game or two at the least.
@TheFrenchiestFry I credit Nintendo's marketing and the fact they only have one console to worry about. However that also means the other IPs sell better too.
@MarcusIsCool Where was the brand loyalty? Their games have never surpassed sales expectations on XBOX platforms until Sea of Thieves.
@backup368 that’s true. Gives me something to think about.
@Snatcher Trade Goldeneye release rights for Banjo-Kazooie. Pretty fair trade right there since MS hasn't done anything with Banjo for years. Then release a 4-player Donkey Kong X Banjo side scroller. Next... Profit.
@Wilforce Nintendo actually hasn’t held any rights to the N64 game for over three years. What’s more, back in 2007, they actually negotiated for the game to be remade by Rare with Activision’s cooperation for the XBOX360, but due to even further copyright issues, it never came to be.

I mean they revived battle toads, surely they can revive banjo? I wonder if it is fear that holds them back? I mean Xbox championed Super Lucky’s Tale and that was only a slightly above average platformer, surely they can do a banjo game at least that good! At this point I don’t think people are expecting a sequel as good as the original but it would be nice to have something.
Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is bad Piggies in 3D
and Microsoft is responsible for publishing the game
Banjo was better off with Nintendo by pure coincidence as internal interest in collectathons at Rare was decreasing at the time of the buyout
Rare will never return to their golden age of platformers due to little devotion to the genre remaining interally but are still putting out classic games, though most of their retro Nintendo fans would likely not have a chance play said games all thanks to Microsoft
@Snatcher You don't know that. Microsoft have over 30 secret games in the works.
I own the Totaku version.
Why not make this article a poll? You guys do it for old box art every other week... 🤔
The amiibo has a better paint job.
@HaileySheridon Thats what I was saying.
@HaileySheridon
I am pretty sure they gave away Rare for a Reason.
Nintendo must have been aware that there were Problems within Rare.
@Snatcher Cause Microsoft own it now and have ever since they bought Rare
I honestly have never been a fan of Totaku, I find the quality really subpar in comparison
I prefer the Totaku design, but the amiibo has a considerably better paint job
@Wilforce So you think Microsoft wants to get screwed again? The bought an already near dead company that had bleed out the big talent before the sale. Which went on to finish all games originally planned for Nintendo to nothing but mediocre scores with grabbed by ghoulies, Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero, and arguably their biggest hit under Microsoft Viva Pinata (where kids could watch bugs have sex). Also don't forget that the Conker remake is considered worse in every way but graphics as they changed slot for the worse. Everyone pretends that Microsoft killed Rare. Microsoft gave them so many chances, but when you deliver nothing but mediocre title after mediocre title, you have to stop wasting so much money on big games. They even let them make a Banjo game and The talentless devs left at Rare said nope we making a vehicle game instead. Followed by sea of Thrives, a game that somehow reviewed nearly identical to the below mediocre grabbed by ghoulies game.
Now you think they are brain damaged enough to relinquish an entire IP just to obtain the rights to port one N64 game? How does that make any sense? Rare might be a broken company but without any IPs you cannot put smart leadership in place and rebuild. one day Rare could be on top again, probably not because Microsoft tends to be hands off when it comes to Rare structure, but we can hope.
Wouldn't it be smarter to just make a new Goldeneye that could arguably sell millions more then a simple xblive arcade game? Either way they have to work with the current James Bond license holder Danjeq through a partnership, money or both. You know the holding company that didn't give them the licensing rights for the arcade game in 2007 and cause the project to be cancelled.
In the end you can play the arcade game now through the leaked rom. Perhaps that will build enough attention to allow them to get the license to make a new one. Then again perhaps IO interactive can do what EA and Activision failed so spectacularly to do. Release a good Bond game so it wouldn't be necessary.
Edit: TL:DR; trade an entire IP for the rights to port one game? Seems like a ***** deal even though Rare has been dead since before the sale to Microsoft.
I don’t know I think we need more versions to find out
@enigmaxtreme Thats the whole point in buying it.
Amiibo looks way better.
@HaileySheridon Everything you said is 100% wrong.

If you want to cherry pick, I can do that too: put Viva Pinata next to StarFox Adventures, or Mickey's Speedway next to Sea of Thieves, ask me which company would be better for Rare to associate with in the vacuum of those two games.
Can folk please stop saying Nintendo should buy the ip.
They pride themselves on new game ideas. Why on Earth would they put those into Banjo and Kazooie instead of Mario haha.
The Rare that exists today is a small shadow of what they were in N64 days like so much talented staff left. Sure the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot is a different Studio.
At the time Nintendo cashed out I don't think you could say Rare was that much in decline. Sure Starfox adventures is divisive and been few exits but really was the 5 years after the sake where just fell hard and fast
Both great, but Nintendo have really nailed it with those vibrant colours. I may even open this amiibo 😂
Both look good and are very much alike. But honestly the amiibo seems a little better build, maybe its plastic is superior.
Don't forget the Youtooz, which looks nice as well https://youtooz.com/products/banjo-kazooie
I love how the Totaku brand is basically dead at this point, theyve not updated the website since 2019, The shop at I work at listed loads of totaku ive never heard of like Dr Eggman among a few of them ... poof deaded, Amiibo still wins tho
I want Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie to be released for the Nintendo Switch.
@bound4earth I don't need an entire thesis defense (that I'll never read) for a 30 second joke, but thanks dedicating 15 minutes of your time to the cause.
The Kazooie amiboo looks much better. Her feathers are more vibrant esp the ones on top of her head. Also the backpacks straps look much better on the amiibo. Finally the jiggy piece gives it a bit more character
I unfortunately missed out on the Totaku (don't get me started on how they're marketed and sold in the UK i.e. incredibly poorly) but I snagged the Amiibo and I think it looks really good!
@TheFrenchiestFry Nintendo treats Fire Emblem and Xenoblade very well! Fire Emblem was given a chance to survive because the DS games sold rather poorly even in Japan so Awakening did revive interest and since then Nintendo has really pushed the franchise with consistent releases and promotion. And Xenoblade has been a borderline yearly release for the Switch, Xenoblade 2 (2017), Xenoblade 2 Torna (2018), Xenoblade DE (2020).
At the end of the day Nintendo is a business and if a game does not perform or a franchise does not perform then they won't push it. But, they at least try to keep those games in circulation to a degree if financially feasible. I remember it being leaked that Nintendo tried to get Criterion Games to make a new F-Zero but they/EA declined... even if it is a casual pitch the franchise is not forgotten.
The totaku design is better
Also this comments, jesus this community lmfao
@HaileySheridon You do know everything you listed was Rare's doing, not Microsoft's right? Had Rare stayed with Nintendo, Nuts and Bolts still would've happened, just on the Wii instead.
@HaileySheridon Theres articles out there and theres rare staff that specifically state they didnt like the work environment working with microsoft, which is why they left.
Nintendo basically just let them get on with it and make the games but Microsoft were a lot more intervening which is how it came to be a lot of those old gits now work indie like playtonic
Even nintendo didnt like seeing some of rares work too though, they hated conkers bad fur day and I doubt we'd ever see him in Smash which is a shame and a waste, wanted to see conker and banjo duel in smash
@Noid so true
