Did you ever play Phantom Brave: We Meet Again on the Wii, or Soul Nomad & The World Eaters on PS2? If you did, then you'll be pleased to know that they're both coming to Nintendo Switch as a package - and if you didn't, now's your chance to catch up on some of Disgaea developer Nippon Ichi's earlier work.
Known collectively as "Prinny Presents NIS Classics Volume 1", the game includes Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad, plus all previously released content for both.
There's also a Limited Edition release of the game, complete with a physical release, soundtrack, art book, acrylic stands and collector's coins for each game, and a collector's box.
The press release promises "upscaled artwork", so we're hoping the sprites will look a little less smudgy when the game comes out this summer on the Switch.
Have you been dying for a remake of these two mid-2000s PS2 classics? Let us know below.

Yes can't wait to play these again, great spinoffs to the Disgaea series. The Switch is now getting the tactic strategy loves it deserve, this collection along with Disgaea 6 and Project Triangle Strategy are what I'm waiting for.
Never heard of these 😮
Comments Section, I choose you (to fill me in)!
Oh that's very cool, I'd love to see Makai Kingdom and La-Pucelle tactics in particular get this treatment.
Well that’s very cool. Nice to see games getting a second chance on Switch.
@Expa0 yes! The harder to find games would be great
Go NiS ! Great news ^^
I'm a big fan of Soul Nomad so this is welcome news indeed.
@Broosh Phantom Brave is one of the best SRPG games on the PS2/Wii. It comes with a HUGE recommendation DOOD! It is made by the same team as Disgaea, but not nearly as complex or grindy. It has a great balance of gameplay and story and the sprite work still holds up today! Think of it gameplaywise as Disgaea-lite which is not a bad thing as Disgaea is not known as newbie friendly.
The story is about an orphan girl who can see phantoms one of which Ash was bound to her by her mother after they were killed on a mission. She now goes about helping villagers who scorn and mock her, but despite this she never gives up hope as she wants the world to be happy. I STRONGLY recommend this game on the story as it pulls on your heartstrings over and over again and is simply fantastic!
@Wexter They should hire you for marketing because I am sold!
@Wexter Woh, sounds great! Thanks for the info 😎
Hey, Switch isn't too shabby with tactics games lol! Not played these two so glad they are coming.
Volume 1? Oooo!
Phantom Brave was really a good game...when the steam version wasn't crashing every 5 minutes. I suppose now I I'll finally get the chance to play it unencumbered.
@Heavyarms55 If I could I would review this game for NintendoLife for FREE and it would just be a gushing love letter to PS2-era SRPGs. I just love Phantom Brave to bits and it probably helped with me getting addicted to this genre which lead me to Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn back in the day. I cannot recommend (or gush) about this game enough!
If this is just Vol. 1, I hope Vol. 2 does Makai Kingdom and GrimGrimoire.
Tears of joy for Soul Nomad, not lying I am literally in tears of absolute happiness to see this game again.
*Edit - Holy FSM Volume 1?!? Thank you, I survived Covid for a reason!
I'm glad to see NIS launching so many games for Switch. I already have Phantom Brave for PC, but I wouldn't mind buying it again depending on the price, after all, the Switch became my tactical RPG machine. In addition, I am interested in playing Soul Nomad. Hopefully in Volume 2 they will release La Pucelle Tactics, another game that I have been curious about for a long time.
From what I can tell, Phantom Brave didn't see a Wii PAL release, which would explain why I've not got it already.
Music to my ears. Including the "Volume 1" part.
Nice surprise this one. Haven’t played these before.
Asagi Wars! When? Make it happen!
Well, there is now hope for La Pucelle Tactics. It might not be an outstanding title, but a title I remember having passed the chance on playing and dwelled on it...
A collection of TRPG I always wanted to play, but never got the chance to even add to my collection.
So tempting, yet so many play hours required... Call me interest and worried at same time, but mostly interested XD
Still very happy to see NIS showing off their old catalogue!
I'm still hoping for Skies of Arcadia to get a HD remaster on Switch
This is awesome, loved Phantom Brave on the Wii, wouldn’t mind double dipping on that, this will be a first playthrough on the other title though
GIG! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! SO GLAD TO SEE HIM BACK!
-Sorta!
lol NIS is going to have its entire catalog on Switch before the generation is out. Not that I'm complaining.
I've heard great things about Phantom Brave, so I'm definitely going to pick this one up. Now where's Disgaea 2 & 3? I want to have the full franchise in one place!
I have both (phantom brave was on wii as well) but I’m happy to retire old versions.
I know a lot of people complain about all the ports. But I personally love it. The Switch is opening the gate to view videogames as timeless as movies and books.
Phantom Brave is excellent. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't played it yet. I'm honestly shocked that NiS never revisited it. Instead they only seem interested in Disgaea now. But Phantom Brave was just as good.
I never got around to Soul Nomad, so this would be a good chance to try it. Phantom Brave is amazing, so that is a definite purchase.
Also add another vote for Makai Kingdom. I no longer have a functional PS2, so having this on Switch would be so nice. I love Makai Kingdom.
Never played either of these, but I'm a big fan of Disgaea 5 and I love this genre. A definite physical buy for me.
With Disgaea 6 coming out, NIS are going to rule my summer.
@Wexter d00d.. I’m sold. Thanks for the synopsis!
As a huge Nippon Ichi fan I am SO excited for these!
Phantom Brave alone gives WAY more than 60 hours of gameplay, there are 400 abilities and skills to build characters with~
People that love stuff like that like with class-based RPGs would really love this if they gave it a shot
Had no PS2. Would take nearly everything that says NIS...
@Altina what were you playing during that console generation?
I still have my physical version of Phantom Brave for the PS2. I don’t remember much about this game, but I’ve always found NIS RPGs to be a little bit... overwhelming for me. I would definitely give this one another play someday, seeing how beloved it is for some of you folks.
@shining_nexus Mhh...? In 2000 I have been at school, got bullied and excluded by everyone for being "not normal". My "mother" who gave zero F about me and didn't even cook was watching TV all day. She sent me to a summer camp. More bullying because that's what the "social beings" do with people they consider "weird", "not normal" or "not pretty enough". Someone annoyed me so much that I stole Pokemon from them. I had a Gameboy Color, from my grandma, also Mario Land 2, Wario Land 1 and 2, Doctor Mario and Pokemon TCG later. I had "fathers" old PCs and some pirated mainstream triple-meh bLockBusToR games my "father" gave me I didn't really enjoy but played them all day long to skip time, because I was all alone and nobody cared about me in any way. Also gave me a Pokemon Silver cartridge that looked obviously like a pirated version... Felt cheap, looked cheap, and the ingame time was always wrong. Also gave me a Gameboy Advance at my birthday. I had Golden Sun 2, Breath of Fire 2, Pokemon Sapphire, Mario 2 and 3 and Zelda ALTTP and MC. They had been fun...
Around 2006 he vanished.
2005 I was in apprenticeship. And thought that I would have friends. Well of course I had none. I never had. And people who act like my friends always backstabbed me at some point... Especially American friends have by my experience no value or meaning. It takes only one misunderstanding to make them go from "We are close friends <3" to "You're an %§"&!! <instantly blocks you>". Played World of Warcraft. FOR TEN YEARS. Because "friends". And in between I had a for me kinda useless XBox360. meh...
2013 I decided to get a PS3 and to play Japanese games. Because western games are boring and have no soul, no heart, and I liked my GBA games. That was nice on PS3, felt "at home"... Later I started watching anime in Japanese... Which was an improvement, because I always hated dubbed anime.
Then I decided that's what I want to do for the rest of my life. Being alone, like I always have been, but now while doing stuff I enjoy, without being abused and bullied by everyone and being a victim of "friends".
Wish I had a caring big sister that cuddles and headpats me... that knows how to cook... I'm actually happy that some psychiatrist sent me into early retirement because high level social phobia and autism, which I likely developed because I was alone all my life and not even my "mother" cared. It's just Aspergers though. That's that one that makes you socially a potato and everyone hates you for reasons you don't understand, but makes you cakewalk school... Oh. I tried going back to school. Seeking higher education. Well that was surprisingly way too easy and I had no problems with any test, BUT... 2social4me. Well, as a retiree it doesn't matter if I have reports and degrees or not. I can learn and grow with apps, books and Wikipedia too.
Vouloir, c'est pouvoir. Pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué?
Ah, I'm living alone now for 11 years. My "mother" doesn't care. My "father" died last year and he even blamed me in his last will.
...Everyone is always so nice to me. Really heart warming...
Yeah, as said, I'm happy alone. I'm always alone. I'm so used to it that it makes me uncomfortable when I leave the house. But it's okay, you can even buy food on the internet these days.
@Altina I honestly feel bad for you knowing that your mother was bullying you.
@Altina For what it’s worth, I find your eccentric personality interesting. I’ve always found it enjoyable to learn about other people’s experiences with video games and the impacts it had on their lives, so thank you for sharing.
Would you consider visiting Japan at some point? I know it may be very challenging for you, but I feel like you would have a great experience. And the people there are usually more polite and not American so that’s a plus! Hahaha.
I’ve been fortunate enough to grow up with multiple consoles and a PC, but my heart will always belong to the Game Boy (Nintendo handhelds in general) and has been the one constant that brought me happiness throughout my life. Those are some great GB games you mentioned and I still revisit those games on my 3DS from time to time!
BTW, I commend you for sticking with WoW for that long. My experience with WoW was short, but most of my interactions with the community were toxic.
@shining_nexus
"Would you consider visiting Japan at some point?"
No. Way too many people. Tokyo alone has more people than my entire country. Their xenophobia wouldn't bother me though. As someone who grew up with mostly Turks and Arabs, very rarely hearing my own native language and feeling misplaced all my life (like, really, who placed my spawn point here? Nothing makes sense...), I even respect that Asians in general are "racist" and consider it as "healthy".
And no, I wouldn't wish to be Japanese myself, if that would be your next question on that. The Japanese are very polite but they don't "mean it". It's just about manners and local customs. Look at voice actresses (or a girl band) for example. They're very popular in Japan. But one just needs to say that she has a boyfriend and that would ruin her whole career in an instant. Or, look at Kana Hanazawa for example, she's a so extremely popular voice actress that to protect her males are sometimes not allowed to visit fan-meetings.
So, if I would be Japanese and would look okay-ish enough or would be popular for whatever reason I would have an army of simps that worship me but dump me when I get older or have a boyfriend? Yeah, no... thanks...
The Japanese in general also tend to work way too much and if you don't fit into the system (like I obviously do not) everyone is going to treat you like garbage.
...Their women are adorable af though. And the language sounds super cute when spoken by women. (oh! If you want to hear something hot ask a French woman to talk in German with you. If she's having a heavy French accent, it's the hottest thing you will ever hear in your life. If someone wants to prove me wrong feel free to do so.)
"And the people there are usually more polite and not American so that’s a plus! Hahaha."
Nyahaha~ x3
<ahem> ...I don't dislike Americans. Every country has stupid or fake people. Though, Americans also have... questionable customs. They keep telling you how much they like you and whatever, how great you're, that you're really close friends. But if you say something they don't like they instantly dump you, as if the years of being "close friends" and "making you feel comfy" and whatever wouldn't mean anything... That's just fake. I don't dislike people for being American but given my experience so far I wouldn't care if one would tell me that they would like to marry me or whatever.
"My experience with WoW was short, but most of my interactions with the community were toxic."
Yeah, tell me about it. Everyone kissed my butt, creeped on me all day long, gifted me stuff and wanted to help me, because "omg it's a female! ". I got drowned in questionable attention from when I logged in until I logged out.
...I admit though... That was better than it's these days. These days when you as a girl say something a man doesn't like suddenly a bunch of guys pop up and gang up on you because they think you're a feminist and thus an enemy. Humans, these so called "social beings" are so nice yeah... Sorry that I exist and can talk, yeah...
If you want to play an MMO try Final Fantasy XIV. It's not just a better game, but the community (tried three different servers) is overall more mature, calm and friendly. Sure you've "weird" people there too, but not that many and they usually stay with each other and you don't see them in public.
@Altina I don’t mean living there, if that’s what you’re implying. I understand the culture is very different there and not for everyone. I personally would love to visit the country that makes all these wonderful products that I’ve enjoyed throughout my life (anime and video games). I want to explore areas in Japan that were inspired in Pokémon, Persona, World End With You, etc. I want to go game shopping and discover obscure Japanese games, play at the arcades where it is a dying interest in the west, sleep at the manga hotel and catch up on some One Piece, eat some legit sushi and try out those weird vending machines that dispense underwear... the list goes on. But that’s just me and the only way I would live there is if I was married to a local.
@shining_nexus Yeah. It's an interesting country, also from the architecture, history, culture, even the religion...
But... There are really way too many people per sqkm for my liking. Also, as a foreigner we would most likely want to live in Tokio. Because that's where all the famous nerd stuff is at, also the international stuff and the people are for sure less likely to be racist there. But have you seen how high the rents there are? I would be okay with these tiny apartments because my 40sqm apartment is imo too big for me anyway. But... these rents, dude! Also, that city really has more people than my entire country!
And look at that skyline... https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/83/Tokyo_from_the_top_of_the_SkyTree_%28cropped%29.JPG/1920px-Tokyo_from_the_top_of_the_SkyTree_%28cropped%29.JPG

@Ralizah Truth, NIS has probably been one of Switch's most prolific 3rd parties, and from very early on, too.
