Since Sega's Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 arrived on the Nintendo Switch last December it's been receiving a number of free updates. So far, we've got new modes, characters, and even Sonic the Hedgehog, and now the company has rolled out its third (and final) free content update for the game.
In the Switch version, this update includes four new characters, four new songs, a spectator mode and a super spicy difficulty mode. Here are the full details, courtesy of Gematsu:
- Four New Characters
- Harpy (voiced by Risa Taneda)
- Ragnus (voiced by Akira Miki)
- Legamunt (voiced by Yuuki Ishikari)
- Rozatte (voiced by Shuusaku Shirakawa)
- Cross-Generation Multiplayer – PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 users can now play together online. Various leaderboards are now also shared between PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
- Four New Songs
- “Koisuru Saikyou Kakutou Joou” from Puyo Puyo!!‘s Rulue battle
- “Puyo! Boss Manzai (Demo from Puyopuyo)” from Puyo Puyo!!‘s boss skit
- “Lets! Saishuu Puyo Shoubu!” from Puyo Puyo 7‘s last boss battle
- “Escape from the City – Cash Cash RMX” from Sonic Generations
- Spectator Mode – A “Spectator Mode” has been added to watch online “VS” and “Skill Battle” matches.
- Super Spicy Difficulty – “Super Spicy” bosses are even more difficult than the already difficulty “Spicy” bosses, but defeating them has a high chance of earning you a high level item card.

How many PUYO PUYO PUYO do we need on Switch ... ? The (still) high price isnt really helping as well to consider purchasing a 6th Puyo Game.
@barneygumble this is only a content update for PuyoPuyo 2, not a new entry in the series
Kinda sucks that this is the final patch but whatevs
The next Puyo game should be localised as Mean Bean Machine 2.
Its cool that there still supporting the game, makes it worth the price.
@barneygumble so updates are a problem?
He's not wrong though. Puyo Puyo Champions and Puyo Puyo Tetris was enough.
I was baffled at the enthusiasm for PPT2 considering that I couldn't spot any new content worth a damn apart from the skill battles, and that isn't really worth releasing a whole new instalment for (it was one of my least favourite modes anyway).
Other than a handful of new characters and other inconsequential superficialities, the game is 90% identical (perhaps that estimate is a little generous).
And while I sat through the "story" mode, it is so inane and nonsensical that unless the game was an RPG mash-up with puzzle elements, the inclusion of a story felt totally arbitrary.
By all means pick it up if you haven't picked up PPT1 yet, but this is one of the redundant sequels I have ever seen (Space Invaders Extreme 2 being another example of such a sequel). Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed them tremendously being the Tetris nut that I am, but I'm still dumbfounded that PPT2 gets praised to high heaven while other less derivative sequels get panned.
I have already completed the story mode (4 stars and all) so I don't see what this will add to the experience, but yaay, I guess...
Sonic Team should focus on Puyo Puyo from now on and leave actual Sonic games to Christian Whitehead and the Mania devs.
I'm pleased with the content updates, I'm still worried about the slowdowns in the Switch version. Do Risukuma and Squares still cause lag with their animations?
@Noid Don't you remember the last one? Sonic wasn't in it, because brain games are NOT his forte, he'd rather do things with his feet and disguises than use his brain. That's more of a "Tails" thing.
Shame cross won't work with all systems. Then the online on Xbox version won't be dead.
Also, where's Dr. Robotnik?
Why's everyone saying 'we don't need another Puyo game on switch and 'the story is weird and makes no sense'? First of all, the last puyo game was mainly for tournaments and Puyo tetris 1 came out 7 years ago. Second of all, it's a Puyo game. Puyo stories aren't supposed to make sense.
Gotta get Sonic on there for the clickbait clicks despite him being added in the previous update, amirite?
