Katana Zero was one of the indie hits of 2019 and since then the game's developer Askiisoft has been working on the free DLC.
Last February, it was revealed how the content would be three times the size of what was originally planned, and now, in a new update over on the company's website, it's been revealed it's "6x" the originally planned size. Here's what you can expect from this much content:
"That’s a bit over half the size of the main game. This means more levels, mechanics, enemies, bosses, and intertwined story elements. It’s less like a DLC and more like Katana 1.5."
Despite the scale, it's will still be "on the house" (in other words, free). Although development has slowed down over the past year, it's now returning to normal.
As for when it'll arrive, the creator - Justin Stander - hasn't really thought about this just yet, but one thing that has been confirmed is that it won't be expanding anymore:
"The short answer is - I don’t know yet. There’s a ton of content finished, but this is a large project and I’m aspiring to the same level of quality and attention of the base game. I’m also still doing all the programming and design myself - this is my passion project after all. But don’t fret! The game is progressing at a healthy pace, and the whole dev team is working full steam on production. The DLC won’t be expanding anymore either - the plan is set and now we’re focused on finishing it."
When Katana Zero originally arrived on the Switch in April 2019, we praised its tough hair-raising action sequences, gripping narrative and impeccable sense of style. Learn more about it in our review.

It was pretty good but there’s definitely room for this expansion. Here’s hoping it delivers.
Random question given the topic, but does anyone else who owns multiple consoles buy certain games for one machine over another? I find myself buying a game on Switch or Xbox or PlayStation because it feels right for that system. Please tell me I'm not the only one!
I absolutely LOVE this game, it's challenging but not enough to frustrate too much. I'm stuck right now on the helicopter/motorcycle but I'll get past it soon. I played for a solid 4 hours and made it through a large portion of the game in my first sit down with it. So this free DLC sounds phenomenal and makes me glad I chose to pick it up digitally.
Man, I've been dying to get this DLC for a very long time. I'm glad we've gotten more updates on its status, as this game is still one of my favorites on the Switch.
Geesh! Consider it purchased. 😁
@__jamiie yeah I buy Indies and Nintendo games mostly for switch. Everything else on pc and xbox
@Automated_Unit_4937 Thank you for making me feel slightly more sane.
This guy is nuts! I’d happily pay for a “Katana Zero 1.5”. Do a free score attack mode and call it a day.
1st playthrough was satisfying just i was expecting something different to happen on the 2nd. don't need more from the game but this is great. wonder if there's gonna be a tennis mode
This is like Silk Song all over again. Wouldnt be surprised if it becomes a stand alone title.
Also, where the hell is the Cuphead DLC?
Didn't even know there was DLC in the works. I'm still playing the base game, but happy to have more on the way.
great news... this game is simply incredible!!!
Free? That's very generous. I would gladly pay for this. I wish the dude at least done a humble bundle style 'pay what you want' model. Feels criminal taking it for free.
Kudos to the developer.
@__jamiie I buy my RPGs for the switch, because the portability makes it way easier to make progress in the short windows I have to play anything.
Also releasing it for free at this point is foolish, hope it doesn't hurt the company
This is very exciting and I never realized this was happening. Very generous indeed, and easily could’ve been priced, and I still would’ve bought it.
One of the best games on Switch as it is. The most cinematic, and narratively gripping, 2D game I've ever played.
Now I know why the physical release is taking so long to appear, lol.
Not so great news as every so often i keep reading about this 3x, 6x bigger than planned DLC. I personally would probably like to see any kind of new material over a certain period than having to wait already one year and a half for some fabled DLC that by the looks of it, will arrive when the Switch 2 does as well. Finished the game when it came out and unfortunately haven't returned, but would like to. But seeing that it's not a big game per se, no reason to replay it.
I'm more than hyped for this DLC. I got the game recently so I am sure I haven't been waiting as long as some of you guys, but even the base game is just so amazing. With all the potential of the base game and everything it left me wanting, I can wait to see how this DLC turns out. Tbh, there wasn't a lot in the base game. Only a solid 12 missions, but it's extremely fun to go back and play a lot of them and discover the secrets like the swords and speedrun mode.
