Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Tops "Best Seller" Chart On Amazon

@dronesplitter Yeah, the last game I pre-ordered was the FF7 Remake and part of me wishes I hadn’t bothered. I think the only game I’d pre-order would be a Fire Emblem Jugdral Duology remake 😂

This game deserves a second chance.

It has probably the best relationship between Link and Zelda and THE best redemption arc of any character in the Zelda series.

The fact the game also seems to be running at 60fps is a massive deal for a 3D Zelda.

That isn't really that unexpected. I think if anything it shows how much the internet really lives in it's own little bubble... Either that or all them complaining about the price and it being a 10 year old port just went out and pre-ordered. Doesn't really matter as it shows why Nintendo rightly or wrongly happily does this.

This game deserves it, it's amazing.

I Know Wind waker and Twilight princess and good old ocarina of time is what most people probably would rather have had on switch. I'm glad it turned out to be skyward sword though! I love this one! Great music and story which btw canonically is supposed to be the origin of the whole series so it's pretty important!

People just really seemed to struggle with the controls and that's probably people's biggest issue with it.

Remember the first reveal when the controls went haywire while they were showing the first gameplay at E3 that year? LOL not the best presentation.

Ffft, why is this game being given a second chance? It doesn't even look like real "HD" to me. More like they didn't even give it the time of day and just extremely barely barebones "upscaled" and nothing else added. Also, the game was a big flop compared to the game that came out in 2017 and is a major step back (3.67 mil sales globally (352k in just Japan and 2.03m for NA)).

But hey, what do I know? I'm just spitballin' here and the fact you folks consider it trolling is kind of blind assumption, and we all know assuming things is a rather bad idea. Just sayin'.

They're charging full price for it simply because they can, and they know enough of us will pay it.

There is one condition that will cause me to pre-order a game. It must come with a wolf-link amiibo.

I’ve got my preorder in! Here’s to hoping that the new control scheme works, because I found the motion controls on the Wii version terribly frustrating. With this early success in preorders, I’m wondering if we really will get a 3D collection, or just separate releases of the other 3D Zelda games.

I agree that Skyward Sword HD is overpriced at $60/£50 but it’s just how it is with Nintendo Wii/Wii U re-releases on Switch.

Switch owners probably won’t mind paying that when some don’t have an old console to access it and other factors like playing it for the first time, ppl really wanting traditional controls etc

Not trying to justify this practice, it’s more so thinking of why Skyward Sword HD is still selling so much despite its overly high price tag.

I should be happy about this, but it just reinforces the fact that the general public doesn't care what price a Nintendo game is, regardless of the quality (or assumed quality) of the product. I hope to buy Skyward Sword HD when reviews come out and it can be determined if the price is actually justified.

As a backstory as to how it all started I think Skyward Sword is awesome given that some of the mechanics were gimmicky. Anyone that harshes it (like judging it based on sales numbers alone) without actually having played it through shouldn’t really be spewing opinions but for those who did play it in its entirety and still didn’t like it for whatever reason, I can at least respect your opinion.

I plan on getting it again when it releases despite being $60. I don’t care. It’s just $60.

Amazon US says you can pre-order it still right now. This game should not be hard to find when it comes out if pre-orders are going this well. I am not going to buy a game that comes out in 5 months. Waiting.

Economics 101: Price a product not at what it's worth, but at what people are willing to pay for it.

@Trajan probably 85% don't care and just want to collect a Zelda game because they like the series. Collecting for Switch is fun and this is a good game, just not the best in the series.

@OctoCallie20 The sales thing is almost entirely due to simply being a late life release. It naturally wouldn't have sold much more than Twilight Princess and BotW did on their home platforms (GC and Wii U respectively), and in fact it outsold Majora's Mask on N64. Not sure why people treat 3.67 million as bad sales anyway, it isn't in the slightest.

Sales aren't really a testament to public opinion on quality anyway--Kirby Planet Robobot is one of the worst selling mainline Kirby games despite being considered one of the best, and the ever-so-controversial Paper Mario Sticker Star sold better than the worshipped N64 and GameCube installments.

I didn't preodrer, but I'll buy it because I do love SS and would like to play it with normal controls. They had me at the soundtrack

Very much looking forward to it, but didn't pre-order. Will probably just pick it up at Walmart in store for $10 cheaper, like I did with 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

Nintendo become the most complacent company on the planet when they are doing well. When their back is against the wall they are the most creative company on the planet. When they are on top they gouge as much as they can.

I will be voting with my wallet this year.

This ultimately proves that the people who speak out against Skyward Sword are the minority and ironically are the loudest.

Still, if you're planning to skip out on this and you haven't played it before on the Wii, don't skip it. You're only missing out on one of the greatest stories in the entire Zelda franchise

Waiting until companies announce any pre-order bonuses

I would've preferred a port of Link Between Worlds, Twilight Princess, Windwaker, Ocarina, Majora... pretty much any Zelda game except Skyward Sword. Seriously, the Imprisoned is only slightly less obnoxious than the Temple of the Ocean King.

The beauty of living in Moscow is that Switch cartridges are always in stock and easy to find. Russians have zero taste in videogames, so they ignore Nintendo and leave all the good stuff to me. They only buy videogames in which you get to slice body parts off, burn people alive with a flamethrower, or shoot them to a bloody pulp with a kalashnikov. I often advise them to see a good psychiatrist, but they always get offended and threaten bloody revenge.

I didn’t buy Link’s Awakening new. I bought a used copy for just under $45. I am more tempted to buy Skyward Sword new, but will probably get a physical copy from Walmart for $50.

If you don’t want to collect it, you could always buy a physical copy new, play it, and then turn around and resell it. You will get at least 2/3rds of your money back (and probably more).

Selling an updated Zelda game such as Skyward Sword HD at MSRP isn't price gouging.

What you folks fail to understand is that Nintendo rarely undervalues their IP's.

The cost of Skyward Sword HD as a complaint is relative, and it seems that people are willing to pay full price to play a Zelda game.

I like how Aonuma did a bit of revisionist history in the latest Direct, claiming that Skyward Sword was a precursor to Breath of the Wild. Added a touch of class.

Isn’t he something? It’s very transparent what he is doing.

I’m trying to imagine the Nintendo Board meeting. Nintendo is very serious about their business side. They can see the sales of Breath of the Wild. Breath of the Wild is selling better than, I believe, every prior Zelda game sales all combined. The Board would be saying, “WTF!? Why didn’t we do this sooner?” Clearly, they would be saying, “This is what Zelda is going to be now.” I can’t imagine Nintendo allowing Aonuma to take Zelda back into the where he led it.

Perhaps Aonuma was called before the board. How would he answer to Breath of the Wild’s success and his own many Zelda games’ tepid sales? Apparently, he would sound like he was in the direct. “My Skyward Sword gameplay was the foundation for Breath of the Wild.” I don’t remember Skyward Sword being a blockbuster hit. I remember everyone hating it, and many did not even bother finishing it. Aonuma’s philosophy for Skyward Sword was “The Entire World is a Puzzle.” Interesting how that sentiment is totally gone from him now.

Aonuma has admitted he is not a FAN of Zelda. He didn’t like Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2, and preferred to cut grass in Link to the Past. Aonuma has been controlling the Zelda franchise for nearly a quarter century. It’s time for someone else to do it.

The way how gamers respond to Breath of the Wild is exactly how gamers responded to The Legend of Zelda back during NES Era. Everyone in the NES Era was familiar with Legend of Zelda. It doesn’t mean they all owned it. But they all knew what the game was, and what it represented. The game wasn’t really a game. The game transformed your game console into some fantasy world you could explore in. Did you know, delightful reader, that gamers only referred to Legend of Zelda as both its title and genre being the same? “That game is like Zelda,” as if Zelda were its own genre. Yet, it was!

Today, we say, “It’s like Breath of the Wild.” We don’t even really say ‘Open World’ much. A game can come out today and say, “I play like Breath of the Wild,” and immediately sell copies left and right.

In the past, many game companies copied and imitated Zelda to sales success. Neutopia series on the Turbographx-16 comes to mind. Today, NO ONE copies Zelda. Only one game I can think of did which was Okami (which was a sales disaster for the company). No one said, “This game is like Skyward Sword.” No one was excited about Zelda.

If Breath of the Wild was the successor to Skyward Sword, why the radical changes everywhere else? Why did Link lose his green hat? Why was Hyrule destroyed? Why was the linear game design shattered? Why was the brand reset if Aonuma was doing such a good job?

If Skyward Sword was so great, we’d have seen a Skyward Sword 2. But we’re getting Breath of the Wild 2 because it was Breath of the Wild that sold, not Skyward Sword. For the interest of Zelda and gaming, Aonuma needs to hand the reigns over to someone else. Aonuma has had over TWENTY FIVE YEARS, and he has little to show for it. Enough!

They are a business and only work hard for your money when they have to. Wii U got a stack of classic games because Nintendo were under pressure. Switch had a great first year because it was make or break.

Nintendo know they have an insanely loyal fanbase who lap up everything they produce. And there’s nothing innately wrong with that. And you are correct, complaints are relative. But I have been buying Nintendo for nigh on three decades now, and have a pretty good feel for their value proposal. And in the case of Zelda, charging €60 for implementing button controls is not a practice I want to encourage.

Skyward Sword is worth the double dip. Hope they add content to it like they did with Bowsers Fury. Some additional places to explore in the clouds would be nice.

When people sill buy this kind of game at full price, why would nintendo bother to make quality games? If there are enough people to buy overpriced old games, there is no reasons for nintendo to make new games. Why would anyone be shocked they didn’t give anything new in Direct?

This game's a 50/50 for me right now, I do want to upgrade my copy and try a regular control experience (liked the waggle swordplay, but hated how motion was used for pretty much everything, even when regular controls would have been more pleasant for that particular bit of gameplay >.<)......

But they didn't say anything about streamlining the experience and I really like this game, but boy! Does it have some excessive padding >.<

Fix that and I'm all in!

Nintendo get lazy when they are doing well, the only reason we got so many great games on wii-U and year 1 switch was because they had to push for sales.
Look what's happened now the switch is selling well, they have fallen back into a comfortable groove and are simply coasting on previous work knowing people will buy it regardless.

As a newcomer to the intends switch, I am going to wait until I finish my soon to arrive Breath of the Wild before I tackle another Zelda game. Breath of the Wild will be my first ever Zelda game. Plus it also gives me time to see if there will be any preorder bonuses for Skyward Sword.

Comparing both titles is insane. Skyward Sword was released on the Wii's last legs. Compare to BOTW? Being a launch title to a hyped-up console that was advertised everywhere. Every mother, father, and kid knew this game, and the Switch was coming out. Of course, it outsold Skyward Sword.

My mum bought a switch (she has never played a games console in her life before) to play Animal Crossing with my sister and also ended up picking up BotW.
Talking to her yesterday, she said that she's going to pick up SS because she had so much fun fishing and exploring in the "Old Zelda". She effectively plays BotW like Animal Crossing without the villagers, (literally as she hasn't done any of the quests but has just collected outfits and gone around hoarding mats) so is going to be surprised when she plays SS for the first time. I'm not saying anything to her, as I'm intrigued to find out how she views the more traditional games coming at them from the other side.

@SalvorHardin @Trajan Aonuma made MM, WW, SS, TP and generally the ds and 3ds games.

Technically he directed OoT but miyamoto was really still the principal on it, Aunuma had training wheels on still. Similar for BotW, after SS bombed Miyamoto stepped back in to right the ship and was really the principal in the overall design of botw in the early planning, then turned it back over to Aonuma for the day to day. So it's fair to say Miyamoto did the most successful loz games up to send including botw.

But Aonumas games are still exemplary on their own. SS is fantastic but different. It didn't bomb because it's a bad game. It bombed because it launched on a weird console core gamers abandoned, and the causal audience it lured wasn't interested in loz. And in top of that required a peripheral, and it was a peripheral that wasn't in stock ever. And at the point the console was otherwise abandoned anyway.

Of it launched on 3ds it would have sold better, ironically.

I remember in 2002 when Wind Waker was first shown. That also had a hate brigade (due to the toon like graphics). That is now considered a favourite by many.

So all the "$60 BUCKS FOR A DECADE OLD PORT!!?!?" crowd are the whiny, bitchy minority then?

Had no idea Shiggy was the lead in BOTW. Why is Anouma in all of the interviews and press stuff? Not going to lie, I did not like WW or TP. ALBW was good though. MM was amazing.

I’m looking forward to giving this game a go but I won’t pre order, learned that lesson a long time ago. Wonder if they’ll add any new content like they did with xenoblade or 3D world?

I won't be getting it. I think paying £30 maximum would be more reasonable. If they remastered it from the ground up £50 would be justified.

@Trajan when they started botw back as a WiiU game, Miyamoto was still running the day to day at EAD. He was heavily involved directly, rumor and interpretation of his interviews suggested it was him kind of righting the ship after the SS sales dud, though Nintendo being Nintendo, that was never confirmed.

We even have Miyamoto doing most of the presenting of the game that first E3 we got to see it, with Aonuma kind of "the other guy". But even before his change to "creative fellow"and Takahashi taking over the day to day, Miyamoto was moving more behind the scenes and stepped out if botw and other projects.

Aonuma talked about that back during release interviews saying the Miyamoto was very involved in the early parts, and it had an impact on the team afterward with employees always second guessing everything and always asking "what would Miyamoto say?" So even after he stopped working on it directly, the project was already cemented in the Miyamoto mindset.

Aonuma was probably the lead for the majority of the duration of development.... But only after Miyamoto set up the vision and direction it should take.

I quietly laugh every time anyone rants about how Miyamoto should retire. Nintendos bold reboot that shook the industry was still him! Without him every game will be kirby star allies

Never had a Wii. Games were the furthest thing from my mind during that era. Retail stores always sell it cheaper than the price people are crying about. I get to try a Zelda game I've never played before, plus it saves me buying a Wiimote+ and the Wii version for my Wii U, when I can play a superior version on my Switch anywhere.

@OctoCallie20 I think SS's 3.6 million was a combination of requiring the Wiimote+ peripheral and launching at the tail end of the Wii's lifespan.

There was the special edition, but in general selling a game which doesn't come with the attachment used to play it creates a barrier. They really should've included the attachment in the non-special editions.

I suspect the Switch version simply being playable out the box may do much better than generally expected.

I said this before, we are the reason Nintendo is pushing ports and remakes over new IP right now. They know we will pay top dollar out of nostalgia, so why release this as a $20 virtual console game when they can get $60 out of it by up-ressing the assets and adding in normal controls? Nintendo could remake Urban Champion and there would be people lining up to throw $60 at it.

All companies have caught on to this and are milking their past IP. This is why there is no virtual console and NES/SNES online is so pitiful. We have collectively told them we will happily pay more for Collections of ROMs and lazy remakes.

I have to ask why pre order? Why not buy it when it’s available ther will be plenty of copies don’t give in to fear! Xxx

Don't be using that kind of logic on here my friend, it's a blatant cash grab, and nothing else, people seem to forget that until Breath of the wild 3D Zelda games have not been stellar sellers, and like some have said Skyward sword only sold around 3.6 million copies, but in all fairness a fan favorite like the Wind waker only shifted around 3 million on it's original cube release, and around 2.33 million on it's Wii U remaster.

So now Nintendo have a big platform with a pretty good software ratio, so they will always release a game that's only ever been available on it's original console, as much as I would like the wind waker and twilight princess, I feel they have been released more than enough, not that Nintendo will not bring them out again on the Switch, it's just too much of a good thing after the success of breath of the wild.

I'll give it a few months until after it's out and scout a copy on ebay thanks.

@johnvboy Yep I mean if they brought out Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD on the Switch I would most likely skip them as I beat and enjoyed both on the Wii U - and I don't think the Switch version would be able to replicate or top the smooth inventory control that the Gamepad allowed for.

Again it's a lot of assumption in some commenters' parts that everyone has played exactly the same games as them, owned all the same consoles as them, and feel as ripped off as they do. Wrong.

I don’t bother with preorders anymore. On my switch I’ve gone entirely digital so I’m not worrying too much, plus Nintendo first party games very rarely see a price drop

I am really starting to think that a big amount of nintendo fans lost the value of money.
Activision released the trilogy remakes of Crash and Spyro both for the base price of 40 euro.
Sega recently released the remasters of Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 all for 20 euro each or 40 euro in a bundle with all 3 included.
Grasshopper Manufacture released the Killer7 remaster on pc and released No More Heroes 1 and 2 remastered on switch all for 20 euro each.
And some nintendo fans call people who consider 60 euro overpriced for a upscaled wii port "internet rage mobs". like @KryptoniteKrunch did XD

This is actually awkward for me as I really love Zelda games pre-BOTW. This was one of two announcements from the Direct that actually caught my interest and it is a damn port. The 60fps is fantastic as that is new to series, but the graphical upgrade doesn't look significant, and whilst button controls are nice, I never had a problem with the controls in the first place.

On principal, I am still not gonna buy this, until I find someone selling it cheap enough. Might take a while it being a Nintendo game but eh... I am sure they can do without the money.

Well Wind waker was released on the Wii and Wii U, one of which had a massive install base, only issue was the majority were more casual gamers, enticed by the motion control games, great evidence of this are the Mario galaxy games.

The first game was shown with a motion control element, but at it's core was a traditional Mario 3D game, it sold around 13 million copies, when the second Galaxy game came out the casuals were not going to be bitten twice, and the game solod around 7.4 million copies.

The Switch is pretty much a perfect scenario for Nintendo, a good install base of people who will buy all types of games, and in particular seem to like Nintendo's first party offerings.

Even a niche game like Pikmin 3 has sold around 2 million copies, the original games I don't think even broke a million sales, and the Wii U release was around 1.27 million, which in fairness did start Nintendo's recent trend of decent software to console ratios.

I have always thought that games like Skyward sword and the Wind Waker have pretty much timeless art styles, and to be honest age much better than the more realistic looking games, as long as they give them an HD lick of paint I am o.k.

I may wait for this as well, already have enough games to play on my Switch.

But then again, the Switch releases I tend to find always has an extra £10/$10 on top anyway even with the remasters, so perhaps the problem is that unless you play on other consoles also, you probably won't be exposed to the good value. Using Yakuza specificially, I always find it amazing how you can buy 0 through to Kiwami 2 for about £6 on PS store. The only comparable thing I can think of on Switch is Mario&Rabids which I see for about £11 on occasion, but it probably only goes so cheap because of Ubisoft.

@johnvboy They kind of do have timeless art styles, but I feel that doesn't help SS HDs case because the improvement isn't as noticable... which is strange because Wind Waker HD looked a lot better even if it was just bloom effect, it looked more colourful.

Regarding Switch games to play, can't say I have that problem, heck if anything, I have the opposite. =P

@Medic_Alert Nintendo's pretty much got the charts covered until fall/holiday 2021 when stuff like FIFA 22, Horizon Forbidden West and CoD 2021 arrive.

I really didn't enjoy Breath of the Wild that much and was really excited when Skyward Sword was announced in the direct. I can't wait personally.
I missed proper temples in BotW and hear that SS has some great ones including one of the best in the series.

Believe it or not, not everyone has the same opinion on Zelda despite all of the white noise that the internet produces making it appear that way.

I can't even find anywhere that lists the joycons in the UK and the game is in stock on Amazon.
I only really want to pre-order the joycons (unless there's a good bundle deal)

How people value things varies. I know lots of people on here are mortified at the idea of a game that required little work being charged £50 for... but value for me doesn’t depend on how much work went into it, or how big the budget was. For me it’s ‘Will I get a lot of gameplay out of this for my money’. If the answer is yes, then I’ll get it.

Skyward Sword is like 40 - 50 hours of Zelda goodness. That’s around £1 an hour. I’m in.

It’s different for different people. But this is why the Mario 3D collection as a bargain for me. That was 2 months of joyful gaming for me

@6thHorizon Be warned that the stamina meter and crafting in BOTW (two of the things I most disliked about it) are present in Skyward Sword too! Maybe they weren't things you disliked in it though.

Not in a rush to pre-order as have played Skyward Sword twice already. Think I'll get it eventually, at least there's no time limit on this one.

I loved the motion controls when rolling bombs, swinging the sword, etc but that mine cart sequence where you had to shake to jump. I failed so much I had to give up. It was the same with the pipe blowing late into Spirit Tracks.

I'll keep an eye on this to see how it works with the joycons in handheld mode but there's no way I will pay £50 for a remaster. This isn't Final Fantasy 7. That was worth it as it was practically a completely different game.

I was watching a Dreamcast Guy video and he made a good point about Nintendo pricing. It's too much. I've reluctantly accepted new games like Zelda BotW and Animal Crossing being up to 50 pounds but this is why I haven't played several Wii U remasters/ports for a second time. They cost more than they did on Wii U over five years ago. That is just unacceptable and I doubt I'm the only one who feels this way.

I never experienced playing this on the wii so playing it for the first time will be fantastic.
Also pretty sure other zelda titles will be added at some point.
I'm not surprised with the €59.99 price tag, i'm a little bit disappointed it isn't cheaper with it being a remake. But its zelda after all and i want to play it day one.

@Trajan I am of the opinion that most people who hated on this game are kids who never played it or people who were not good at it, and in today's game world if a game is too hard for someone it's obviously a terrible game. I thought the controls were perfectly fine when it first released and even consider this one of my favorite Zeldas. Obviously there are different opinions on everything but I feel on the internet its the people that hate everything you hear the most from. Anyway Zelda as a series is always excellent quality and any mainline Zelda is usually worth the asking price if you hold it up against some other games out there that are broken or unfinished.

I think I will get this. I've read some aspects are disappointing but that the dungeons really shine. I haven't played the traditional Zelda formula in ages and this is the only main series game I have not played at all.

Hard pass, just like Donkey Kong TF, Mario 3d World, and about 50 other ported old games I can just dig this out of my basement for free if I want to play it again. This new lazy, greedy Nintendo the Hutt is not getting my credits for old rehashed games. And if you preorder this because of "scarcity" go check out your local retailer where they have 6,000 copies of "limited" 3d Mario all stars, yet another low effort cash grab from the last few months. Shameful.

So glad it is doing well with pre orders. It's one of my favorites in the series and always hated on for motion controls. Hopefully the new control option will work for more people.

This was the only thing that really caught my attention in that bore of a direct and that's because I've never played it and I'm really itching for a new actual zelda experience after the sour taste BotW left in my mouth

But that pricing is a huge rip off so i won't be buying it right away if at all. So i guess I'll just continue to pirate their 3ds games, and see if any of their switch games go down in price. But if it doesn't oh well, I'm used to my switch collecting dust anyway

I'm neither a kid or bad at SS and it was my least favorite Zelda ever. The hand holding, linearity, bland story, motion controls, empty overworld, unskippable dialog, and repeated boss battles made this Skyward Slog. Everyone knows this game was devisive, even Nintendo.

@Trajan The #1 issue with the game was the controls, which is (supposedly) resolved. The #2 issue (Insane Handholding) remains at large though... But apparently controls alone was enough to convince many people.

Personally, I'm looking forward to playing SS again in HD and without motion controls.

Fingers crossed they'll also add a few gameplay improvements like they did with WW and TP. Reducing the padding and how annoying Fi is would be a good start.

With COD, although the formula is similar, each year is quite different than the previous, as they have 3 teams working on it, alternating every three years. Nintendo literally just sold 3 retro games for 60 dollars with Super Mario Allstars. Why spend 60 bucks on ONE old game like this.

Nintendo's pricing portion of their marketing strategy is effective. They charge full price and people buy it because they believe the products are high quality since they rarely go on discount, so Nintendo keeps doing it over and over again. It's a bit circular, but that's how it works.

I don’t have the global sales data at the ready or anything, but going off what’s published here for JP and UK, I didn’t get the impression Mario 3D Allstars or the Xenoblade remaster are big sellers. Of course they don’t have to be to still be profitable, but I’m not seeing this big demand for full price Wii ports.

This Zelda port is great for the more hardcore fans out there that will gobble up anything Zelda. I think it’s a poor decision though to dredge up this type of stuff at full price when your competitors will be showing the latest and greatest at similar prices.
It would have helped if there were other 1st party releases planned for the next 6 months that are big hitters that do excite a larger audience, but I’m not seeing it.

My concern now is that Galaxy 2 along with the other Zelda HD remasters will now actually be in line for standard full price release as well. Not as filler for Jan or Feb but possibly even during Q3/4 as “big” holiday releases (they did Pikmin last year). I truly hope theres actually something big planned for late 2021 but I’m starting to lose confidence here.

The new version doesn’t seem to be nearly enough of an upgrade to pay $60 for a game I already own.

I paid full price for Xenoblade DE even though my old copy still works fine, but there was a major graphical makeover and a bonus ten hour postgame. Skyward Sword seems to have only increased resolution and framerate. I’m not paying $60 for that.

Xenoblade DE sold over a million in a series of games which doesn't sell over 2 million.

@MajorTom Then Activision released Crash Bandicoot 4 for £50/$60 and barely anyone bought it. Perhaps because they told their audience that the value of a modern version of the best Crash Bandicoot games are only worth £10/$13 each, then decided to sell one for £50/$60.

Devaluing a series may offer good value in the short term. But it's not good in the long term for fans. The future of the series depends on people thinking that the games are valuable,.

Everyone keeps forgetting that Skyward Sword sold way less because you needed an extra peripheral to play it (Motion+)

That impacted a lot on the sales of the game.

I'm sad. I played this game recently and it's one of the worst 3d-Zeldas and Zeldas in general. Yet, Nintendo barely changes a thing, slaps a 60$-Price-Tag on it and people buy it like crazy. Same with 3D-World. One shouldn't support this lazyness.

I doubt that the price of the Crash trilogy has anything to do with Crash 4 selling less. The trilogy released on more platforms than 4 did and the nostalgia for the old trilogy will always be bigger than a new game with a different art-style.
Also It charted first in the UK sales chart for its first week. And eventually sold at least 830000 copies if you look at game stats (ps4 and xbox one combined), while the PC and Switch version still need to release.

Skyward Sword HD is the best-selling preorder across Amazon (US, UK, FR, DE, ES, etc), Gamestop, and Best Buy.

Whereas many third-party studios (like your example of Ubi) can't smell those prices. I guess exclusivity plays a small part in that, although that doesn't explain why Rabbids is $15 on what feels like every other week.

I just point out the fact that Xbox and PS fans enjoy simulated torture and murder; if they take offense, they're the source of the offense. In 2016, I walked into a videogame store called "Game Republic" in Moscow and asked the shopkeeper why he had 98% Xbox and PS games, and only a handful of Nintendo games (3DS only). He told me that Nintendo wasn't a thing in Russia, so I asked him why Russians only liked games where they brutally slaughter and kill people. He was befuddled. I told him I saw enough violence on the news every day and was interested in games like Mario and Zelda. Next time I went there, he recognized me and told me the Nintendo Switch would be released soon. It's now a 50% Nintendo store!

@Darknyht In a way, the success of remade old games and remasters is an indicator that the industry is out of ideas it can afford to make, and most new AAA games are widely seen as inferior to old games. If they'd drop their budgets down to reasonable levels rather than these $100m monsters, maybe they'd all make creative games again.

At this point Nintendo has become the worst of the pack, and the rest of the pack, even EA, just follows their lead. I miss unsuccessful Nintendo....

@NEStalgia partially copyright is too long and partially games fell into the same stupidity that Hollywood did after Star Wars. They constantly bet the farm on Blockbusters and use/manipulate the gaming media to shill it to us (unintentionally as they report on what they are allowed to see and interact with). Then they setup “Awards” to give accolades to themselves while ignoring the deplorable work conditions people suffered under to create their blockbuster.

I miss the days where companies experimented with smaller budget titles instead of trying to build the next mega-franchise. As much as I disliked it, Cadence of Hyrule was at least an interesting experiment. It seems like the major publishers have just abandoned the spaces that brought us games like Mega Man, Link’s Awakening, or something weird like Jet Set Radio and Space Channel 5.

@blindsquarel Yes while inflation has grown an average of 2% per year over time, wages has only grown an average of 0.2% over the same period. So it may cost “less”, but we have a lot less buying power to spare to purchase games.

@Darknyht Indeed. I hope that ends eventually at the blockbusters mostly bore me. Even Sony's vaunted masterpieces. I've been recently lamenting on push square about gravity rush. Ok their race to move to all blockbusters, only blockbusters (they even compare sales to the box office, directly!) They mostly abandoned smaller games like gravity rush, which is the reason I've bought PlayStations... Their smaller games. They're shrinking Japan studio. Toyama (creator of gravity rush, and silent hill under Konami) left in December. He started an indie making a silent hill type game and commented that gaming has become bigger and the audience wider and to make the kinds of games he that find it's audience rather than appeal to everyone, he had to go that route. A polite way of saying Sony won't make it if it's not going to sell 10 mil in a week.

Nintendo isn't even going for blockbusters now. They have masteres social media viral phenomena and just make trends. I almost prefer Sony's route, though i don't like that either.

MS of all companies has been the only "major" company filling that space with battletoads, ori, The Medium, etc. It's so weird. Indies just don't have to budget to put out that "AA" tier, and majors dont want to. And that was always the best games.

@WiltonRoots this time it doesn't require a $40+ accessory that's sold out in every store for a year other than buying it in a bundle with Sports Resort. And it's not on a console where the average player age is over 65& under 10. . Of course it'll outsell the original.

This was the only one Zelda game I owned that I didn't bother to finish.... And I finished The Adventure of Link.... More than once.

Breath of the Wild has sold 22+ million copies and is by far and away the best-selling game in the series, selling 2.5X more than the next best-selling entry (Twilight Princess).

There is a huge audience of people who were introduced to Zelda through Breath of the Wild and are now looking for another 3D Zelda experience while everyone waits for Breath of the Wild 2.

@NEStalgia I miss the “AA”. Some of my favorite games came from that tier. I miss when Squaresoft had Mana, Saga, Bushido Blade, Final Fantasy Tactics, and weird games like Parasite Eve, Xenogears, and Brave Fencer. Then everything became about Final Fantasy.

The problem I have with this isn’t the pricing. It is that Nintendo is going to look at the release schedule and count this as new content. From the gaming aspect, I really don’t care, as I have tons to play on this system as far as indies, 3rd party and other platforms. But I would like some new Nintendo stuff. That’s why I bought a switch. I think we are going to mainly see ports and remasters for a while.

This is a good game, I really enjoyed and finished it. Better than Twilight IMO, but not as good as ocarina.

I won't be double dipping, unless my kids are really keen to play this.

It definitely has some BoTW elements, just with smaller linear levels.

Hopefully the controls transfer across well, as it was heaps of fun to hold the sword "Skyward".

@tech7 Heh, I bought the ps5...... And I'm using it to play gravity rush 2....... . Which it unfortunately didn't get any enhancements. I was surprised, a recent poll on PS for what game people wanted to see receive a boost patch, gravity rush 2 was, i believe #2 right behind tlou2, and shockingly, above hzd.

Same for me. I've bought ps for all those Japanese mid tier games that had higher production values then a lot of Nintendo games and a very different feel. They're all but getting rid of it all and focusing on essentially bridging Sony Pictures and SIE into a big media engine. I can't say i don't somewhat enjoy some of their blockbusters, but I don't love them as most seem to. It's depressing seeing those games as the future. It was the dullest part of the platform.

For now, there's still 3rd party Japanese content requiring a ps, but i do wonder in I'll care about ps6 much at all. Ratchet it's the only 1st party I'm really psyched about. But a few exclusive indies are really appealing to me (stray, kena.) Maybe indies can finally move into that aa window soon.

Switch was in track to become my favorite console of all time when it launched. Then it stagnated. And Sony went after the movie crowd. 3ds now remains my favorite. @NEStalgia Well, while a niche game, gravity rush is well liked by that niche. I kind of preferred the first part, but both were great. But i agree with your whole post.

I hope that the ps brand gets some small crash, similar to the early ps3 days to get Sony back on track.

Yeah the switch is currently stagnating, but at least for me it is still on track to become ny favorite console.

Luckily, many of the games which i enjoyed on ps are no longer exclusive and appear on pc (or switch) and without Sony censorship. And like you said Microsoft could make a move there, the early fail of the xbox one really propelled them forward.

This isn't a Wii U port and it shouldn't be $60.

At least the 3D Mario collection had three full games...

@Zequio You should really finish it. It has one of the best Zelda endings ever...I almost cried. You learn the creation of the actual "Legend" of the triforce and the Master sword

The Dendy was an NES clone and was very popular in Russia, but after that everyone moved to the Sega Mega Drive (just called the "Sega" by everyone here). Then it was all PS and Xbox for the 5th, 6th, and 7th generations. I'm glad the Switch has managed to find an audience though!

But yeah, announcing SSHD during their Direct didn't curb my disappointment for the absence of a proper BOTW 2 update.

But they did announce Splatoon 3, which IMO, saved the entire Direct! 💜💚💛

I love this game. It's one of my favorite Zelda games, despite its lack of difficulty. However, I'm not falling for the same trap again. I paid full price on Super Mario 3D All-Stars since I love 3D Mario games, only to find out that my nostalgic glasses were making me think it would play as good as Odyssey.

Sorry Nintendo, but I'll wait for video reviews on this one before deciding to pick it up.

Dude 60 dollars is not gonna set you back that much. the average wage in us is around 15 dollars. that means 4 hours of work gets you the game.and to most people this game is basicaly a new game. skyward sword sold 3.6 mil and botw sold 20 mil, thats about 16 mil that have not played the game. and dont say its on the wii u because no one owns one.

When they find out how linear the game is they'll wish they didn't buy it. Sale's charts don't tell you return charts.
