If the reveal of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD wasn't the exact HD release you were hoping for from Nintendo, don't worry - as there are apparently other Zelda games returning to mark 35 years of the series.
According to VGC journalist, Andy Robinson, Nintendo fans can be on the lookout for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess this year. In fact, he's so confident, he says it's "100%" happening.
Presumably, these would be the HD versions from the Wii U generation, and they'll be released on the Nintendo Switch.
If you're having doubts about this, it's worth pointing out that Andy (and VGC) was the original source of the Super Mario 35th anniversary collection rumours.
Eurogamer's Tom Phillips has also chimed in with the following tweets, which seemingly support these claims:
Would you like to see the return of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on the Switch? Leave a comment down below.

If its true...my Wii and Wii U collection is getting smaller and smaller by the day.
At this point you only own a Wii U if you just really love Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water and Xenoblade Chronicles X
Hopefully, I would def pick them up. I'm all for getting as much Zelda games on the Switch as possible.
Nintendo gotta rinse that money from the Wii U ports.
sigh
Just whatever at this point.
All $60 a piece of course.
...can y’all finish reporting everything from the direct before you start rumor stirring?
I really want to play wind waker and twilight princess Bring it on nintendo. (It better be bundled to I'm not going to pay 60$ a pice)
We'll see, but this could also be like the reports of Metroid Prime Trilogy HD coming to Switch. I hope that's not the case.
I love them, I'd probably buy them again when my backlog starts to thin. That said "100% happening"? I've heard that before, remember Metroid Prime Trilogy for switch? Persona 5 for switch? Star Fox Grand Prix? EA giving a crap?
It's Zelda's anniversary all year round, not just this week so we're getting way more than just Skyward, just wait for E3 or a Zelda Direct.
I know some people are grouchy about ports but I never got to enjoy these as I never had any (working) system that they're on, so I'm really hoping it's true. It'd be rather stupid of them not to port it tbh. Seems like easy money.
But I'm not 100% sure this is gonna be a thing. Patience will likely pay off
It would be amazing to own all 3 Zelda titles on Switch.
@TheFrenchiestFry Nope. Saves 100's of $ from buying all again on Switch.
So far i only bought Mario Kart 8 twice and it will stay that way.
I own 76 physicals on Wii U, and all the best games including Fatal Frame Special Edition physical and Bayonetta 2 First Print Edition (15.300 copies worldwide).
It's a joke that they're charging the same price as 3D Allstars for just Skyward Sword.
@Clyde_Radcliffe it’s a joke and we’re all the fools because we’re still buying it.
Reminder this only goes up to July for this direct. More stuff can happen later this year. Also Skyward Sword HD was expected for a long time it was the only 3D console game that didn't get an HD port outside those DS and 3DS Zelda games.
Also now you no more have to worry about using the motion controls. Those new joycons will most likely come with a bonus drifting out of the box tho.
@Clyde_Radcliffe They will charge full price for each of all 3 of these Zelda games. You can bet they will cost more than Wii U versions and won't include figurines.
On Wii U these games were cheaper and came with bigger boxes with figurines at no extra cost.
I will only buy Zelda Skyward Sword for Switch as i never bought it on Wii. Skipping the Wii U ports i already own.
@MarinoKadame I wonder what's worst in Skyward. Motion controls or drifting. Either way it moves almost by itself.
@MarinoKadame the official term for those joycons’ drift will be called the Hylian Shuffle.
I hope they make it to the Switch at a reasonable price point though I ain't gonna hold my breath especially on the last point.
Wind Waker is one of my favorite games of all time so I approve of this.
YES. I loved Wind Waker. Haven't played it since the gamecube. I dont know if I'll still like it as much, but I'd like to give it a try in HD with that faster sailing improvement they introduced on Wii U.
If this was happening this would have been announced in the Direct alongside Skyward Sword.
It's not happening.
What? No 3D Zelda All-Stars Collection?
Nintendo, why do you make such confusing and backwards decisions? 😑
@WoomyNNYes I didn't really enjoy Wind Waker on GameCube but after playing it on Wii U, it became one of my favourites. I don't really want to buy it a third time though but I probably will.
@TheFrenchiestFry
I was hoping for a XBX Switch announcement today.
@Ventilator Of course they'll charge full price. Why wouldn't they? Are you honestly so self-centered, or delusional, that you believe people who already bought the HD versions are the intended audience? That they're just trying to bilk us out of more money? The last numbers I saw for lifetime sales were:
Switch 76 million
Wii U 13 million
That means that, even if you assume every Wii U owner has bought one (which we know isn't true, because the people who haven't won't shut up about it), there are 63 million Switch owners who didn't own a Wii U, and haven't had a chance to play the remastered Zelda games. They are the audience that Nintendo would be targeting, not the idiots who bought a Wii U and basically had to be bribed with trinkets to purchase software.
Count me as one of those who really wants this to be true. Also happy about Skyward Sword, as I've never played it due to the reliance on motion controls and my... Not wanting that. But PLEASE I want Windwaker on Switch too
I traded my Wii U with all my games to get the Switch at launch, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting rereleases of WW/TP to replace my traded copies.
If only this was part of the direct then I'll be jumping for joy in Jump Rope Challenge. It's too bad we'll have to do with Skyward Sword HD for now.
The Wii U still retains its value as the best place for Virtual Console support. The Switch Online game catalog and apps are terrible.
M. A. J. O. R. A. P. L. E. A. S. E.
An acquaintance's uncle muttered something that sounded like... "mother... mother... mother..."
Mother 3 remake 100% confirmed.
Where's my acquaintance's uncle's article?
I want a Zelda Master Collection or substantial remasters/remakes at 1080p60. Run the textures through ai upscaling or remodel things. Orchestrated music. Add trophy challenges and make something like Persona’s “Thieves Den” with art, movies, music but set in Lon Lon Ranch. Golden cartridge.
But clearly we are getting some ports of ports and I will probably buy those. I can dream!
Windwaker is one of my most important memories as a gamer. It literally brought tears to my eyes playing it on Wii U and I hope so badly that this is true.
The journalist who claims the usual "100% confirmed I promise" is wrong believe it or not.
Gonna be fun buying all these classics for 60 a pop after Mario 3D All Stars got us 3 classic games for that price.
I think I'll wait until they're cheaper. If these even end up being real of course.
I’ll stick with them on Wii U, thanks. Don’t expect them to be worth it on Switch.
@Yosher That’s why they’ll be limited to 6 month availability, so they won’t have a chance to go down in price.
That's great for me, because I haven't played any of the Wii and GameCube Zelda's.
@Ventilator The WiiU versions included gamepad support so are probably going to be superior anyhow. Unless Nintendo upgrades the Switch versions with some really good QOL features
Eventually the prices will go down, Windwaker is 20$ on the wii u eshop
Nintendo is squandering the Switch's potential just to make a quick buck and to maximize their profits.
Sure, they're a business and gotta make money, but I worry a little for their long-term viability as a company with strong brand loyalty if they keep up this trend of low-effort / high-cost ports, remasters, and half-sequels.
At least in my world that's been the case, but maybe not for others. In just three years time, I've gone from being a huge Nintendo devotee to just kinda indifferent to most of their output
$60 each and limited in a realistic scenario.
No love for the N64 Zelda games?
I’m still waiting for a Devil’s Third port
@TheFrenchiestFry If Xenoblade X gets ported I'll never have to use my Wii U ever again, since all the games I love are on there.
I'm happy I got a new mario golf, skyward sword with standard controls is not bad at all. They didn't even acknowledge Zelda's 35th so that might be a sign they're preparing something else.
Nintendo is full of surprises. We'll probably get a Toon Link trilogy for the anniversary. Twilight Princess will stay behind like Galaxy 2.
It’d be nice to have them on switch. The only Zeldas I have played are Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, A Link to the Past, and A Link Between Worlds. I bought but haven’t played the GBC Zeldas (3DS VC), Phantom Hourglass and BOTW. So if the other 2 come to switch along with Skyward Sword I can pretty much complete my collection. (I know that’s not quite everything. I am not sure I am interested in the NES ones. If I get through everything else and really want to more maybe I’ll buy used copies of Minish Cap and Spirit Tracks, but those are rather expensive)
I just wanted a TP 2 but ik for a fact that'll never happen.
Eh, I don't know if I'd really trust a leak from a guy who apparently can't even count to two, much less three.
#nobadzeldas
@JimmySpades I don't believe those of us who bought Wii Us were idiots, just Nintendo fans same as you. That system had some great games, as is obvious that they are all coming back. It was just woefully under supported and poorly marketed. Also I feel most people who hate on it never even had one, the gamepad was amazing and I thought very comfortable. I have some very fond memories of Affordable Space Adventures with my friends on Wii U. Also drawing comics back and forth on the mii-verse.
I don't understand the disappointment of skyward sword hd it's a better game then breath of the wild. If you can't be happy to get a game on the system but rather have no game there is something wrong with you. Only games really left to rerelease are the two gbc games, minish cap and the DS games.
@CromAstronomy
It was so amazing then the Switch wouldn’t exist.
This is my thought as well. The 35th anniversary for Zelda hasn’t even started yet. I expect a Wind Waker/Twilight Princess double pack in the fall. And maybe the anniversary will end with BOTW2.
@Yodalovesu Same here, I feel that with the release of the Switch, they lost me as a customer. I don't see myself continuing to buy their hardware. If a game or two comes out in the meantime for the Switch that's one thing, but I'm not gonna fall for this again!
NINJA APPROVED
@SalvorHardin Of course it would. There will always be another system eventually. Even though the Switch is awesome it too will be replaced one day. Maybe with something better maybe not.
Never played Skyward sword so I’m looking forward to that, loved Wind Waker so much so bring it on!
If this was happening this would have been announced in the Direct alongside Skyward Sword.
It's not happening.
@YoshiFlutterJump Perhaps. Still I would say to you: Skyward Sword is less beloved than Wind Waker, and possibly even Twilight Princess (and SS is the least successful of the three in terms of sales.) Perhaps they don't want to upstage sales of SS HD?
I... Just... Don’t... Like... Skyward Sword.
I hope they do bring TP and WW HD over. It does make sense for them to do that. That could be the big holiday releases. Full price for each game. It will sell.
I see the BotWSequel launching in late Winter 2022 with a Switch revision. Splatoon 3 in Summer 2022, and Prime 4 simultaneously releasing on Switch revision and next gen. As long as the Switch is selling in abundance for the short term, probably not too many first party games coming for a while.
Absolutely hilarious how people in this comments section are glorifying Mario 3D All stars because it had 3 games and people are speculating Zelda would be sold individually. Forgot about Nintendo “forgetting about” Galaxy 2?! People will never be satisfied.
@Snatcher sure you will 🙃
I'm much more interested in a Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask collection coming to Switch. Or at least being available through NSO (please add N64).
They only announced games for H1. There's still the possibility that WW OR Twilight Princess will release in H2. And as for being sold individually, I don't see why not. Unlike the Mario set, those games were remastered, and even modified (some quests were simplified IIRC). It all depends on if they have something to be released in H2.
@sketchturner
First of all, good choice in your photo.
I would really love for Nintendo to immortalize OoT and MM 3D/ 3DS versions on the Switch/ upcoming hybrid consoles for the next generations so they’re always available to buy and play. Won’t happen, but we can dream.
Admittedly, I gave up on the Wii U after a year of having it so I passed up on a lot of these games even my favorite Zelda game Twilight Princess in HD. All these ports don't bother me since my Wii U is pretty much a Wii that plays in HD for me.
I'm probably gonna skip Skyward Sword. It just doesn't look good enough to me. And the sword swinging... Yuck. But I'm definitely getting Twilight Princess and maybe Wind Waker, if they get re-released.
@NintendoByNature YA We all know I'm going to get it anyway.
@Snatcher so will I. And so will 10+ million people
Here we go again. I have always been a critic about these re releases on switch, but then, i go on right ahead and buy them. Nintendo probably knows this anyway. I am a hypocrite.
Hopefully, it comes with my most favoirite zelda game, ocarina of time of course (even though i do own all three on my belived wiiu)
@TheFrenchiestFry "At this point you only own a Wii U if you just really love Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water and Xenoblade Chronicles X"
And the better of the 2 Yoshi games and decent classic system virtual console games that you can actually buy and own. Dont forget the important bit.
I do believe that they will do this. And I will buy it. And if the games are separate, I will only get TWW.
Only two games from my Wii U collection have I got on Switch. Mario Kart and BotW and I've never played BotW on Switch.
I'm really only hoping for OoT and MM.
@CromAstronomy Are people really labelling all Wii U owners "idiots"?
Twilight Princess was one of the worst Zelda's for me, never played through on Gamecube or Wii ... But i will insta-buy WindWaker Never had a WiiU and played through this game multiple times on Gamecube <3
Nintendo has become such a disappointment. I love my Switch, but that being said, Nintendo is a lousy 1st party dev. WiiU ports is all we get. Weak. I am so bummed out, man. No true Mario Kart for Switch, No news on Botw2, no Bayo 3, no Metroid Prime, no nothing. It's just Mario golf, animal daycare and a big gaping void
I feel that it will happen too
I know a lot of people are a little salty about everything from the WiiU getting ported to the Switch, but you have to remember that a lot of us that have WiiU’s are diehard Nintendo fans. There’s over 70 million Switches and only 12 million some WiiU’s - that’s a huge market of additional Switches and players that could access those great games from the WiiU that most never got to see - for them they are still new games. Plus this way Nintendo still gets to recoup more of those developer costs...
@stiligFox
It's lame anyway. Nintendo made ALL those great games for the WiiU, and now they have no new worthwhile games because everybody's busy doing ports. It sucks.
Will not surprise if Nintendo
1. Sell WW HD & TP HD separately, US$59.99 each.
2. Sell WW HD & TP HD together but only TP on cartridge, WW as download code, will only be on sale until March 2022.
3. Sell WW & TP with The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition, but are all emulated GameCube version, also will only be on sale until March 2022.
@Beatrice thihihihis! Thanks! 4 Swords Adventures could definitely work on the Switch. No need for gba link cables!
If all 3 are bundled together for £50 then it's worth it but if they are £50 each then Nintendo can kiss my ass
I'd Buy WindWaker for $60. Hands down. I'd buy Twilight Princess for $60 if I can use it to give more than 3 hearts to the $@#÷%=× WolfLink Amibo I bought for BotW. $15 and there's no way to upgrade him with BotW? Are you $@#÷%=× kidding me Nintendo?
Por favor Nintendo son los juegos que mas deseo tener en mi Switch 🙏
Tom Phillips tweet above is spot on!
@TheFrenchiestFry & Starfox
100%, like the same journalists that said 100% Metroid Prime Trilogy HD was ready to be released.
Yeah i feel they must have aomething else in the pipeline for zelda's 35th anniversary. If i was a betting guy(and im not as i always lose 🤔) id say we will get a new game and watch with The legend of zelda on it and a bundle containing A link to the past, OOT and WW HD keeping all games Gannon related and 1 from each gen. I cant see them bundling WW and TP together just like the exclusion of Galaxy 2... Hopefully that will come later. Would love to see OOT master quest tho with the flipped world. Oh well, spose we will have to wait and see.
I really hope there are some more Zelda releases. The Skyward Sword announcement was very underwhelming for me.
Nintendo should be exciting us with new games & new ip’s & the rereleases should be the filling in the months whilst we wait, instead we wait for rereleases (that we can play now, just not on Switch) & don’t get any new games or ip’s.
I wish Nintendo would make some real effort in bringing their classic games to the Switch, just like with Links Awakening. Imagine the GBC Zelda games running in that engine or the Minish Cap, Mario 64 deserved a full blown remake as does Ocarina of Time but no, we get Skyward Sword with a plaster stuck over its controls
I think if more Zelda ports/remasters weren't coming, Skyward Sword HD would've been a September - December release.
Well if true why weren't they showing these instead of just Skyward Sword and ending the show on a whimper.
@stiligFox I've no problem with it as a whole but as a Wii U owner its difficult to get excited about playing my Switch when virtually every major Nintendo release is a Wii U game. Without ever buying a Switch I would have missed out on basically Mario Odyssey, Luigis Mansion 3, Hyrule Warriors and Smash (though I have several versions anyway) and that's in 4 years. Nintendo have done a marvelous job in masking their lack of new output I'll give them that
Would not surprise me,and could make sense if they are for later in the year as all the Nintendo stuff except for splatoon 2 would release within the next 5 months
@Clyde_Radcliffe And they will be limited to few months and then never rereleased.
@Ryu_Niiyama yeah it's pretty annoying honestly
@TheFrenchiestFry Nintendo Land is awesome, just like Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and Smash 4 (which have exclusive content over the Switch versions), and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is fun. Plus it has the only English version of Mother 1, and the best version of Super Mario Bros. 3. And the NES Remix games are fun as well.
@TheFrenchiestFry I COMPLETED Star Fox Zero and Guard.
It's always 100%. Switch Pro, too. Annually. And I'm speaking as someone who finds the two games quite likely to come to Switch in the visible future.
Tabloid down a bit, folks. And I mean both the tweeters and NL here. Rumours are worthless garbage no matter how many of them coincide with reality.
Good grief – about 10 hours after the first supposedly major direct in more than a year and we are immediately back to to clinging desperately at rumours.
Just... good grief. This is too exhausting and at this point I don't care – we get what we get.
@COVIDberry Yeah cause apparently they want to be pity
I would like a wind weaker game with the freedom of breath of wild, you can sail where u want from the outset and get in adventures in any order, and I hope they make sailing more fun xxxx
It's harder for me to go back to the older Zelda games, because Botw was brilliant to me. Probably won't pick any of them up.
A Majora's Mask remake or I buy a PS5 !
If they release them, I’ll buy them because I love them. However, I would rather see perhaps Ocarina of time and Majoras mask; the latter being one I haven’t played.
WW and TP have been rereleased already, it would just be nice to have something different.
@KayFiOS I believe so. We have to remember that they may be holding news back for E3.
Haha, yet another release. We had these on the Gamecube, then the Wii U, and now the Switch....
Despite owning all these games on their original consoles, I'd probably still buy them...
Am I remembering correctly that when WWHD was announced, it didnt look, great? But when it released we we're all happy with it?
Feel like thats going to be the same with SSHD, it just looked like a straight cleaned up port in the Direct, maybe it will look much better on relase?
I'll be picking it up. Sure its a bit hand holdy and stuff. But I loved it years ago.
@Ryu_Niiyama These people need the attention and are probably the same people to say that the metroid trilogy is defiantly coming and the switch pro! yawn yawn yawn
Skyward Sword became such a slog near the end that I gave up with it so won’t be buying it on Switch. I’d get Wind Waker in a heartbeat though
The way Aonuma said ”sorry we’re not ready to show anything, but maybe see you later in the year” and how there’s rumors about bringing all of these HD Zelda’s to the console, something about it tells me that BotW2 will miss Christmas 2021.
I kinda feel like they’re holding onto it until they can show it alongside the Switch Pro.
All I want is a proper first party Nintendo game built from the ground up. Is that too much to ask?!
And no, another Splatoon and Mario Golf don't cut it.
I never thought I would have been typing this about a Nintendo console, even during the Wii U era.
I'm gonna have to sit Nintendo out for a while until they're under enough pressure to have to try again it seems. At least I've got a PS5 with the PS4 catalogue to play through, but man, I miss an innovative Nintendo.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
I couldn't agree more with this one, that's one of my biggest problems with it.
Miitopia suffers a similar issue.
@JimmySpades I totally agree with you about Wii U owners not bring the target audience (the fact that these games sell like hot cakes to a new audience on Switch shows that it’s good business for Nintendo and they don’t owe fans from the Wii U era anything anyway) I wouldn’t call those of us who supported the Wii U idiots; after all, we got to play these exact same games years ago for about a third of the price ....
Everyone needs to stop complaining. I love my Wii U but the fact that most of the gaming world missed out on some of its best games is a crying shame. Giving them a bigger potential audience on Switch is only a positive thing. If you already own them and love them on Wii U, you don't have to buy them on Switch. Nobody is going to take your Wii U games away from you. They'll still work. Stop complaining that that the millions of gamers who didn't buy a Wii U now get to play them.
@__jamiie That's not why people are complaining (at least speaking for myself, it is certainly not why I am complaining). You are right, it is great that people can experience these games for the first time on a more available system. Problem is, what do the Wii U owners with a Switch do?
There are little/no actual new games coming to Switch for Wii U owners from Nintendo. Those of us who brought a Wii U when Nintendo were struggling, have been cast to one side and forgotten about. We are paying for Nintendo's own failure to market their own damn console. I brought the Switch at launch under the assumption that new games from Nintendo would be coming to it. Whilst there has been the odd game, it really feels like most of the library came from the Wii U first.
That is what infuriates me. Not that others get to play these games, but because we were the f****** morons to buy these games, there is little else to enjoy on Switch. If people actually brought the Wii U for these games, and the Wii U was successful as a result, we might of actually seen new games, rather than more ports.
I realise I come off as bitter in these comments, especially over the last couple of months, but I honestly don't care anymore.
I would Have rather had a zelda 3d allstars. ocarina, majoras mask, skyward sword. Or a remake of link to the past.
We has WWHD ans TPHD last gen. We gave a remake of links awakening and BOTW on switch.
@MS7000 There were less than 800 games on Wii U and there are over 3000 on Switch. If you can't find something to play then maybe Switch isn't the console for you. Nintendo don't owe you anything for buying a Wii U. You bought the system because you wanted it. You bought the games you wanted and enjoyed them. If every Wii U owner decided not to buy a Switch or sell their Switch because they didn't feel there were enough games exclusive to them, it really wouldn't matter. Switch would still keep selling and nobody would care. The fact is that people didn't buy Wii U and do buy Switch. And in my opinion, Switch has a better range of exclusives than Wii U.
I was thinking that this is probably bs, Then I remembered the shadow dropped 3d all stars last year 2 weeks before release ... anything can happen
Rumour mongering isn't journalism. And folk wonder why they can't be taken seriously as a game journalist.
Report news. Fine. But don't put words into a company's mouth. It's *****.
@GrailUK knowing both journalists in question personally, I would disagree it's rumour mongering. They have sources that will have shared this info and I would 100% believe these claims. They simply can't officially confirm something on behalf of Nintendo, but I trust this to be legit.
@__jamiie "There were less than 800 games on Wii U and there are over 3000 on Switch."
I would argue the number is inflated on Switch due to more shovelware. On the eShop, there are no less than 500 games that always seem to be on discount at extremely low prices. There is a reason they are that cheap as well, and that is simply because they are not good.
" If every Wii U owner decided not to buy a Switch or sell their Switch because they didn't feel there were enough games exclusive to them, it really wouldn't matter. Switch would still keep selling and nobody would care."
You are probably right there. Doesn't make me feel any better though.
I should probably accept that Nintendo today is different from the Nintendo I once knew, cut my losses and leave. It is very tiring to keep waiting on them to expect a good thing to happen.
@antdickens It's not very professional. (But happy they are coming O.<)
These would be very welcome. Sold my Wii U discs ages ago (it’s just an Emulator box now really) so would snap these up in a second on Switch. If they want to bring across HD versions of Majoras Mask and Ocarina of Time and remake Oracle of Ages/Seasons Id buy them too. You hear me Nintendo? Money waiting.
For reference regarding ports....
Switch has over 3000 games.
306 have a Metascore of 80 and above.
810 have 70+.
By my reckoning Nintendo have published 59 Switch games (including Eshop).
12 of those were on Wii U.
4 are ports/remakes from other Nintendo systems.
People are really not grasping why Skyward Sword is either first, or on it's own... and I don't know why.
You'll get your "Triforce Collection" with existing remakes such as Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess... just chill...
Speak for yourself Twitter boy, I didn't buy the Mario cashgrab. Mostly due to lack of nostalgia for it.
@Bentendo1609 The Triforce Collection is just wishful thinking for now.
Come on...give Skyward Sword another chance. If there's one thing the remaster did well on, it's the frame rate. The story is the main reason why Skyward Sword is a great game, so I really hope more people play it.
@roboshort Yeah. They abandoned touch inventory screen in BOTW, so Wii U version couldn't get a better version.
@MysteryCupofJoe Typically, Nintendo doesn't announce remakes at E3. I'm sure there are a couple instances where they did, but more often than not they try to focus on completely new games.
EDIT: I guess they might announce something during the Treehouse event.
Still don’t get why people are surprised to see Nintendo recycling old games.
It’s like Super Mario All Stars, Tetris/Links Awakening/Super Mario DX, the Donkey Kong Land’s, NES Classics on GBA, reams of SNES games on GBA, Game and Watch Gallery’s, New Play Control games on the Wii, Mario 64DS, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Dr Mario on everything, Ocarina of Time on everything, Wii games on Wii U, the Virtual Fricking Console etc etc never happened
What would be really awesome is if they released Wind Waker HD on the Switch and added one of the extra dungeons that never made it to the original release.
As for TP, I'd love to see that on Switch too. And I hope Nintendo secretly has Grezzo working on HD remasters of OoT and MM for Switch.
All the zelda games must be released on the switch including the very underrated four swords adventures of the gamecube, that would be perfect for a multiplayer without the need of the cables.
Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD are the only remaining reasons I wish I had a Wii U
@COVIDberry Some it would seem lol.
@Lony85 honestly with how the anniversary technically start only on the 21 of February I always felt more Zelda ports/announcements could be coming but were unlikely to be announced before the 21.
If anything, revealing. Skyward Sword early with no mention of the anniversary could be a good way to let our guard down and in no way prevent synergy with later announcements. I.e. "1-2 weeks ago Zelda fans learned that Skyward Sword will be coming to Switch. But did you know that this year is also the franchise's 35th anniversary? If you did... you guessed right: more Zelda games are coming!"
Also recall that though Mario's anniversary is September 3, 3d All-Stars didn't release until September 18 iirc.
So there's still room for more announcements. And honestly... keeping something as massive than "zelda anniversary collection might be a thing" off the Direct is a good way to leave more time for other announcements in the Direct and more time later for the large amount of content something like anniversary re-release might involve.
So in a way it was confusing there were no mentions of the anniversary but on the other hand there's some logic in not mentioning an anniversary that technically hasn't started yet.
First skyward sword and now possibly TP? YES
I would think these would be easy games to port since they’ve already “remastered “ them for Wii U but who knows maybe the plan is to keep stringing along these ports to fill in some gaps between new stuff.
Coming for $60 individually? No thank you. Nintendo rips off its consumers so much.
Twilight Princess has slowly fallen down the list over the years in my eyes yet I still bought both that game and Wind Waker on Wii U. I will probably buy both for Switch as well.
@TheUltimateFaker I'd say be patient. Apparently this is the guy who also uncovered that Nintendo would release a Mario 3D All-Stars collection in 2020... which he said all the way back in March: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/03/nintendo_to_remaster_most_of_super_mariors_35-year_catalogue_for_switch_in_2020_new_report_says
And then, because there were no announcements for most of the year, people kept claiming it'd never happened but forgot one crucial part: 2020 was indeed the year of the anniversary, but the DAY of the anniversary wasn't until... the 3rd of September.
And guess what? Come September, on the 3rd of the month, we got the reveal of Mario 3D All-Stars(released on the 18th of September) and Mario 3D World+Bowser's Fury(released this month): https://www.theverge.com/2020/9/3/21418988/super-mario-3d-world-all-stars-nintendo-switch
So it was normal that the year 2020 saw little 35th mario anniversary announcements... the actual anniversary didn't actually start until September(and thus is technically still ongoing until next September)!
So I suspect it'll be the same with Zelda.
Because though Zelda's 35th anniversary is indeed this year, it doesn't actually start until.... next week(21rst of February).
So the truly major Zelda announcements won't start until that day and beyond if you asks me. And Skyward Sword's reveal doesn't neccessarily invalidate that. Recall there was Paper Mario: Origami King announced and later released in the summer well before the 35th anniversary of Mario was even mentioned at all until much later in re: 3rd of September.
@Mamabear Honestly, let's also not forget that like 3D All-Stars(which we knew of from sources as early as March 2020 but wasn't revealed until the ACTUAL anniversary on September 3rd, much much later)... it's kind of pointless to announce "anniversary" announcements until, well, the actual Anniversary.
Sure this month Zelda celebrates it's 35th anniversary... but not until next week on the 21rst of the month. And since that's the start of the anniversary, that means they technically have the biggest part of the year for announcements for that matter.
I mean, if you think about it Mario Golf is nicely timed because Mario's own anniversary won't be over until next September so it could technically be considered a "Mario 35th" release itself.
We've got from February 21rst this year until February 21st in 2022 before we can truly claim whether or not Nintendo truly failed to release anything for Zelda's own 35th.
Skyward Sword was the only one not to receive an HD release.
Even if WW and TP come to switch, I am not gonna expect them for a good long while.
But I will wait until the weekend so they can announce something.
@MS7000 I was going to respond to your woefully ridiculous "nothing new for Switch owners" narrative, but @__jamiie already took care of it, as well as I would like to have. It's also disingenuous to discount shovelware on the Switch but not on the Wii U, which had a worse problem with it than the Switch, because instead of having a bunch of developers flocking to it because of the potential audience, it had a bunch of developers flocking to it because they could get approved by a Nintendo desperate for content. Do you know who the top third-party developer/publisher on the Wii U was? RCMADIAX. Let that sink in. After Nintendo, the most prolific producer of content for the Wii U was R C FUC!ING MADIAX. (If that name isn't familiar, just google him; I'm sure the NintendoLife article about his asset flipping technique will be one of the first available.) The only reason he was able to survive was because there were so few games that his shovelware didn't look that bad, because there were no good games to compare them to. So please, put away that tired old narrative of the Switch offering nothing new; most of the old stuff was garbage.
@JimmySpades Oh I am familiar with the name. Heck, I am fairly sure he was a user on here at one point. No clue if they are still lurking around or not.
I am glad you found something new. I wish I could see what you could. But I can't. You call it a narrative because you see something I don't. From my point of view, it is the truth. I am not saying it because I want to be spiteful. I am saying it because quite frankly, I am sick of Nintendo not making new games.
Really love that every nintendo system since the gamecube gets twilight princess haha
@Ludovsky I think they will probably announce them after ss is released
@TheFrenchiestFry Xenoblade Chronicles X is a system seller for me, so I still don't have the Wii U regret.
I feel 3 Zelda games in a year is just too far fetched (and I'm not including Age of Calamity DLC). Yeah, we got the Mario Collection, but it was all in a single game. It would be weird if they were released separately at $60 each. Maybe down the drain they'll port them, but I feel that it's just too much for a single year.
@Ludovsky wow, thanks for the well-informed reply! Yeah my line of thinking is that it's only the second month of the anniversary year, we've still got plenty of time for announcements.
I take things with a big fat grain of salt so I don't get too disappointed when it doesn't happen, but it's sounding more and more likely.
I sure hope they are right. I never had a Wii U and really want to play the HD versions of these games.
@TheUltimateFaker Plus while it's this year, the actual anniversary day isn't until Sunday(February 21).
Honestly, there's enough anniversaries lined up this year I get the feeling any big announcements involving their respective franchises will be specifically kept for those days rather than general Directs so as to not overshadow the Directs' stuff.
For example I'm not expecting Metroid anything until it's actual anniversary on the 6th of August(so, quite a way to go... and more room for other stuff in the meanwhile).
Big ones(that I know of) this year are:
Zelda(February 21)
Pokemon(February 27. They already got a digital concert lined up too)
Dragon Quest(May 26)
Metroid(August 6, as previously said)
@MS7000 The way I see it.... my brother doesn't have a Switch but neither does he own a WiiU(the WiiU we had was my own when we were roomates).
He did show interests in some WiiU game and but is also is... kind of a cheapskate, so he never got one for himself but we had discussions that he could be interested in mine.
So stuff like 3D World gives me an excuse to finally gift/sell him my WiiU by getting the Switch port for myself since it was one of the only game I had left I'd still cared for. The thing also had Wind Waker on it so I might try to hunt down a copy or download Twillight Princess on it(while the eshop still stands on that console) as a bundled-in bonus.
Like, my grandparents also had a NES that they never upgraded for newer console but which they kept for kids during gathering. And being the stuff they had, it still saw plenty of use from kids during those gatherings even if we all had SNES/etc by the time.
Not saying this offer you any solution for re: your WiiU because it's all about games -you- did purchase, but it's one I'm considering for mine, especially as my household has grown a bit cramped to easily even keep the WiiU and all it's peripherals(like that massive gamepad)/cables around.
@YoshiFlutterJump Would anyone buy one of the most hated zelda games if wind waker and TP (both cult classics) were announced along with it? The answer is no. the wii u hd games will come, but Nintendo isnt dumb enough to make fans pick between 3 at once knowing skyward would sell basically nothing.
Fingers crossed this happens as a compilation (even if it's one box with two cartridges inside). I will totally buy these games again to have them on Switch!
@Ludovsky That is a very kind thing of you to do for your brother if that is what you choose to do. At least it will go to a good home.
But I like my Wii U still. It works great for the games I brought and for slightly better looking wii game image quality. Heck, free online too, good for Mario Kart 8, which I am considering ditching NSO for now that Splatfests might be over in Splatoon 2. Switch at this point in its life, is still inferior to the Wii U, which is impressive.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Well that, and the Virtual Console games that aren't from NES/SNES.
@LordTism it doesn't matter of a vocal minority of the fanbase hates the game. It'd still sell regardless since it has "Zelda" in the name.
Besides, isn't this about as much as they normally do for a Zelda anniversary? All we got for Zelda's 30th was Twilight Princess HD, and all we got for the 25th was the original Skyward Sword. They're not doing any more for this anniversary besides Skyward Sword and possibly BotW2, and if they were, they'd have announced their plans already.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Nintendoland? I know, it's just me haha. Love the pick up the fruits game for multiplayer with non-gamers & gamers alike. Not that I have any multiplayer action during covid season...
I actually had a dream about double dipping for The Wind Waker HD, last night.
It's such a timeless classic, with the art style and massive ocean map. Also, IMO, it's aged better than the rest of the 3D Zeldas (BOTW has just raised this bar so high that it's very tough to go back).
Day 1, for me, 💯
Good news! I'm not willing to buy a Wii U just to play these two games, but I'll gladly buy them for the Switch!
I feel like it will be 2 full price releases;
Wind Waker Trilogy with WW, PH and ST
Second Trilogy with OoT, MM and TP
Thats if it happens at all. I’m not the biggest fan of Breath of the Wild so would like them to release an original style Zelda for the Switch at some point. I feel like the system is running out of time though. Not from a sales perspective but just age and the inevitable replacement we will get (hopefully its backwards compatible!).
I can't be the only one who feels KIND OF cheated by Nintendo with the Wii U-Switch ports :/
If these come to Switch this year, then BotW2 will miss Christmas, won’t it..? :/
Skyword Sword is ace. A worthy Zelda.
Would love Windwaker and Twilight Princess HD on the Switch. Surely will happen. Twilight Princess I have played/completed 3x on 2 different systems now. Even went about halfway through on the GC, so a little less interested in that tbh.
Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time have to be based on the 3DS ones surely. Would be difficult to go back to the legendary 64 versions tbh.
@TheFrenchiestFry Not shifting fron Wii U anytime soon and I don't bother with portable gaming which is what the Switch really is for.
I'll purchase a Switch Pro.
Skyward sword was an underwhelming reveal. I want Windwaker on a handheld so I can relive phantom hourglass looks and feels with better graphics. I just like toon link.
Windwaker was amazing up until the whole “find the random stuff in the ocean for 7hrs” bit. Hoping they just rip that out for a re-release.
I’d really love to see a GB/A compilation including both of the seasons titles and the minish cap (which imho is one of the most underrated and forgotten titles)
@Freddyfred so is Skyward Sword.
All I’ll say is that with the Wii U we would regularly see things like the “Summer of No Games” droughts. It appears that 2020-2021 will be remembered as the “Years of the Remake” for Nintendo. I really hope this is a sign of the times and not a new trend for them.
My copy of Skyward Sword still works and an HD facelift is not going to address the problems I had with that game. The controls were bad because of the motion, but the gameplay was equally uninspired. But if I am honest, so are the other two (Wind Waker and Twilight Princess). Twilight Princess is probably the best of the three as it wasn’t mostly filler (WW) and gave enough nostalgia nods to Ocarina of Time.
However that is mostly my opinion and not worth much.
guys take it easy this nintendo direct 2021 was only first half the other half must be the other 2 zelda games, prop slow because the corona crisis in 2020 and we only 2month in 2021
@Fleischyy remake of minish cap and oracle of ages/season should be epic @Fleischyy
@TheUltimateFaker I don't think people mind about ports at all. I would be happy for them to port all their classic games to the Switch. What I really hate is lazy ports that are almost 0 effort and have been surpassed by the community years ago and then charging full price or near full price for them.
Skyward sword is a prime example. Unless they are charging £20 or less for it they are taking the piss.
Will I buy Wind Waker a 3rd time? Maybe. Depends on what they add or change this time around. Right now the Wii U version is my favorite thanks to the QoL changes and touchscreen controls. We shall see.
@LordTism no zelda games are hated
You don't need an inside source to tell you this is happening.
@SalvorHardin $80 in CDN. Why does Nintendo make me hate them so much.
Nope, not again. I’ll wait until we have an account (ala Xbox live) that allows you to port over games you’ve already paid for... twice
played both games.. never finished them..it would be a pleasant surprise
$60 for lazy ports wohoo
Years later I am still waiting for the HD Metroid Prime Trilogy some journalist assured us was coming.
Ok here me out so Nintendo might remake games that have not been remade so no windwaker twilight princess or OOT or MM I think 4 swords adventure because Its fit for the switch maybe like two player instead of four but it seems logical
@TheFrenchiestFry Umm Devil's Third says hi. 😄
....And then demands you fork over 200 bones.
@Snatcher 100% I will only consider it if bundled at $60, if that's the price for each of them I will pass
I've been waiting for Wind Waker since I bought my Switch in 2018. My love for WW stems from my childhood, and with my Gamecube long gone, along with what ended up becoming of the WiiU, I never played it since a kid. The amount of freedom and the open-world WW offered was truly something marvelous back then.
Though his rumors are indeed pretty reliable, I won't get my hopes up until it gets officially announced.
And the game journalist was 100% wrong haha. It's September now and there is zero sign that this even exists haha.
Really Nintendo totally wasted the franchises birth day
