As frustrating as it is I always say Nintendo knows what they're doing. They always do things their way regardless and it works for them. There's a very specific reason why both gamers and the press all snap to attention whenever Nintendo has anything to announce. Makes way more splashes than anything Sony or Microsoft make usually.

Aaaaaaand we're still waiting for some news on Bayonetta of the Wild Prime 324. Maybe the title for the next Zelda would be nice, unless they announce 6 months later that they started development over from scratch... I'm going to jinx, it aren't I?

With such a bare 2021, sometime soon would be a good time to share an update on upcoming games.

The only reason I can think of for not announcing release dates with a good bit of notice is that the dates just aren't totally concrete yet. Covid has messed everything up and they must not want to commit to anything that might end up changing. If covid didn't happen there is no way we'd have nothing on the slate after April, particularly given the Switch's current momentum!

They should just focus on fixing all their broken controller designs, from joycon drift to abysmal dpads.

Leave the game design to the people who’s customers desperately need working controllers. Maybe let someone outside the mario factory test it first...maybe play it for more than 8 hours...maybe push more than a jump button occasionally.

Lol, it’s been four years...time to release a functioning Switch already.

I am expecting 2021 to be 2020 part 2, in the sense of not really much of anything coming from Nintendo... except Wii U ports, you know, games that weren't good enough at the time apparently but everyone wants on Switch... because being on the Switch somehow makes them better?

I don't get why people get so anxious, waiting for a big direct that isn't really necessary anymore.
The "2-3 month before release announcement" has been working for them, with very focused marketing on the next titles, and for us that have solid release dates (once they are uncovered).
I actually think it's a very smart and solid strategy now that I'm used to it lol

B) from an incredibly simple perspective, if 10x the people bought a Switch than a Wii U, the Wii U ports are new to them. Mario Kart 8 is the number 1 sold Switch game.

It's almost like this same thing happens around the earnings reports. Nintendo shows sales data, people ask about games, Nintendo doesn't announce any and then panic ensues with articles like the ones earlier this week. Then, a few days later, we get articles like this one because it's obvious Nintendo will release games in a year. Since that doesn't get clicks, gaming sites like to wait on reporting that part.

It's always the same story, yet people act like this time it's new (every time this cycle happens, in fact).

They don’t want sales cannibalizing each other. So we can expect news in march I think. With extra info on Monster Hunter Rise as a bonus (2nd demo?).

If you read between the lines he definitely mentions Pikmin 4 and WaveRace 4 (how dare you forget the GameBoy original) releasing this year. 100%

Ever since The Game Awards 2019, aka the event which showcased the Xbox Series X, Nintendo seems to have changed their marketing strategy, focusing more on quality of their announcements than quantity, which is what Nintendo Directs were. As much as I hate shadow-dropped trailers because of all the spoilers that I get, it seems to still work as well as a Nintendo Direct, so I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to hold off on this year again.

I think we've been given more than enough hints that we won't be getting anything BotW2-related in 2021, except maybe a trailer in Q3 or Q4. Logically speaking, we wouldn't get BotW2 this year anyways. Are we forgetting that Age of Calamity was just released in November, not to mention the rest of the 35th Anniversary would need more breathing space?

Again, this is not really that out of the ordinary. Mario 3D world, BD2, monster hunter, and pokemon snap. How is that bare...? We’ll know about more releases later. People have really started panicking about no directs

@GannonBanned I am aware that Wii U ports would be new games to Switch owners who never owned a Wii U. My problem is these ports are not meaningfully changed from the original release, and yet they sell a lot better than they did on Wii U. Where were all these people with the Wii U? If the Wii U's games were so fantastic, why didn't people buy a Wii U the first time to play the games?For a console which "had no games", everyone seems to clamour for it's library.

Sure, the Switch was probably marketed better (easier to explain the gimmick), not to mention quite a lot of the audience could be getting into games for the first time for the Switch. It makes business sense. But from my perspective, the Switch is essentially a portable, but inferior Wii U (no virtual console where you own the titles, paid online, similar library).

I just want new games. Instead of Pikmin 3, why not Pikmin 4? Mario Kart 9 anyone?

If you enjoyed the Switch in 2020, more power to you.

There is just no real pressure to release or announce. Announcements of upcoming games are to spur excitement in hardware purchases. There is no slowdown in hardware purchases. Releasing games is for profit, and the first party games have been hugely successful at the rate they are releasing. Having breathing room means each can get attention.

The only people that are antsy are those that are dedicated gamers that play constantly and pay close attention to every new opportunity that comes up on the Switch. That is a very small subset of Nintendo's customers.

If there was a PR battle to win, or a need to get new eyeballs on the Switch because the installed base was too small — remember Wii U? — then, there would be reason to make promises publicly.

There is just very little reason to do that for Nintendo right now. We should just go play a game and be patient. There are plenty of games. If you don't think so, you may want to broaden your genre horizons a bit, or focus on another platform for awhile. Nintendo is doing fine.

@MS7000 so, I can answer your questions anecdotally.

The Wii U is the only Nintendo Console that I ever passed on. I had absolutely Zero interest in the tech gimmick of the big screen controller, I was nonplussed by the launch slate, and was particularly perturbed with the initial marketing I saw for it being somebody playing Mancala on the tablet while somebody else watched TV next to them.

Mancala is a game invented back in classical antiquity for playing in the dirt with stones or shards of pottery. I’m not going to pay hundreds of dollars to replicate that. No regerts.

My office had a normal tech millennial culture and bought a Wii U for people to play - I hated the feel, but Mario Kart was fun.

With that being said, I’m still a huge Nintendo fan and sad that I missed out on some Mario and DK Games that I would have OTHERWISE played if I was interested in owning the system they were on, so I’m happy to shell out $60 to own them on the Switch, a return to form that I love playing.

I’d pay for Perfect Dark, 007: Nightfire, a Double Dash remake, or a VC of Zombies Ate My Neighbors no question and I still own those on their systems, but I would like to have them on my Switch, too

In other words, more "nothing" like 2020, where they only produced 2 new games (3, counting Koei's Hyrule Warriors).

There is only one console now. They aren't supporting both a handheld and a home console. What the heck are their teams doing?

@Crockin that panic goes back to last January (2020). I don't expect it to let up until there is another "general" Direct.

Forget about Bayonetta 3. Metriod Prime 4 and look forward to 1-2 switch 2. Astrids playroom and Picross 17.

I actually don’t mind Nintendo’s current approach; announce games that they know the exact date within a reasonable time frame. I can’t stand when games are announced with a year or more window and then get delayed again and again.

We hate it, but the current model works for Nintendo.

Every announcement is now an event. Each game receives its own isolated coverage and hype cycle. It doesn't compete with other upcoming titles, because it's the only title we're aware of at the moment. We also don't run into situations like Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, or Bayonetta 3, for which announcements were made years in advance and — well, we've seen how that's turned out.

Nintendo know they're Nintendo, so they don't need to work the hype machine the same way as other developers. They have the strongest IPs in the industry, so a few months is enough time for them to hype-build.

Also, with the Switch being massively successful, they probably don't see the point in pressuring their development teams with fixed deadlines and public scrutiny. Directs weren't only about promoting the games; they were also about promoting the platform. And on that last point, the Switch doesn't need more help. It's doing just fine.

Which is not to say I like it, of course. I loved Directs. I love knowing what's coming up far in advance. But I get Nintendo's business rationale.

Well, at least it sounds like they have something planned for later in the year.

I can't blame you particularly for the launch window, I will admit, it wasn't the greatest. And I hope you get to enjoy the Wii U games as much as I did when I first played them. I just wished there was more for me to get excited about.

I think they are holding back game announcements for the switch pro launch. It will be here is a new game and look how much better it is on the pro. Either that or they got nothing. You can never tell with Nintendo.

Even Nintendo's most ardent defenders have to see that their in-house, first-party releases (especially original, exclusive-to-Switch) have slowed dramatically since the Switch's first and second years. Christmas 2019 saw Animal Crossing slip into the following year, leaving Luigi's Mansion 3 as the lone "big" first-party title to headline their 4th Quarter offerings. And despite the amazing success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which launched last March, the rest of Nintendo's "big" first-party games for 2020 were Paper Mario: Origami King (the only original game for the rest of the year), Pikmin 3 Deluxe, and Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary 3D Collection. And starting off 2021 we're getting yet another Wii U remaster, Super Mario 3D World, a new Pokemon Snap game, and mum's the word beyond that.

None of this signals doom and gloom, obviously, but it's a pattern that's uncomfortably familiar (remember the last couple of years for the Wii U, with those months-long gaps between major releases)? I think this is a major reason why we haven't seen a major Direct in over 500 days; they simply haven't had enough projects ready to show. I do expect that we'll be hearing something from Nintendo regarding games for the rest of 2021 fairly soon (March 31st is very likely an important date, not only because it will close out the Mario 35th Anniversary promotions, but also because it's the end of the first quarter). I'd say that at least one major Zelda 35th Anniversary announcement (perhaps another compilation) is almost a given, and hopefully BotW 2 will make it by the end of the year. Of course this is also Metroid's 35th Anniversary, and while I honestly don't expect Metroid Prime 4 to make it this year, that franchise too could see a remaster or even a compilation of sorts.

In any case, que sera, sera.

People will never understand that just because something isn't announced, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

@Jake_qwerp They might do it to boost sales. If you thought Nintendo was only releasing this one Mario game to hold us over for a while, you would be more likely to buy it.

On the other hand, if you were on the fence about the game and Nintendo announced another BETTER game that was coming out around the same time, then you would be less likely to buy it.

@mariomaster96 I don't think it is that Nintendo doesn't like Bravely Default II. I think it is a good game from a good franchise but it has an audience that is a bit smaller than Mario and Monster Hunter and it doesn't produce the large sales numbers Mario and Monster Hunter does. Nintendo knows this so they chose in their statement not to acknowledge Bravely Default II but they know like we do it's coming and its audience is going to be excited for it. Out!

@Rika_Yoshitake I'm talking about how Nintendo did it early in the switch's life. If you don't like Mario 3d world, you really have nothing else to look forward to other than Pokémon snap.

No new system, no new games. Have they completely stalled out or are they just good at keeping secrets?

I am already losing interest in the Switch. Have a few games on the backlog, but beyond that, cautious about buying anything in my wishlist (which again contains 1 game by Nintendo - BotW2).

@GannonBanned It was a fantastic third person Bond game, starring the likeness and voice of Daniel Craig, and because it was made by the amazing Bizarre Creations, the driving sequences in it were sublime. I loved it on my XB360 and highly recommend it, it's not too expensive either.

@Rika_Yoshitake Sony only have revealed 2021 games so far. And if we assume God of War gets delayed to early 2022, it's not that bad really. There's a ton to look forward to, so it's a good strategy. With Nintendo there's nothing on the horizon, except Zelda and Metroid, and who know when they are ready.

I want a re-worked Star Fox Zero that offers a chance to play without motion controls. All those beautiful environments and being forced to twitch play and look around through a little screen to aim at specific things. Zero was cool but it was slightly underwhelming in replayability for me. I still play 64 on 3DS. It’s just so damn good.
Anyway, I’m beating a dead horse.
Looking forward to whatever the big N releases this year.

@Mando44646 very true. At the height of the ds and wii era it felt like there were new games coming out every 1-2 months on both. Not all those were triple A games of course but so many games came out that kept offering so much choice. Another Code, Warioware, Meteos. It was endless.

Yeah, it really bothers me that other Zelda games don't get as much love as Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity has further shown that when compared to Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition.

@aaronsullivan It's the "focus on another platform" part that's frustrating. My Switch backlog is razor thin at this point, while my other platforms backlogs grow. It feels like the late Wii years. "Why do I own this console, again?" I know that will change at some point, and I know this year SMT is something I look forward to, but otherwise there's been little of interest for 2 years and nothing of interest planned ahead short of the SMTs. When they finally do announce new games it'll be swan songs for a generation on the way out the door instead of a celebration of the best years of the system, while the system spent its best years coasting on a few evergreen titles.

I am in the weird end empty corner of people who love the Switch, but don't care too much about indies and Nintendo first party games. This leaves me with almost nothing anyway. So I am used to frustration. But personally, my march looks pretty great with RBI Baseball 21, Apex Legends, Densha de Go, A-Train, Steel Titans 2 and Amalur.

This adds literally nothing to the subject. I just realized that after typing it. But now that I put in the work I am gonna post it anyway. Maybe somebody is happy for me that I have the first "great month" as a Switch owner.

@BenAV I have to agree. Honestly, waiting years and years for every game you hear that sounds interesting is exhausting. It's refreshing to hear about a game, see a real gameplay trailer the moment it's announced and then know it'll be out in 2-6 months, instead of the all-to-common several years away, cinematic or header only sort of stuff most studios do.

And that marketing focus on upcoming releases you mentioned surely ups sales as fans are focused on what's coming out now rather than saving cash for unannounced games 6+ months out.

@MS7000 Nintendo put out two Wii U games all year. A remaster of Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which is a good game. And a remaster of Pikmin 3, which is a fantastic game. Beyond that, they also released a major story expansion for Fire Emblem: Three Houses, several characters for Smash, two major Pokemon Sword/Shield expansions, four eShop exclusive titles (Kirby Fighters 2, Pokemon Cafe, Good Job! and Jump Rope Challenge), the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon remake, the Xenoblade remake, Clubhouse Games, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the original Fire Emblem from the Famicom, Super Mario 35, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, as well as more DLC and in-game events for a number of their online titles and Fitness Boxing 2.

@Jake_qwerp I know what you mean, and if you're not interested in Pokemon Snap either, then you don't have anything to look forward to. This is exactly the thing, not everyone likes everything. It happened in 2018 if you were not into Smash, 2019 was much better, 2020 and beyond looks barren except some TBA titles.

@Yanina Here's a group you don't read about every day. You've an interesting way of looking at the matter.

Reading all these responses (for months now...) only reinforces my thought that "AA" franchises like F-Zero, Wave Race, Kid Icarus and the like should be rekindled by Nintendo and other platform holders. I've argued with @Ryu_Niiyama about the "business case" for AA games, but here, she's right - Switch has a broad selection. Patience is a virtue.

@COVIDberry Just to clarify I don’t argue with anyone. Discuss or debate, sure, but this is a fansite with no impact on anything in the world of gaming; I would not waste my time arguing. Which is also why I only responded to you about that a few times and kept on with my day on others.

Also at the risk of being dragged back into this convo; shotgun firing games isn’t going to get the desired result either (and it’s not like Nintendo hasn’t been busy with releases last year). The software attach rate last reported is 8 games (as I stare at my 400 plus Switch library). So gamers as a whole are not buying a ton of games and many of them are buying the standard evergreens and popular titles (this also takes place on the twins but for more 3rd party games than first party) that people like to complain about but still own.

Throwing out a bunch of games to pack a genre or resurrect a genre when you have a line of hits that are selling is not the best ROI that a company, especially one that relies on first party revenue as Nintendo does, can make.

Fan desire should not be wholly ignored, but it needs to be distilled...and even then should be taken as a suggestion. They have analysts that look at market trends. That is, should be and is what informs them most.

I feel the theme park and other entertainment avenues (barring COVID19 messing up everybody’s plans as nobody could have predicted that) is the way that Nintendo can capitalize on old gamer nostalgia rather than using dev resources to pump out games that aren’t a sure thing. Remember, Nintendo is an entertainment company that happens to leverage video games currently as its vehicle of choice for brand recognition and consumption.

@COVIDberry It's also confusing because another company puts out one, possibly two games in a year and if even one of them is pretty good, consumers are like "wow, Company B really nailed it this year, can't wait to see their next game in 5 years!". But Nintendo puts out 17 games ranging from ports/remakes/remasters and eShop titles to full AAA releases, dozens of big DLC packs, hosts special events, drops tons of merchandise, etc and people complain it's an off-year with no content.

Yeah I know. It's just that the hardware made me interested to get back to gaming since I was a teen. I don't have a TV (nor do I want one) and take a lot of care about not having too much stuff around me. So the handheld made me get it and his slick black design. Now I am suffering trough all it's shortcomings though. Because in terms of games I would be more happy with a Playstation or a PC - But the hardware is just not up my alley anymore. Switch rocks. I just hope for more games I am actually interested in.

The handheld and console teams are now all working on switch titles and we're getting less content than when they were two separate teams.

Nintendo does have a history of one-per-console games. But we've been told that the Switch still has about three more years to go. That's a bit too long to go without any more releases. Keep in mind that they are doing another Zelda game on the Switch.

@someone11110000 Zelda is different. Nintendo does zelda many number of times on one nintendo platform.

They only do 1 per console games when it comes to multiplayer games not single player.
