Square Enix has just lifted the lid on its next turn-based tactical epic, which has the working title Project Triangle Strategy.
Looking like a cross between Final Fantasy Tactics and Octopath Traveler, this Switch exclusive is expected to launch in 2022, but a free demo will be available to download on the eShop later today.
Here's the PR:
Project TRIANGLE STRATEGY (working title): In this game that continues SQUARE-ENIX’s celebrated legacy of tactical RPGs, battles take place on terrain with different elevations. A character’s attack range is determined by their location and their equipped weapon, so it is imperative to survey the battlefield before acting. Additionally, the decisions made will affect how the story unfolds and which characters will join your cause. Project TRIANGLE STRATEGY (working title) launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch in 2022. A free demo for the game will be available to download in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch later today.

Honestly would've preferred Octopath 2, but I'll give the demo a shot.
Octopath Traveller: Three Houses
This game looks gorgeous, though.
Don't see why SE can't just do a new FF Tactics but looks ok I guess
Screw Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, this will be my 2D RPG fix on Switch. Love Final Fantasy Tactics and Octopath Traveler so will definitely keep an eye on this as well as trying the demo.
Downloading the demo now. Looks interesting!
This game visually looks great, but what kind of name is project Triangle Strategy? I hope it's not the final name.
@drewber2635
It is the new Final Fantasy tactics. It doesn't have it's real name yet and at the very least is the spiritual sequel.
Best part of an incredibly underwhelming direct.
Looks great. Hope they come up with a better name.
@HotGoomba A working title name!
I predict it'll have Final Fantasy Tactics in its actual title when renamed.
@HotGoomba It said working title.
This was my favourite announcement by far. Although considering the direct as a whole there wasn’t much competition. I didn’t play Octo path but the tactical battle system looks really good. Voice acting sounds miles better than Bravely Default.
@PBNightmare @Dethmunk @Julien I was implying that I was hoping that it was not the final name, but I added that to my comment to avoid confusion. Thanks for pointing it out!
I'm grabbing the demo. This looked Game of the Direct for me (outside of Splatoon 3 which is moons away!)
If it has the depth of Tactics Ogre (particularly, classes and outfitting of soldiers), I'd be down for it. I always preferred the aesthetic of Tactics Ogre to Final Fantasy Tactics, and this appears to resemble the former more, so it could make a tempting prospect for me.
@HotGoomba It's just a project name similar to Project Octopath Traveler. Either it's gonna be change once the game is complete or they kept the name like OT. Triangle Strategy might also be a reference the weapon triangle in Fire Emblem or it could be referencing the multi story path of the game.
Best part of the direct imo, downloading the demo now!!
The segment dragged on a bit but the game looks really good. Hopefully they don't stick with the project name for the final release like they did with Octopath Traveler.
Looks dope. can't wait! But in all seriousness, was anyone else put off with all the titles announced for second half of this year or 2022? Wasn't this direct supposed to be about the first half of 2021?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Yeah, I added that to my comment.
I'm in love with the Octopath art style, but I sort of hope they don't use it for too many more games. It's gorgeous, sure, but the novelty will wear off eventually.
Anywho, I'm totally down for giving this a shot! I'm hoping it can live up to its predecessor. (Is it a spiritual successor to Octo? I'm not sure)
lots of Square Enix games
@Rosona that’s like, your opinion man.
This direct was awesome for me. So many many games I’m now looking forward to.
@BenAV Square are on a roll on selecting names that could potentially detract from sales. I thought the switch Bravely Default was a remake of the 3DS game at first. The naming convention is somehow more confusing than the Xbox names.
With this and the Mana & Saga ports Squeenix hard carried this direct for me. Can't wait to give Octopath Tactics demo a try.
@TheUltimateFaker They could use it for a third time and I'll be okay with it but yeah as long as they don't over do it unless they're actually planning to give us an Octopath Traveler 2 or something like a Final Fantasy V or VI remake.
@Chowdaire well, not many games were shown for 2022? Only splatoon 3 and this game, and this game only because it has a demo which released now.
What else? No more heroes III for august...? That’s about it, am I right?
Sign me up for whatever crazy Special Edition Square-Enix is cooking up!!! (But please work on that working title first.)
Gotta be honest this is the ONLY game on the Direct I got excited about..
@meeto_1 Haha true. Bravely Default basically getting two sequels in Bravely Second and Bravely Default 2 is pretty confusing for anyone not paying close enough attention.
This was the only genuinely exciting new announcement. What is going on with Nintendo?
Can’t believe that is the working title for the game.... looks a bit like 3 houses.
This is my number 1 hyped game right now. Me being a massively huge Stella Glow fan, I've been itching for another tactical RPG done at that level of care and quality.
This is looking amazing. I'll preorder this the second I am able.
EEDIT: I really enjoyed Octopath but couldn't bring myself to finish it. It started to really slog for me about halfway through and... eh.. I never finished it. This though. This looks amazing and fresh. I want it.
@Friendly Summer isn't first half, July is officially the start of the second half of a year and A LOT of announcements are listed as summer or later. I would have to rewatch the complete direct but the only new games listed before July that were of note (That I can remember) are: Miitopia, Famicom detective thing, Mario Golf, That Danganronpa thing and Ninja Gaiden.
Don't get me wrong, between those games and Bravely default, ghosts n' goblins, monster hunter and Pokemon Snap I'm pretty content with the switch for the moment. But again, Nintendo specifically said this direct would focus on first half of 2021. Maybe they're talking business calendar which I suppose counts since that goes into September but I'm still a bit confused by the messaging.
This game looked awesome!
Best reveal of the Direct.
@Chowdaire maybe they’re following the chinese calendar. In that case July would be part of the first half of 2021...
And as I said, only three games are dated after july. A few for summer, but not later.
I dunno. i wouldn’t be salty about a month disparity.
What counts to me is: We still have ALL the september, oktober snd holiday games to look forward to. The times that usually the big hitters will be released. Pokemon? Breath of the Wild 2? Bayonetta 3? Odyssey 2?
@Julien It'll probably just drop the Project and stay as Triangle Strategy. That's what they did with Octopath.
Nintendo is not messing around with getting JRPG's on Switch. I'm here for it.
@Friendly My biggest concern is that all the titles listed as "summer" or later such as Fall Guys, Outer Wilds, Neon White, etc could all get pushed back due to covid or just game development in general these days.
Again, I'm not upset just confused. Actually, now that I think about it, the DLC for age of calamity is perhaps the biggest indicator of things being delayed. If you look back at other Koei Tecmo games for nintedo - OG hyrule warriors, Ultimate Alliance 3, Fire Emblem Warrios - DLC is usually out within a few months of release. The fact that wave 1 doesn't drop until almost 8 months after launch makes me realize things are not going according to plan.
It is what it is, just baffled by the messaging on Nintendo's part.
Looks real legit.
@Chowdaire fair enough.
I don’t think they could have stacked more games in the release window from now up to July to be honest.
Look at what is releasing. That is a massive amount of games.
It’s also pretty logical that games arw announced for july. With E3 being in June you want people to already be prepared for what’s coming in the next month so that the E3 presentation can focus on what’s coming out in and after august.
@Chowdaire look at the round up btw.
Most of the games announced will release before July:

This is my goty 2022 (unless BOTW2 comes out next year) hands down. Calling it now.
@Friendly Ok, there's a decent amount there.
I'm rather pleased with what I saw today. Heck, I might be the only person on planet earth who was most excited about that Famicom Mystery game and World's End Club!
@Chowdaire i don’t know them but felt intrigued.
Are they any good?
I have high hoped but Octopath Traveler was a pretty big dissapointment for me. I hope this game will have a lot more depth to it.
I'm very excited for this game.
@Friendly I have no frame of reference for the Famicom games either, just excited by these types of games. lol.
As for World's End Club, Its made by the Danganronpa people. Having something from that team has piqued my curiosity immensely.
This looks very promising.
Now, this looks extremely interesting! There was no quality srpg in the line of Ogre/Final Fantasy Tactics for quite a time!
@drewber2635 Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favourite games of ALL TIME. If this is the next best thing to a full fat sequel, I shall take it with pleasure. I wish they would just fulfil just a little fan service but I can't complain. It's Square Enix, its fantasy and it's strategy.
Project Triangle Strategy was the game announced on Direct that excited me the most, not least because I love tactical RPGs; judging from what was told about the plot, with a focus on choices, it must be more of a spiritual heir to Tactics Ogre than to Final Fantasy Tactics. It looks very promising. I'm downloading the demo (1.6 GB! It must have a lot of content).
A turn based strategy in the spirit and style of Octopath? Sign me up. But unlike Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy doesn't really roll off the tongue the same...
Still going to be a day one buy.
This is right up my alley. Downloading ASAP.
Just spent an hour with the demo, it's great! The voice acting is a bit naff, but you can mute them and just play it like a classic trpg. Finally something new to be excited for on the switch.
This looks so cool. I gotta get the demo tomorrow.
Hmm...
Consider this on the radar! I also hope to give the rough feedback demo a try, though I doubt it'll be right away.
This looks awesome, but still holding out hope that Octo is still getting a direct sequel
I think the Octopath aesthetic is a more natural fit for a tactics RPG. Not a randomly oversized boss sprite in sight either. I'm interested
@everynowandben this is octopath tactics
Easily the best announcement of direct. The only bad thing about this game is that it's coming in 2022 and not RIGHT NOW. I NEED IT NOW.
Best announcement of the direct for me. Can’t wait to try the demo but shame it’s releasing next year...
This looks great, shame not out for a year though
Best announcement of an otherwise pretty disappointing Direct in my books, really excited to check it out the demo today!
@SegaBlueSky Same. The only game that matters for me as well. Skip Monster Hunter, Zelda port, Splatoon 3, etc etc.. No Metroid news. No BOTW2 news. ..Switch is the only console / handheld with the most ports / remakes in the whole video game industry!! We want NEW AAA games please!!!
@Rosona I actually played the demo and I was very impressed. Will be keeping my eye on this one for sure
@nkarafo Yeah it's a total port machine, I love it. I can play Super Mario Galaxy, then switch to Lost Levels on Super Mario All Stars on the SNES, then play some Spyro 2, Mario Bros. Arcade, Crash Racing, Mario 3D World, Diablo 3, Doom 2016, Final Fantasy 7, Gals Fighters NGPC, Ripley's Believe it or Not Pinball, Katamari Damacy, Link's Awakening, PixelJunk Eden, Bit Trip Beat, Toad's Treasure Tracker, Resident Evil 6, Dicey Dungeons, Commander Keen, Witcher 3, Mario Kart 8, Minecraft, I think it's all just incredible. These are all some of the best games ever made, it's awesome to have all these on one console, especially a portable hybrid like this. We want it to be the console with the most ports / remakes in the whole video game industry!! The bigger the library the better.
And on top of that, there are thousands of games available, and every week there are so many new games coming out that people can't even keep track of what's out anymore. I'm sitting here waiting for Enter the Gungeon 2, but I have what feels like infinite other games to play in the meantime. I don't even have time to play all the demos I got, and Super Mario Maker 2 keeps me plenty busy with it's infinite entertainment and Nintendo puts out a new game every 3 or 4 weeks so I've never considered being bored before. I wouldn't mind if they put our more games at a faster rate, but I'll never have time to play most of them.
The one game that surprised me very pleasantly Several interesting Square games, but a Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre game like this would be amazing if the quality is up - which it looks like.
Would buy an Octopath Traveler 2 even faster, however, so hope such will come in a few years as well.
Other games in direct: I'm glad about Mario Golf getting a story mode, but won't get my hopes up for anything close to the old GBC (or was it GBA) mario golf/tennis semi-rpgs with this one (or golf story which was decent). Will await reviews.
@Tyranexx I feel its more like the Battle/Tactics Ogre series. Which also means I’m getting clobbered lol.
@Ryu_Niiyama I've heard of Battle/Tactics Ogre, but the series is outside of my experience. It's an excellent series I'm told, but one I haven't gotten around to yet lol.
Either way, Project Triangle Strategy looks like a fun game! Even if the working title is a bit odd.
