As if the awesome-as-heck Bowsertron 5000 wasn't enough to get us hyped for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Nintendo has revealed that the Captain Toad levels featured in the game will now support multiplayer.
Of course, you might remember that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker actually started out as a series of isometric minigames found inside Super Mario 3D World on Wii U. The concept was so good that Nintendo decided to turn the idea into a new game in its own right – one that has now been released on Wii U, 3DS and Switch.
Originally, in 3D World on Wii U, the Captain Toad levels were single-player only, but that's all about to change when the game gets rereleased on Switch; Nintendo has confirmed on its official website that the Captain Toad puzzle stages will now support up to four players. Wahoo!
If you missed it, make sure to check out our gallery of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury screenshots, as well as our experiment looking into how the game has been sped up on Switch.
Have you already got your pre-order in? Let us know in the comments.

We all need more of the Captain in our lives
A very very welcome addition indeed!
Can they just make a sequel to it already.
With improved graphics, improved controls including longer long jumps, faster movement/climbing speed, multiplayer captain Toad, new photo mode, online play and Bowser's Fury addition this is almost more of a remake than a straight up port.
Nobody can accuse Nintendo of being lazy this time around (though I'm sure some will try, plus say it should cost 5 bucks!) and as someone who never owned a Wii U but LOVED Mario 3D Land I couldn't be more hyped for it!
Captain knows what’s best
I won't be picking this up because I've already played it to death, but for anyone on the edge, playing this with my 2 brothers is some of the most fun I've ever had gaming!
I'm looking forward to hearing how the handful of levels with touch-control platforms will be handled.
And unless the Switch Pro Controller has a built-in mic (I believe that it doesn't), I'm also curious how the platforms that had you blowing on the mic to move them in a couple of levels will be handled.
I am looking forward to experiencing this game with multiplayer.
Slightly off topic, has anyone played the DLC to Captai Toad Treasure Tracker? Is it worth getting?
Luigi Cat looks like he has some sort of disease
@Clyde_Radcliffe I totally agree with you. this is almost like a brand new game for me. All the new changes and new content.
Ahoy, The Captain!
But will it unlock the 3D World bonus levels in the Switch version of Captain Toad?
This is exciting indeed! But I wonder how this will work. It might be too packed for 3 players or more.
@Gamer_Griff yes. 4 new levels and 18 new challenges. and only 6 bucks. the new challenges seem like new levels. I say go for it. I think you will enjoy it.
You and the captain make it happen.
@Gamer_Griff oh and co op play on all levels too.
@Clyde_Radcliffe its still a port of a 8 year old game. Sixty bucks is ridiculous, esp when every other studio has the common sense to charge budget price for their ports with far more substantial additional content for games that cane out in 2017.
Hopefully Captain Toad for Switch gets an update around 3D World Switch's launch to add in the 4 3D World levels that were cut and replaced with Odyssey levels.
@Grumblevolcano they also changed the ending to tie it in with odyssey for some reason. Now that 3d world is on switch the original ending is perfect
The only reason other publishers charge less for ports and "older games" is because no one will buy them if they don't... people (including myself) readily pay higher/full prices for "old" Nintendo games.
Therefore, why would they charge less?
Anyone saying that the pricing is wrong/ridiculous/unfair needs to take a course in economics.
@Atariboy
They did it for Captain Toad on the Switch already. Playing handheld you still just touch the platforms, and if you're playing in docked you have a cursor for the Joycon or Pro Controller gyroscope to "click" on platforms.
They removed the need to blow into the microphone because, as you said, the Switch controllers don't have one. I'd have to get out my Wii U copy to see exactly what levels that affected, but after playing through Captain Toad on Switch I didn't even notice the absence of those parts. I think they just turned those parts into more touch blocks? Maybe someone else knows.
This is where they go back and put the four Sprixie Kingdom levels back in Captain Toad on Switch (perhaps 3DS too?)...
Very fun game that I never beat on Wii U. I've considered a double dip, but I have too many games in the backlog to justify a purchase of anything for a while.
I remember playing through these and saying, "This would make such a fun standalone game!" So glad they did. Great, casual sub series.
@Malones2792 then don't buy it. Simple.
Aaaaw GREAT news! Anything that helps make Captain Toad more popular is a good thing!
@holygeez03 Malones2792 And most of those games were originally released on massively successful consoles like PS3 and Xbox 360. It's understandable Nintendo would want to try and recoup development costs etc after the Wii U sold so badly.
sooooo excited for this!!!! loved it on my Wii U and can't wait to play it again
@Gamer_Griff @michellelynn0976 Speaking of that DLC, it just went on sale yesterday! I bought it finally.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
It’s also about maximizing the bare minimum while their actual new game output is only slightly better than the Wii U, they use these ports as crutch because it turns out they never actually solved the problems of modern game development that they frequently talked about during the Wii U years.
So this is apparently also ONLINE multiplayer and co-op, right?
Yessss! Abother reason more to buy the game!
Wow, that is great!! ^^
Really the Captain Toad's scenarios are very interesting and challenging.
I'm just wondering if you have a SM3DW save file on Switch, will it add the 3D World levels back into Captain Toad that were on the Wii U version?
Yeah it was pretty annoying because I play 3D world as a Multiplayer game so either only 1 person got to do the levels or I had to go back after playing the normal levels with my friends.
this really is the best wii u port theyve made!
well I love this game so I hope it sells well so we do see a sequel... far too many negative comments about this game when it released on the switch.... although it may have just been poor timing on its release when people were desperate for a all 3d game.
This game officially takes the cake as the best Wii U port to date
@Bon_Kurei Bowser's Fury isn't worth it?
On the 3D World website scroll to see the characters. Look at the text straight above Mario’s head. They said Rosaline instead of Rosalina
Does this mean that we can have the original levels based on 3D World back in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Switch?
Neat, though it does nothing for me. As a solitary player, I completed the Wii U original entirely in single player. 5 sparkling stars on the save file complete. It was certainly a process, but I look forward to doing it again on Switch. I just really love this game!
Who will 3p and 4p play as?
1p and 2p are obvious (Cap Toad & Toadette)
But others???
Toadettette???
Toadalina?
Toadmeister?
the Toadster?
Toadio?
Toady?
;P
@redpanda0310 I hope Toadette appears in the multiplayer in her Chief form from Mario Maker 2's story mode. The hard hat would suit it!
@Clyde_Radcliffe it’s lazy in that they are treating this almost as a full release and have not really announced much for 2021. While I think that Bowser’s Fury is a nice touch to make those of us who owned the title on the WiiU buy again, there’s a part of me that wishes thi was a longer full length adventure sold as a separate title. I think I would rather have had something like the DLC for Luigi’s Mansion. Something with a lot of replayability
@Radbot42
Yes! Exactly. We need a new one. Some of us bought it at launch for Wii-U six years ago. That's a long time (I didn't get the 3DS or Switch versions). I remember having the hardest time back then to track down a Toad amiibo to play the extras.
@redpanda0310 the captain has a full brigade of toads already, they can just use those.
@Grumblevolcano yessssss. Thank you for saying this. It bothers me that those levels have been removed and nobody seems to be making much noise about it. Hopefully now Nintendo will release them as free dlc.
and. I do not know why the american website does not have this but when you go to the european nintendo website of this game, you get a more detailed explanation of the game. one paragraph says when giant cat mario defeats fury bowser, he goes back into the water and MORE ISLANDS OPEN UP. so the game is not 10 seconds long like some of the whiners are complaining. I say about 10 hours long. and that is not that bad. but the game has more than one island.
@Radbot42 a good sequel to Super Mario 3D World would be Super Mario 4D World, in which Mario must use a rewind feature to complete many maps.
@Keithustus so like Mario x Braid? That’d be cool!
Get the Super Mario 3D World levels back in Captain Toad on the Switch!!!!
@DavidMac That’s precisely what I was thinking, in 3D.
@holygeez03
Go easy on that nail, you keep hitting it right on the head
3D World on Switch just keeps getting more and more essential. Absolutely can’t wait for 12th of February. Bring it on, I say.
@Eel Very true. Maybe Toadsworth will get a turn this time around.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Oh good idea!
HELLO! MY NAMES TOAD!
My wife and I played the Wii U to full completion. Its very underrated by gamers who dont get that its the first time weve been able to play a Mario in coop style.
I for one am excited about Captain Toad supporting more people as it was always a fight as to got to do them.
Bowsers Fury looks like an intriguing a mishmash of odyssey with 3D World.
Im a bit nervous about physics adjustments since i felt 3d world was already perfect albeit on the easy end.
However I cannot wait to dig into the game again. Im really hoping therell be a new secret character or final level.
@electrolite77
The market is never wrong.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Sounds like they made it easier cutting any challenge, As for improved graphics, it's minor and one would expect optimisations considering 3D World was Nintendo's first move to HD.
However I easily recommend it as it is the best 3D Mario game on the market.
