Welcome once again to Box Art Brawl, our contest to find out which retro gaming cover is best from two or more global variants of the same game.
Last time we enjoyed the silence of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence on the fifteenth anniversary of the DS port. Japan took just over one third of the vote — and Europe grabbed almost a fifth — but it was North America which broke the (deadly) silence with an exalted exclamation having topped our approval poll with 46%.
We just can't get away from Capcom, it seems, because this week it's the Final Fight series returning to the Brawl with a game which turned 25-years-old this month. Yes, SNES brawler Final Fight 3 is taking on the might of its Japanese alter ego, Final Fight Tough. Europe and North America are teaming up for this Duel edition, as both territories' covers are extremely similar.
We watched Mike Haggar and the crew duke it out back in Box Art Brawl #11. Japan won that round, but let's see if it can go two for two...
North America & Europe
The North American cover features classic street-brawlin' art in the late-'80s/early-'90s style. Chains, knives, baseball bats, brick walls, rippling torsos, barely-contained cleavage, grimaces, ludicrous haircuts, the cop from the Village People — it's got the lot.
It's all nicely rendered with warm colours, and it's got a kickass logo, too. The European version shifts the framing a little, but it's otherwise almost identical. Perhaps our beat 'em up nostalgia is getting the better of us, but it's a strong start from the West.
Japan
The Super Famicom version — known in the region as Final Fight Tough — uses totally different art against an ethereal blue background. A similar splashy logo occupies the top third, although a faux-gold strip runs along the top of the box behind the Capcom and SFC logos (yes, that mottled effect is part of the print and not a crumpled bit of cardboard).
We like the composition, but the figures don't feel as lush or substantial on this cover. Obviously, they're rendered in a different style, but when viewed side-by-side we can't help but prefer the ensemble image used in the West. Still, it ain't up to us, is it?
So, you've seen the two final fighters, but which one will be the last one standing? Pick your favourite and hit 'Vote' to let us know below:
Certainly a Tough choice, eh?... EH?!... Hello?...
Feel free to let us know your reasoning, or go back to whatever it was you were doing before you voted — that's fine, too. Have a great week and we'll see you next time.

First time I can’t decide between them!
(Though I did go with US/Europe)
I voted USA version for better character design looking.
Japan version looks like amateur design.
USA version is the best one it looks so much more idk the word for it but its that.
Prefer Japanese artwork, always love the Japanese famicom box design as well.
I actually voted Japan. You’ve got to love the anime style.
I dont like the graphics on the west cover, or the orange everything. But as @Anti-Matter pointed out the japanese one looks amateurish. So west one gets my vote.
I voted for the North America & Europe one.
I can't tell what the woman is supposed to be doing on the Japanese one, doing a flip? Photo bombing? Running? Falling?
@Tourtus a combination of tripping and punching I think xD
It's the first one for me, it looks more like the game then the second one (which looks more like a street fighter game. Which this definitely isn't! )
That really buff muscle guy on the US/Europe box is hilarious. His chest and arms are bigger than his whole head. Better than the cheap Jap one though.
I like the reverse flame kick on the Japan one, lol. If only the character design was a tad more polished. The NA & Europe one seems well put together and quite professional. However, I went with the Japan one because the freebird way of potraying the art is endearing to me for some reason.
This time Japan doesn't take the cake. xD The EU/NA cover looks much better overall.
Easy choice this time. NA cover, as it reminds me of Street Fighter (and even a bit of Smash) and therefore more what a fighting game cover should look like.
Definitely the Japan one. USA has the better artwork, but there is just too much orange. The Japan one has more color variety.
Man, I chose Japan because of how cheesy the NA/EU box art looks.
Merci beaucoup Nintendolife for another great Box Art Brawl. Keep em coming.
They both look ehhhh to me. I loved the Final Fight series. I wish they would make a proper anthology of them with remastered graphics that you could toggle between, and then release a true successor.
I'm digging the anime like vibes for the Japanese cover, unfortunately though, that isn't enough as I voted for the North American/European box art.
I typically prefer the Japanese art style on box art like this, but I'm not fond of the composition or the designs here. The art on the western cover isn't bad and I think it succeeds more overall so that got my vote.
I usually prefer the anime stylized Japanese art of games from this era (rather than the westernized art seen over here) since it more closely resembles what the devs themselves likely intended, however, as others have pointed out Japan's art this time around simply isn't that good (the head/face of the guy with the blond hair in particular looks goofy), so this is one of the few instances in this scenario where I voted for the US variant.
Final Fight 3 : Battle for the Blue Oyster
North America, in this case
This was a hard one. I don't really like either of them.
The guy in the american one looks like he'll start singing Remember Me at any point.
I can't vote on this one, they both look pretty terrible.
NINJA APPROVED OF OTHER COVERS
The Japan one looks like a high school kid's fan art.
I hope with the success of Streets of Rage 4, Capcom will want to throw their hat in the ring with Final Fight 4. It could happen!
Box Art Brawls Current Total:
Europe: 26
Japan: 29
North America: 31
Would be nice to have a Switch collection with Final Fight 1, 2, and 3. Either make that available as a package, or put them on Nintendo Switch Online service for SNES library. Logically speaking and looking at Capcom’s catalogue, the Viewtiful Joe series should be on Switch as well, as the arcade gameplay is similar to Final Fight.
The Japan one looks like fan art. Something seems off model about them
i like the japanese box art more
I can't believe how poor the illustrations are on the Japanese version!
Dude, his pecs are huge! I'm gonna go with Japan.
