Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection hits Switch on February 25th, and in the run-up to its release, Capcom has been publishing a series of developer chats on YouTube.
The first one focused on the origins of this new title in the long-running series, while this latest video goes into a little more detail on the art style used in the game, as well as Arthur's special abilities.
Producer Peter Fabiano reveals that, despite the game's 2D gameplay, it makes use of Capcom's RE Engine, which is used in a lot of the company's big 3D games. Using this tech, director and series creator Tokuro Fujiwara has fashioned a 'picture book' visual approach, where characters look as if they're jumping from the page of an illustrated novel.

WOW the RE Engine is quite versatile to make games like that.
I like that 2D approach a lot and the art style is fantastic, but I hope in the future they also create a full 3D experience. Dark Souls comes to my mind
Day 1 buy for me, can't wait.
PS5???
XBOX S X???
They are both lost.
2021 belongs to Nintendo.
Just January and we expect already 3 great games and more are on the way.
@BoostPower You might give Maximo on the PS2 a go in that case, which is basically Ghost n Goblins in 3D.
It looks fun but visually it doesn’t look great. It’s a minimum effort that doesn’t dazzle. I’m sure the illustrators did all they could with the time and budget they had
@JustMe Yep, they look kind of cheap to me.
Any sign of a physical release?
I really want to buy the game but would love a physical copy to add to my growing switch collection.
I think the visuals are making some great call outs to Edward Gorey and other illustrators of the time. I'm really looking forward to playing the damn thing.
I wasn't sure about the visuals at first. Not usually a fan of the rigged 2D animation in this type of game, but now that I'm seeing more... I actually really like it. If you compare it to the original especially, it really does match up — especially if you don't think about the later games in the franchise.
There are many nice details and flourishes — again, that I didn't notice the first time — that help raise this above some lesser uses of that type of 2D animation.
I'm actually digging this quite a bit, now. I really like the stage that deforms (like Super Ghouls and Ghosts) but slanting too. So you are climbing ladders at a funky angle. The awkward angles are part of the entire art style and it actually affects the gameplay.
When i first heard about a Ghosts and Goblins remake, I was really excited. That said, the art style for me is a real turn off. I see what they were going for with the storybook illustration idea, but the way the characters are designed, rendered, and animated are a miss for me. The whole game looks like a flash or mobile game to me.
@Tokujo It will happen in Japan.
This should have been done in Cuphead style visuals, that would have been amazing!
@YANDMAN you mean 30's style cartoon visuals?
This looks fantastic to me. Love the art and flow of this
Hmm I'm tempted but if I'm spending that much I would really prefer to buy physical. I may hold off for a while.
Also, Arthur looks like he's running in quicksand, like the 8-bit Arthur would crush him in a footrace. I'm worried that lack of lateral speed would really annoy me before long.
@BoostPower Yeah, the art style of this new Ghosts 'n Goblins game reminds me of the children's book Where the Wild Things Are with the mix of Susumu Matsushita style art as well.
Still hoping for Physical cart...that would make my day..
@BirdBoy16 YES
@JustMe
The original was trashy already. The joke is that the knight was always moving strangely, that is, he was faster than his surroundings. Still, he didn't get really far ahead. Isn't it absurd?
Look at this gameplay video from the old arcade game:

@Tokujo Same here. Hope a physical copy is made.
