Remember when we recently reported on the fact that the Game Boy was getting a brand-new RPG title in 2020? Well, if that brought a smile to your face, then you're going to be very pleased to hear that the plucky little console (and its more powerful sibling, the Game Boy Color) is getting another new release very soon.
Team Coria is working on a 2D-sidescrolling adventure by the name of Coria and the Sunken City, a title inspired by the likes of Wonder Boy in Monster World and Ys. In this adventure, heroine Coria "explores the caves, forests and mountains of the mysterious Agoe Island, uncovering an ancient mystery sleeping beneath the waves of the sea."
The team has released a lovely-looking cinematic trailer – which you can watch at the top of this page – as well as a playable demo that you can experience on original hardware (using a flash cart) or in your web browser. The objective is to release the final game digitally and on a physical cartridge.
Here's some PR:
Follow young adventurer Coria on her travels across the mysterios island of Agoe! Find new skills and weapons to help you on your way, overcome obstacles, beat ferocious enemies and bosses and uncover an ancient secret!
+ Explore a vast open island world
+ Meet friendly islanders who help you on your quest
+ Fight Bosses hiding in the temples under the island
+ Unlock and upgrade your weapons and skills
+ Discover hidden secrets
+ Uncover the lurking horror threatening Ahoe Island

The animation should have a small disclaimer "Does not represent actual game footage" 😂
The screenshots look real good, though
The Game Boy will never truly die.
"inspired by Wonder Boy in Monster World and Ys..."
Take my money! This is basically my dream combo... unless someone figures out how to make a game "inspired by La Mulana and Super Mario Sunshine" lol.
Why are companies still making Game Boy games!? It would also be cool if there was a Switch version of this game when it comes out!
the game boy still is getting games for 3 decades wow that's amazing
I ordered the reprint of Shantae, so I actually have a new GB game coming.
Anyway, I tried the demo, and... eh. Level design is boring, and literally every enemy only drops health. Not impressed so far. Maybe it'll improve over time, though.
Hi Ralizah, We're working hard on improving every aspect. Health-drops aren't balanced yet and we simplified the level-design for the demo - in the final game, there will be more different paths and opportunities to use the abilities learned so far.
I have no interest in playing a game on a tiny screen instead of my TV--but since I pre-ordered the Analogue Pocket complete with dock I will no longer have to make that concession, so I might buy this just on general principle.
Wonder Boy and Ys are two of my most treasured game series, so I will most definitely keep an eye on this one
@TeamCoria Thanks for the response!
Will y'all be releasing another demo later on that's more representative of the final build?
love the color palettes used, I'll definitely try it out
@Ralizah Yes, we most probably will. This first demo is a bit of a lifesign and proof of concept - there's a lot of polishing to be done, but we know that.
Thanks for all the kind words here! That's a great, great boost for the team!
I'm loving the GB coverage
Coria looks like a young boy in the promo art. Wish devs would stop making girls look like boys. It's like they have to be masculine for them to be allowed to be the hero.
Modern female empowerment = make them look like dudes, so dumb.
@Facelord doubt the game is a political statement
Gives me hope that the true spirit of GAMING is indeed alive and well. First I heard about "where is my body", then "Dragon Born" and now this. I'd been saying for years that it would be wonderful if Nintendo decided to reissue the Gameboy, both the original green screen wonder and the Gameboy color, to original specs of course (with a few MINOR improvements) and give some physical cartridges some reissues. It would not only make many of us old ppl smile, buy maybe bring some new smiles along too. Now that 3ds is officially discontinued, (BUT NOT DEAD!) maybe now would be the time to bring back the original handheld portable?
@RPGamer
Whaha, you must not be old like us. It'll sell, really well. I know sounds odd, but look at the funding startup for the other 2 Gameboy games I had mentioned, it surpassed the goal instantly and kept going and going and going. It was crazy
ah yes the repetitve trope of 'let me chop off my hair, and dress like a guy to be this cool edgy knight' - i..instead of just kicking butt with how you look like, really self concious at that point if you're going hawl butt like that lol.
cute 8bit game though just not my tea
I like how you say Wonder Boy inspired, rather than Shantae inspired. Credit where credit's due.
oh wow an indie game with a HEROINE because jesus that has never done before. EVER!
Eh another generic indie game to pass on yawn
I played through the demo, and I literally have been on the end “credits” for half an hour, just to listen to the awesome soundtrack! That’s how amazing this music is!
