Nintendo has shared an updated list of the most-downloaded Switch eShop games of the month across Europe, this time covering October 2020. This time around, an indie favourite has managed to secure top spot.
Yes, beating Super Mario 3D All-Stars to the punch this week is the wonderful Hades, which also happened to be voted as the Nintendo Life eShop game of the month back in September. Minecraft is also still going strong just below them, with the rest of the list being made up of familiar names.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- Hades
- Super Mario 3D All-Stars
- Minecraft
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- FIFA 21 Legacy Edition
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Pikmin 3 Deluxe
- Stardew Valley
- The Survivalists
- Pokémon Sword
- Minecraft Dungeons
- 51 Worldwide Games
- Ori and the Will of the Wisps
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

Pikmin Free done awight like lads
Wow Minecraft Dungeons
Fifa still in the top 5. Amazing!
Really glad to see Hades doing well, considering it's out of nowhere stealth-drop. Also nice to see Pikmin 3 making it in the top with only 2 days of availability during this month
Good to see the best new game of 2020 on top of the list.
Sad times when you see FIFA 21 in the most downloaded list. Stop funding these legacy editions
A reskin of Fifa with no additional features, Animal Crossing and MarioKart (seriously, who doesn't already own these games at this point) have all charted higher than Pikmin 3.
Maybe Nintendo needs to rethink its pricing structure on wii-U ports to encourage sales.
Stardew Valley. I wonder if ConcernedApe could just live on the money from that one game for the rest of his life.
I just love the mix of big and small games on this list. What a variety of genres, as well.
@ChaosBadger777 One of those games you mentioned is also a full priced Wii U port though.
@ChaosBadger777
Should also apply to remakes like Link's Awakening. How do they expect a remake of the fourth main Zelda game to compete against the gargantuan that is Breath of the Wild?
What special cases are supporting EAs complete mockery of gamers? Very very sad
@BenAV thats true, but MarioKart is also a much more popular IP than Pikmin.
BoTW was also a Wii-U port that has sold much better on switch
@NathanTheAsian one of the reasons I didn't bother picking Links Awakening up, its far too short of a game to justify paying so much for it.
@ChaosBadger777 So the problem is more with the popularity of the game itself rather than the fact that it's a Wii U port being sold at a high price point. Instead of making it cheaper they should have just made it a trilogy with the first two games included, that would have likely attracted a lot more interest than the third game alone.
Breath of the Wild is a bit of a different beast as it launched on the Wii U and Switch simultaneously.
@aaronsullivan I think Stardew Valley has to be the biggest success story in gaming for Eons. Eric Barone really must feel proud.
@BenAV it was also the lack of online multiplayer that stopped me from buying it. Whats the point in including multiplayer when it stops those off those of us with a Lite from accessing it?
@ChaosBadger777 BotW is NOT a Wii U port because it released on both platforms at the same time and was developed for both. A port is developed and released on one platform and then afterwards a different version is developed to work on the other system.
Dungeons? Wow, didn't see that coming but Hades was obvious
@BTB20 BotW was a wii-U game that was held back to release as a launch title on switch. Look at the crafting menu, that was fully designed to be accessed on the touchpad while playing, instead of having to keep pausing to go into a menu.
I wouldn't be surprised if the sequel isn't released until Nintendo's next console launches considering how many units it shifted.
All great games worth your time
@BTB20
Technically speaking, it is a Wii U port, but it's the only one to gain a simultaneous release with the original Wii U version. A port doesn't necessarily mean a game had to be released on the original console first.
High digital sales of the insulting FIFA 21 legacy edition are even more painful because there is no way to resell or refund it.
@NathanTheAsian When they started developing it for the Switch the Wii U version wasn't finished either, that's why I wouldn't count it as a port.
@BTB20
But where does it say the game was developed specifically on the Switch? The game would've been finished on the Wii U first, considering how the betas at gaming conventions were all showcased on the Wii U. If the game was developed on the Switch, then it would run at 1080p docked, which it doesn't. The game was finished on the Wii U and ported over to the Switch.
Got hades in the sale, after an hour I was like yeah looks good,, sounds good , plays good but don’t understand what all the fuss was about. After 6 hours non stop playing I think I have a problem. It’s superb! Love god mode ! And been to shops today to buy Pikmin 3, I’m good for the lockdown xxx
@NathanTheAsian
Maybe you're right. But it wouldn't run in 1080p on the Switch anyway since Super Mario Odyssey also runs in 900p when docked, just like BotW.
That Hades physical announcement is gonna be a sweet moment...
Tempted to get FIFA 21 just to piss people off. 20 million people have bought a Switch in the last year - are they not ok with getting the latest FIFA as their first version?
@gcunit I only got FIFA 20 when it dropped to $15 on a sale. No way I'm paying full price for such lazy effort.
Pikmin 3 is doing well considering it was only out for a couple of days.Having played the new content I'm glad a double-dipped.
I want to get Hades but need to finish No More Heroes first.
@PushMyGran86 sorta agree, but it gives me hope for a release of Madden....
Really sad people got scammed into buying Fifa 21
Europe and their Fifa
@mrmememan You and @GrandiaJet make a good point about Pikmin only having 2 days. And sure those are probably where the bulk of the sales come from, but had it released October 1st, I expect it would have at least made 3rd, likely even 2nd.
Anyway, we can hope it at least cracks 3 or 4 mil worldwide, including physical, by the end of the Switch’s life. (Any predictions?)
The Pikmin series making it to 7th most downloaded of the month in two days is really quite impressive. I'd say it'll be the best selling of the franchise, and if not, it'll be right behind the first game.
@BlubberWhale It would be great to get 3 mil sales. From what I can find the main entries sold less than 2 mil each. Anything that makes Nintendo show more interest would be great.
Clubhouse Games still has legs. That's good to see! I love these little experimental bits Nintendo puts out every once in a while. That's what makes them Nintendo.
Pikmin 3 deluxe being only out for 2 days of the month and still reached 7th on the list? That's actually pretty impressive. You gotta factor in how long it's been out to make a true comparison.
@Grandiajet Yeah, upon further reflection, I kinda realized even 3 million is a bit optimistic for the series. We should probably consider 2 a success for a port like this, and with not too many years left for the Switch. But who knows, we’ve got a pretty massive install base now, so 3 million might be feasible.
@Digitaldigdug Exactly. I don’t expect any huge numbers, but people who are using the word flop are being a little short sited. As I just commented, I think 3 million sales worldwide could be feasible by the end of the platform’s life, but even 2 would be a respectable success given its port status.
If anyone is still on the fence about getting Hades, I can vouch that it’s INCREDIBLE.
I’ve racked up about 120 hours so far and I’m still not bored of what most would say is repetitive gameplay.
The interactions, banter and commentary between all the characters and the narrator is such a treat.
@BlubberWhale Guessing that it's going to at least crack over the 1 mill. mark, like many other Wii U ports have. Could be even more if people who never got to play it, finally pick it up for the first time, including me
Funny people complain about EA bad fifa for the switch, and still buys it to warrant being in the 5th most downloaded for October! Shocking.
@mrmememan Agreed, definitely 1 mil, but would be a dang shame if it didn’t reach 2. Where’s your interest level at btw? I wasn’t super hyped, but glad I pulled the trigger. Quality title and interesting new experience for we who have played Pikmin before.
@mrmememan Well, I just read the news after responding to you, and looks like it’s at least doing pretty good for now. 🙂
@BlubberWhale I've always wanted to try out the series, but I haven't really been able to get down to it yet because I was a stupid kid and never capped any of the games for the Wii or Wii U when the consoles were in their prime. Played the demo of 3 Deluxe and thought it was pretty fun
And again not even one arcade game here. All games that also have physical editions. Good thing Hamster don't seem to care about numbers...
The Survivalist seemed to do well even though NL reviewed it poorly.
