Update [Fri 20th Nov, 2020 04:30 GMT]: Surprise, surprise - the physical version of Doom Eternal for the Nintendo Switch has been cancelled. This game will now be a "digital-only" release. Here's a full response from Bethesda:
"While Doom Eternal is 100% on track for an imminent digital-only release on Nintendo Switch, the absence of a physical release at retail resulted in cancelled pre-orders. Affected customers will receive full refunds and should contact their preferred retailer for more information. Stay tuned for much more information coming later this month."
Original article [Fri 20th Nov, 2020 04:00 GMT]: GameStop has reportedly been calling customers who pre-ordered Doom Eternal for the Nintendo Switch to let them know the game has been cancelled. Bethesda's support account on Twitter addressed this with the following response:
"We have not made any announcements on Doom Eternal being cancelled for Switch."
So has this anticipated release really been axed on the hybrid platform? We think it'll be just fine. While Bethesda's message doesn't really clarify much, GoNintendo's Kevin Cassidy has been much more upfront, stating how any issues might just be tied to the game's physical release.
"While I can't say specifics just yet, and I also can't say specifically who gave me info, I will say that I have 99.9% reason to believe that DOOM Eternal on Switch is alive and well. All I can say is that my reason for believing the game isn't cancelled comes from an official source close to the project. If there's any truth to this news from GameStop at all, perhaps it's tied to physical release plans, and not the game overall."
If you're still concerned, back in September, id Software's Marty Stratton mentioned how Doom Eternal for Switch was "very close" to release.

Bethesda has confirmed that Doom Eternal is now a digital-only release on Switch. More info to come this month.
@westman98
This. It's really annoying how silent they've been only to just now randomly say it's digital only out of nowhere. They should have said so a long time ago.
Nothing happened, 1 person looking for 15 seconds of fame was spreading misinformation and you thirsty dopes fell for it. Congrats you played yourself
Oh screw it! I'll get it on PS4 then!
I was waiting for a physical release on switch but only digital? no way.
@Rika_Yoshitake ........lmao
I'm still getting it lol
Edit: NVM I'm getting Game Pass version instead.
@Rika_Yoshitake bruh™
Don't really care about digital.only, at least its still coming to Switch.
A bummer for people looking for physical releases.
I already played and finished this on Game Pass - awesome game!
Something is wrong with this port.
Taking forever to make it with zero public updates, and now skips the physical release. Bethesda/Microsoft thinks it will only sell like 1k copies?
B.F.D.: Big F---ing Disappointment.
@KryptoniteKrunch
Same, but the fact that they waited 8 months to tell us this since its release on other platforms and already made DLC for it, it's annoying because it's going to murder our storage space.
Plus, the fact that they're likely going to charge full price for a year old (worst-playing version I might add) game doesn't help.
Giving me deja vu but at least you can still get it.
Good job on the quick edit.

Oh and keep in mind, people.
We still don't have a release date. Not even a release window.
Guess buying this on Xbox was the right call after all...
Then I have no reason to buy this on Switch then. Unfortunate since I really enjoyed Doom 2016 on Switch especially with gyro controls. PC it is.
The simple reason for this announcement could just be production complications (putting the latest version of the game on cartridge) and whole Logistic due to COVID19. May be they are planning to drop it now in December?
@Sordid
The fact that they waited so long to communicate is the main issue. Now everyone that would've bought it on Switch will buy it elsewhere for much cheaper since it's been out for almost a year. It's going to be the most expensive, worst-playing version of the game. No one with another system will want it.
Basically they realized this would not sell enough copies to justify a physical release at this point.
Just dump it on the eshop and call it a day.
The discounted X1 and PS4 version comes with a free next gen upgrade. And it will be on $10 PC GamePass in a few weeks.
Most likely this is to save on cartridge manufacturing costs. Not surprising really considering Eternal is a much larger game compared to DOOM 2016
"Stay tuned for much more information coming later this month."
November ends a week on Monday, I wonder if there's a general Direct next week (Nintendo said no more Partner Showcases this year, nothing about general Directs). Some good news in this Nintendo info drought would be fantastic.
2020 doesn't want us to have nice things. I'll still get it but dude...
GUTTED now!! Really I am. A digital download will be colossal, I mean MK11 now weighs in at 30GB, so how big will doom be??? Bad move from MS on this front
I'm just glad it's still coming at all.
I would be excited for a shadow drop.
I'll pick it up if the quality is good. The file size may be compressed because of the original game's size, and not everyone has an SD card.
I played a bit of this on PC, but I don't like sitting in front of a tv screen anymore. Switch spoiled me and I rather play my games on my bed and just chilling. Excited for this game--digital or not.
Ouch.... well, my Switch is 80% digital at this point anyways, and this was likely another digital purchase anywho.... Nintendo could send me a 1TB card any time however to help my butt out. Half my games are in cloud atm due to having a full 400gb card. cries
I paid using a Gamestop Giftcard. I wonder if they'll give me gamestop credit for the refund
@GamePerson19 Ask for money back or you’ll ask for your money back. Bamboozle them.
Weak. I prefer physical but I guess I can accept digital. Just bought a 1TB micro sd so this is somewhat perfect timing. Anywho, I already bought and played the game on PC but i'll support this release because I love Doom and greatly respect Panic Button, and hey, Doom in my hands!
Welcome to the M$ owned future!
@Sun-WuGoku
Yeah, shame on me for wanting to play a game on my platform of choice.
I never paid any attention to Doom 2016 or Wolfenstein until they were announced for Switch. Now I’m really into both series and play Doom Eternal on Xbox. I honestly don’t know how Doom Eternal will play well on Switch or be as enjoyable. I know they surprised us before. But I don’t think I’d double dip for it.
It doesn't make sense. Something must have happened with their production line to force them to cancel it.
Hopefully it will, eventually, get a physical copy. Until then, it is no longer a day one purchase for me I'm afraid.
Also, as we've waited for so long I might as well wait for a discount on the eShop.
Predorder canc......ah oh well. Maybe ill grab it digitally down the line when it's on sale
This is why I bought a PS4 in addition to Switch. A compromise almost always has to be made for AAA titles on Switch. (whether it’s price, release date, format, and/or performance).
Maybe is bigger for a 32GB cartridge...
Maybe the game is to large in size to fit on a cartridge. Besides who cares as long it gets released on the Switch.
It will probably get a Limited Run Games release in the future. Too bad. I guess I'll buy it on PS4 at some point.
Even if they released a physical version, we'd probably still had to download half of the game or even more anyway, so...
Will buy the digital version when it's eventually gets a discount.
Well, at least it isn't a cloud version.
Digital-only means they just lost me as a customer, until this gets down to like 5 pounds...
Well, it probably wouldn't fit on a cartridge and we'd have to download most of the game anyway... I'm OK with digital.
@Kochambra It's MS or Microsoft. M$ is something for 4-year olds.
Also Microsoft has nothing to do with it.
That's it - I'm getting it on PC.
I collect DOOM games physically and wanted this one on a portable. This is a shame. If only they would have told us sooner, I wouldn't have wasted all this time not buying the PC version while waiting for this one.
That's an embarrassment. The previous one was on a physical cartridge, which I still own.
Just as well, Nook is giving us more Storage space
I’ll probably not even bother now I’ll get on pc next year when it’s super cheap. 🤷🏻♂️
Well I will get it for the other consoles So no worries.
@Sordid I would actually guess cost cutting. Wolfenstein young blood was digital only and they didn't put wolfenstein 2 fully on a cart. Although young blood was a budget priced title so that might have been the reason for that.
But many of us like to see physical release as an article in personal collection... like books collection or whatever.
Honestly!
Later half of this year is more like a year of disappointment for many Switch fans.
I will buy Doom Eternal on PS4 now instead.
Well. Not getting it for the switch if it's digital only. 👎
Sucks because this is one of 3 games I pre-ordered from Best Buy before my Gamer's Pass Unlimited expired. I was set to get it for $47.99 (assuming a $59.99 retail). Even Walmart often has $59.99 retail Switch games for $49.99, but that's physical only. Digital are ALWAYS MSRP.
@JR150 I think a long time ago they still intended to release it physically.
Probably a lot of games are going to get canned like this. The Switch isn’t powerful enough for certain games and is now 2 gens behind. Switch Pro has to happpen.
Noo its only about 50 GB
Love that Game, it is my personal Game of the Year.
@Bass_X0
But why did it take 8 months since release on other platforms for them to finally come out and say it? They didn't just magically become unable to produce Doom Eternal cartridges overnight. They should've told us this at least back in June or before they made the DLC.
@jarvismp
But...it hasn't been canned...
What kind of stupid move is this? I'd understand if it was some weaker title, but Doom? C'mon...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, To the righter of this article that joke hell no was FREAKEN funny.
Who gives a flying duck hunt. Same people that can't move on with every tech innovation. You can still print out your box art pics for your shrines.
@Devlind You don't know that, physical could've been cancelled because it's now a cloud version.
@sanderev It seems that you perfectly understood what megacorporation I was referring to, so either you're 4 years old (which I highly doubt) or M$ isn't "something for 4-year olds".
Also M$ owns Zenimax, Bethesda and id Software. So saying that M$ "has nothing to do" with this decision could seem a little... naive, maybe? I guess the announcement that Doom Eternal was being included in M$ Game Pass just three days after the acquisition was made public, was just another totally independent decision by the totally independent Bethesda with no M$ involvement whatsoever, right?
@Mfreddy22 I am a digital only person, but I do like to test games out on physical before committing to digital. Others go physical only for more reasons than box art. Want to loan a game to a friend? Can't do it with digital. Want to sell the game? Can't do it with digital. Digital requires a large SD card to continue to store all the games. Physical carts are their own "SD Card" with only some data necessitating digital storage.
I know you know all of this, but it's 2:45am, I'm bored and my fingers wanted to exercise.
The typical cycle for Nintendo and the triple A games that are on it.
Yeah that's a no from me, dawg
What?! I was waiting specifically for a cartridge release on this game! I loved Doom 2016 & bought it physical. Now I'm not so sure, will probably pick this up on next-gen or Stadia. Weak-sauce Bethesda!!
Yeah I'm going to have to skip this too. I'll get it elsewhere.
@Kochambra The acquisition of ZeniMax won't be finalised until next year. So no, this has nothing to do with MS.
Also MS is releasing Ori physical on the Switch, an have released physical copies of Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons,
And many games have been released on GamePass, even games by Bethesda.
And on the "M$" part, it's immature and stupid. Please stop it.
No, this is just the company that released Fallout 76, being the company that released Fallout 76.
Just another company on my ban list. I mean, you expect such whales to fork out for a 32GB or even 64GB cartridge easily., but they don't have any kind of balls.
I didn't know Microsoft and Bethesda have less money than some one-man indie devs that have their Switch games out physical.
Huge respect for the little fishies that don't shy away from costs. They really love what they do. Will support some of them instead.
Meh, its been out nearly a year and a lot of people's hype died when it didn't release on switch within a few months.
We don't even know how it runs compared with the older versions.
Lame sauce... I have the other games as a digital download (which is fine) but but having the option for a physical cart still sucks something major.
Got a bad feeling about this new release on my beloved system.
(Although, to be fair- I loved it on my PS4.)
After waiting for half a year, I can then wait another year until this is on 50% sale. Until then Hard Pass.
Yeah, Gamestop called me to tell me that my Pre-Order has been cancelled because it's now Digital Only. However, I have a 1TB SD Card in my Switch, so, I have more than enough space. So I'm ok with it. But, as a physical collector, I'd prefer to have the physical version. Shame. I always choose physical when there's a choice between physical or digital.
The incompetence... lol. They can shove the game up their asses at this point.
Hard pass for me.
@Kochambra Microsoft technically doesn't own Bethesda yet. So this actually has nothing to do with Microsoft.
Well there goes the only Doom on Switch that I won't be buying then. Without it being physical it's practically worthless as my Steam version is already digital and a better game. No way am I wasting space on my Switch for a waterdown version. If Doom Eternal was an indie game then I could understand but this game was own by a publisher that is now a part of the riches company (Microsoft) in the world. You can't tell me they couldn't get some Microsoft money to afford the 64gb cartridge to sell this game. I hate to admit it, but the more Bethesda failed like this, the more they started to make me like EA now and EA is the only one that releases their games physically nowadays.
@sanderev You're right: the acquisition of ZeniMax by M$ won't be FINALIZED until next year. But it's already an ongoing process, and as I said, assuming that the looming presence of M$ has no bearing on decisions such as this, seems to me kind of naive.
Sure, there have been some Bedestha releases on M$ Game Pass, but how many of them were a barely six month old blockbuster? None that I can remember.
Also, just out of curiosity: Has the approach of labeling a behavior as "immature and stupid" or "something for 4-year olds" ever worked for you? Because it sounds to me like something that would have the completely opposite effect.
@Razer See the beginning of this comment.
The PR and communication on the Switch version of this game has been absolutely wretched.
I'd prefer to play using gyro aiming but if I'd known it was going to take this long I'd have bought it for the PS4 Pro or One X to play while I waited. They could have sold the game twice if they'd been more honest.
One difficult game I end up rage quitting a lot. It's like 68gb on xbox, if they fit multiplayer in there too the size could have a lot to do with no physical.
I was wondering that too. How many gb is it? Surely fairly hefty!
Will wait for a full cartridge (with DLC) edition from LRG.
Well damn.....guess I'm not playing Doom Eternal then. I'm not downloading a 60+GB game to my switch and there's no way I'm gonna get all the "multiplayer" acheivements on xbox so no point.
absolute bull💩. I've had this preordered since March. I bought a ps4 copy couple of days ago for £11. I think this will be the way forward for anything this ambitious on the Switch,digital only
Here’s hoping a physical ultimate edition will be released later with all dlc included as well as all the performance patches on cart. As of now though no physical = no purchase.
I think I will skip this game all together.
Dont like shady moves like this😠
Honestly the game itself should have been cancelled a long time ago, I feel like this version has been in development hell.
Pre-order cancelled. I have the PS4 version already.
@Steel76
Are you kidding? 30 FPS is not bad at all! Why is 60 FPS so important?! It’s not as though the enemies are faster and you are slower at 30 which is what the original ran at on Switch and I saw no problem.
@Grumblevolcano I'm still hoping this means the game would be too big for a costly 64 GB cartridge...since it's been optimised for switch prooo! Let's gooooo! Switch pro confirmed.
That's really too bad, so many people were eager to buy physical and complain about the mandatory download !
The only reason they didn't say before was to push the sales of those remakes. Suckers!!!
Welcome to the Nintendo Switch cloud everyone.
This is a big head scratcher. I couldn’t see the game needing anything bigger than a 32 GB card... or however these things are made. Possibly a GOTY edition when all the DLC is released?
Just get it on another system and have a much better time and get a physical copy.
I guess the long delay (probably COVID-inflicted at this point) is reducing demand as people give up waiting for their pre-orders and buy on another platform.
If I had one of the new consoles I would be tempted too.
Reduced demand + Expensive high capacity cartridges + Microsoft streamlining = digital only.
Sucks but there you go.
100% on track. It's not moving however, because the hype train derailed, and the track it is 100% on is no longer the track it used to be on, the track towards a physical release as well. DOOM Eternal on Switch is becoming as ironic as Duke Nukem Forever at this point. I'm no longer getting it, unless it drops below €10 at some point and I still have the slightest of interest in it.
By the way, it's time for Crysis to drop below 10 as well.
Well then they lost a sale! No physical = no buy!
@Steel76
Yes in comparison maybe. But if you only judge it by itself and not have any other version (not everyone buys multiple platforms) then it’s perfect. It just makes sense if you could play a better version you would buy the PS4 version and skip the switch port altogether. I played Doom on Switch only and never noticed any input lag at all. I don’t know where you are coming from in that regard. If there was any at all we are talking very minuscule amounts.
Yeah that's real disappointing. Well maybe my backlog just got one less game so that means I may start focusing on something else on that list. This might be a good thing in the long run because my backlog keeps getting bigger and I'm running out of time to get through as much of it before Monster Hunter Rise releases
Well dang. Held off on buying it on my PC to play it on Switch, but this puts an end to that. I'll be getting this next time it goes on sale on Steam.
@Steel76
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zquClG3j9so
Not much difference at all!
I don’t have any other current gens other than switch so I’m perfectly content with taking a hit in performance as long as the game is playable without any major setbacks. (I’m looking at you Ark)
@Sculptor i have the pc collector edition with the helmet and it does indeed come with a jewel case but with a download code inside. no disc. Would have been nice if Bethesda could have at least did that.
So, they’ve gone from stating that the game would release day-and-date with the other platforms, to being delayed by months and being a digital only release? Smh
maybe it'll be reasonably priced then? Because $60 for such a late port would be crazy
@Rika_Yoshitake Yeah one person named Bethesda lmao
@Sun-WuGoku Microsoft doesn't own them yet. The acquisition will be completed in early 2021. This is all Bethesda
Sigh. Oh well, at least is not cloud.
I hope they at least can be preordered and predownloaded, because if not i'm not going to be able to play it until a week later. Not everywhere we can afford or have the opportunity to be able to have good speed internet. Halo MCC lasted downloading two weeks.
@sanderev Microsoft now owns Bethesda, which owns ID software, so technically Microsoft now has something to do with it.
Wow that really sucks.
Calling it now...going to be at least 35GB.
They didn't want to splurge for an expensive cart or even pay for the download code-in-a-box method and said "F it, just make it digital only".
I'll wait until this comes to the Windows Store on GP now...
No thanks, I will pick it up on my Xbox One X.
On the bright side, at least I don't have to buy it now? My collector side of me wanted to get it, as I have DOOM 2016.
I'll just play it on gamepass.
Still, not cool guys. Not cool.
Why? I was looking forward to a physical release. The box art would've looked I N S A N E
Digital only? Really? That's gonna be like 30GB...
I wonder if this implies Doom Eternal will be a budget release on Switch for £35? As it has completely missed the boat after the Devs themselves stated they were building the game from day one, with Switch in mind. Also Isabelle is playable in Multiplayer .
we still dont know if theres going to be physical version since they havent even rule it out but it would be a very stupid decision to screw over gamers who prefer physical copies.
Leaves the door wide open for our pals at Limited Run Games to make a deal and secure a physical release for it, just like they've done with DOOM 64!
And there goes most of my excitement for this game...
we still haven't seen as much as a screenshot.
Get it on PS4/XBO/ or PC everyone.
You know, I wouldn't mind digitally only. I'm just saying though, if Beth and MS don't have to pay for all the plastic and all third party game stores, maybe I shouldn't be charged for them
Release it at £30 and you've got a deal.
@Sordid I think the same, most likely, they'll drop It as a surprise on December.
Altough it's really frustrating that this game won't have a physical release, I'll still get It for the Switch. Those guys that say "I'm glad I got It for PS4 on disc", they must not know that you don't play the game from the disc, It gets installed, so it's the same sh*t at the end.
I’ll remove this from my list then.
@Kochambra I would love to hear exactly how "the looming presence of Microsoft" caused this company to make one of their upcoming ports, digital only.
Because you say it's foolish not to think this, but it logically makes absolutely no sense why "the looming presence of Microsoft" would cause Bethesda to make this game digital only.
Not only is it in no way logical, it's actually quite foolish to even consider that lol.
Others have said it, but without a physical edition with at least the complete single player portion of the game on cartridge, this is a no buy from me. If I'm going digital, then I'll get it digital on my PS4 when it hits a good sale instead.
Shame really, as I have 2016 on both Switch (physical) and PS4 (digital), and would probably have done the same again.
@Edu23XWiiU
"Those guys that say "I'm glad I got It for PS4 on disc", they must not know that you don't play the game from the disc, It gets installed, so it's the same sh*t at the end."
I'm completely digital on PS4. The difference for a lot of people though, when it comes to physical PS4 games, is that a game can be installed quicker from disk than it can be downloaded again, if they are managing a lot of games on and off of their PS4 (with typically smaller downloads required to update their game to the current version).
Yes, I want it on switch. Don't own a PS4 or Xbox one
Honestly don't care. Most of the games I buy are digital anymore anyways. I'll still be picking this up.
PS4 it is. What a shame. I've been patiently waiting it out. Sorry, I don't buy $60 games digitally.
File size is very likely too big.
@BreathingMiit Based on the overwhelming negative response to the digital only schtick, which will have driven demand down even further, I doubt they'll recoup even half of those lost pre orders.
Based on that, I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if they either cancel it altogether or shelf it until the Pro is released, if it exists.
While other current gen console owners are enjoying Ancient God's Pt. 1, I forgot all a/b the Switch being left out of the official game release. Poor Switch
Butts on hats.
@Razer "Because you say it's foolish not to think this"
Nope, I never said that.
First off, I didn't use the word "foolish" but the word "naive". The word "foolish" implies a lack of intelligence, and I have no doubt that I'm having this conversation with intelligent people.
My words were: "Assuming that the looming presence of M$ has no bearing on decisions such as this, seems to me kind of naive".
And I stand by those words. Have you ever been involved in a company buyout? From the very moment it is announced, every decision that anyone makes in the company being bought, is conditioned by that impending change of ownership. From the bottom tiers to the very top, employees are worried sick about the incoming changes, wondering about their future, desperate to seem indispensable, desperate for their division to look profitable.
Did this decision come from some M$ corporate mandate or from some anxious Bethesda executive? I don't know and I don't really care. But I have little doubt that the ongoing buyout influenced whoever made the decision. So of course this has everything to do with M$.
I'd be more open to downloading large-file-sized games on Switch if the higher capacity microSD cards were less expensive or if I could play my downloaded games from an external HDD. I usually prefer playing bigger games at home anyway.
@Elvie to be fair ill bet it wold not have all been on whatever cartridge they put out anyway. I hate these half of game on cart releases. it should be made illegal.
bethesda is going to have to deal with the backlash over this cause its not setting well with alot of switch owners who preorder the physical copy and finding out our orders got canceled.
I wonder how much this decision is playing into Microsoft's half-exclusivity strategy.
If you've gotta get it digital, you may as well get it on Game Pass, I guess.
My guess is that they’ll drop info soon during a Nintendo Direct with them also saying “and it’s available now!”
i was going to get digital anyway but this is a shame for those that wanted a physical cartridge
Actually it's good news because now I'm sure I'll buy the PS4 version, not the Switch one. I could not make my mind before.
No big deal. Digital beats physical on Switch by far.
@slaine
Xbox: Game Pass
Switch: Hard Pass
@Mando44646 Doom 2016 is still $60 at most retailers
@ObsidianEleven I don't know man, my cousin has a PS4 Pro, and he gets pissed off every time he installs the games from the discs, it takes a REALLY long time to do it hahahah
@Kochambra it is much more likely a technical issue that the physical release is canned. It's a large game. Even when they dumb the version down like they did on Doom 2016 it is going to be a big download. The most likely scenario is Bethesda saying, why waste time and resources on a cartridge that contains a small fraction of the game that would still leave a huge download. Cart+big download or just a big download? Kudos to them for not making it a download code in a plastic box.
Why would MS or Bethesda want to lessen the experience on switch? Less sales means less profit. There is no incentive for intentionally doing this. Anyone who waited a full year for them to figure out how to make a switch version is not going to suddenly buy an xbox now. Both companies want the best experience possible for their titles on whatever platform.
sound logical, since nintendo does not release huge cardridges.
and maybe for the better, that means the developers don't hold back.
No physical, no buy. Sorry bro.
That's...somewhat disappointing honestly. Was hoping to be consistent in having all the major DOOM games on my Switch but have a feeling that Eternal would be way too big of a game to be bought digitally and would have rather had an actual cartridge of it. Guess I'll get it on XBox One instead but still let down I couldn't make my Switch basically an all-in-one DOOM machine.
@Somebody "Why would MS or Bethesda want to lessen the experience on switch?"
To reinforce the message that these games are better on M$ Game Pass? Or they're just cutting costs, and they'd rather do it on a version of the game for a non-M$ ecosystem? Just two possible reasons why a nervous exec could make this decision.
@Kochambra do they think people will spend $300+ on an xbox because it didnt have a physical copy on switch? Making their game worse would only hurt them.
This is not an accurate assumption that MS or Bethesda did this to enhance xbox. Switch has set a precedent of bad 3rd party support. New games almost never come out same day as other platforms, there are plenty of examples of "physical releases" being a code in a box. There are now penty of examples of new games being cloud only. The accurate blame is on Nintendo's overpriced underperforming cartridge. This is the reason most 3rd party games are ps3/360 era, it is just easier to make that size game work on switch.
@Somebody "do they think people will spend $300+ on an xbox because it didnt have a physical copy on switch?"
It would be hard to guess what the exact reasoning behind this decision has been. I've just ventured two possible answers. Whatever their reasoning, will this decision improve the sales of the Switch version? Nope, it'll most probably hurt them. But with the impeding acquisition by M$, the sales of the Switch version of Doom Ethernal are probably pretty low in their list of priorities.
"The accurate blame is on Nintendo's overpriced underperforming cartridge. This is the reason most 3rd party games are ps3/360 era".
Nope. The main reason why there are so many ps3/360 era games being ported to Switch is quite simple: They're easier to port. Generally speaking, it's easier to port a game developed for a specific hardware to more powerful hardware (or to hardware in a similar power level) than porting it to less powerful hardware.
And that's also the reason why we're beginning to see some cloud games (not "plenty", but some) on Switch: Once you've got the streaming infrastructure up and running, it's much easier to "port" games that way than to do a proper port.
@Kochambra so you admit the claim that MS has anything to do with this is a baseless claim.
The idea that while MS recently made good physical releases of Ori and Minecraft Dungeons (two games the cartridges can handle) on switch but suddenly wanted to swoop in on a decision made by a company they dont yet own is ridiculous.
"so you admit the claim that MS has anything to do with this is a baseless claim"
Where do you see such "admision"? M$ has everything to do with this decision. I don't know if they made this decision themselves of if some nervous exec at Bethesda/Zenimax made it. And frankly, I couldn't care less.
What I'm pretty sure is that whoever made this decision and whatever their reasoning was, the buyout of Bethesda by M$ conditioned it. Because that how these processes work.
Let me repeat my original words: "Assuming that the looming presence of M$ has no bearing on decisions such as this, seems to me kind of naive".
Yeah...I'm not putting a file size that large on my Switch. Guess I won't be getting this one unless this supposed "Switch Pro" releases and it has a fair amount of memory....
I know I'm a dying breed, but I will not buy a game unless it's physical. I like having it on my shelf. And 15 years from now, when the servers are shutdown, I will still be able to power up my switch and play (if I want to)
@ICISAZEL The part that upsets me is that I preordered the Deluxe Edition which came with a pretty cool alternate cover and several in-game bonuses.
I hope the bonuses can be offered as consolation for cancelling the physical version but I have doubt they will.
So even if we wanted Digital for Switch we pay the Physical price just to get the game.
Standard 59.99
Eternal 89.99
neither of which will have a price cut which leads to them be a scalper making people pay physical price for Digital and reminds me of this YT video.
Digital Distribution Vs Physical Media and True Ownership

Even after of the squabbling here over physical vs. digital, I am just jazzed there might be a Thanksgiving Direct to give is all of the info. I have been playing it on my phone through GamePass and I need this on my Switch!
And here I thought this was going to be one of the most ambitious ports to the Switch. I might as well could've played this game on any other platform if I knew about this.
If at this point they refuse to make it Cart then I am moving on and finding games that will support Cart.
@JR150 Chiiiiiiiill
@NathanTheAsian It still is one of the most ambitious ports on the Switch. Nothing has changed. It being a digital-only is likely because the install size would exceed the system memory on the Switch, therefore forcing people to buy SD card space regardless of buying online or physical, so they chose to just cut the physical copies. That 64 gb Switch cartridge needs to come, really soon.
@smh I just checked. It's actually only 17.5gb, which is very impressive for a next-gen port. At this point, I'm gonna use the pandemic and rough launch as an excuse.
Help. It wouldn't download to my perfectly working sd card. It kept "bricking" the console. Had to remove it and download to system memory. It works now...but now i can't transfer it to sd card!
