Monster Hunter Rise hits Switch early next year, and will no doubt be on the 'must-have' list of many a Nintendo fan. The beast-busting franchise may have started life on the PlayStation 2, but it arguably found a new level of fame thanks to the Nintendo 3DS, so it's nice to see the Switch get some exclusive love.
If you're keen on this title, then you'll be pleased to learn that Monster Hunter Rise has just gotten a six-minute gameplay trailer which shows off the Great Sword weapon – you can view it above this text.

I'm going to be slayin all dayin man. (Just kill me for that joke)
Man this looks great
Looks good, I’ll keep playing MH Generations Ultimate until Rise comes out.
This looks cool, but what makes the sword gameplay great? I mean it's just the usual way that sword is used in Monster hunter.
I’m so excited for this! March can’t come soon enough.
I REALLY need to start focusing more on clearing out the backlog (even if they're way low on the list) before this comes out. Once I get Rise nothing else will be played for a very long time (probably vast majority of 2021 will be all Rise).
The same happened with MH Generations Ultimate so I really need to get to work. Otherwise I might as well just toss it.
Monster Hunter for Smash! Just having a single boss/assist trophy is not enough representation for such a big franchise. Hopefully, they were just waiting until the release of this game.
GS is my main. So yes lets check this out.
That looks pretty nice and all...but those frame drops. The battle looked unaffected by it though.
@asdf0987 Well with the whole Wirebug thing it's probably going to allow for a crap ton of manuverability and mobility, which will probably contribute to combat as well in terms of increasing the pace of fights
My friend came in at World, got a Switch as soon as Rise was announced, and now we're playing through 4U and GU together as we wait for Rise. :3 We also both have 3U, but without online play, that'll be harder to figure out
Great Sword gameplay... more like LAME SWORD GAMEPLAY 😤🤯😖🤫😣😓😠🤯🙁😧🙄😳😐😩😧
Hrm...well, I'm taking Friday, March 26, 2021 off.
@N8tiveT3ch Jesus! Can we have a comments section where someone doesn’t mention fps! It’s boring beyond belief, not to mention this isn’t the finished build
Oh man I am excited!!!!!
I love Monster Hunter and have been playing since Playstation 2 & PSP. The only thing that I hate, is that it takes a lot of time to play and outfit your character.
@asdf0987 First watch... Wirebugs make combat flow a lot faster than older titles. I may go back and watch again, but aside from that a lot of it looks the same.
@Rodan2000
I see they basically are making this new one MH:World Lite with some twists. Riding the creature, collecting endemic life, using the clutch cla--I mean wirebug, even the fact you can now move and run while consuming a potion is straight out of World.
I am totally fine with this. I was kind of hoping they would go back to the blood spray for the hits but that doesn't affect gameplay, so I'll just have to accept that as a relic of the past. Seems hunter arts and styles are left behind too...that's fine with me.
I'm looking forward to this new evolution in Monster Hunter. I wanted a game for Switch that took ideas from World, and now it's coming, so I'll be a happy camper once I have my hands on this.
@Rodan2000 If we're talking Hyrule Warriors AOC levels of fps then it's completely justified
Really liking the look of this, World was my first MH game and I hated how sluggish MHGU felt in comparison.
It looks like a lot of the QoL improvements from world have carried across like the clutch claw and being able drink potions while moving.
I just hope the online has native voice chat, I couldn't imagine playing without being able to talk with your hunting party.
Planning on this being my first proper Monster Hunter entry. I'm consuming all the footage I can. Needless to say I'm hyped!
Knowing this will soon be on my switch alongside the No More Heroes trilogy...I think I'm set. That's all I need.
Really liking the vibe of this footage! This will probably be my first Monster Hunter.
This looks awesome.
I may have to main great sword for Monster Hunter Rise. That move set is absolutely sick.
@ChaosBadger777
Wirebug isn’t the same as clutch claw. It’s a lot better actually. Clutch claw revolved around tenderizing which a lot of people hated, whereas the wirebug does a lot more. It’s fully integrated into just about every system, be it traversal, attacks, recoveries, etc.
Also, no voice chat. But as always, custom and preset shoutouts are a thing and covers all necessary communication. There’s also fully voiced shoutouts as a option which is a nice touch. But if you still want to use voice chat, Discord is the best option. I played hundreds of hours of MHGU with my brother using Discord and the Arctis 3 Wireless headset with Bluetooth, which mixed audio from discord on my phone via Bluetooth with the in game audio via headphone jack (simple extension to reach from the TV).
Btw MHGU is an incredible game. It’s a little more rigid, but once you adjust you’ll find it’s very similar to World, especially in combat.
@Dualmask
I was kind of hoping they would go back to the blood spray for the hits but that doesn't affect gameplay, so I'll just have to accept that as a relic of the past
???
But there is blood in Monster Hunter Rise. They showed it in the TGS footage. Optional blood like older titles, optional damage numbers, the works.
Also, there’s nothing “lite” about this title. It’s a full fledged Monster Hunter. And wirebug is nothing like clutch claw, thankfully. Wirebug is all about mobility and integrating new move sets. Clutch claw was just for quick mount tenderizing.
This looks great and fun, but any other veteran MHers out there feel like that grapple/swing looks like it’ll add and take away at the same time? Honestly it looks fun, and looks like it’ll give you a Spider-Man like utility and ability. Which also kinda (just slightly) pulls me out of the MH experience at the same time. Regardless, it’s already pre-ordered, and I will sink 1000+ hours into it!
@Dm9982
Veteran Hunter here. Over 2,000 hours across 5 different games spanning 3 generations.
Like styles and arts, I think it’s a good fit and well balanced. There’s a cool down timer and you only get two of them unless you find a temporary third extra out in the field. And the cool down last even longer for moves in combat, so these wirefall recovery moves are not the sort of thing you’re going to be spamming constantly. You’re going to have to weigh the pros and cons to decide if using one of them is worth forfeiting the ability to do other moves with them until it recharges.
But ya, this game is gonna get a TON of playtime. It’s gonna be one of those games we play for years to come. It’s a AAA portable hybrid Monster Hunter. This is the #1 most wanted game on Switch since it released in 2017
@JaxonH I wasn’t sure, but figured it was limited - at least in battle. Not a bad thing by any means. Any word if Styles/Arts are making a return? Generations ruined me for MH I think, Jesus that game was sooooo good. I spent 1480 hours across the 3DS and Switch versions. Ruined me so much I couldn’t get into World after I bought it. Supposedly it’s much better after Iceborne, but I haven’t gotten that expansion yet.
@JaxonH The clutch claw didn't involve tenderizing until Iceborne. Originally it was all about extra mobility. The wirebug looks like it's taking that to the next level though, but we won't know for sure until we play this.
@Dm9982
Styles and arts are not returning. It’s confirmed that, along with Prowler Mode, those were MHGU specific. This game is all about the wirebug and Palamutes,
MHGU is a spectacular game, for sure. So good, in fact, I liked it more than World... at least, initially. Once Iceborn released, that was enough to push World over the top as my new favorite MH game. But they’re still both excellent games.
The best part about MH Rise, is its taking all the best parts of World and mixing it with a more classic MH approach. Optional blood, a focus on shoutouts for communication, separate village and hub quests (though they said the hub will also have cutscenes, and they can be skipped so you can have uninterrupted MP unlike in MH World, which was one of my biggest complaints), more arena styled maps, no scout flies, etc. I just hope they use the classic skill system with negative skills and activated thresholds. Not that I’d be upset if they stuck with the MHW system, but I do prefer the strategy of the classic system. And I hope for crafted decorations and RNG charms rather than the RNG decorations and crafted charms of World. But again, if they stick with the MHW system, it’s not the end of the world.
@MisterMan
You’re thinking of the slinger, not the clutch claw, which didn’t exist before Iceborn.
@asdf0987 From the looks of it, with the use of the wirebug system it will allow any weapon to be used akin to the insect glaive... which is a very mobile weapon that allows multiple different types of attack, defense, and aerial.
@NGNYS Did you play MH:World? This game is looking almost identical to the setup they had in World.
@JaxonH I meant the blood spray from older titles. There was blood spray in older entries on PSP and 3DS.
@JaxonH Thanks for the info! I never got into World, mainly because of being a parent and the kiddos own the tv for their shows, but also about 25% because Gen was just so good that MHW was hard for me to get into. Wasn’t a fan of the skill system change and the rotating online events to get certain gear - never a fan of this method of delivery,
Prefer traditional mini dlc events like the past MH games. But other than that I didn’t know much regarding MHW. I do plan on getting to it some day however. Sooner if I can get my remote play with Vita to work better again.
@JaxonH I would like to see the use of Paintballs for tracking still and get rid of most of the bug systems from World... those really tainted the experience for me. It makes the hunt that much more tense if you can lose track of the monster and have to search again for the darn thing, allowing it time to regain it's composure and strength, which then elongates the battle. I dunno maybe I'm just a whiner, but if it worked why change it? I understand world was meant to bring new players into the fray, but the option to use classic style hunting (not regarding the map sections) and easy (noob bugs and the like) then it would have a been a better all around experience. Beautiful game, just some bad execution. I haven't tried Iceborne, I have it just haven't dived in... I will give it a try on your reccomendation.
@Dm9982 Remote play with Vita will never work that well, lol... I spent a LOT of time trying to get my whole setup configured and it is just not ideal for streaming playing unless you are playing PvZ or something akin to that. Using PS Remote play via a Laptop and a PS4 controller works pretty well though and I feel your pain with the TV being real estate owned solely by my kids... lol. Good luck!
@Unit_DTH Lol thanks! Yeah at one point I had it going well enough that I was able to do an entire play of RE7 on Madhouse all via remote play with headset - heart pounding stuff during Mia and a Jack chase after dinner. Moved my PS4 across the room after that (which broke the hardline to it) and lost all remote play functionality. Need to hardline it again and then it SHOULD be ok. Just been lacking the time to run the line under the floor boards...
Expecting a demo drop in January!
@Kieroni great story. Started with 3U and is my personal favorite. Hope your friend enjoys those old skool MonHuns despite starting with World. At one time I had a dozen friends I could have local hunting parties with, but marriage, having children, and just toxic personalities (none on my end) have severed those ties. I don't know if I should consider myself a winner or a loser lol.
@Unit_DTH
This game actually utilized a new system where there are 3 monsters on any given map (like World) but only 1 of them is the quest monster (assuming it’s a hunting quest). Instead of paintballs, you send out an owl to scout for monsters. They seem to show on your map right away but with “?” so you don’t know which is which. Once you’ve encountered a monster it’s icon replaces the “?” for the rest of the quest. So it seems to be a lot more action focused where you don’t spend as much time hunting the monsters down like in World. Which is a good choice for a portable title, I think.
I actually enjoyed the scout flies in World after a while. Because that particular game is designed with such large, intricate maps, the scout fly and tracking system is a really good fit. But I don’t think it would be a good fit for this game.
@Rodan2000 You think a company would show off a polished product instead of a crapy looking one.
@N8tiveT3ch Keep in mind this is footage from a game under development. I'm sure y the end it will get better.
I'm so excited for this!!! I don't know why MH World didn't vibe with me stronger. I did enjoy it but didn't play it as much as I played MH4U. However something about the vertical movement in the game is really hyping me up.
The title of this article got me thinking about the distinction between "Greatsword gameplay" and "Sword gameplay which is great."
@Shiro28 You really are a optimist aren't you? I'm sure it'll be fine but it might not on 3 almost 4 year tech...i think the processor is older than that.
@JaxonH I didn't see the owl bit which Iis a good enough addition and if the maps are like World, which it appears they are, then it will most likely be helpful. Honestly, I just can't wait to play this game!
@Dm9982 I feel your pain! I've never had much luck with anything other than a hardline with remote play for my ps4. Good luck on finding the time. Gonna have to find a break between Dragon tales and spongebob to get the job done.
@N8tiveT3ch It will probably be a little more polished, but honestly I still play MHGU on the switch more than I play World, so graphics are great and all, but gameplay still holds the crown with these titles.
I’m so hyped for this game!
Will this game offer a something for a solo player? I’ve understood these games to play best with multiplayer...
@Unit_DTH , if you are interested in more in depth information i would suggest looking up Arekkz gaming or Gaijin Hunter on YouTube. They do some great videos on all information on MH Rise
Looks a bit more traditional than World, which is a good thing.
The series started to lose its magic after the perfect 4U, (Generations was a bit meh, World was ruined by its online IMO)
But this is looking good. Cautiously optimistic.
Lock on camera please! Argh!
@LEGEND_MARIOID No way. MHW has that option so maybe they'll include it. No one uses it because it's really bad for this type of game. Target camera is good. You just hit the left bumper to orient your camera back to the monster.
@MisterMan I use the "lock-on" camera in every version, but it is more of a "focus" camera on every one before MHW, I use the right control stick too much for it to be of real use anyway.
