Team17 and Moi Rai Games have announced that Monster Sanctuary, a monster-taming Metroidvania-style RPG, will be launching on Switch on 8th December.
We first heard about this one back in November 2018, when the game smashed its Kickstarter goals to fund a launch on Nintendo's platform. Since then, development has continued and the game's been in Steam Early Access, all in preparation for its full launch at the end of the year.
Monster Sanctuary starts off by making you select your starter monster Pokémon-style, before throwing you into a quest to capture and tame more. You'll be exploring a Metroidvania-style world where team synergy and combos are key during your turn-based battles, and it's all wrapped up in a story that has you uncovering the secrets behind a mystery which threatens the peace between humans and monsters.
During its year in Early Access, Monster Sanctuary has expanded with a series of significant updates that broaden its fantastical world, such as the introduction of player vs player gameplay, and new areas to explore: the volcanic Magma Chamber, the claustrophobic Underworld, and the mechanical Mystical Workshop. Each has expanded on the menagerie of monsters available for players to track down and tame, and added new gameplay opportunities to explore.
It'll be available for £15.99 / €19.99 / $19.99 when it does arrive on the eShop this December, with all of those new additions and updates intact.

Good, I liked this game a lot, been looking at it on steam.
Wow, this actually looks pretty cool. Also stop using that word to describe adventure games with exploration, waaaaay too cliche.
@TG16_IS_BAE I'd argue that the cliche's are the fault of the developers, not reviewers.
Glad to have backed this one its come together very nicely
@TG16_IS_BAE Metroidvania? It’s a genre at this point. I wouldn’t consider that cliche...
Saw the tagline and ran to the comments to say, "WHAT!? WANT!" ...That is all 😂
Looks fun ☺️ #mywalletisready
Definitely looks interesting! Every time I see games like this, though, it just reminds me again how disappointing it is that Game Freak is so unimaginative with the Pokémon games. I dream of the day that series gets handed to developers that are actually interested in fulfilling the potential of the IP.
I was pretty impressed until "play onlin" popped up. It's like, if it's a free feature.... I shouldn't complain. I understand why they include that, but I don't like throwing away $60 a month on a yearly contract so I can play online with cheaters and gaers who play all day. The thrill of playing with friends and meeting new allys is big, but the desrtoyer-class tanks with rocket-launching micro-purchased skin-wearers is smothering. Online play hype is DOA. For me. Cheers if you love it, though.
Finally! I’ve been following this on Imgur and Twitter, and every time I get an email about it, it’s just about a pc update - been waiting impatiently for this one!
@TG16_IS_BAE Which word?
I like how the game combines 2D platforming, exploration and monster battles. Looks like the monsters abilities help you to access new areas which is really cool. This is one I'll be looking out for.
@LilMuku "Metroidvania" I think.
@wazlon The trailer, at first, led me to believe it would be a little more pure platforming/exploring and I think I would have preferred that. I was a little disappointed that it halts for turn-based encounters. It could still be great, but I was beginning to imagine how customizing the skill trees on helper-monsters could lead to action-oriented gaming.
@TG16_IS_BAE "stop using [Metroidvania] to describe adventure games with exploration"
I agree, we should also stop using "rhythm action" to describe music based games where you act on a rhythm. I also wish games with lots of fighting would stop being called "fighting games".
Don't you just hate when people call things the thing that they're called.
@LilMuku Games with fighting. Fighting games. Rhythm games. Rhythm action. Exploration games. Metroid and Castlevania? Sorry, but most of the games that use that description are the FURTHEST thing from those two games. Most games that steal that concept cannot live up to what Metroid and Castlevania brought to the table, and other than being a sidescroller with exploration elements, they aren't a metroid or a vania. So they shouldn't use the thing to describe them, when they are the furthest thing from it. Next poor argument, please.
@readalie Only, it's not. What does this game have in common with Metroid or Castlevania? That it's a side-scroller? Then call it a Mario-vania, or a Sonic-vania. Sorry, it's just a poor descriptor, especially for games that don't actually share any elements of Metroid or Castlevania.
@ian_beale Both perpetuate them, so there is that. Nobody has the gall to call it out, because nobody wants to jump out of that box, yet.
The game in question, Monster Sanctuary, is STANDING ON IT'S OWN. It's not a metroidvania. It's doing something new and fresh. Let it be new and fresh. This isn't a metroid or a vania
@LilMuku So a game with monster catching and turn based battles is now metroid-vania? Which Metroid game and which Castlevania game had turn based battles and monster collection? Seems like Monster Sanctuary is doing it's own thing, so to call it a metroid-vania seems like it's putting it in a box it doesn't belong in. It's new and fresh, let's let it be new and fresh. Other than side-scrolling, it's not any of the other things.
@TG16_IS_BAE its the genre name
@LilMuku That's nice. This game isn't it. Please move on.
Metroidvania is not a genre. The genre is Adventure. The term is used to describe the STYLE of adventure game that these are a subset of. Definitely overused and, clearly, misunderstood by a vast swath of people.
@PoorGeno I think you misunderstand. The online play seems to be entirely optional. So why wouldn’t you just play it offline the whole time instead of missing out on an experience you clearly want to enjoy?
@TG16_IS_BAE bro its a Metroidvania game. Deal with it and for everyones sake just shut the hell up lmao. You're old enough to go on the internet but you're wetting your nappy and crying over a game being categorized. Just shut up.
This game looks fantastic! Releasing rather soon too.
@TG16_IS_BAE this is all very interesting. You should tell the developers really, because their own Kickstarter launch trailer opens with the words "Monster Training RPG meets Metroidvania". Take em to school kid.

This is my first time hearing of this game. I gotta say, it sounds awesome! For $20, I am definitely interested.
@TG16_IS_BAE indeed it does (look cool, I mean)
@Brydontk what more needs to be said? 😂
@SwitchVogel I know what you mean... But It's kind of the fault of the fans for buying the same game over and over. If the games are still selling, why would game freak need to innovate?
@WreckitRyan yup, I can't wait! Who needs new systems with their $70 games? Not me
@Farflung It’s a bad name for a genre where most of the games share little to nothing with Metroid or Castlevania. It needs to move along, but most people trap these things in boxes. I think this new monster catching game is the furthest thing from a space exploration game. The cliche is only used to sell copies, even if it’s mislabeled.
@ian_beale So even the devs don’t know what they are talking about, is what you are saying. That word is just used to sell copies. Neither Metroid nor Castlevania has turn based battles or monster catching. The devs are afraid to take their new idea and let it stand on its own, so instead they lump it in with another genre in hopes of recognition. Pathetic, when you think about it.
@Dracavius Honestly, it takes me out of my leasure when a game feels like it was crafted for a particular audience, and I'm not invited unless I can pay. But, like, that company doesn't get my internet money, obviously nintendo would get some change, no... Comcast gets my money, and I get to feed their ugly little monopoly. See, to me, comcast's flat rate is to high for a service that they're not still installing at the raw industrial level for 1.me 2.nintendo 3.MonsterDungeonTeam so what is comcast charging me for? Electrical signals? Then what am I paying the electric company for? ISPs want something for nothing in situations like this. Use of lan cables does not cause wear and tear... ergo, internet shouldn't cost so much. In the mean time, having an undiscussed HUGE paywall in games like Monster Dungeon... I can't enjoy myself as well. It's like an option on the menu that says "you're broke, remember, loser?" Or something like that. Thanks for asking Dracavius. May your moves in Smash always have top priority.
Not a single person mentioned the similarities to Azure Dreams. Granted, this is probably a touch too "Pokemon" to reach anywhere near Azure Dreams, it's still nice to see some similarities. I got excited the second they used the term "Familiar" - this is of course all preliminary speculation on my part, as I'm only basing this off the video... but come December we shall see which side of the line this game falls on. Here's hoping it trends more towards Azure Dreams than Pokemon.
