Mojang: Bringing Minecraft To Smash Is The Result Of An "Amazing Collaboration" With Nintendo

Master Chief or Doomslayer at this point with that Bethesda purchase?

Whether you like Steve or any of the other characters, there's no denying it's the biggest crossover of its kind. Very impressive.

I was torn between Master Chief for full Microsoft representation and Doom Slayer for FPS representation.

Either one works for both now, and I couldn't be more excited if any shooter makes its way into Smash. Steve singlehandedly raised my hopes for the second Fighters Pass; what with the low-key, borderline lack of notice, I was fearing Smash was jumping on the "you gave us money for a 2018 game, don't expect hype-worthy characters" bandwagon. Boy was I wrong, and boy am I happy to have been!!!

Anyway, I don't consider Steve to be Microsoft. He belongs to Mojang. Every Minecraft crossover in video games and march was always a Mojang affair, never a Microsoft one. Mojang also published every version of Minecraft except for the PS and Xbox versions. If Minecraft is supposed to be Microsoft property, then what is Mojang doing on the Smash Bros. Copyright list? What do they claim ownership of in the product if not Minecraft?

@backup368 He is writing for an Xbox site. Push Square, Pure Xbox, Nintendo Life and Rock Paper Shotgun are all owned by the same company.

@backup368 I don't think Mojang being on the copyright has any relevance considering that Atlus is on it despite being owned by Sega as well as Monolithsoft despite being owned by Nintendo.

@JayJ I personally don’t want any more Microsoft characters, but it was a point to say that Doomslayer and Master Chief would be another Microsoft character by virtue of being owner by them due to that Betheda purchase the same way Banjo is via buying Rare.

I want Travis Touchdown and Crash. Then I’m good.

I feel that if more people gave Minecraft a chance then they'd understand why it's so good.

Waluigi isnt getting in because mario already has 10 reps.If u dont like steve dont buy him. I wouldnt buy crash or geno cuz i hate them. Especially geno. I have little to no problems with steve. I think it was a great choice. My only problem is the final smash. Shouldve used the ender dragon in some way. Like maybe steve or whatever alt is riding the ender dragon and it breathes dragon breath at you and deals massive damage. The trade off to said massive damage would be a small hitbox for the activating hit. Other than that, cannot wait to see how this character works

@DJ_Cheemstar What do you mean Shantae isn't fit for Smash and Sora is deconfirmed. If anything, Steve getting in proves that anyone really can get into the game.

@backup368 because there's a possibility both own the franchise? I mean, only Mojang was added because Microsoft is already part of the copyright list (with Banjo-Kazooie's inclusion), similar to Personal (only Atlas was added because SEGA were already included) and it makes no difference if the list is re-ordered. There simultaneously crediting Mojang for the creation and Microsoft for owning it.

@TwoThumbs Rare isn't on it. I don't see how its hard to determine where the rights lie. Atlus still controls the IP and any third party deals are dealt with them, even when Sega wants to use the IP such as just recently with PSO2.

@DarkTron Have you played Minecraft Story Mode? There is no mention of Microsoft anywhere in that game. If there were, then yes, that would be an indicator that Microsoft controls the IP. They control the Banjo Kazooie IP because they wanted full control of Rare when they bought them.

@DJ_Cheemstar I see your point, but I would have to respectfully disagree. We do have Bayonetta and Zero Suit Samus in the game, after all. On top of that, neither the Shantae nor Risky Boots spirits were censored, unlike Mythra or Pyra.

If we were comparing Shantae to Mai from Fatal Fury, I would say that the half-genie is a lot more reserved. Mai was created with fanservice in mind; Shantae, however, was not. That's just my silly opinion, though. You have your opinion, and I respect that.

I think Doomguy is far more likely than Master Chief. Unlike Doomguy, Steve and Banjo-Kazooie, Master Chief has never appeared on a Nintendo console.

Still think Crash, Rayman and Bomberman are the biggest names missing. Having said that, anybody disappointed with Smash’s roster has some entitlement issues.

@mousieone Rayman games on the Wii U and Switch are published by Nintendo in Japan. That doesn't make Rayman a Nintendo character now does it?

@mousieone For one, Minecraft is commercially successful, maybe more than 100 times as successful as Bayonetta. Not an exaggeration with only Bayonetta only selling around just 5 million copies.

@DJ_Cheemstar Sora hasn't been directly deconfirmed, he just wasn't coming at the time. He's still in the paws of Disney though. There's still a chance, maybe Sakurai can work his magic for the next game.

Also, the, erm, "chest" of shantae compared to Mai is well, how should I put it, "watered down". They could make it work. I'm still screaming for the Knight (from Hollow Knight) and Dante/Capcom rep besides street Fighter over here.

Edit: let me be a bit more clear, Sora wasn't deconfirmed for the entirety of Ultimate's lifespan, it's just heavily implied. Just because Disney said no at the time, doesnt mean it will never happen
