One of the highlights of Nintendo's latest Partner Showcase was the announcement trailer for Square Enix's upcoming 3D action platformer, Balan Wonderworld. It confirms this new IP will be coming to the Switch on 26th March next year.
If you missed the initial announcement back in July, it's a game from Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima - best known as the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog. They also worked on the 1996 Sega Saturn game, Nights into Dreams, which this game seems to draw inspiration from.
In the new trailer, we got a look at some of the dreamlike stages (there's 12 all up), saw some of the costumes in the game (with over 80 to find), got a look at one of the menacing bosses, and saw some of the co-op play in action.

It looks good, I'm looking forward to more footage.
I need to see more I think,,, I wasn’t really stoked on what I saw. The 80 costumes thing made me feel like most of them will have very limited uses which kinda makes them moot/only useful for specific moments and then probably forgotten?
Serious Nights Into Dreams vibes in here
"Square Enix" and "3d action platformer" in the same sentence sounds odd. But this looks nice so I'll keep an eye on it.
I never expected to see a platformer from Square
March 26th... Same date as Monster Hunter Rise? Guys? Coincidence??
Switch Pro March 2021?!
This looks good and kinda makes me wish these guys still worked on Sonic and Nights.
@neogyo Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. There's a lot about the aesthetics that I like, and learning about the Sonic creator's involvement, and inspiration from Nights, is definitely noteworthy.
But nothing really clicked for me about the game itself. I didn't feel drawn to play it, even if it were at a super cheap $10 price tag. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, and blame it on the trailer focusing more on the story, and not enough on the gameplay elements.
@neogyo @Desrever For me, it just doesn't look like the basic movement is right. The players movement is stiff. There were some nice designs, but even the lighting and effects were not quite right. So, yeah, I felt similar. When I was first watching it, I was thinking that the release date better not be too soon, because they have work to do.
March could be enough to tweak the look and lighting, but if the core control is not natural and fun, that is going to be a problem.
Maybe I'm just comparing it to Mario Galaxy (watching footage lately) which has such great lighting and shader design. And so careful to keep the gameplay elements standing out and clear. Not to mention great fluid control.
@aaronsullivan I feel kind of the same, that's why I'd like to see more footage. I like the idea and the design though.
I'm interested but the movement looks a bit... Off.
80 costumes seems like nothing was left on the cutting room floor...if you know that expression, then you’ll know why it’s possibly concerning
Meh. Totally agree with the above, movement looks weird, costumes look like one-time-use. Nothing that piques my interest so far...
I’ll go back to Dead Cells (addicted!) until I hear otherwise
Gameplay kinda looked a lot “simple”, kinda like the licensed property 3D action platformers of the past where perfectly functional and fun to a degree, but not outstanding.
Of course it’s early days and more insight needed so will reserve judgement. Just glad it’s a new non-indie IP.
I don't tend to enjoy Yuji Naka's non Sonic games much. I have a feeling it will disappoint me like Billy Hatcher and The Giant Egg.
I wondered why it looked exactly like a Sonic game.
Oh wow, this looks awesome. This is what you make when you want to make Nights 2 but don’t have the copyright. 😉
sure it will be good but got damn that framerate is rough. early build but maybe better not to show it vs a jerky mess.
It looks lovely. If it is big enough (Mario Sunshine/Mario galaxy size) it might be retail-version day one for me. If not I'll download it someday at a discount.
Looks good. I'd like to see a little more gameplay.
It looks like Nights 2, but slower and less fluid. Not sure on this, the aesthetic is charming but it looks pretty dull and the costume mechanic not really fleshed out
Why do they look like they are perma-stuck in ice world? (Their legs move and really fast but so little ground covered)
It has potential, but there're a lot of issues with animations and framerates in this trailer. I hope they'll take their time and have enough budget to fix these things before release.
just make another Billy Hatcher
@Scottwood101 Sega's too busy making Yakuza and crappy Sonic games.
Terrible character movement, animations and models. But the environments are nice. It seems like it needs a ton more development on the movement and protagonist models. Shocking for a game with SE's names atm.
Looks great! Now for the reviews
This one looked rubbish.
This game is something that I should be excited for. The people behind it, the concept, the publisher... However, this footage has left me stone-cold.
The pessimism is really strong here. I look forward to the game.
Oh, it's the sonic guys behind this!..... backs away slowly
It'll be fun for a few levels, but it will miss the polish/soul needed for these to actually keep you engaged.
But a man can hope, let's stay positive!
If you told me these guys were working on a new 2D (or 2.5D) ip, I would be interested. This does not look appealing to me, at all.
I'm surprised no one is shouting "Odyssey clone!", especially after all the comments on Fenyx Rising being a BotW clone.
Am I the only one seeing Super Mario Odyssey gameplay here?
And it's not a jab at the game btw. Taking inspirations from good gmes is fine and the game looks unique enough.
My kind of game so was very interested.
My first thought was "A Hat in Time" but so far nobody else has mentioned that one so it must just be be. Did see a little of Galaxy in it, not Odyssey with those graphics, from the costumes.
Will keep an eye on it. Do need to watch the trailer again, Youtube on my Fire Stick for these live shows always look like it's stuttering thru SD so I've learned not to judge the graphics too harshly until I've watched it again.
@Venus_Adept Why the heck do you smell of phosphine?
@COVIDberry At first I thought you were calling me toxic or something, then Google came to the rescue and got the joke LOL.
Great concept, but the way it looks and the animations, environments, general feel, are all little out-dated for me, like a bad attempt at a PS2 adventure game. But it has potential, just needs a ***** load of polish!
Will be giving this a very wide berth. There were many good games on Sega Saturn but I'd never put Nights into Dreams into that category. While graphics were strong for its time, the gameplay was boring. I spent seemingly endless hours playing hoping in vain that it would improve and justify the top price tag. Not for me thanks.
Game looks pretty generic as 3D platformers go, but maybe top hats with eye holes will become a thing.
@maulinks That's the entire reason I will probably purchase the sith out of this game. I buy digital but if it's good I'll buy a physical copy to support their business. We need new platformer IP's. The italian plumber is not doing it for me much anymore. Imho odyssey feels confused and inconsistent from one world to the next.
@BillyB The gameplay was boring??? I don't know if we played the same Nights into Dreams... I had the game proper (with the 3d pad) and the Christmas disc, which was tons of content in and of itself. Of the many words I'd use to describe the gameplay, boring never comes to mind. Fluid, fast, difficult? Sure. If you got gud, you could pull off some really sick aerial acrobatic runs.
looks good, look forward to playing it.
@BillyB wow......after Mario 64 I’d say NiGHTS was the most innovative and enjoyable game from that generation. The gameplay had infinite possibilities to improve your score. It was far more nuanced than anything else I had ever played and was beautifully fluid when you were good at it.
Have you played it on a 60hz Saturn with the 3D pad?
