If you've been keeping an eye on Spiritfarer, the 'cosy management game about dying', you'll be pleased to know that its release date has been revealed. Oh, and that day is today.
Yes, the game should be available to download later today on Switch for $29.99, as well as PS4, Steam, Xbox One, and more. It was first revealed back at E3 2019 and has players taking on the role of Stella, someone tasked with caring for and guiding spirits on their journey to the afterlife.
There's a new launch trailer to check out (see above), and we also have an official description for you:
Spiritfarer is a cozy management game about dying. You play Stella, ferrymaster to the deceased, a Spiritfarer. Build a boat to explore the world, then befriend and care for spirits before finally releasing them into the afterlife. Farm, mine, fish, harvest, cook, and craft your way across mystical seas. Join the adventure as Daffodil the cat, in two-player cooperative play. Spend relaxing quality time with your spirit passengers, create lasting memories, and, ultimately, learn how to say goodbye to your cherished friends. What will you leave behind?
Today's surprise release news came from the Nintendo Indie World Showcase, which featured the animated trailer you see above.

No I don’t wanna cry!
Not my cup of tea, I don't usually play games to feel sad.
I've been looking forward to this one, if it reviews favorably I'll be on the look out for a physical release.
With that price I'm more than ready to wait for a physical release. But definitely interested in this, one of the more impressive games shown today. A whole lot of comfy animation present there.
Not "right now" tho.
This game dose not look like my thing
This Indie Direct was incredible! I do wonder how it will run, but Subnautica almost had me spitting my coffee out. I think I might check Spiritfarer out too, depending on price.
I am gutted with the lack of Silk Song information but overall that was a good showcase and some nice shadow drops of good looking games.
I am happy enough.
If death is so bad, why is everything and everyone obligated to do it? ( sorry, that’s my personal rhetorical question) Death is an interesting subject matter. I just don’t know if I’m interested in that price though. Need some good reviews to sway me.
@MitchK I think ‘incredible’ is an overstatement!
I was so hyped to see the announcement of it being dropped later today! And then the $30 price tag somehow deflated all my excitement. I can wait for a physical copy for that price... or both Star Wars Jedi Knight II / Jedi Academy titles.
Gorgeous game, not sure if it is for me, and I don't have the time anyways, but definitely interest to see some reviews on this one to possibly pick it up down the road at some point. Also, from the looks of it, this game really has that "cozy" vibe going, like that word popped straight into my head a couple of seconds into the trailer and it's not even my native tongue ^^
@graysoncharles Raji looked more mechanical interesting to me than Spiritfarer, plus the mythology seems very compelling, not something we see explored in games that often (compared to say Greek mythology or something that is). I also got a few Prince of Persia vibes, which is always appreciated.
I did not really love the visuals though. They looked a bit cheap, basically like all indie games that go for a more sharp 3D look, without much stylization. Some of the backgrounds and architecture looked quite nice though.
There were quite a few games that looked interesting this time around, including this one. Not going for it right away but I'll keep it in mind.
Unfortunately it's the only one of the shadow dropped games that isn't on sale at launch, which puts me off a bit, especially considering its high price for a digital game. I'd like to play it but might just be patient and throw it on the wishlist for now.
Edit: The reviews so far seem pretty good which is tempting me admittedly.
I just went thru a major death experience in my life. Lost my love after helping her fight thru sickness and debilitation. This game seems to be coming at a perfect time for me.
From what I can tell so far, I think the way they are exploring death in this game is healthy and important. I feel like we could all benefit from having healthy representations of passing on. And supporting each other to the other side. We are so comfortable with violence, yet so afraid to acknowledge the inevitable. The best we can do is love each moment we have together and truly bring meaning to our time that we have.
It's funny to compare the articles about multiplat games on here v. pushsquare. Pushsquare acts like the other versions don't exist, but NL points them out overtly. Lol
This is my kind of jive in almost every way possible!
Looking forward to the EU release! :9
I had to watch my dad die less than a year ago. It was not pretty, and took 8 brutal months of horrid nightmare-inducing suffering. I don’t think everyone does it the same way...but we all have to eventually. I’m curious about this game’s take on it.
What an interesting idea for a game. I will monitor this one closely I think.
@graysoncharles Same. I am so looking forward to Raji. I first know about this game like 2-3 years ago when I vote for it in Square Enix Collective. Been waiting for Steam release.
Also waiting for Garden Story, played the demo on Steam, it was quite fun.
Spiritfarer looks fun too but not that price tag. Maybe will wait and see if there will be a physical.
Buying it immediately
There seems to be a lot of games about death, the spirit world or just 'loss' in general. Don't know if it's a trend or just something I've noticed.
I haven't tried any of those games but cozy management sounds all right.
@Ulysses it's £5.30 on the Russian eshop
@RupeeClock it's currently averagin 88 on metacritic based on 10 reviews. £5.30 on the Russian eshop
It was also up on PC Game Pass. Had no idea what it was, guess I'll check it out.
great style gameplay looks fluid. Not sure if it is great for non purple hair people and soft boys tho
But how much is it on the Russian eshop?
@Scottwood101 how much does it cost on Russian eShop?
@Scottwood101 how much does that cost in rubles on the Russian eShop?
3 games i liked aboit this. Hades, the second one i forgot the name lol and this one looks kinda interesting but will wait for reviews.
For what it's worth, this just got 9/10 on IGN.
This definitely looks interesting! Will be keeping an eye on it.
This actually sounds really unique and poetic, and a healthy theme for most people to explore, but I deal with loss every freaking day in my job. I do NOT need to come home and unwind with a game about it. Sorry but it just hits a little too close to home.
I have the game on XBOX GamePass (PC) so I'm skipping the Switch version. But it's a good game.
Been waiting for this game since its announcement, so I had no issues grabbing it right away. If I love it as much as I think I will (like with Sundered), I will be grabbing the physical edition when that happens too.
@Steel76 it's only £5.31 in the Russian eshop
Just bought it. Im hooked. Price is worth it. Ten times over. I love management games. And gardening. And cooking. And sailing. Its not a sad game at all. Best money ive spent in a long time and can see myself playing this for ages... get it. Trust me. This is going to be your life
Oh, I want the game. But I am still knee deep in ACNH. While I am definitely playing other games while playing AC, I think it would be weird to play to game like each other.
Unless, Spiritfarer is significantly different than ACNH. Any advice, anyone?
@dugan its far better than animal crossing. Vastly different but also similar
@RupeeClock
For now it's digital-only, right?
@RodSD64
For now, but the game looks to be of a certain pedigree that will probably enjoy a physical release.
@KnightsTemplar thanks for the response. Although I have 250 hours in ACNH, i know what you mean by "far better". I love AC, but Spiritfarer looks amazing and i think the story telling will be excellent. While the cost is high, i like to support good art.
@dugan nah dont take my far better than AC sersiously. I never play AC
I'm six hours in. It's really really really good!
It feels like a Studio Ghibli movie with Animal Crossing, Wind Waker, Gris and Fallout Shelter gameplay mixed together.
Supposedly it's between 25-55 hours long depending on if you want to find everything.
Yeah, I'd say this is a GOTY contender for sure!
@Zimon im all aboard with what you say. Do you no where i can find some fat so i can fry my chicken?
