This week sees the release of Crysis Remastered on the Nintendo Switch - there are no delays for this particular version.
Digital Foundry's John Linneman was eager to see how the game ran on the hybrid platform and decided to take a look. As suggested in earlier reports, the game is 900p docked and 720p in handheld mode.
The resolution is capped at 720p in portable, of course, but can also jump slightly above this when docked. Based on information from the developer, the full dynamic resolution scaling range is 540p to 900p while docked, dropping to 400p to 720p in mobile configuration
As for the frame rate, much of the action plays out in both docked and portable mode at 30fps, but it's technically capped at 31fps. If that sounds a bit odd, here's why:
the frame-rate cap is actually 31fps, not 30fps. It may sound like a matter of little importance, but the whole reason 30fps is a developer choice at all is that new frames are synchronised with every other screen refresh - so it still looks smooth and consistent.
As things stand, an extra frame is added every 12th frame and even if the frame-rate is notionally higher, this adds unwelcome stutter. This seems to be an artefact of the last-gen versions of Crysis which mostly went unnoticed as performance was generally so poor

Already pre loaded and ready to go. Since I'll be playing this in portable mode, I'll use my Switch lite. Gyro controls and the satisfye grip will make this a great experience. Also my first time playing Crysis so I'm hyped!!!
Looks really good! Shame there is no physical version so I can’t buy it until it’s massively discounted.
Looks like a well made port. There were definitely some naysayers regarding the Switch version, but I'm glad those folks were wrong.
I'll definitely be downloading this.
Never played it, so I will do that now on Switch. Curious if it feels "old" in terms of gameplay/story.
Also joining the bandwagon of “Never played before but will now”.... always wanted to try it, but didn’t have a gaming rig during its original release - lightning storm claimed my last one and I never rebuilt. Plus I’m not typically into FPS games unless they have some fun/crazy features and/or rpg elements. Aka Borderlands, Bioshock, and Doom... not CoD, Battlefield, etc.
This looks fun ala Farcry, but better in a lot of ways, so I’m sold on trying it for $30
@Yanina not really, you soon get used to shooting people with a howitzer from the seat of your penny farthing.
@Lordplops lol what? Sounds great.
But is it going to be 60 fps on bigger systems? If it is, then we have reduced resolution and frame rate.
@Moroboshi876 Of course there’s always a person that spins the story in a negative way.
What if it is? Can you play your PS4 on a train?
I’ll buy and play it tonight. I won’t wait till other versions to find out if they perform better. Who knows how long that’ll take.
It's a bit wild to think a cheap gaming tablet is now capable of running any version of a game that used to push even higher-end systems back in the day.
This looks like another top-of-the-line conversion for Switch.
@Friendly Why do you have to be able to play a game literally everywhere? What’s wrong with looking out the window of the train?
@Moroboshi876 It’s certainly impressive that this is on the Switch, though there’s no way I can play with those massive frame drops and constant stuttering. Amazing that they cut one of the most interesting missions from the game (Ascension) but this is a system of compromises, after all. That being said, of course the bigger systems will take advantage The extra power. PC will definitely hit 60 and beyond, but I’m not sure about PS4/XOne. I would imagine that those versions look so much better than the Switch, which is why they were delayed.
@TG16_IS_BAE What? You don’t, but the switch has this convenience?
And why would anything be wrong with looking out the window of the train?
I don’t get your questions.
And you say the reason for the Ps4 and XBox one’s versions being delayed is because they look so much better? Is that the reason for their late entrance? Sorry, but you make little sense this morning in these two comments.
@Dm9982 If it’s your first time playing, you should have a blast. I tend to hate FPS games, but this one brings a TON of strategy to the mix, making it feel like a sand box. Not without its flaws, but still fun, just brace yourself for the atrociously bad ending lol
@TG16_IS_BAE Lol thanks! Yeah that was one thing I really liked about Farcry 3 (although it got repetitive fast) was its sandbox nature.
@Friendly Sounds like there might be a language barrier.
@TG16_IS_BAE sounds like it indeed.
@Dm9982 You bet! Hope you enjoy it! This game was the reason I started getting into PC gaming back then. Truly ground breaking for its time.
@Nebnosneh I was wondering about that. Seems like the current trend for Switch games is to push digital, then release “limited” physical copies to boost demand. I kinda wish this game would just get a simple, retail release. It certainly deserves it.
@Friendly I understand what you say, I was just asking, because they don't say it. Anyway, it's rather usual that Switch versions make compromises. And that's understandable, but portability can't always be the selling point or the factor that solves everything. There must be people that plays in docked mode.
This isn't like saying this version isn't worth it. What I say is I'm afraid this time we'll probably get the lesser version again.
@TG16_IS_BAE and @Friendly there is no language barrier and both of you now it.
@Moroboshi876 was being pessimistic and I agree with @Friendly. Crysis for Switch has proved n to be very good port and @Moroboshi876 needed to point out its 'flaws in comparison to other versions'.
He literally spins it in a negative way for no reason where it's obvious you can expect a better performance on the PS4 and XB1.
Wow this looks great!!! Will buy it for sure
@Moroboshi876 You are getting the lesser version again🙄😅,
But like you said that does not mean it ain't worth it. And what I don't get we are discussing this under DF video. Not to say their opinions are like God's, but their viewpoints are highly respected on the technical front of gaming. DF is praising this port, just like they did with DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, Warframe etc despite considering the Switch is flaws.
If that still makes you worry like you will experience another 'WWF2K18' or 'Ark Survival' on Switch than it might not be for you because the well optimized games can still be the lesser version.
Only Alien Isolation seems to have a bit better performance than the other console versions.
@Moroboshi876
Seriously. Three years into the Switch’s life and we’re still having to do this. The Docked Switch version will almost always be slightly worse off Graphically compared to the Hone-only systems because Switch is less powerful. It had to be as it’s portable. But to those who want the extra Convenience of portability (which is a lot of people judging by sales of Portable Consoles over the years) or Gyro aiming in this example; the Switch version is not the ‘lesser’ version. It’s only ‘lesser’ if Graphics are the be-all and end-all to you. Don’t assume that applies to everyone.
@Moroboshi876 You sound like you need a different gaming device. With this game you're getting a ported version that runs respectably as it is. Docked mode does not suddenly make the Switch anymore powerful. You also might want to consider what a ported game is vs a native game.
What I think is funny, is the naysayers from the previous Crysis article, who were all about "Just wait until DF gets ahold of this! They are going to tear it apart! Mwahahaha!" And...well...now we have that Digital Foundry piece...and it sounds like the game, despite some flaws (and promised patches to fix them)...run and looks quite well on the Switch, is a big improvement over the previous console entries (which was another thing the almost anti-Switch crowd was saying, it would be worse than or the same as the PS3 port), and is definitely the Crysis Remastered version that's been promised. It was even recommended by DF as something to play on Switch now! So I'm really curious what the
"Switch is underpowered and sucks!" crowd will have to say now, after this DF recommendation.
I'm gonna do it before anyone else can.
It runs Crysis!
Realistically speaking, coming from the platonic ideal of a PC that can run everything at 4K/120FPS, every system is going to be making some compromises with games. The weaker the system, the greater the performance deficits in higher-end games. Millions of PS4/Xbone owners were fine with playing something like The Witcher 3 at sub-30fps (until a number of patches evened out the performance a bit), and if they're happy with that experience, I don't see anything wrong with it.
What I like about Switch is the unparalleled level of versatility it offers in exchange for losing some of the raw power you get from other modern gen stationary platforms. You don't really get anything out of playing a game like this on PS4/Xbone instead of a PC, but, on Switch, you're loosed from the shackles of the television.
That isn't going to be something that appeals to everyone, and I would invite those people to consider purchasing another platform that better suits their lifestyle, in that case.
Wow, there's a lot of hate here considering it's Nintendo Life, where people usually is respectful with other people's opinions.
Guys, I was just ASKING (not stating) whether it would be another case of cuts in Switch version. There are superb ports on Switch (Doom, The Witcher 2, Skyrim) and I just asked where would Crysis fall...
I don't need another system, I have the Switch and the Xbox One in this generation. And I wasn't deeming Crysis on Switch unworthy. In my first post I was just saying the obvious, not even judging.
Please learn to read.
@Moroboshi876 @Moroboshi876 it’s not a lesser version if you are talking about compromises.
You trade in something to get something in return.
By now you know that you get less fps and lower resolution via the Switch version. But it’s on the go. Make your own choice. For me, convenience outweighs the fps and resolution almost all the time. That said, I was disappointed in the Outer Worlds that took it a bit too far. Can’t wait for a patch on that game. Crysis however, looks way more solid than Outer World. Therefore, convenience is the way to go for me.
Sounds like this is as “unplayable” as Doom, Wolf2, Alien Isolation and the Metro games so I’m definitely getting it. I had a great time unplaying those ports!
Back when this game originally came out on PC it was the benchmark for PC gaming, people used to joke about how you needed a supercomputer to run it smoothly on it's highest settings. The fact that we now have a portable version of it is astounding and a real feat for a handheld console.
@KryptoniteKrunch Every time a port is announced there is always a bunch of naysayers who like to p*ss on everyone's parade, because heaven forbid anyone actually enjoys their Switch and likes to play AAA ports on a portable. I'm always glad when those miserable joyless sods are proven wrong.
I’m a sucker for those impossible ports (if done well of course). There’s something oddly satisfying seeing all those huge AAA titles, next to Nintendo games on the home screen of a portable device. At the moment, this is as close as we can get to every gamer’s wet dream.
DF about halfway through “It’s so rare to see visuals of such quality and richness on a portable device”. Can’t wait to get stuck into this beauty
English lessons needed for some.
I find switch lite has been hard for me for FPS games. Is it a better game than crisis 2, I really enjoyed that and as have got my 360 set up mite give a whirl xxx
Getting for sure, never played and, from the gameplay videos I saw, it seems to be a nice game to play.
Perfect for my commute to work.
Wow, such heavy compromises compared to even the original PC version let alone the upcoming remaster. And cut down to be incomplete because it can't run all the levels. I can't believe people would pay money and support this.
@Moroboshi876 true, but it’s up to the user to apply their own value judgement to those compromises.
By way of comparison:
Switch version of Crysis vs PS4/X1 = lower resolution / frame rate.
Game Boy version of Street Fighter 2 vs SNES = 25% less characters, only 2 buttons, no colour. No idea about frame rate, but I’d wager the resolution is way off too.
The gap between handheld and home console has shrunk an astonishing amount, to the point that we now need to get super technical on the differences, that I bet a vast amount of casual players would never notice.
Yes, the Switch isn’t purely a handheld, and docked mode is still technically inferior to the rival consoles. But it’s up to the user to decide for themselves whether higher resolution (which is also somewhat dependent on the size/quality of your TV) is more important than the flexibility of being portable AS WELL.
I would have definitely bought this had there been a physical version. Boo! Maybe one will be released when the other versions launch? Hope so.
@Moroboshi876 it's 30fps on base consoles. This was confirmed weeks ago.
@gaga64 Of course. You are absolutely right. I for one have bought some games on Switch for sheer portability, knowing that I was missing achievements and better graphics and/or performance.
@kobashi100 Thanks, that's what I was asking.
Sounds like a good port, i don't care for the first so i'm not getting it but it would be nice if the in my opinion better sequels get a remaster.
@TG16_IS_BAE Can't speak for others, but my Fiancee is from Glasgow, and we would regularly do the train journey up, and now we do that journey with our son who has just turned 4.
It's a 3 and half hour train ride.
Anyone know what time it releases today on the eshop? Its almost 11am in the UK and still shows as preorder / wont load when downloaded saying not yet released? I switched off and on but its not that....
@Virtua4 I know!
Keep trying to get it to work and keeps saying it's on preorder still.
@Reprise Exactly I've come across on naysayers on Twitch for example a person was streaming WWE 2K19 on the PS4. I mentioned that I had WWE 2K18 for the Switch and the streamer and others were saying,"oh the Switch can only run Nintendo games." I quickly pointed out that it runs Doom, Skyrim, and The Witcher 3 and said WWE 2K18 was ported lazily. They quickly changed their tune a little but yeah it always makes me laugh how all the Switch haters are quick to bring it down.
I'm definitely getting this game since I can deal with the lower resolution and the fact that it runs on the Switch is enough for me. I wish it had a physical version since I'm limited to my phone's wifi hotspot but I'll just go to my friend's place to download it.
Glad it looks promising so will consider this. I had a good time with Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein 2. I even had Crysis back on PC and while the finale was utter dirge the gameplay leading up to it was pretty good. I was surprised at how well the PS3 version held up (which apparently is the worst) and enjoyed playing through that "cut down" port. I've found the Switch (maybe my Switch) inconsistent with regards to some of these ports tho. Vampyr I consider "nearly unplayable" spent 5 hours with it and enjoyed the story but couldn't carry on playing. Alien Isolation impressed me all the way, until I had a proper look at the Alien, then the frame rate tanked to 5, so haven't played that since. Metro started on the wrong foot (bland and choppy) I persevered a few hours and got bored of the actual game, married to imo not too great performance. So now I check videos heavily before buying anything on Switch.
I'll get when it's discounted. Really looking forward to gyro aim, as this ruined Doom 3 for me for not being included. Gyro is the only way I can enjoy FPS on console after playing FPS for literally 20 years on PC with Mouse+Keyboard...
Yeah, I'm looking forward to playing this on Switch. I appreciate the way he dealt with the frame rate. I was hoping for at least a locked 30fps, but I guess it is impressive that it runs so much better than on PS3 and Xbox 360. I hope they can turn on full frame rate vegetation bending at least during low load times because I think I'm going to enjoy destroying forests as a side activity away from the main game action. It would be nice to not have extra choppy plant destruction. Great analysis and mini review of Crysis on Switch!
ok its available now
cloak engaged!
For £26.99 sounds like they did a great job. What they did with lighting is impressive for a handheld game.
Puts all the broken full price rehash to shame.
But as always, not everyone has portability as their main objective. This was already rejected on PS4/X1/PC so goes to reason some Switch owners will be disappointed also.
Grabbing this on the Switch and my PC. I'll get it on my Xbox One X when it's super cheap. My PS4 continues to collect dust.
@Menchi What is your problem? This is an absolutely amazing port and the nips and tucks are in all the right places - The only cut level - Ascension HAD to be cut due to performance - that level is a system destroyer, hell it made my 8800GTX run at 5-20fps back in the day at 720p.
I don't think you get just how much in the way of physics Crysis is running all at once - this is an incredible conversion - if someone said Crysis would be on a handheld looking like that a year ago I would've laughed.
@liveswired 0/10 on the reply, 0/10 for the port
@Ralizah well you must be playing a lot of games on medium or lower settings to achieve that lol. It's great and all for competitive multiplayer due to the PC arena being plagued by cheaters.
Looks very neat. Im gonna wait 'til autumn, got too many games to play now and should be patched up by then. Dynamic lightning effect is the "Remaster" Id say, sure makes the game look way more realistic, by comparison the older version of the games were everything looks like outside no matter how the light strikes.
Playing it now, but am very unhappy with the gyro inversion. When are developers going to stop linking analog stick and gyro inversion? Very frustrating!!! Please let this be patched soon as I had to turn off gyro aiming all together.
@WhiteTrashGuy turn off aim assist and it’ll flow better.
Already did that. I just can't handle the gyro being inverted. : /
I don' t really care if it looks inferior to other versions. I just wanna know if on handeld mode the game is blurry (like witcher, oninaki or YS when resolution drops).
Have they preserved graphic details at the price of more blurryness or does the game look sharp like Bullestorm??
If it looks as good as Bullestorm and has no blurryness then I'll purchaee it. If they have decided to prioritize details instead of non blurryness then its a no no.
@ss213
I have not noticed any severe resolution drops. Definitely not like Witcher 3.
@WhiteTrashGuy great to know, thanks. I'll give it a try next time Rogue Company servers are down.
@ss213
How is that? Switch Up compared it to CounterStrike which peaked my interest.
@WhiteTrashGuy it has CS feel to it, with some Slatoon flavor also. I am having lots of fun with it. And at the same time it has its own identity. Feels very fresh and addictive.
@ss213
Too late! Downloaded it over the weekend! Everything you said was spot-on. Quick and engaging gameplay. Fun characters and abilities. The thing that is really standing out for me, though, are the maps. Really great layouts; everyone of them.
