Nintendo might have officially stopped supporting Splatoon 2 with regular Splatfest, but it's still updating the game on a regular basis. The popular squid shooter has already received three updates this year, and now to add to this, it's received a fourth.
Below are the full details, according to the official Nintendo support page:
Ver. 5.2.2 (Released June 30, 2020)
Changes to Multiplayer
- Made it so players are unable to dive into ink on a wall and move along an unintended path in the time between using a Booyah Bomb and returning to the ground.
- Fixed an issue in Starfish Mainstage in which players could invade the opposing team’s base if they jumped at the right time on top of a certain part of chain-link fencing.
This latest update follows on from Version 5.2.1 (released 15th June, 2020). The previous update also fixed a few issues tied to weapons and attacks. Check out our existing post to find out more about this.

Alright, cool.
I've been playing this a lot and have noticed how sometimes I end up with all Japanese players, then it might quickly change to all English (maybe all based in U.S.) players. I've also encountered players who must have had hacked Switches. I couldn't splat them at all (it was two players who stayed close together). They seemed to have unending armor. Also played in an octogroup that had a player named MAGA2020 and no one would try if they were on his team (he always lost!). That was pretty cool to see!
I hope they either revive this game with new DLC, or eventually have Splatoon 3 and expand on the Salmon Run mode. By far my favorite mode. I always wanted more maps, and an 8 player mode.
I kinda hoped that that "one off" splatfest they did was not actually a one off, but instead intending on breathing new life into the game.
Hello,
I own Ninjala.
Thanks for the patch notes Liam
This game is good just cant get into it like that I played a long time with this game its just I get board fast and go play a new game for a bit, and yes i don't have this game I played the demo and got it for a bit from a friend.
@Snatcher Likewise, I couldn't stay in the game. Salmon Run, now that was a different story. Maybe Splatoon 3 should take up factions (via ink colors?) and/or an objectives-based approach (think online teams but with "Achievements") to multiplayer (e.g. World of Warships).
@KingBowser86 that sound like a good idea would play move if it had that.
I'm still disappointed that the Octo expansion never received a standalone physical release (similar to Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna and New Super Luigi U). Octo is just a single-player campaign, right?
It seems weird that they keep making maintenance updates, which require effort, but don't continue to have splatfests, which require no effort.
I hate starfish mainstage. That map can toss itself into the trash
I'd be totally down for another Splatfest.
@Heavyarms55 I suspect the "one off" global splatfest was mostly about integrating the servers. Splatoon 2 has always had regional matchmaking versus Splatoon 1's lobbies mostly mixed with Japan. Since the splatfest I've noticed (though not so much in the past week or two) frequently having all Japanese lobbies. Which I actually like because Japan plays the game very differently from the US & EU and I always preferred Japanese lobbies in S1. I'm betting that the global splatfest, including the lack of effort on theme and assets, was somehow necessary to do whatever was needed to switch/test the servers to open them to a return to a global lobby due to declining player base.
Personally I've never liked Salmon Run much. Almost never played it. Though most Westerners only play ranked, mostly TC, RM, and CB and loathe TW. In Japan it's always been that TW and SZ are the most revered modes, also my favorite. To those are the heart of Splatoon since they have the primary focus of the unique painting mechanic. TW and RM feel too much like standard deathmatch/CTF multiplayer to me. CB is just bizarre though, so I can't hate that one.
I like how I'm a beast in English or American servers but the second I join a game with all Japanese people I get destroyed 😔 Also wtf bring back splatfest reruns
I Have Not played Since The One Off Splatfest and I don't think I Will. I had fun while I Was playing it, but now I moved on. And it really surprised me when I booted up my switch to see Jump Rope Challenge DLC, and a Splatoon update.
@CTmatic
Yeah, same. 👍
How are you liking Ninjala, so far? 🤔
Has anyone else here tried Ninjala yet? 🤔
It’s cool, I went back and played a few more matches last night but I don’t think I’m gonna stick with it. Right now I’m almost just button mashing cause it’s so chaotic in matches. Not a bad thing, to be chaotic but this gives me vibes of Dauntless when I binged on that for a week and then never touched it again. Haha @ACNHislit
@CTmatic
Okay, just curious. 👍
I'm sorry to hear that you aren't able to get into it more.
This is probably the most game-changing MINOR update I've seen in a while.
@NEStalgia I'm guessing the integration was done because of decreasing numbers playing regionally. Which was inevitable, since they aren't really supporting the game much anymore.
I've gathered that I'm in a minority of people who really like Salmon Run. But that's pretty typical for me - I almost always tend to be on the outside looking in, with everything. Almost never intentionally.
Absolutely no worries since it’s a free-to-play, it’s a win-win whether I liked it or not.
I may go back to it for a third attempt to get hooked on it, if that one still doesn’t do it I’ll be deleting it.
I bought my physical copy of Wonderful 101 today so I’m starting that tonight. Never played it ever on Wii U so I’m stoked! @ACNHislit
@Heavyarms55 depends how much you play. Back near launch salmon was incredibly popular, so that wasn't an outside view at all. I think for most, it just burned itself out. I just personally never really loved it. I mean I had fun but screaming for help all the time was annoying and i always got myself killed in stupid ways . I much prefer the main game. Then again, from a western perspective, I'm the outsider that loves TW. Nobody loves TW. Japan loves TW.
@NEStalgia I've literally never played a game of ranked in Splatoon 2. My play time is like 40/40/20 Salmon Run, Turf War and Single Player. lol
@CTmatic
Okay, that makes sense. 👍
At least you're giving it a fair shot. Quite a few users on here aren't giving Ninjala a chance, because it's free to play.
Have fun with Wonderful 101. 👍
@Heavyarms55 haha. Ranked with randoms is hit or miss. I honestly don't play it much either. I used to squad all the time with some great players though. Solo and these days it's just TW only and occasional random ranked just to see the old modes. But it's too stressful when the rank glass cracks.
It's funny though because my rank doesn't match my ability as i result. I'm definitely not among the very best..... But i can spar with them and mostly hold my own to a point. So my rank is all the the Bs, and my skill is more in the S+ realm (I was S in Splatoon 1 and never aimed for S+ but played mostly with them privately.). I imagine some very confused kids when they see I'm "only" a B in the lobby
@NEStalgia Honestly I get really annoyed by that kind of thing. I think it's pretty unfair to new players when you have people who are super skilled playing at low ranks in most games.
But I don't know how to avoid it.
@Heavyarms55 ranked only would be the only way. Technically tw shouldn't be using ranks. In Splatoon 1 you'd have real S+ and Cs mingled. 2 didn't the that as much. But it's common for otherwise high skill players with low ranks because they don't play random ranked.
I don't think there's any way to avoid it. The game probably tries to calculate skill in tw for better or worse for matchmaking.
@chardir
I was thinking the exact same thing man!
