The Kickstarter campaign for Curse of the Sea Rats has officially ended. As you might recall, it achieved its original goal of €15,000 in just nine hours. So how did it wrap up? It absolutely smashed this target in the end by 1600% - reaching all of its stretch goals. Thanks to the support of almost 6,000 backers, it has been able to secure €242,395 of funding (which roughly equates to $275,000).
This hand-drawn Metroidvania featuring 4-player local co-op (and starring heroes transformed into rats) will now be released on multiple platforms - including the Nintendo Switch - in the first half of 2021. It includes five playable characters, special abilities to upgrade, 12 hours of gameplay for the main quest, and also features a survival mode, new game plus mode, and hardcore solo mode.
Below is a bit of additional information about the game from the PR, and above is the trailer.
Packing all of the best features from the metroidvania genre, Curse of the Sea Rats features beautiful 2D animation and 3D environments, combined with unique real-time combat mechanics.
Explore the island, battle diabolic creatures, and fight brutal bosses commanded by the evil pirate Flora Burn. Forge your own path to freedom in a non-linear quest through the vast and mysterious coast of Ireland in 1777.

I've taken a punt on this. Been burned by Kickstarter before but it seems that I never learn.
It looks really good, actually. I mean, it still needs to improve some things here and there, but it seems they're going in the right way. I like what I see, if it finished being a polished game I'll get it day one. They have time to make it shine.
"Hey dude, you got the cash for this month's rent?"
"No dude, you?"
"No."
"OK. You know what to do."
"Yeah. METROIDVANIA KICKSTARTER!!!"
getting big Monster Boy vibes
@JohnnyC You talk as if this game didn´t have a lot of work behind XD (and it´s even hand-drawn). If you think it´s so easy to make something like this, I encourage you to do it.
I love the look of the animation, I hope they improve the game backgrounds.
@the_beaver It's a joke about the high volume of metroidvania kickstarters associated with the Switch, not a detailed commentary on the development of the game. I'll happily acknowledge that some great games started life like this (fingers crossed this is one of them), but so did a significant amount of dross.
@estaate Agreed, I think the backgrounds is where they phoned it in. The line weight doesn't match that of the foreground characters and some of the animated effects have NO outline at all. Just feels like the characters belong in another game.
See Wonder Boy for how to do it properly if you're going to have lines in your background. Even Monster Boy did it right, painted backgrounds Outline on Main Characters. Rayman as well, no outlines across the board.
I appreciate that the concept is sound — very much influenced by Disney Afternoons with maybe a hint of the character interactions of Bluth works, hopefully.
Does seem like the backgrounds could use some touch-up. And the walk/run cycles seem off. Or was it collision detection? Or both? It was hard to give the trailer my full mental focus seeing as it's a Kickstarter and those have way past run their course. Will be looking for reviews.
@KingBowser86
Yes! Bluth works vibe. I couldn't place the look but that's it.
Happily funded this.
