After stating the Switch iteration of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night would be in line with other versions back in March - a few months later, 505 Games announced the next update for Nintendo players would arrive a little later than the rest.
Nearly three weeks on, and the Switch version is now truly up-to-date with the other releases. This new and free content includes a new mode called 'Randomizer' (replacing the previously planned Roguelike mode) and the character Zangetsu.
Here's a bit about both, along with a trailer:
Zangetsu - Once you have completed Bloodstained and gotten the “Good Ending”, you will be able to choose Zangetsu to play through the game a second (or thirtieth) time. Once selected, players will be able to play through Bloodstained using all of Zangetsu’s movement and combat abilities. Zangetsu is not a shardbinder, so he does not use shards as Miriam did. Instead he uses the power of his sword to dispatch enemies along with some special abilities that consume MP.
Playing Bloodstained as Zangetsu is designed to be a different experience than playing as Miriam with a focus on fast-paced combat. Consumables, equipment, crafting, treasure chests, quests and story cutscenes are disabled when playing as Zangetsu.
Randomizer - Randomizer allows you to adjust eight different game parameters to mix up your experience as you play through the main story of Bloodstained. You will be able to adjust the goals of their overall playthrough and quests, the location of save and warp rooms, shops, key items and also enemy drops.
For example, you could set up a game where enemy drops (shards & items) are totally mixed up, meaning that you could end up with the ‘Release Toad’ from an ‘Aello’ instead of a Toad.
Finally, you’re able to access the seed of your randomized game in case you want to write it down and keep it for reference or share it with others. The game also provides a timer to track how fast you are able to complete the game, so if you share a seed, you can compare who can complete the course the fastest.

But does it run better now?
@dewokkel exactly, I was waiting on this update to find out if I should buy it on PC or Switch.
If performance is good on Switch, I'd gladly take that version.
The new character is just as basic as the Richter / Julius modes from previous IGA games. The fact that this mode had entire trailers dedicated to it and was released after an entire extra year of development made me think it was going to be much more substantial than it ended up being.
There is basically no extra story content, just an extra quick runthrough of the castle without the progression blockers in place.
@dewokkel That's the question we all want to know. More character and stuff is nice if the game is good. Anybody can say if it has improved with this patch?
If the performance is fairly steady I will finally look at buying this. I initially put it off until "I" felt it was finished.
I beat this not too long ago and performance was good the first half of the game. Then there was one area that was just downright bad to where the frame rate chugged. After that area I noticed the frame rate didn't hold up as well in the later stages. I still enjoyed the game but if it had started that way I might not have enjoyed it nearly as much.
I really enjoyed the Randomizer included with it. It was wild. The only movement tech I found for the first 8 hours was Dimension Shift. Made for a cray game.
Werent the performance patches done a while ago? I just got the game 2 weeks ago, and it doesnt have any of the performance issues it had on launch.
@dewokkel ..... waiting on a full comment on this too.
Never bought due to the reported issues....
Hated this on switch, tried it on PS4, and honestly this game just does not work very well. It’s also hideously ugly. I wanted to like so bad, but it is such a mess imo
I think the day 505 announces "...this'll be the final patch..." is the day I will finally launch the game on my Switch.
The game still runs like they made it on a potato.
Even if it ran better, it's an ugly mess of a game.
Um... Whens co-op?
Waited for a price drop and graphics up grade for the Switch...didn't wait that long picked it up on PS4. Seems like it would of been a easy game to optimize on the Switch guess not.
@Tim_Vreeland The thing is that they promised the Switch version to be on par with the rest, and that was still very far from true. I don't know after this patch, though.
This game seriously needs some bug fixing patches. I play it atm on PS4 and sometimes the character won't react to my inputs or will react to it with delay. Or the game crushes while starting the game. This is really frustrating.
I still seriously don't understand how the developers screw up a port for a METROIDVANIA game. A PLATFORMER METROIDVANIA game.
The developers should downgrade the graphics to the exact graphics as Curse of the Moon and I bet the game would not only run better but be better in every way possible. The graphics were better looking in Curse of the Moon anyway.
Totally forgot about this update! I’d love another reason to go through the game. Not tooooo interested in the randomizer mode but playing as David Hayter, I mean Solid Snake, I mean Zangetsu sounds really cool and something I’ll be trying out.
@Spoony_Tech they should of just release the patch to fix some of the graphics/resolution in the game before releasing a new mode/characters it just shows how lazy 505 really is.
@Faucet no its not the switch faults this switch version issues are the result of laziness from the 505 devs they only cared about the other console versions doing better reason why they wasted the delay on the switch version by not polishing up before it release and no wonder why switch base got seriously pissed with these guys.Im hoping iga doesnt use these guys for potential sequels
Update doesn't seem to be live in NA yet, but it's not quite noon so maybe then. I've played the Zangetsu mode once but I'll gladly take this excuse to blast through it again!
I bought this for switch and finished it a while back. I thought it ran fine except there was a loading issue in a few areas but i heard it's been patched now. Excited to try out the new modes. You have to have finished the true ending for it to work though I hear.
@Stu13 The update was available in NA at least 3 days ago when I downloaded it.
I expected more from BloodStained ..
@Zyph same goes for animal crossing. Except I've ready played it. But I will go back when it actually feels complete
I really wanted this for Switch, but the performance differences were just too much to bear. I'm currently on my second play-through on PS4. I really like the game, but I'm not interested in playing it handheld that badly.
At least they tried, I guess.
My fisical copy of this waste of money keeps me from playing, sometimes I have to re insert the game plus to five times to get it to work. If this ends iga's carreer I won't be surprised
I think I'm finally ready to start playing my physical copy of the game which has been sitting there for about a year.
@RPGamer You should be able to get the patch by putting the game card in, and then checking for updates.
Yay! A randomizer might make this game be not terrible, as I won't know whether or not the new enemies in the 5-10 room hallways that lead nowhere until 5 hours later will actually give me something useful, which makes them not a complete waste of time! Plus, it also fixes the atrocious upgrade design in the sewers by making it so that most major upgrades will be attached to random enemies instead of there only being 1! Maybe it will actually be better than Aria now. Too bad it can't fix the mandatory equitable upgrades that should have been permanent but are mapped to shards for some god awful reason.
@RiasGremory I think they already did what they intended to do. I played the game after the patch that said most of the issues were fixed. If I played the better version I dont even want to imagine what it was before that.
@clvr get it on PC. It looks dreadful on Switch and the frame is only a kind of solid 30fps. It runs much better than at launch, but actually looks even worse in spots now and still has performance hiccups. I regret not buying it for Ps4. Btw this patch added nothing toward the performance fas as I can tell.
@TheNewButler buy it elsewhere if you can. It will be cheaper and actually look really pretty. Prob my biggest regret purchase last year (not getting it on PS4).
What a mess. A year later, and they haven´t fixed it yet... This will go with them forever. A pity, cause it could´ve shined on Switch (perfect console for 2D metroidvanias), but oh well.
@Dang69 hey, thanks a lot for your recommendation! I've been on the fence for a ling time about this game because I hoped on Switch it'd match the other versions one day, but if that's not the case I'll get it on PC.
Thanks again!
@dewokkel that's what I wanted to ask. Maybe it's the first question everyone is asking.
I have been playing the physical copy of this game on Switch since launch. The controls initially had some very noticeable lag, but once you are able to speed your character up, the lag disappears. It did crash on me a few times, but I have not had a single hiccup in 40-50 hours of play since then. I guess I'm not noticing all of the major flaws everyone keeps shouting about, but I have been having an absolute blast with this game for almost a year. Too bad for those who refused to give it a shot!
I was a bit disappointed with this and haven't got back to it. Yooka-Laylee started out kinda rough and even though it still isn't 100% smooth on the Switch, Playtonic improved upon it and made it really good and followed it up with a great sequel. I was hoping Bloodstained would be the same.
@Dang69
Thanks for mentioning the elephant in the room! I had to sift through a million useless comments to finally read one that addressed the performance on Switch vs PS4.
@TheNewButler maybe...but while i do feel the same way about things when considering which system to a game for...sometimes when you go with the Switch version, and the version feels bad, you don't end up playing it much anyway
@clvr no prob man!
@Hordak Dude. Saying, "The controls initially had some very noticeable lag, but once you are able to speed your character up, the lag disappears" is a totally deceptive to put it. The initial lag had nothing to do the character speed - it had actual bad input lag. That got patched.
Can we not just be happy that they have actually released this on Switch?
For the people that can deal with the alleged performance issues, I am sure they are going to love this as it sounds like a really neat extra which often only appears on hacked games of old.
While I haven't yet got round to actually playing it (it remains in my cartridge case) I am excited to finally play it when I do.
Further we all know when we get a game that is multiplatform we do expect it to be worse on Switch and accept it, while this is unfortunate it is expected from the least powerful console.
This however is now reeking of dexit, get over it, if you don't like it go ahead and dislike it, but you don't need to bring it up every time there is an article an slate it like your word or views are gospel. We all have opinions but I can see from slating people have been completely turned off this despite others saying it runs generally fine, which is a shame.
@RPGamer Not sure if anyone got back to you yet but just wanted to let you know that I picked up the physical copy of this game last christmas and the patch does, infact, load right up. I never had an opportunity to play pre-patch (and I have yet to install this new one) but I thoroughly enjoyed this game and had no issues with it both docked and hand held.
