Streets of Rage 4 launches this week, bringing to an end a 26-year wait that has been pretty unbearable for hardcore fans.
Created by Lizardcube, Dotemu and Guard Crush Games, this fourth entry in the series brings Alex, Blaze and their friends into the HD era – and we think it's pretty special, as we awarded it 9/10 in our recent review.
The game includes a whole host of extra content, including a gallery section which includes concept artwork for a bunch of unused character designs. It also shows what some of the included characters could have looked like.
If you'd rather discover these pieces of art for yourself, we'd advise against scrolling down the page any further – but if you're feeling brave then let us know what you think of them by posting a comment below.
First up, here's some alternative designs for the likes of Blaze, Floyd and Cherry:
Next up are some unused characters which never made it into the final game, including some returning enemies from previous entries in the series:
Finally, we've got some mock-up screens which came from very early in development and prototyping – it's interesting to note that there's a 'Rage' meter at the bottom of one of the screens:
Streets of Rage 4 launches on Switch on April 30th.

One of those designs looks like Josuke mixed with Kunio-kun.
Where's Roo / Vickty?
@MagnaRoader Roo's in the game. I'll leave it to you to spot where when you play it
@Elvie I KNOW!! Having just finished part 3 of JoJos, my immediate thought was "That looks like Josuke".
Blaze has always been my favorite. Really like that her SoR 2 look is back.
Not gonna lie... a MISSED opprotunity leaving alot of these out. Should just left them in as swappable skins. sigh.. these look Awsome. some even bettter than whats in the game now.
Such amazing artistry. I hope they can find someplace to use some of those unused designs are they are incredible.
I rarely buy digital games on day one. This is one of those rare times.
I haven't been into this particular approach to Streets of Rage 4, and the review leaves me with concerns involving the game play and some of the choices made. Not every game will land for everyone. Like many, I am not fond of the visual style. I noticed some of the alternate concept designs in a video they put out. I really think some of the alternate designs are better than the final ones. The second and third designs(from the left, top row) of Blaze both look really good to me. And I think the characters look so much better without the thick black outlines. It makes a big difference, at least to me.
Did the likes of Electra, Abadede and Raven not make it at all, or just those particular designs? They look too good not to use.
I love the concept artistry here. Gotta find out if the artist(s) involved have an Artstation...
It being, in name at the very least, SOR4, is something to celebrate. The weak art-style, and unjustified and unproven $25 price tag makes me want to play my 3D SOR2 on 3DS, for a while, until an inevitable sale. P.S. if they used the SOR2 art style, it would have been a day 1 purchase, with a lot less effort.
@Moistnado whilst art style is incredibly subjective (I for one think it looks great, a real good modernisation of the classic look) it seems a bit harsh to say that the price tag is unjustified (don’t quite understand the ‘unproven’ aspect of your comment). All the reviews I’ve seen so far seem to have nothing but praise for the game (Eurogamer even rated it as ‘Essential’!).
I miss skates but I into the new I can't wait till tomorrow.
Electra, Bear, Raven, and Abadede. I wish they were in this game.
A shame about Abadede. I kinda liked pounding a jacked up Razor Ramon.
Oh well. We might see some of this content restored in future DLC.
Can’t wait to play
does anyone knows this art style's name? pls answer
