Streets of Rage 4 might not have a release date yet, but that hasn't stopped DotEmu, Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games from revealing more about this upcoming release. Following on from the news the legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro would be returning to help out with the newest entry in the series, Olivier Derivière has now been revealed as the fourth outing's main composer.
This talented individual has previously worked on the soundtracks for A Plague Tale: Innocence, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Dying Light 2. He'll also be receiving support from a number of guests musicians, including contributions from Scattle (both Hotline Miami games), Das Mörtal (Hotline Miami 2), XL Middleton, and Groundislava.
I’m very grateful and humble for being the main composer on Streets of Rage 4. Of course the legendary @yuzokoshiro has also brought his magic! Many thanks to @Dotemu @Guard_Crush @lizardcube and @SEGA to have given me this opportunity!
When queried over on Twitter about who would be covering what in the game (as touched on in the video above), Olivier explained how Yuzo wrote "every" iconic music track such as the main theme, character selection, intro level, and "some" boss fights, whereas he contributed the following "all new" material:
I wrote all the levels in dynamic music celebrating 25 years of music styles since the last SOR
If you like the sound of this, feel free to head over to Limited Run games and pre-order a classic or standard edition of the game for Nintendo Switch.

So this release date then eh Sega ?
Sounds like a great mix of talent, fingers crossed it will all come together soon.
Such an odd move. Sega know how critical Yuzo Koshiro was to the success of the original series. Instead of giving the entire soundtrack to him, they give him one or two guest composer slots, and give the bulk to an unknown. From what I've heard of his music, I'll be playing the game with the music off. It sounded terrible.
SoR 1 to me has the best audio atmosphere. I know everyone says 2 is the peak of the series but for me the first game had the most cohesive vibe
I am sure this new guy will do a good job of the soundtrack, but yeah, why not just pay Yuzo Koshiro to do it all considering the stakes of such a high profile game.
I cant wait for this. I got my preorder In for the physical copy. This music is amazing.
Please be good!
I am definitely interested in seeing how this all turns out.
This is going to be either the biggest disappointment or best game of the year for me. I have doubts but I really hope they pull it off.
I will have this day 1, and I am excited, but this video did nothing to ease my musical fears I have of this game and only increased my anxiety that this game will fall short of the soundtrack expectations that have inherently come with it.
Perhaps a small French indie studio only has a small French reach (along with a small Sega budget), but I'm a little disappointed that the original music creators weren't given the entirety of the soundtrack so it would , without a doubt, have that original Streets of Rage flavour... The way Tropical Freeze was given entirely to David Wise, that soundtrack is an absolute masterclass in video game music composition... It pulls from the old, and remixes it with new, modern techniques and tries to steer clear of contentious music genres. In my opinion, Tropical Freeze is the absolute best soundtrack ever created for a video game.
I'm glad the composers aren't trying to "replicate" the previous Mega Drive games. That would be a mistake. However, in my opinion the music should have been a purposeful call back to electronic music of the 80s/90s. It should have been that electronic/synth music with a modern twist. Remixing some old classics with new technology. Every note should attempt pluck the strings of nostalgia using the music making technology of today... Not Dubstep.
I know that the original SoR soundtracks were trying to pave new ground and trying new unproven sounds, and they succeeded. That is why those games are timeless... But this game should not be trying to do that. It is a new climate across the video game landscape and Streets of Rage does not carry the same weight it once held.
I will be getting this day 1, but while I have heard some extremely promising music (the synth music in the Floyd reveal trailer is astonishingly good), I dunno, Dubstep over Streets of Rage levels just sounds horrible to my ears... Maybe I just don't like Dubstep... Like most people...
Is there a release date?
@ramu-chan Dotemu's statement:
"Yuzo Koshiro's schedule is quite busy and he couldn't jump into this project as Lead Composer due to schedule incompatibility and we can't and won't blame him for this. But his contribution to the project is quite significant with several tracks like the main theme of the game. Same goes for Motohiro Kawashima. We also jumped on the opportunity to bring a fresh and modern vision to the project by bringing Olivier Deriviere in."
Track list is also out. Yuzo Koshiro did 5 tracks.
