If for some reason you've always wanted the action RPG Code of Princess on the Nintendo 3DS but still haven't got around to purchasing it after all these years, now is the time to take action. Next week, on 31st March, Atlus will be removing the game from the eShop. Here's the official tweet confirming the news:
While no reason was provided, we'll take a guess and say it's to bump up sales of the enhanced version - Code Princess EX, which was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. Code Princess was originally made available here in the west in 2012.
Will you be downloading this title while you still can, or have you moved on to the Switch port? Leave a comment below.

I heard this version has an English dub while every other version does not.
I personally don't mind the lack of a dub in other versions, but there's that for those considering picking this version up before it is removed.
I mean, people can just pick it up physically second-hand, right?
The digital future.
If I'm not mistaken isn't the Switch version published by Nicalis? Maybe with the game not in Atlus' hands anymore, they can't sell new copies after a certain date?
Is this worth buying? Any games similar to it? I remember hearing good things about it but never gave it a look.
If the enhanced version was released on Switch in 2018, why remove the 3DS version now?
I hope this isn't a sign of Nintendo already starting to take down 3DS online functions. It's way too early for that!
@OdnetninAges Code of Princess on the 3DS did have an English audio track missing from the fairly recent Switch/PC EX remaster. It's probably my biggest gripe against the game. The voice acting which included Laura Bailey was great and I'm really surprised it wasn't included even as an optional eShop download (or as purchasable DLC). But I suppose it's pretty standard for it's developer Nicalis to not add any patches or fixes to their games once released. The EX version also largely runs at around 720p which is my other disappointment with this game. While it's an enhancement over the 3DS, it's not nearly as impressive as it could have been. Still the game is great, I own a physical copy on Switch, it just had potential to be the definitive version of the game and fell short.
Is this North America only then? I don't think Atlus are the publishers in Europe.
As @RR529 noted, Atlus' rights to the 3DS version are likely expiring. Nicalis published the remastered version on Switch.
I recently found a complete-in-box collector's edition for 3DS for a great price, so fortunately I have both versions now ^_^
The most logical explanation could simply be that rights have expired and Atlus didn't see the benefit to renew them, they're only responsible for localization duties (they don't localize third parties anymore). Some titles formerly published by them are now under other companies like NISA or in this particular case Nicalis. Also it's relevant to mention this is not the first time a title is pulled from the eshop, it also happened with Tetris GB and Project x Zone
sounds like the license expired. It’s a fun beat em up with som rpg elements.
what do you guys think of code of princess, i have it on 3ds... thought the movesets were super shallow
@Ralizah Not in Europe unfortunately. The PAL release was digital only. I have it, but I guess I'll redownload it, just to be on the safe side...even if it wasn't that great of a game.
I bought this game physically when it first released on the 3DS, which I still have. Beat it back then. Haven't gotten the Switch version yet. Perhaps soon enough.
@Tourtus Code of Princess was a spiritual seccessor to Guardian Heroes a Sega Saturn game.
@Nico07 I didn't realize that Laura Bailey was in the 3DS version.. it is kinda odd that they removed her from the Switch version especially with how popular she has become.
I remember grabbing this at release. The English dub was surprisingly good and the soundtrack had a couple of bangers courtesy of ACE. The story and gameplay were enjoyable enough, though I never found anyone to play online multiplayer with, which was a bit of a shame.
I have both 3ds and switch versions. But the lack of the stellar voice acting in the switch port really ruins an otherwise great game, so much so I can't bring myself to actually finish it.
I downloaded it when it originally released on the 3DS. Not an amazing, but an entertaining best em up.
Shame to see the best version get pulled from the eShop
Shame it's a good game. I'm just glad I got the physical version.
Yeah, man. Let me overpay to a terrible publisher for a port that cut out the wonderful English voice track which was a clear highlight of the 3DS version. lol get tossed, Nicalis.
Does the European Version have voice acting too?
I forgot this game was on the Switch. It’s not a bad 3DS game at all. I may pick it up on a sale for Switch.
In b4 the mouth-frothing anti-digital people get here to extrapolate their hearts out.
...also this is for the best, game runs like ass on 3DS.
What they NEED to do is add the funny English dub to the Switch version!!!
I wonder... maybe Nicalis was not able to get the rights to the dubbing of this game and had no other option but to port it to the Switch without the English dub?
Maybe Nicalis had a lower budget and didn't want to pay the voice actors their share?
Then again aren't all of Nicalis games in Japanese only? Maybe they chose to keep their port undubbed on purpose?
@GameOtaku yea, that's how I felt, too... like I don't have anything against the Japanese dub, and my Japanese is actually decent enough to understand maybe 40% of the game without subtitles, but I guess I'm really just attached to the stellar and incredibly funny English dub of the game from playing the 3DS version yeats back that the game just doesn't feel the same... like hearing that zombie say "here"s a curse" in her deas, monotone voice was HILARIOUS!!"
Everyone's talking about the removed dub, but for me, not being able to allocate stats yourself in the Switch version is the bigger dealbreaker.
@JedRock
The tavern scene especially just feels bland in Japanese, but really funny in English (the sage and the wenches three!).
The Switch version is the best anyway.
An English dub is nice, but the better performance is more important.
@Tasuki It would have been nice if they had added the English dub as an optional download from the eShop. But that would have been very unlike Nicalis. So because of that the 3DS version is worth picking up as well, even though it does run at 10 fps at times.
Had me worried about them closing the 3DS eShop for a second there. Still need to download classic virtual console games before that happens.
@Tasuki Thanks for the response!
I played Guardian Heroes before, I didn't like it so I guess I'll skip this.
@Tourtus Yeah if you didn't like that game you won't like this.
This is why digital only future is a scary future for us consumers, don't support this consumer toxic practice!
@ReaperExTenebris Would agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that download sites like pirate bay or rom-sites have been pushed to the point where the amount of traffic and download items have drastically been reduced because of either threats of lawsuits or governmental entities pushing them to shut down servers or stop their services/distribution of roms.
Compared to how things used to be, things have definately changed for the worse. Also, problem with digital only is that the publisher will have all the power to manipulate the legal agreements attached to a game and fully control how a consumer can use something they bought and paid for, which is an awful practice.
I preferred this on 3DS. The enhancements didn't really enhance anything for me.
You can ALWAYS mod your 3ds and install the undub version on any model.
I have the deluxe 3DS version. I'll never support digital.
Is it being removed from the european e-shop or just US ?
I don't understand the anti-digital comments. I get that secondhand copies won't be available, but removal from the eShop is no different than it not being available new from physical stores. And anyone who did buy it still has it and can redownload it beyond this date. It's just not for sale anymore.
And it's been available for the better part of a decade.....amazing how some people only seem to want a game the second it's announced it's being pulled, but didn't during the previous 8 years.
@Tasuki Well, thanks for a game recommendation, I guess. As I was browsing through the comments in this article here, I saw your comment mentioning Guardian Heroes, so I looked up a video of the game. As a side-scrolling beat em up fan, it looked like an interesting title, so I decided to buy it on Xbox Marketplace, seeing as it was less than 5 bucks now, so well worth the risk.
I found it to be an enjoyable game, although the whole "fighting on three planes" thing can get a bit annoying at times. But all in all, still a good game, so thanks.
@ThanosReXXX You're welcome 😆. It's good to know that is still available on the MS marketplace I might have to snag it.
I remember reading about it in a gaming magazine years ago for it coming to the Saturn and thought the whole 3 plane idea was sooooo cool lol, but mind you this was a time when all beatem ups were like Final Fight and Double Dragon.
IIRC Guardian Heroes has some replay value too different paths to choose from and such plus the fact that you can always gain more levels on a character. It's been awhile since I played that game.
Have you by chance played Code of Princess?
@Tasuki Yeah, you should. At less than 5 bucks, it's an absolute no-brainer for beat 'em up fans. And it works on both last gen and current gen Xbox systems, so that's a nice bonus.
As for Code of Princess: no, I haven't. That looks pretty good as well, so if I can grab it from a bargain bin somewhere for the 3DS, I'll get it, but seeing as it's still around 30 bucks now, and I've already bought more than I should this month, I'm going to put it on the "some day" list...
@ThanosReXXX Understandable. If you enjoyed Guardian Heroes then I do recommend Code of Princess.
Hopefully you will be able to find it in a bargain bin especially with it being delisted from the eShop. You can go the Switch route as well but I don't know how that one is compared to 3DS. I heard that the changes are minimal but I can't say 100%
@Tasuki From what I've understood, the upgrades/changes are minimal, but I think that I'd rather enjoy the 3D effect in this one, so I'd rather stick to the 3DS version.
@ReaperExTenebris I don't underestimate at all, as I am one of them. But it's gonna be a long road until devs/publisher back off to the point where we don't have these abusive functions in our games or greedy game concepts that cheats us to pay more.
Legal thing, you're right but there have been examples of where devs/publishers went way too far and was able to do so without being stopped. EA is a good example, they have/had a part of the user agreement that stated, if you were inactive for a year, they could delete your game and remove the license attached to your user. Another problem with digital games is the fact that, if you delete your account, you lose all your games. You should have the right to buy something and have the CD key to download it from THAT server whenever you wanted regardless of you having an account or not. And then it is also the issue with hacking.
I already have this game on PC & I've yet to play. Should get round to it but if i was a digital copy of the 3ds version there's ways that can be achieved
