The launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is rapidly approaching and, reminding us of this fact beautifully, is the news that you can now pre-purchase the game from the Nintendo Switch eShop.
If you load up the store and scroll through the 'Coming Soon' section, or if you simply search for the game using the search bar, you'll now find the option to hand over your £49.99 / $59.99 and have the game ready waiting for you on launch day.
You probably don't need us to tell you, but this is the best way to purchase if the game if you're wanting to play it the moment it goes live. The Official Nintendo UK Store is also offering digital codes for the game alongside physical bonuses at no extra cost, or you could always opt to go physical.
Remember, if you have any Nintendo Switch game vouchers, you'll also be able to use these towards a digital purchase.
Feeling the hype? Will you be pre-purchasing the game immediately? Let us know in the comments.

Physical for me. Animal Crossing isn't a bad game to have digitally but I pretty much always chose physical if given the choice, plus it's cheaper even after factoring in the eShop vouchers.
@theiRiS Really? Every Animal Crossing game is more or less the same sort of thing so anyone who's ever played one already knows just about everything you need to know. Plus they've already shown off a lot of the new stuff on top of that. I don't know what else we would possibly need to know. Plus it's not like preorders can't be cancelled (physical ones at least) at most places if for some reason you were to change your mind closer to launch.
@theiRiS Well... I'm using a voucher for it and going to play it anyway. Whatever the reviews will say.
I'll preload it as soon as I get my new AC themed switch. No point doing it now
Pre-loading now
Animal Crossing is one of the few games I will always get digitally if given the chance. Its a game I know I will play daily for months or even years - and it is handy for me to have on my console at all times.
I usually go physical for most, having New Leaf on my 3DS all the time was very handy for me.
..or you could buy it on launch day.
Shopto have a download code pre-order available for £38, which is the cheapest physically and digitally, so it’s probably best to go there if you want a digital preorder and don’t care for the bonuses,
I wish articles like this put the actual release date in the article. Always confusing as to why basic info is left out.
Are they giving double gold points for pre-purchase?
Just Pre-Loaded.
it also comes with 7 day trial for Nintendo Switch Online (for anyone who didn't know that or hasn't own it yet.)
@theiRiS It's Animal Crossing, not some new, untested I.P. We already know what it's going to be like. And having it preloaded means I can start playing as soon as it unlocks.
Would pre-order today, but seriously holding off until they sort out the backups.
I will not buy this game if I am not allowed to infinitely duplicate troll islands and view all of the content within a few hours and post it on YouTube a year before anyone is supposed to see it. Also what if i need to transfer to the switch pro that was deconfirmed?
Will be ordering the cart from Nintendo store (all about the pins!) can anybody who has ordered from the UK store shed some light on their delivery? I have always used amazon before and received it on release day, is this likely to be the case with Nintendo store? Just a little worried because I am trying to preorder and it’s only giving me the standard delivery option, dont really want to wait a week for it post release.
So could I buy this digitally and be able to play it on my Switch Lite & docked Switch? Or is it one digital purchase, one download to the system I use the voucher on? Would hate to download it digitally to one I don't use as often. Really confusing & super unnecessary move from Nintendo on this 🙈
Using my last remaining Nintendo Switch Online game voucher to get this. But since Nintendo is still iffy on the whole transfer thing, I'm not going to download the game with my voucher until I have my Animal Crossing Limited Edition Switch picked up from the store and I've done my system transfer. Then I'll pre-download the game (because the system releases one week before the game does in Canada).
@Kilamanjaro 1 island per switch
@theiRiS You never played an AC before right?
Pre-downloading now. March 20th couldn't arrive soon!
@Crockin so would I have two islands then?
@Kilamanjaro correct, as long as you have 1 physical copy of the game.
Digital for me. I always buy physical copies, but AC is the exception.
With big first party games I always buy physical as well but I’m going digital for this one so it’s always easily accessible ☺️
Already downloaded. Used my second token on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. My backlog is silly.
I'm still concerned about the Sava Data stuff, IF a Switch Pro comes, or I break my Switch, I don't want everything to be lost!
Obviously, I'm still gonna buy on release date but still.
Let the preloads began!
gonna pass until they figure out the save data backup situation
im very tempted to get a digital copy but i plan to buy a new switch for myself when it comes out. so i might just buy a physical copy i can share with my switch and my lil bro's switch. gives us more options and all that
I’m getting the Animal Crossing Switch, so I’ll be waiting to get my code on the 20th. But my Nintendo-crazed mother (who bought a Switch at 55 to play Luigi’s Mansion, Layton and Animal Crossing) has just asked me to show her exactly how the eShop works so she can preload it tonight and start playing right away on release day. And yes, she took the day off work to play (as did I, as any 25-year-old Nintendo fam worth their salt would do). She’s that cool.
@CairiB I’ve preordered with them before (a few games and two joy-con sets, and now the Animal Crossing-themed Switch), and always received the item on release day. The only exception was when Happy Home Designer came out - there was an issue with Royal Mail which meant it would be delivered two days after release. I got an email from Nintendo to inform me of this, alongside with their apology and a free digital code for the game so I could start playing right away; that was customer service at its best. I’d say go for it, they’re super reliable.
@Jooles_95 fantastic, thanks for taking the time to give me some info, I search their site and couldn’t find anything about the preorder process (I have mentioned it in their survey) preordered it now, can’t wait 🙌🏻
@CairiB Nice! I’m counting down the days - I can’t believe it’ll finally be out in less than six weeks!
@Jooles_95 me too, first adventures in Animal Crossing so I can’t wait ☺️
Oh wow, I hope you enjoy it! It’s one of my favourite series, and literally the most relaxing, enjoyable game I’ve ever played.
